But those
riches perish by evil
travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.
or wealth lost in a failed
venture, so when that man has a son there is nothing to pass on.
Every man also to whom God hath given
riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to
rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.
Furthermore, God has given
riches and wealth to every man, and He has enabled him to enjoy them, to accept his lot, and to
rejoice in his labor. This is a gift from God.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
God gives a man
riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart desires; but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is
futile and a
grievous affliction.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful. For time and chance happen to all.
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
Folly is appointed to great heights, but the rich sit in lowly positions.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and
curse not the
rich in thy
bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
Do not
curse the king even in your thoughts, or
curse the
rich even in your
bedroom, for a bird of the air may carry your words, and a winged creature may report your speech.
For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the
riches of Damascus and the
spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
For before the boy knows how to cry ‘Father’ or ‘Mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the
plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”
And my hand hath found as a nest the
riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or
peeped.
My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth. No wing
fluttered, no
beak opened or
chirped.’”
The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and
anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the
viper and
fiery flying serpent, they will carry their
riches upon the shoulders of young
asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.
This is the burden against the beasts of the Negev: Through a land of
hardship and distress, of
lioness and lion, of
viper and flying serpent, they carry their wealth on the backs of
donkeys and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people of no profit to them.
Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt
sow the ground
withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and
plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
Then He will send rain for the seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food that comes from your land will be
rich and
plentiful. On that day your cattle will
graze in open pastures.
And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.
I will give you the treasures of darkness and the riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by name.
And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the
rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any
deceit in his mouth.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with a
rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, nor was any
deceit in His mouth.
Wherefore do ye
spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
Why
spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the
richest of foods.
Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
Then you will look and be
radiant, and your heart will
tremble and swell with joy, because the
riches of the sea will be brought to you, and the wealth of the nations will come to you.
But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the
riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye
boast yourselves.
But you will be called the priests of the LORD; they will speak of you as ministers of our God; you will feed on the wealth of nations, and you will
boast in their
riches.
As a
cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of
deceit: therefore they are become great, and
waxen rich.
Like cages full of birds, so their houses are full of
deceit. Therefore they have become powerful and
rich.
Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man
boast in his wisdom, nor the strong man in his strength, nor the wealthy man in his
riches.
As the
partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth
riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a
fool.
Like a
partridge hatching eggs it did not lay is the man who makes a fortune unjustly. In the middle of his days his
riches will desert him, and in the end he will be the
fool.”
Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-heres: because the
riches that he hath
gotten are perished.
Therefore My heart laments like a
flute for Moab; it laments like a
flute for the men of Kir-heres, because the wealth they acquired has perished.
Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O
backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?
Why do you
boast of your valleys— your valleys so fruitful, O faithless daughter? You trust in your
riches and say, ‘Who can come against me?’
O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy
covetousness.
You who dwell by many waters, rich in treasures, your end has come; the thread of your life is cut.
And they shall make a
spoil of thy
riches, and make a prey of thy
merchandise: and they shall break down thy walls, and destroy thy pleasant houses: and they shall lay thy stones and thy timber and thy dust in the midst of the water.
Tarshish was thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all kind of
riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs.
Tarshish was your merchant because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your wares.
Damascus was thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the wine of Helbon, and white wool.
Because of your many products and your great wealth of goods, Damascus traded with you wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar,
These were thy merchants in all sorts of things, in blue clothes, and
broidered work, and in chests of
rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of
cedar, among thy
merchandise.
In your marketplace they traded with you fine garments of blue,
embroidered work, and multicolored rugs with cords
tightly twisted and
knotted.
Thy
riches, and thy fairs, thy
merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the occupiers of thy
merchandise, and all thy men of war, that are in thee, and in all thy company which is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin.
Your wealth, wares, and
merchandise, your sailors, captains, and shipwrights, your merchants and all the warriors within you, with all the other people on board, will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your
downfall.
When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou filledst many people; thou
didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy
riches and of thy
merchandise.
When your wares went out to sea, you satisfied many nations. You enriched the kings of the earth with your abundant wealth and
merchandise.
With thy wisdom and with thine understanding thou hast
gotten thee
riches, and hast
gotten gold and silver into thy treasures:
By your wisdom and understanding you have gained your wealth and
amassed gold and silver for your
treasuries.
By thy great wisdom and by thy
traffick hast thou increased thy
riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy
riches:
By your great skill in trading you have increased your wealth, but your heart has grown proud because of it.
I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel.
I will feed them in good pasture, and the lofty mountains of Israel will be their
grazing land. There they will lie down in a good
grazing land; they will feed in
rich pasture on the mountains of Israel.
I
ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I
anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.
I
ate no
rich food, no meat or wine entered my mouth, and I did not
anoint myself with oil until the three weeks were completed.
And now will I
shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far
richer than they all: and by his strength through his
riches he shall
stir up all against the realm of
Grecia.
Now then, I will tell you the truth: Three more kings will arise in Persia, and then a fourth, who will be far
richer than all the others. By the power of his wealth, he will
stir up
everyone against the kingdom of Greece.
For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.
For the king of the North will raise another army, larger than the first, and after some years he will advance with a great army and many supplies.
He shall enter
peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall
scatter among them the prey, and
spoil, and
riches:
yea, and he shall
forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.
In a time of peace, he will
invade the
richest provinces and do what his fathers and forefathers never did. He will
lavish plunder,
loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will plot against the strongholds—but only for a time.
Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.
The king of the North will return to his land with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant; so he will do damage and return to his own land.
But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
And in their place, he will honor a god of fortresses—a god his fathers did not know—with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches.
But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and over all the riches of Egypt, and the Libyans and Cushites will also submit to him.
And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
And Ephraim boasts: “How rich I have become! I have found wealth for myself. In all my labors, they can find in me no iniquity that is sinful.”
For the
rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is
deceitful in their mouth.
For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; their tongues are
deceitful in their mouths.
Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their
drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat
plenteous.
Therefore he sacrifices to his
dragnet and burns incense to his fishing net, for by these things his portion is
sumptuous and his food is
rich.
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a
taunting proverb against him, and say,
Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
Will not all of these take up a
taunt against him, speaking with
mockery and
derision: ‘
Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself
rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’
Whose possessors
slay them, and hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am
rich: and their own
shepherds pity them not.
whose buyers slaughter them without
remorse. Those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the LORD, for I am
rich!’ Even their own
shepherds have no
compassion on them.
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the
deceitfulness of
riches,
choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
The seed sown among the thorns is the one who hears the word, but the
worries of this life and the
deceitfulness of wealth
choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
Then said Jesus unto his disciples,
Verily I say unto you, That a
rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a
camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a
rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Again I tell you, it is easier for a
camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a
rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:
When it was evening, there came a
rich man from
Arimathea named Joseph, who himself was a disciple of Jesus.
And the cares of this world, and the
deceitfulness of
riches, and the lusts of other things entering in,
choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
but the
worries of this life, the
deceitfulness of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and
choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
And the disciples were
astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in
riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
And the disciples were
amazed at His words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
It is easier for a
camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a
rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
It is easier for a
camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a
rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and
beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were
rich cast in much.
As Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury, He watched the crowd putting money into it. And many rich people put in large amounts.
He hath filled the
hungry with good things; and the
rich he hath sent empty away.
He has filled the
hungry with good things, but has sent the
rich away empty.
But
woe unto you that are
rich! for ye have received your
consolation.
But
woe to you who are
rich, for you have already received your comfort.
And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are
choked with cares and
riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
The seeds that fell among the thorns are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are
choked by the
worries,
riches, and pleasures of this life, and their fruit does not
mature.
And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain
rich man brought forth
plentifully:
Then He told them a parable: “The ground of a certain rich man produced an abundance.
So is he that layeth up
treasure for himself, and is not
rich toward God.
This is how it will be for
anyone who stores up
treasure for himself but is not
rich toward God.”
Then said he also to him that
bade him, When thou makest a
dinner or a
supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy
kinsmen, nor thy
rich neighbours; lest they also
bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
Then Jesus said to the man who had invited Him, “When you host a
dinner or a
banquet, do not
invite your friends or brothers or relatives or
rich neighbors. Otherwise, they may
invite you in return, and you will be repaid.
And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain
rich man, which had a
steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.
Jesus also said to His disciples, “There was a
rich man whose
manager was accused of wasting his possessions.
If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous
mammon, who will commit to your trust the true
riches?
So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will
entrust you with true
riches?
There was a certain
rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared
sumptuously every day:
Now there was a
rich man dressed in purple and fine linen, who lived each day in
joyous splendor.
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the
rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and
licked his sores.
and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the
rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and
licked his sores.
And it came to pass, that the
beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s
bosom: the
rich man also died, and was buried;
One day the
beggar died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. And the
rich man also died and was buried.
And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
But when the ruler heard this, he became very
sad, because he was extremely wealthy.
And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Seeing the man’s
sadness, Jesus said, “How hard it is for the
rich to enter the kingdom of God!
For it is easier for a
camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a
rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Indeed, it is easier for a
camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a
rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.
And there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax
collector, who was very wealthy.
And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
Then Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury,
And that he might make known the
riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had
afore prepared unto glory,
What if He did this to make the riches of His glory known to the vessels of His mercy, whom He prepared in advance for glory—
For there is no difference between the
Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is
rich unto all that call upon him.
For there is no difference between
Jew and Greek: The same Lord is Lord of all, and gives
richly to all who call on Him,
Now if the fall of them be the
riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the
riches of the Gentiles; how much more their
fulness?
But if their
trespass means
riches for the world, and their failure means
riches for the Gentiles, how much greater
riches will their fullness bring!
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways!
Now ye are full, now ye are rich, ye have reigned as kings without us: and I would to God ye did reign, that we also might reign with you.
Already you have all you want. Already you have become rich. Without us, you have become kings. How I wish you really were kings, so that we might be kings with you!
As sorrowful, yet
alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many
rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.
sorrowful, yet always
rejoicing; poor, yet making many
rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
How that in a great trial of
affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the
riches of their
liberality.
In the terrible
ordeal they suffered, their abundant joy and deep poverty overflowed into
rich generosity.
For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich.
In whom we have
redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the
riches of his grace;
In Him we have
redemption through His blood, the
forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the
riches of His grace
The eyes of your understanding being
enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the
riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
I ask that the eyes of your heart may be
enlightened, so that you may know the hope of His calling, the
riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints,
But God, who is
rich in mercy, for his great love
wherewith he loved us,
But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
That in the ages to come he might
shew the exceeding
riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
in order that in the coming ages He might display the
surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should
preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable
riches of Christ;
Though I am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given me: to
preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable
riches of Christ,
That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
I ask that out of the
riches of His glory He may
strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
To whom God would make known what is the
riches of the glory of this
mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious
riches of this
mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
That their hearts might be comforted, being
knit together in love, and unto all
riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the
mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
that they may be encouraged in heart,
knit together in love, and filled with the full
riches of complete understanding, so that they may know the
mystery of God, namely Christ,
Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly in all wisdom; teaching and
admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Let the word of Christ
richly dwell within you as you teach and
admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with
gratitude in your hearts to God.
Those who want to be
rich, however, fall into
temptation and become ensnared by many
foolish and
harmful desires that
plunge them into ruin and destruction.
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Instruct those who are
rich in the present age not to be
conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who
richly provides all things for us to enjoy.
That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
Instruct them to do good, to be
rich in good works, and to be generous and ready to share,
Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
He valued disgrace for Christ above the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking
ahead to his reward.
But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
But the one who is
rich should
exult in his low position, because he will pass away like a flower of the field.
For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the
rich man
fade away in his ways.
For the sun rises with
scorching heat and
withers the plant; its flower falls and its beauty is lost. So too, the
rich man will
fade away in the midst of his pursuits.
Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world
rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?
Listen, my beloved brothers: Has not God chosen the poor of this world to be
rich in faith and to
inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him?
But ye have
despised the poor. Do not
rich men
oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?
But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the
rich who
oppress you and
drag you into court?
Go to now, ye
rich men,
weep and
howl for your
miseries that shall come upon you.
Come now, you who are
rich,
weep and
wail over the misery to come upon you.
Your
riches are corrupted, and your garments are
motheaten.
Your
riches have
rotted and
moths have eaten your clothes.
I know thy works, and
tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art
rich) and I know the
blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the
synagogue of
Satan.
I know your
affliction and your poverty—though you are
rich! And I am aware of the
slander of those who falsely claim to be Jews, but are in fact a
synagogue of
Satan.
Because thou sayest, I am
rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art
wretched, and
miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
You say, ‘I am
rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not
realize that you are
wretched,
pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
I counsel thee to
buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be
rich; and white
raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and
anoint thine eyes with
eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
I counsel you to
buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become
rich, white garments so that you may be clothed and your shameful nakedness not exposed, and
salve to
anoint your eyes so that you may see.
Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.
In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
