for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, as does a father the son in whom he delights.
My
son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and
discretion:
My
son, do not lose sight of this: Preserve sound judgment and
discernment.

Listen, my
sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.
For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
When I was a son to my father, tender and the only child of my mother,
Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
Listen, my
son, and receive my words, and the years of your life will be many.
My
son, attend to my words;
incline thine ear unto my sayings.
My
son, pay attention to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
My
son, pay attention to my wisdom;
incline your ear to my insight,
Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

sons,
listen to me, and do not turn aside from the words of my mouth.
And why
wilt thou, my
son, be
ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the
bosom of a stranger?
My
son, if thou be
surety for thy friend, if thou hast
stricken thy hand with a stranger,
My
son, if you have put up security for your
neighbor, if you have struck hands in
pledge with a stranger,
Do this now, my
son, deliver
thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble
thyself, and make sure thy friend.
My
son, keep thy father’s commandment, and
forsake not the law of thy mother:
My
son, keep your father’s commandment, and do not
forsake your mother’s teaching.
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
My
son, keep my words and
treasure my commandments within you.
Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
Now, my
sons,
listen to me, and attend to the words of my mouth.
Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
“To you, O men, I call out, and my cry is to the sons of men.
Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the
sons of men.
I was
rejoicing in His whole world, delighting together in the
sons of men.
Now therefore
hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
Now therefore, my
sons,
listen to me, for blessed are those who keep my ways.

scorner heareth not
rebuke.

The words of
Agur the
son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
These are the words of
Agur son of Jakeh—the burden that this man declared to Ithiel: “I am
weary, O God, and worn out.
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has bound up the waters in His
cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is the name of His
Son— surely you know!
What, my
son? and what, the
son of my
womb? and what, the
son of my vows?
What shall I say, O my
son? What, O
son of my
womb? What, O
son of my vows?
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
These are the words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem:
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this
sore travail hath God given to the
sons of man to be exercised
therewith.
And I set my mind to seek and
explore by wisdom all that is done under heaven. What a heavy burden God has laid upon the
sons of men to occupy them!
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet
acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the
sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I sought to
cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what was
worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.
I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar
treasure of kings and of the provinces: I
gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the
sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.
and I accumulated for myself silver and gold and the
treasure of kings and provinces. I gathered to myself male and female singers, and the delights of the
sons of men—many concubines.
I have seen the
travail, which God hath given to the
sons of men to be exercised in it.
I have seen the burden that God has laid upon the sons of men to occupy them.
I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
I said to myself, “As for the sons of men, God tests them so that they may see for themselves that they are but beasts.”
For that which befalleth the
sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other;
yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
For the fates of both men and beasts are the same: As one dies, so dies the other—they all have the same breath. Man has no advantage over the animals, since everything is
futile.
There is one alone, and there is not a second;
yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and
bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity,
yea, it is a
sore travail.
There is a man all alone, without even a
son or brother. And though there is no end to his labor, his eyes are still not content with his wealth: “For whom do I
toil and
bereave my soul of enjoyment?” This too is
futile—a
miserable task.
But those riches perish by evil
travail: and he begetteth a
son, and there is nothing in his hand.
or wealth lost in a failed
venture, so when that man has a
son there is nothing to pass on.
It is better to hear the
rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the
song of fools.
Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
When the sentence for a crime is not speedily executed, the hearts of men become fully set on doing evil.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all:
yea, also the heart of the
sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive, and afterward they join the dead.
For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the
snare; so are the
sons of men
snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.
For surely no man knows his time: Like fish caught in a cruel net or birds
trapped in a
snare, so men are ensnared in an evil time that suddenly falls upon them.
Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the
son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for
drunkenness!
Blessed are you, O land whose king is a
son of nobles, and whose princes feast at the proper time— for strength and not for
drunkenness.
And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the
grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
when the doors to the street are shut and the sound of the mill fades away, when one rises at the sound of a bird and all the daughters of
song grow
faint,
And further, by these, my
son, be
admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a
weariness of the flesh.
And by these, my
son, be further
warned: There is no end to the making of many books, and much study wearies the body.
The song of songs, which is Solomon’s.
This is Solomon’s Song of Songs.
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were
angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own
vineyard have I not kept.
Do not
stare because I am dark, for the sun has
gazed upon me. My mother’s
sons were
angry with me; they made me a keeper of the vineyards, but my own
vineyard I have neglected.
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
The vision of Isaiah the
son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham,
Ahaz, and
Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
This is the vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah
son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham,
Ahaz, and
Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
This is the message that was revealed to Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a
song of my beloved touching his
vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a
vineyard in a very fruitful hill:
I will sing for my beloved a
song of his
vineyard: My beloved had a
vineyard on a very fertile hill.
And it came to pass in the days of
Ahaz the
son of Jotham, the
son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the
son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
Now in the days that
Ahaz son of Jotham, the
son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, Rezin king of
Aram marched up to
wage war against Jerusalem. He was accompanied by Pekah
son of Remaliah the king of Israel, but he could not overpower the city.
Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet
Ahaz, thou, and
Shear-jashub thy
son, at the end of the
conduit of the upper
pool in the
highway of the fuller’s field;
Then the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out with your
son Shear-jashub to meet
Ahaz at the end of the
aqueduct that feeds the upper
pool, on the road to the
Launderer’s Field,
And say unto him, Take
heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be
fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the
son of Remaliah.
and say to him: Calm down and be quiet. Do not be afraid or
disheartened over these two
smoldering stubs of
firewood—over the fierce anger of Rezin and
Aram and of the
son of Remaliah.
Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying,
For
Aram, along with Ephraim and the
son of Remaliah, has
plotted your ruin, saying:
Let us go up against Judah, and
vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the
son of Tabeal:
‘Let us
invade Judah,
terrorize it, and divide it among ourselves. Then we can
install the
son of Tabeal over it as king.’
And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.
The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you do not stand firm in your faith, then you will not stand at all.’”
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a
son, and shall call his name
Immanuel.
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a
son, and will call Him
Immanuel.
And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and
Zechariah the
son of Jeberechiah.
And I went unto the
prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a
son. Then said the LORD to me, Call his name Maher-shalal-
hash-baz.
And I had relations with the
prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a
son. The LORD said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-
hash-baz.
Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and
rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s
son;
“Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and
rejoiced in Rezin and the
son of Remaliah,
For unto us a child is born, unto us a
son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The
everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a
son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall
spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon
Edom and Moab; and the children of
Ammon shall obey them.
They will
swoop down on the slopes of the Philistines to the west; together they will
plunder the
sons of the east. They will lay their hands on
Edom and Moab, and the
Ammonites will be subject to them.
Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. For the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and He also has become my salvation.”
The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
This is the burden against Babylon that Isaiah son of Amoz received:
That thou shalt take up this
proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the
oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
you will sing this
song of contempt against the king of Babylon: How the
oppressor has ceased, and how his
fury has ended!
The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
All the earth is at peace and at rest; they break out in song.
How art thou fallen from heaven, O
Lucifer,
son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which
didst weaken the nations!
How you have fallen from heaven, O day star,
son of the
dawn! You have been cut down to the ground, O destroyer of nations.
Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
Prepare a place to slaughter his
sons for the
iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth with their cities.
For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and
remnant, and
son, and nephew, saith the LORD.
“I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD of Hosts. “I will cut off from Babylon her name and her
remnant, her offspring and her
posterity,” declares the LORD.
Surely the princes of Zoan are fools, the counsel of the wise counsellors of Pharaoh is become
brutish: how say ye unto Pharaoh, I am the
son of the wise, the
son of ancient kings?
The princes of Zoan are mere fools; Pharaoh’s wise counselors give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the wise, a son of eastern kings”?
At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the
son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the
sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy
shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and
barefoot.
the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah
son of Amoz, saying, “Go, remove the
sackcloth from your
waist and the
sandals from your feet.” And Isaiah did so, walking around naked and
barefoot.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:
On that day I will
summon My servant, Eliakim
son of Hilkiah.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an
harlot.
At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years—the span of a king’s life. But at the end of seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the
song of the
harlot:
Take an
harp, go about the city, thou
harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet
melody, sing many
songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
“Take up your
harp,
stroll through the city, O forgotten
harlot. Make sweet
melody, sing many a
song, so you will be remembered.”
They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
They no longer sing and drink wine; strong drink is bitter to those who
consume it.
Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.
like heat in a dry land. You
subdue the
uproar of foreigners. As the shade of a cloud cools the heat, so the
song of the
ruthless is silenced.
In that day shall this
song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God
appoint for walls and bulwarks.
In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.
Ye shall have a
song, as in the night when a holy
solemnity is kept; and
gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel.
You will sing as on the night of a holy festival, and your heart will
rejoice like one who walks to the music of a
flute, going up to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel.
Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s
son, which was over the house, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah,
Asaph’s
son, the recorder.
Then Eliakim
son of Hilkiah the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe, and Joah
son of
Asaph the recorder, went out to him.
Then came Eliakim, the
son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah, the
son of
Asaph, the recorder, to
Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of
Rabshakeh.
And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with
sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the
son of Amoz.
And he sent Eliakim the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe, and the leading priests, all wearing
sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah
son of Amoz
Then Isaiah the
son of Amoz sent unto
Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against
Sennacherib king of Assyria:
Then Isaiah
son of Amoz sent a message to
Hezekiah: “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to Me concerning
Sennacherib king of Assyria,
