And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a
trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:
Among those nations you will find no
repose, not even a resting
place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you a
trembling heart, failing eyes, and a
despairing soul.
And when ye came unto this
place, Sihon the king of
Heshbon, and
Og the king of
Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we
smote them:
When you reached this
place, Sihon king of
Heshbon and
Og king of
Bashan came out against us in battle, but we defeated them.
When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose, thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing.
when all Israel comes before the LORD your God at the place He will choose, you are to read this law in the hearing of all Israel.
Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
He made him
ride on the high
places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to
suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the
flinty rock;
He made him
ride on the heights of the land and fed him the produce of the field. He
nourished him with honey from the rock and oil from the
flinty crag,
The eternal God is thy refuge, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
The eternal God is your dwelling
place, and
underneath are the
everlasting arms. He drives out the enemy before you, giving the command, ‘Destroy him!’
Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy
excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt
tread upon their high
places.
Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD? He is the shield that protects you, the sword in which you
boast. Your enemies will cower before you, and you shall
trample their high
places.”
Every
place that the sole of your foot shall
tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.
I have given you every
place where the sole of your foot will
tread, just as I promised to Moses.
And they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.
and commanded the people: “When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the
Levitical priests, you are to set out from your positions and follow it.
And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the
place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the
lodging place, where ye shall
lodge this night.
and command them: ‘Take up for
yourselves twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan where the priests were standing, carry them with you, and set them down in the
place where you
spend the night.’”
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the
place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant stood. And the stones are there to this day.
And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.
When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the Jordan and their feet touched the dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their course and overflowed all the banks as before.
And Joshua raised up their sons in their
place, and these were the ones he
circumcised. Until this time they were still
uncircumcised, since they had not been
circumcised along the way.
And it came to pass, when they had done
circumcising all the people, that they abode in their
places in the camp, till they were whole.
And after all the nation had been
circumcised, they stayed there in the camp until they were
healed.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the
place is called
Gilgal unto this day.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “
Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So that
place has been called
Gilgal to this day.
And the captain of the LORD’S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy
shoe from off thy foot; for the
place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
The Commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your
sandals, for the
place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
And they raised over him a great
heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that
place was called, The valley of
Achor, unto this day.
And they
heaped over
Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that
place is called the Valley of
Achor to this day.
Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in
ambush, and abode between
Bethel and
Ai, on the west side of
Ai: but Joshua
lodged that night among the people.
So Joshua sent them out, and they went to the
place of
ambush and lay in wait between
Bethel and
Ai, to the west of
Ai. But Joshua spent that night among the people.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed
place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up against him behind the city.
And the
ambush arose quickly out of their
place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
and as soon as he did so, the men in
ambush rose quickly from their position. They
rushed forward, entered the city, captured it, and immediately set it on fire.
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been
hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.
At
sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were
placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
And when he that
doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a
place, that he may dwell among them.
When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.
And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.
So they called that place Bochim and offered sacrifices there to the LORD.
Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out
hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
That is why the LORD had left those nations in place and had not driven them out immediately by delivering them into the hand of Joshua.
They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the
places of drawing water, there shall they
rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.
the voices of the singers at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates:
Zebulun was a people who risked their lives;
Naphtali, too, on the heights of the battlefield.
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will
tarry until thou come again.
Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set it before You.” And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”
And
Gideon went in, and made ready a
kid, and
unleavened cakes of an
ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a
basket, and he put the
broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.
So
Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and
unleavened bread and an
ephah of flour. He
placed the meat in a
basket and the
broth in a pot and brought them out to present to Him under the oak.
And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered
place, and take the second
bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the
grove which thou shalt cut down.
Then build a proper altar to the LORD your God on the top of this
stronghold. And with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down, take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”
Behold, I will put a
fleece of wool in the floor; and if the
dew be on the
fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou
wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
then behold, I will
place a
fleece of wool on the
threshing floor. If there is
dew only on the
fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said.”
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his
place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “With the three hundred men who
lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”
And they stood every man in his
place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and
cried, and fled.
Each
Israelite took his position around the camp, and the entire Midianite army fled, crying out as they ran.
And
Gideon made an
ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a
whoring after it: which thing became a
snare unto
Gideon, and to his house.
From all this
Gideon made an
ephod, which he
placed in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon all Israel
prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a
snare to
Gideon and his household.
And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and
Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as
Abimelech and his men came out from their hiding
places.
And when the men of Israel saw that
Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his
place.
And when the Israelites saw that
Abimelech was dead, they all went home.
And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, the king of
Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my
place.
And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the
Amorites, who ruled in
Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land into our own
place.’
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the
jawbone out of his hand, and called that
place Ramath-lehi.
And when
Samson had finished speaking, he cast the
jawbone from his hand; and he named that
place Ramath-lehi.
But God
clave an hollow
place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow
place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
And it was told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is come
hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
When the Gazites heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that
place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will kill him.”
Yet he restored the money unto his mother; and his mother took two hundred shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a
graven image and a
molten image: and they were in the house of
Micah.
So he returned the silver to his mother, and she took two hundred shekels of silver and gave them to a
silversmith, who made them into a
graven image and a
molten idol. And they were
placed in the house of
Micah.
And the man departed out of the city from Bethlehemjudah to
sojourn where he could find a
place: and he came to mount Ephraim to the house of
Micah, as he journeyed.
This man left the city of
Bethlehem in Judah to settle where he could find a
place. And as he traveled, he came to
Micah’s house in the hill country of Ephraim.
And
Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a
Levite of Bethlehemjudah, and I go to
sojourn where I may find a
place.
“Where are you from?”
Micah asked him. “I am a
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah,” he replied, “and I am on my way to settle wherever I can find a
place.”
When they were by the house of
Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the
Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee
hither? and what makest thou in this
place? and what hast thou here?
And while they were near
Micah’s house, they recognized the voice of the young
Levite; so they went over and asked him, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this
place? Why are you here?”
When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
When you enter, you will come to an
unsuspecting people and a
spacious land, for God has delivered it into your hand. It is a
place where nothing on earth is lacking.”
And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that
place Mahaneh-
dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.
They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why the
place west of Kiriath-jearim is called Mahaneh-
dan to this day.
And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these
places to
lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in
Ramah.
He continued, “Come, let us try to reach one of these towns to
spend the night in Gibeah or
Ramah.”
And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he
sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the
place were Benjamites.
That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was residing in Gibeah (the men of that place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the field.
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an
ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his
place.
“Get up,” he told her. “Let us go.” But there was no
response. So the man put her on his
donkey and set out for home.
And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in
array in the
place where they put themselves in
array the first day.
But the
Israelite army took courage and again took their battle positions in the same
place where they had
arrayed themselves on the first day.
And all the men of Israel rose up out of their
place, and put themselves in
array at
Baal-tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their
places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
So all the men of Israel got up from their
places and
arrayed themselves at
Baal-tamar, and the Israelites in
ambush charged from their positions west of Gibeah.
So the children of Benjamin saw that they were
smitten: for the men of Israel gave
place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.
Then the Benjamites realized they had been defeated. Now the men of Israel had retreated before Benjamin because they were relying on the
ambush they had set against Gibeah.
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a
place which is on the north side of
Bethel, on the east side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
“But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
Accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road leading back to the land of Judah.
Then said Boaz unto
Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to
glean in another field, neither go from hence, but
abide here fast by my maidens:
Then Boaz said to
Ruth, “
Listen, my daughter. Do not go and
glean in another field, and do not go away from this
place, but stay here close to my servant girls.
Then
Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?
One day
Ruth’s mother-in-law
Naomi said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek a resting
place for you, that it may be well with you?
And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.
When he lies down, note the place where he lies. Then go in and uncover his feet, and lie down, and he will explain to you what you should do.”
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his
place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
And
Naomi took the child, and laid it in her
bosom, and became
nurse unto it.
And
Naomi took the child,
placed him on her
lap, and became a
nurse to him.
And
Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the
loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.
And
Eli would
bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman in
place of the one she dedicated to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
Wherefore
kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my
habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make
yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Why then do you
kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling
place? You have honored your sons more than Me by
fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
And thou shalt see an enemy in my
habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.
You will see distress in My dwelling
place.
Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age.
And it came to pass at that time, when
Eli was laid down in his
place, and his eyes began to wax
dim, that he could not see;
And at that time
Eli, whose
eyesight had grown so
dim that he could not see, was lying in his room.
Therefore
Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his
place.
“Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for Your servant is
listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his
place.
And when they of
Ashdod arose early on the
morrow, behold,
Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took
Dagon, and set him in his
place again.
When the people of
Ashdod got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD. So they took
Dagon and returned him to his
place.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own
place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its
place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of God was heavy upon it.
And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us
wherewith we shall send it to his
place.
the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how to send it back to its place.”
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the
coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the chest containing the gold objects, and they placed them on the large rock. That day the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the LORD.
And the golden
mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of
fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of
Abel,
whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-
shemite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of
Philistine cities belonging to the five rulers—the fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock on which they
placed the ark of the LORD stands to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.
And he went from year to year in circuit to
Bethel, and
Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those
places.
Every year he would go on a circuit from
Bethel to
Gilgal to
Mizpah, judging Israel in all these
places.
And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make
haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high
place:
“
Yes, he is
ahead of you,” they answered. “
Hurry now, for
today he has come to the city because the people have a sacrifice on the high
place.
As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the high
place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he
doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high
place to eat. The people will not eat until he comes, because he must
bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
So Saul and his servant went up toward the city, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the
seer: go up before me unto the high
place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to
morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
“I am the
seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up before me to the high
place, for you shall eat with me
today. And when I send you off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your heart.
And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest
place among them that were
bidden, which were about thirty persons.
Then Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them into the hall, and seated them in the place of honor among those who were invited—about thirty in all.
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
And after they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof of his house.
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high
place with a
psaltery, and a
tabret, and a pipe, and a
harp, before them; and they shall
prophesy:
After that you will come to Gibeah of God, where the Philistines have an outpost. As you approach the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high
place, preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be
prophesying.
And one of the same
place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a
proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then a man who lived there replied, “And who is their father?” So the saying became a
proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And when he had made an end of
prophesying, he came to the high
place.
And when Saul had finished
prophesying, he went up to the high
place.
When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers
cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this
place.
When Jacob went to Egypt, your fathers
cried out to the LORD, and He sent them Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt and settled them in this
place.
Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.
Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you requested. Behold, the LORD has placed a king over you.
When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.
Seeing that they were in danger because their troops were hard-pressed, the men of Israel
hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in cellars and cisterns.
If they say thus unto us,
Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our
place, and will not go up unto them.
If they say, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stay where we are and will not go up to them.
And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had
adjured the people, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be
avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.
Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, for Saul had
placed the troops under an oath, saying, “
Cursed is the man who eats any food before evening, before I have taken
vengeance on my enemies.” So none of the troops tasted any food.
And Saul said,
Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me
hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and
slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and
slew them there.
Then he said, “Go among the troops and tell them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep, slaughter them in this
place, and then eat. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.’” So that night
everyone brought his ox and slaughtered it there.
Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
Then Saul gave up his pursuit of the Philistines, and the Philistines returned to their own land.
And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to
Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a
place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to
Gilgal.
Early in the morning Samuel got up to
confront Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to
Carmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself and has turned and gone down to
Gilgal.”
But
Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and
Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take
heed to
thyself until the morning, and
abide in a secret
place, and hide
thyself:
so he
warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret
place and hide there.
And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a
pillow of goats hair for his
bolster, and covered it with a cloth.
Then Michal took a household
idol and laid it in the bed,
placed some goat hair on its head, and covered it with a garment.
And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the
place where thou
didst hide
thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
When you have stayed three days,
hurry down to the
place you
hid on the day this trouble began, and remain beside the stone Ezel.
And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and
Jonathan arose, and
Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s
place was empty.
He sat in his usual
place by the wall, opposite
Jonathan and beside
Abner, but David’s
place was empty.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David’s
place was empty: and Saul said unto
Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of
Jesse to meat, neither
yesterday, nor to day?
But on the day after the New Moon, the second day, David’s
place was still empty, and Saul asked his son
Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of
Jesse come to the meal either
yesterday or
today?”
And as soon as the
lad was gone, David arose out of a
place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they
kissed one another, and
wept one with another, until David exceeded.
When the young man had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone, fell facedown, and bowed three times. Then he and
Jonathan kissed each other and
wept together—though David
wept more.
And David said unto
Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a
place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
Then David and his men, which were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went
whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; and he
forbare to go forth.
Then David and his men, about six hundred strong, set out and departed from Keilah, moving from place to place. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he declined to go forth.
Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his
place where his
haunt is, and who hath seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very
subtilly.
Please go and prepare further.
Investigate and watch carefully where he goes and who has seen him there, for I am told that he is extremely
cunning.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
So Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why that place is called Sela-hammahlekoth.
