lodge in.

spend the night.”

Hereby ye shall be
proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come
hither.
And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
Send one of you, and let him
fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be
proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are
spies.
Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words may be tested. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are
spies!”

ordinance, and there he
proved them,

sweetened. There the LORD made for them a statute and an
ordinance, and there He tested them,

sinning.”
Wherefore they that speak in
proverbs say, Come into
Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:
That is why the poets say: “Come to
Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let the city of Sihon be restored.

manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might
prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

prosper.

hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God
proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
you must not
listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
And the judges shall make
diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath
testified falsely against his brother;
The judges shall
investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is
proven to be a
liar who has falsely accused his brother,

horror,
scorn, and
ridicule among all the nations to which the LORD will drive you.
And of Levi he said, Let thy
Thummim and thy
Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou
didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou
didst strive at the waters of Meribah;

Urim to Your godly one, whom You tested at Massah and contested at the waters of Meribah.

Canaan,
And they were to
prove Israel by them, to know whether they would
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.
And
Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me
prove, I pray thee, but this once with the
fleece; let it now be dry only upon the
fleece, and upon all the ground let there be
dew.
Then
Gideon said to God, “Do not be
angry with me; let me speak one more time. Please allow me one more test with the
fleece. This time let it be dry, and the ground covered with
dew.”

provender for our
asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy
handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.

donkeys, and bread and wine for me and the
maidservant and young man with me. There is nothing that we, your servants, lack.”

girded his sword upon his armour, and he
assayed to go; for he had not
proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not
proved them. And David put them off him.

tunic and tried to walk, but he was not accustomed to them. “I cannot walk in these,” David said to Saul. “I am not accustomed to them.” So David took them off.
As saith the
proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

proverb says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand will never be against you.
I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and
shew thyself a man;

prove yourself a man.
And he spake three thousand
proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
Solomon composed three thousand
proverbs, and his songs numbered a thousand and five.
Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have
hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a
proverb and a
byword among all people:
then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and I will
banish from My presence this temple I have
sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of
scorn and
ridicule among all peoples.
And when the queen of
Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to
prove him with hard questions.
Now when the queen of
Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with difficult questions.
But the people that followed Omri prevailed against the people that followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned.
But the followers of Omri proved stronger than those of Tibni son of Ginath. So Tibni died and Omri became king.
Then will I
pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have
sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a
proverb and a
byword among all nations.
then I will
uproot Israel from the soil I have given them, and I will
banish from My presence this temple I have
sanctified for My Name. I will make it an object of
scorn and
ridicule among all the peoples.
And when the queen of
Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to
prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when she was come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
Now when the queen of
Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon, she came to test him with difficult questions. She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large
caravan—with camels bearing spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. So she came to Solomon and spoke with him about all that was on her mind.
And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsa,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer: but they could not
shew their father’s house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:
The following came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer, but could not
prove that their families were descended from Israel:
And these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha,
Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not
shew their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.
The following came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha,
Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but could not
prove that their families were descended from Israel:
How forcible are right words! but what
doth your
arguing reprove?
How painful are
honest words! But what does your argument
prove?
If I
justify myself, mine own mouth shall
condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also
prove me
perverse.
Even if I were righteous, my mouth would
condemn me; if I were
blameless, it would declare me guilty.
Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.
Your maxims are
proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay.
And if it be not so now, who will make me a
liar, and make my speech nothing worth?
If this is not so, then who can
prove me a
liar and reduce my words to nothing?”
Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that
convinced Job, or that answered his words:
I paid you full attention. But no one
proved Job wrong; not one of you
rebutted his arguments.
Thou hast
proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not
transgress.
You have tried my heart; You have visited me in the night. You have tested me and found no evil; I have resolved not to sin with my mouth.
Examine me, O LORD, and
prove me; try my
reins and my heart.
Test me, O LORD, and try me; examine my heart and mind.
I will
incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the
harp.
Against thee, thee only, have I
sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
Against You, You only, have I
sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be
proved right when You speak and
blameless when You judge.
For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.
For You, O God, have tested us; You have refined us like silver.
Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of
thunder: I
proved thee at the waters of Meribah.
Selah.
You called out in distress, and I
rescued you; I answered you from the cloud of
thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Selah When your fathers
tempted me,
proved me, and saw my work.
where your fathers tested and tried Me, though they had seen My work.
Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him.
until his
prediction came true and the word of the LORD
proved him right.
The
proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
These are the
proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel,
To understand a
proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
by understanding the
proverbs and parables, the sayings and
riddles of the wise.
The
proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a
foolish son grief to his mother.
These are also
proverbs of Solomon, which the men of
Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
These are additional
proverbs of Solomon, which were copied by the men of
Hezekiah king of Judah:
The legs of the
lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
As a
thorn goeth up into the hand of a
drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a
liar.
Do not add to His words, lest He
rebuke you and
prove you a
liar.
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will
prove thee with
mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good!” But it
proved to be
futile.
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
All this I tested by wisdom, saying, “I
resolve to be wise.” But it was beyond me.
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
That thou shalt take up this
proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the
oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
you will sing this song of contempt against the king of Babylon: How the
oppressor has ceased, and how his
fury has ended!
And I will deliver them to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth for their
hurt, to be a reproach and a
proverb, a
taunt and a
curse, in all places
whither I shall drive them.
Son of man, what is that
proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth?
“Son of man, what is this
proverb that you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by, and every vision fails’?
Tell them therefore, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will make this
proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a
proverb in Israel; but say unto them, The days are at hand, and the effect of every vision.
Therefore tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will put an end to this
proverb, and in Israel they will no longer
recite it.’ But say to them: ‘The days are at hand when every vision will be fulfilled.
And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a
proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a
proverb; I will cut him off from among My people. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
Behold, every one that useth
proverbs shall use this
proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter.
What mean ye, that ye use this
proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten
sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?
“What do you people mean by
quoting this
proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten
sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this
proverb in Israel.
As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no longer
quote this
proverb in Israel.
Prove thy servants, I
beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us
pulse to eat, and water to drink.
“Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given only vegetables to eat and water to drink.
So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
So he consented to this and tested them for ten days.
Therefore shalt thou give presents to Moresheth-
gath: the houses of
Achzib shall be a lie to the kings of Israel.
In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and
lament with a
doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly
spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields.
In that day they will take up a
proverb against you and
taunt you with this bitter
lamentation: ‘We are utterly ruined! He has changed the portion of my people. How He has removed it from me! He has
allotted our fields to traitors.’”
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a
taunting proverb against him, and say,
Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
Will not all of these take up a
taunt against him, speaking with
mockery and
derision: ‘
Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’
Bring ye all the
tithes into the
storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and
prove me now
herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
Bring the full
tithe into the
storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure.
And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to
prove them: I pray thee have me
excused.
Another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. Please
excuse me.’
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?”
And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.
Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
These things have I spoken unto you in
proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in
proverbs, but I shall
shew you plainly of the Father.
I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no
proverb.
His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and without figures of speech.
Nor can they prove to you any of their charges against me.
And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and
grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not
prove.
When Paul arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many serious charges that they could not prove.
God
forbid:
yea, let God be true, but every man a
liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a
liar. As it is written: “So that You may be
proved right when You speak and victorious when You judge.”
What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
And be not
conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may
prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and
approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
his
workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will
prove the quality of each man’s work.
For behold this
selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you,
yea, what clearing of
yourselves,
yea, what
indignation,
yea, what fear,
yea, what
vehement desire,
yea, what zeal,
yea, what
revenge! In all things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear
yourselves, what
indignation, what
alarm, what longing, what zeal, what
vindication! In every way you have
proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
For if I have
boasted any thing to him of you, I am not
ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our
boasting, which I made before
Titus, is found a truth.
Indeed, I was not
embarrassed by anything I had
boasted to him about you. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our
boasting to
Titus has
proved to be true as well.
I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to
prove the
sincerity of your love.
I am not making a demand, but I am testing the
sincerity of your love in comparison to the earnestness of others.
And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have
oftentimes proved diligent in many things, but now much more
diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.
And we are sending along with them our brother whose earnestness has been
proven many times and in many ways, and now even more so by his great confidence in you.
Yet have I sent the brethren, lest our
boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf; that, as I said, ye may be ready:
But I am sending the brothers in order that our
boasting about you in this matter should not
prove empty, but that you will be prepared, just as I said.
Examine
yourselves, whether ye be in the faith;
prove your own
selves. Know ye not your own
selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Examine
yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test
yourselves. Can’t you see for
yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?
For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a
transgressor.
If I rebuild what I have already
torn down, I
prove myself to be a
lawbreaker.
But let every man
prove his own work, and then shall he have
rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
Each one should test his own work. Then he will have reason to
boast in himself alone, and not in someone else.
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Test and prove what pleases the Lord.
That ye may
approve things that are excellent; that ye may be
sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;
so that you may be able to test and
prove what is best and may be pure and
blameless for the day of Christ,
But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.
But you know
Timothy’s
proven worth, that as a child with his father he has served with me to advance the gospel.
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
but test all things. Hold fast to what is good.
And let these also first be
proved; then let them use the office of a
deacon, being found
blameless.
Additionally, they must first be tested. Then, if they are above reproach, let them serve as deacons.
