instructed in the way of the Lord; and being
fervent in the spirit, he
spake and taught
diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

instructed in the way of the Lord and was
fervent in spirit. He spoke and taught accurately about Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.

spake with tongues, and
prophesied.

And he went into the
synagogue, and
spake boldly for the
space of three months, disputing and
persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.
But when
divers were
hardened, and believed not, but
spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one
Tyrannus.
And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

everyone who lived in the province of Asia, Jews and Greeks alike, heard the word of the Lord.
But when they knew that he was a
Jew, all with one voice about the
space of two hours
cried out, Great is
Diana of the
Ephesians.
But when they realized that he was a
Jew, they all
shouted in
unison for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the
Ephesians!”
For I know this, that after my departing shall
grievous wolves enter in among you, not
sparing the flock.
I know that after my departure, savage
wolves will come in among you and will not
spare the flock.

space of three years I ceased not to
warn every one night and day with tears.
Therefore be
alert and remember that for three years I never stopped
warning each of you night and day with tears.

spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,

hush came over the crowd, and he addressed them in Hebrew:
(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
When they heard him speak to them in Hebrew, they became even more silent. Then Paul declared,
And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
My companions saw the light, but they could not understand the voice of the One speaking to me.

thyself; much learning
doth make thee
mad.

But when the Jews
spake against it, I was
constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to
accuse my nation of.
But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, even though I have no charge to bring against my nation.
And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or
spake any
harm of thee.
The leaders replied, “We have not received any letters about you from
Judea, nor have any of the brothers from there reported or even mentioned anything bad about you.
And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

He that
spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
He who did not
spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?
For if God
spared not the natural branches, take
heed lest he also
spare not thee.
For if God did not
spare the natural branches, He will certainly not
spare you either.
Whensoever I take my journey into
Spain, I will come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way
thitherward by you, if first I be somewhat filled with your company.
I hope to see you on my way to
Spain. And after I have enjoyed your company for a while, you can
equip me for my journey.
When therefore I have performed this, and have sealed to them this fruit, I will come by you into Spain.
So after I have completed this service and have safely delivered this
bounty to them, I will set off to
Spain by way of you.
But and if thou marry, thou hast not
sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not
sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I
spare you.
But if you do marry, you have not
sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not
sinned. But those who marry will face troubles in this life, and I want to
spare you this.
When I was a child, I
spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away
childish things.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I set aside
childish ways.
I would that ye all
spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive
edifying.
I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you
prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be
edified.
Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to
spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.
I call God as my witness that it was in order to
spare you that I did not return to Corinth.
For if I have
boasted any thing to him of you, I am not
ashamed; but as we
spake all things to you in truth, even so our
boasting, which I made before
Titus, is found a truth.
Indeed, I was not
embarrassed by anything I had
boasted to him about you. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our
boasting to
Titus has proved to be true as well.
I told you before, and
foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which
heretofore have
sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not
spare:
Where is then the blessedness ye
spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have
plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
What then has become of your blessing? For I can
testify that, if it were possible, you would have
torn out your eyes and given them to me.
For indeed he was sick
nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
He was sick indeed, nearly unto death. But God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, to
spare me sorrow upon sorrow.
God, who at
sundry times and in
divers manners
spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if the people did not escape when they refused Him who
warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we
reject Him who warns us from heaven?
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a
spark sets a great forest
ablaze.
Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

For if God
spared not the angels that
sinned, but cast them down to
hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
For if God did not
spare the angels when they
sinned, but cast them deep into
hell, placing them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;
And
spared not the old world, but saved
Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
if He did not
spare the ancient world when He brought the flood on its ungodly people, but preserved
Noah, a preacher of righteousness, among the eight;
And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands,

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me again, saying, “Go, take the small
scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel standing on the sea and on the land.”
And I
beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he
spake as a
dragon.
Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. This beast had two horns like a lamb, but spoke like a
dragon.
And the winepress was
trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the
space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.
And the winepress was
trodden outside the city, and the blood that flowed from it rose as high as the bridles of the horses for a distance of 1,600
stadia.
And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while.
And he
spake unto the Levites, the holy ministers of Israel, that they should
hallow themselves unto the Lord, to set the holy ark of the Lord in the house that king Solomon the son of David had built:
Nevertheless the God of their fathers sent by his
messenger to call them back, because he
spared them and his tabernacle also.
But they had his messengers in
derision; and, look, when the Lord
spake unto them, they made a
sport of his prophets:
Who
slew their young men with the sword,
yea, even within the compass of their holy temple, and
spared neither young man nor
maid, old man nor child, among them; for he delivered all into their hands.
Then three young men, that were of the guard that kept the king’s body, spake one to another;
And yet he is but one man: if he command to kill, they kill; if he command to
spare, they
spare;

spake wise sentences before
Darius the king of Persia in the second year of his reign, in the month

space of two years, until the reign of
Darius.

spake unto
Esdras the priest and reader, that he would bring the law of Moses, that was given of the Lord God of Israel.
Then
spake Attharates unto
Esdras the chief priest. and reader, and to the Levites that taught the multitude, even to all, saying,
O Lord, who bearest rule, thou
spakest at the beginning, when thou
didst plant the earth, and that
thyself alone, and commandedst the people,
For I have seen how thou sufferest them
sinning, and hast
spared wicked doers: and hast destroyed thy people, and hast preserved thine enemies, and hast not
signified it.
And it happened, that when I had heard it I stood up upon my feet, and
hearkened, and, behold, there was a voice that
spake, and the sound of it was like the sound of many waters.
And I said, O Lord, thou spakest from the beginning of the creation, even the first day, and saidst thus; Let heaven and earth be made; and thy word was a perfect work.
Nevertheless they were not
obedient unto him; but
spake against him, and imagined vain things;
For this is the life
whereof Moses
spake unto the people while he lived, saying, Choose thee life, that thou mayest live.
For thou hast agreed to give ear, and art willing to
prophesy: for thou hast no longer
space than only to live.
Be not
wroth with us but
spare thy people, and have mercy upon thine own inheritance: for thou art
merciful unto thy creature.
Then shalt thou well understand, that the most High spake of those things from the days that were before thee, even from the beginning.
And now when I prepared the world, which was not yet made, even for them to dwell in that now live, no man spake against me.
And I saw, and
spared it greatly, and have kept me a
grape of the
cluster, and a plant of a great people.

And when I
spake these things in my heart, I looked back with mine eyes, and upon the right side I saw a woman, and, behold, she
mourned and
wept with a loud voice, and was much
grieved in heart, and her clothes were rent, and she had ashes upon her head.
Then left I the meditations wherein I was, and spake to her in anger, saying,
And I saw that all things under heaven were subject unto her, and no man spake against her, no, not one creature upon earth.
And I
beheld, and, lo, the eagle rose upon her talons, and
spake to her feathers, saying,
And it came to pass, whiles the lion spake these words unto the eagle, I saw,

As for me. I spake in the day, and I held not my tongue by night.
And it came to pass, when the forty days were filled, that the Highest
spake, saying, The first that thou hast written
publish openly, that the worthy and unworthy may read it:

spare the sinners, and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent blood upon the earth.
I will not
spare them: go your way, ye children, from the power,
defile not my sanctuary.
Behold, the word of the Lord, receive it: believe not the gods of whom the Lord spake.

mad men,
sparing none, but still
spoiling and destroying those that fear the Lord.
And I knew not that there were
sparrows in the wall, and mine eyes being open, the
sparrows muted warm dung into mine eyes, and a whiteness came in mine eyes: and I went to the physicians, but they helped me not: moreover Achiacharus did
nourish me, until I went into Elymais.
Go into Media my son, for I surely believe those things which
Jonas the prophet
spake of Nineve, that it shall be overthrown; and that for a time peace shall rather be in Media; and that our brethren shall lie scattered in the earth from that good land: and Jerusalem shall be
desolate, and the house of God in it shall be burned, and shall be
desolate for a time;
And now, my son, depart out of Nineve, because that those things which the prophet
Jonas spake shall surely come to pass.
But concerning them that
rebel, let not thine eye
spare them; but put them to the slaughter, and
spoil them
wheresoever thou goest.

murmured, and the chief men of Holofernes, and all that dwelt by the sea side, and in Moab,
spake that he should kill him.

endure five days, in the which
space the Lord our God may turn his mercy toward us; for he will not
forsake us utterly.
Now
Judith had commanded her
maid to stand without her
bedchamber, and to wait for her. coming forth, as she did daily: for she said she would go forth to her prayers, and she
spake to Bagoas according to the same purpose.
And God turn these things to thee for a perpetual praise, to visit thee in good things because thou hast not
spared thy life for the
affliction of our nation, but hast
revenged our ruin, walking a straight way before our God. And all the people said; So be it, so be it.
Now therefore tell me all the things that thou hast done in these days. Then
Judith declared unto him in the midst of the people all that she had done, from the day that she went forth until that hour she
spake unto them.
And the people
spoiled the camp the
space of thirty days: and they gave unto
Judith Holofernes his tent, and all his plate, and beds, and vessels, and all his stuff: and she took it and laid it on her
mule; and made ready her carts, and laid them
thereon.
Let all creatures serve thee: for thou
spakest, and they were made, thou
didst send forth thy spirit, and it created them, and there is none that can resist thy voice.
So the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for the
space of three months and
Judith remained with them.
And now, O Lord God and King,
spare thy people: for their eyes are upon us to bring us to
nought;
yea, they desire to destroy the inheritance, that hath been thine from the beginning.
For we are born at all
adventure: and we shall be
hereafter as though we had never been: for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke, and a little
spark in the moving of our heart:
Let us
oppress the poor righteous man, let us not
spare the widow, nor reverence the ancient gray hairs of the aged.
Or unknown wild beasts, full of
rage, newly created, breathing out either a
fiery vapour, or
filthy scents of scattered smoke, or shooting
horrible sparkles out of their eyes:
