So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them,
saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but horses
tied, and
asses tied, and the tents as they were.
So they went and called out to the gatekeepers of the city,
saying, “We went to the
Aramean camp and no one was there—not a trace—only
tethered horses and
donkeys, and the tents were
intact.”
And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now
shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be
hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field,
saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.
So the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are
starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will take them alive and enter the city.’”
They took therefore two
chariot horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians,
saying, Go and see.
Then the scouts took two
chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the
Aramean army,
saying, “Go and see.”
And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king,
saying, Two measures of barley for a
shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a
shekel, shall be to
morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria:
It happened just as the man of God had told the king: “About this time
tomorrow at the gate of Samaria, two seahs of barley will sell for a
shekel, and a
seah of fine flour will sell for a
shekel.”
Then spake
Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life,
saying, Arise, and go thou and thine household, and
sojourn wheresoever thou canst
sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years.
Now
Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, you and your household; go and live as a foreigner wherever you can. For the LORD has decreed a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
And the woman arose, and did after the
saying of the man of God: and she went with her household, and
sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.
So the woman had proceeded to do as the man of God had
instructed. And she and her household lived as foreigners for seven years in the land of the Philistines.
And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God,
saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things that
Elisha hath done.
Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God,
saying, “Please relate to me all the great things
Elisha has done.”
And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed unto her a certain officer, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field since the day that she left the land, even until now.
When the king asked the woman, she confirmed it. So the king appointed for her an officer, saying, “Restore all that was hers, along with all the proceeds of the field from the day that she left the country until now.”
And
Elisha came to Damascus; and Ben-
hadad the king of Syria was sick; and it was told him,
saying, The man of God is come
hither.
Then
Elisha came to Damascus while Ben-
hadad king of
Aram was sick, and the king was told, “The man of God has come here.”
And the king said unto
Hazael, Take a present in thine hand, and go, meet the man of God, and
enquire of the LORD by him,
saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So the king said to
Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand, go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the LORD through him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
So
Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Ben-
hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee,
saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So
Hazael went to meet
Elisha, taking with him a gift of forty
camel loads of every good thing from Damascus. And he went in and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-
hadad king of
Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me,
saying, Thus saith the LORD, I have
anointed thee king over Israel.
“That is a lie!” they said. “Tell us now!” So
Jehu answered, “He talked to me about this and that, and he said, ‘This is what the LORD says: I
anoint you king over Israel.’”
Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and
blew with
trumpets,
saying,
Jehu is king.
Quickly, each man took his garment and put it under
Jehu on the bare steps. Then they
blew the ram’s horn and proclaimed, “
Jehu is king!”
So there went one on
horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And
Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the
watchman told,
saying, The
messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.
So a
horseman rode off to meet
Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?”
Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the
watchman reported, “The
messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”
And the
watchman told,
saying, He came even unto them, and cometh not again: and the driving is like the driving of
Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he driveth
furiously.
Again the
watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the
charioteer is driving like
Jehu son of Nimshi—he is driving like a
madman!”
Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Elijah the Tishbite,
saying, In the portion of
Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of
Jezebel:
So they went back and told
Jehu, who replied, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke through His servant
Elijah the Tishbite: ‘On the plot of ground at
Jezreel the dogs will
devour the flesh of
Jezebel.
And
Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And
Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up
Ahab’s children,
saying,
Now
Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So
Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the officials of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to the guardians of the sons of
Ahab,
saying:
And he that was over the house, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and the bringers up of the children, sent to
Jehu,
saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt
bid us; we will not make any king: do thou that which is good in thine eyes.
So the palace
administrator, the
overseer of the city, the elders, and the guardians sent a message to
Jehu: “We are your servants, and we will do whatever you say. We will not make
anyone king. Do whatever is good in your sight.”
Then he wrote a letter the second time to them,
saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will
hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to
Jezreel by to
morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
Then
Jehu wrote them a second letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s sons to me at
Jezreel by this time
tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
And there came a
messenger, and told him,
saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning.
When the
messenger arrived, he told
Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the sons of the king.” And
Jehu ordered, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”
And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for the LORD. So they made him
ride in his
chariot.
saying, “Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD!” So he had him
ride in his
chariot.
And when he came to Samaria, he
slew all that remained unto
Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the
saying of the LORD, which he spake to
Elijah.
When
Jehu came to Samaria, he struck down
everyone belonging to
Ahab who remained there, until he had destroyed them, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to
Elijah.
And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house;
and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath shall guard the royal palace,
Now
Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness
whereof he died. And
Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and
wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the
chariot of Israel, and the
horsemen thereof.
When
Elisha had fallen sick with the illness from which he would die, Jehoash king of Israel came down to him and
wept over him,
saying, “My father, my father, the
chariots and
horsemen of Israel!”
But the children of the murderers he
slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded,
saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
Yet he did not put the sons of the murderers to death, but acted according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of
Jehoahaz son of
Jehu, king of Israel,
saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash son of
Jehoahaz, the son of
Jehu. “Come, let us meet face to face,” he said.
And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to
Amaziah king of Judah,
saying, The
thistle that was in
Lebanon sent to the
cedar that was in
Lebanon,
saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in
Lebanon, and
trode down the
thistle.
This was the word of the LORD which he spake unto
Jehu,
saying, Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation. And so it came to pass.
So the word of the LORD spoken to
Jehu was fulfilled: “Four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.”
So
Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria,
saying, I am thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.
So
Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria,
saying, “I am your servant and your son. Come up and save me from the hands of the kings of
Aram and Israel, who are rising up against me.”
And king
Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest,
saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meat offering, and the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and
sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the
brasen altar shall be for me to
enquire by.
Then King
Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, “Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king’s burnt offering and grain offering, as well as the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings of all the people of the land.
Sprinkle on the altar all the blood of the burnt offerings and sacrifices. But I will use the bronze altar to seek guidance.”
Yet the LORD
testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers,
saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.
Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD
warned Israel and Judah,
saying, “Turn from your wicked ways and keep My commandments and statutes, according to the entire Law that I commanded your fathers and delivered to you through My servants the prophets.”
Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria,
saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they
slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.
So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The peoples that you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land. Because of this, He has sent lions among them, which are indeed killing them off.”
Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.
Then the king of Assyria commanded: “Send back one of the priests you carried off from Samaria, and have him go back to live there and teach the requirements of the God of the land.”
With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them
saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow
yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:
For the LORD had made a covenant with the Israelites and commanded them, “Do not worship other gods or bow down to them; do not serve them or sacrifice to them.
And
Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to
Lachish,
saying, I have
offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto
Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
So
Hezekiah king of Judah sent word to the king of Assyria at
Lachish,
saying, “I have done wrong; withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand from me.” And the king of Assyria exacted from
Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed,
saying to Judah and Jerusalem: ‘You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?
Then
Rab-shakeh stood and
cried with a loud voice in the Jews language, and spake,
saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:
Then the
Rabshakeh stood and called out loudly in Hebrew: “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria!
Neither let
Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD,
saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Do not let
Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and
hearken not unto
Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you,
saying, The LORD will deliver us.
until I come and take you away to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey—so that you may live and not die. But do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for he misleads you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’
But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people remained silent and did not answer a word, for
Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of
Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto
Hezekiah,
saying,
Thus shall ye speak to
Hezekiah king of Judah,
saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest
deceive thee,
saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
“Give this message to
Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust,
deceive you by
saying that Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to
Hezekiah,
saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against
Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to
Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning
Sennacherib king of Assyria.
Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying,
Then
Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
saying,
And it came to pass,
afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him,
saying,
Before Isaiah had left the middle
courtyard, the word of the LORD came to him,
saying,
And the LORD spake by his servants the prophets, saying,
And the LORD spoke through His servants the prophets, saying,
And it came to pass in the
eighteenth year of king
Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the
scribe, to the house of the LORD,
saying,
Now in the
eighteenth year of his reign, King
Josiah sent the
scribe, Shaphan son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, to the house of the LORD,
saying,
And Shaphan the
scribe shewed the king,
saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.
Moreover, Shaphan the
scribe told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.
And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the
scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the king’s,
saying,
and commanded Hilkiah the priest,
Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the
scribe, and Asaiah the servant of the king:
And the king commanded all the people,
saying, Keep the
passover unto the LORD your God, as it is written in the book of this covenant.
The king commanded all the people, “Keep the
Passover of the LORD your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”
And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.
Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, “Because I bore him in pain.”
And Jabez called on the God of Israel,
saying, Oh that thou wouldest
bless me indeed, and
enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not
grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would
bless me and
enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from
harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.
Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto
Hebron,
saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.
Then all Israel came together to David at
Hebron and said, “Here we are, your own flesh and blood.
And said, My God
forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in
jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come
peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be
knit unto you: but if ye be come to
betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look
thereon, and
rebuke it.
And David went out to meet them,
saying, “If you have come to me in peace to help me, my heart will be united with you; but if you have come to
betray me to my enemies when my hands are free of violence, may the God of our fathers see it and judge you.”
And there fell some of
Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon
advisement sent him away,
saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the
jeopardy of our heads.
Some from
Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (They did not help the Philistines because the
Philistine rulers consulted and sent David away,
saying, “It will cost us our heads if he defects to his master Saul.”)
And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?
That day David feared God and asked, “How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?”
And David enquired of God,
saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into thine hand.
So David inquired of God, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.”
Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of
Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;
‘I will give you the land of
Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.’
Saying, Touch not mine
anointed, and do my prophets no
harm.
And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to
Nathan,
saying,
But that night the word of God came to
Nathan,
saying,
Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people,
saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?
In all My journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever asked any of the leaders I appointed to
shepherd My people, ‘Why
haven’t you built Me a house of
cedar?’
Let it even be established, that thy name may be
magnified for ever,
saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.
so that Your name will be established and
magnified forever when it is said, ‘The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, is God over Israel.’ And may the house of Your servant David be established before You.
And the LORD spake unto
Gad, David’s
seer,
saying,
Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
And David went up at the
saying of
Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.
So David went up at the word that
Gad had spoken in the name of the LORD.
But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build an house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.
but this word of the LORD came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and
waged great wars. You are not to build a house for My Name because you have shed so much blood on the ground before Me.
David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,
Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon:
And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre,
saying, As thou
didst deal with David my father, and
didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.
Then Solomon sent word to
Hiram king of Tyre: “Do for me as you did for my father David when you sent him cedars to build himself a house to live in.
It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and
thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the
trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD,
saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;
The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise and
thank the LORD with one voice. They lifted up their voices, accompanied by
trumpets, cymbals, and musical instruments, in praise to the LORD: “For He is good; His loving devotion endures
forever.” And the temple, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who hath with his hands fulfilled that which he spake with his mouth to my father David, saying,
and said: “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has fulfilled with His own hand what He spoke with His mouth to my father David, saying,
Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him,
saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take
heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me.
Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk in My law as you have walked before Me.’
Yet if they
bethink themselves in the land
whither they are carried
captive, and turn and pray unto thee in the land of their captivity,
saying, We have
sinned, we have done
amiss, and have dealt wickedly;
and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they
repent and
plead with You in the land of their captors,
saying, ‘We have
sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’
And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the
pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD,
saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they bowed down on the
pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave
thanks to the LORD: “For He is good; His loving devotion endures
forever.”
And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of musick of the LORD, which David the king had made to praise the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded
trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.
The priests stood at their posts, as did the Levites with the musical instruments of the LORD, which King David had made for giving
thanks to the LORD and with which David had offered praise,
saying, “For His loving devotion endures
forever.” Across from the Levites, the priests sounded
trumpets, and all the Israelites were standing.
Then will I
stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father,
saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.
then I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with your father David when I said, ‘You will never fail to have a man to rule over Israel.’
And they sent and called him. So
Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to
Rehoboam,
saying,
And king
Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived,
saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
Then King
Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you
advise me to
respond to these people?” he asked.
And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants
forever.”
And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
He asked them, “What message do you
advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me,
saying, ‘
Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.
The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you should make it lighter.’ This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s
waist!
So
Jeroboam and all the people came to
Rehoboam on the third day, as the king
bade,
saying, Come again to me on the third day.
After three days,
Jeroboam and all the people returned to
Rehoboam, since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”
And answered them after the advice of the young men,
saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add
thereto: my father
chastised you with whips, but I will
chastise you with scorpions.
and spoke to them as the young men had
advised,
saying, “Whereas my father made your yoke heavy, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father
scourged you with whips, I will
scourge you with scorpions.”
And when all Israel saw that the king would not
hearken unto them, the people answered the king,
saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of
Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
When all Israel saw that the king had refused to
listen to them, they answered the king: “What portion do we have in David, and what inheritance in the son of
Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So all the Israelites went home,
But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God:
Speak unto
Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin,
saying,
“Tell
Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah and all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin
And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah,
saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some
deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of
Shishak.
When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah,
saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but will soon grant them
deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through
Shishak.

Then
Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben-
hadad king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus,
saying,
So
Asa withdrew the silver and gold from the
treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he sent it with this message to Ben-
hadad king of
Aram, who was ruling in Damascus:
And the
messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him,
saying, Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent; let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
And the LORD said, Who shall
entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at
Ramoth-
gilead? And one spake
saying after this manner, and another
saying after that manner.
And the LORD said, ‘Who will
entice Ahab king of Israel to march up and fall at
Ramoth-
gilead?’ And one suggested this, and another that.
Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the
chariots that were with him,
saying, Fight ye not with small or great, save only with the king of Israel.
Now the king of
Aram had ordered his
chariot commanders, “Do not fight with
anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel.”
And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
He commanded them, saying, “You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the LORD.
Then there came some that told
Jehoshaphat,
saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi.
Then some men came and told
Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from
Edom, from beyond the Sea; they are already in Hazazon-tamar” (that is, En-gedi).
And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,
They have lived in the land and have built in it a sanctuary for Your Name, saying,
And there came a writing to him from
Elijah the prophet,
saying, Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of
Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of
Asa king of Judah,
Then a letter came to Jehoram from
Elijah the prophet, which stated: “This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in the ways of your father
Jehoshaphat or of
Asa king of Judah,
Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and
whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said,
Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army,
saying, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
But he
slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded,
saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
Yet he did not put their sons to death, but acted according to what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded: “Fathers must not be put to death for their children, and children must not be put to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.”
