hearkened not unto Moses for
anguish of
spirit, and for cruel
bondage.

listen to him.
And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the
spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to
consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

instruct all the skilled
craftsmen, whom I have filled with a
spirit of wisdom, to make garments for Aaron’s
consecration, so that he may serve Me as priest.
And I have filled him with the
spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of

Regard not them that have familiar
spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be
defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.
You must not turn to mediums or
spiritists; do not seek them out, or you will be
defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.
And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar
spirits, and after wizards, to go a
whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.
Whoever turns to mediums or
spiritists to
prostitute himself with them, I will also set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.
A man also or woman that hath a familiar
spirit, or that is a
wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them.
A man or a woman who is a medium or
spiritist must surely be put to death. They shall be stoned; their blood is upon them.’”

jealous of his wife, and she be
defiled: or if the
spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be
jealous of his wife, and she be not
defiled:
and if a feeling of jealousy comes over her husband and he suspects his wife who has
defiled herself—or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him and he suspects her even though she has not
defiled herself—
Or when the
spirit of jealousy cometh upon him, and he be
jealous over his wife, and shall set the woman before the LORD, and the priest shall
execute upon her all this law.

And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the
spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not
thyself alone.

Spirit that is on you and put that
Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by
yourself.

spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the
spirit rested upon them, they
prophesied, and did not cease.

prophesied in the camp.

Spirit on them!”

Caleb, because he had another
spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land
whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.

inherit it.
And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the
spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and

wroth with all the congregation?
But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and said, “O God, the God of the
spirits of all flesh, when one man sins, will You be
angry with the whole congregation?”
And
Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel
abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the
spirit of God came upon him.
When
Balaam looked up and saw Israel
encamped tribe by tribe, the
Spirit of God came upon him,
Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,
“May the LORD, the God of the
spirits of all flesh,
appoint a man over the congregation
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of
Nun, a man in whom is the
spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;
And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of
Nun, a man with the
Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
But Sihon king of
Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God
hardened his
spirit, and made his heart
obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
But Sihon king of
Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his
spirit stubborn and his heart
obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as is the case this day.

spiritist, or inquires of the dead.
And Joshua the son of
Nun was full of the
spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel
hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Now Joshua son of
Nun was filled with the
spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there
spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their
spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.

Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which

Then the
Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the
Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the
Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.
But God
clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his
spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.

spirits, he went to lie down at the end of the
heap of grain. Then
Ruth went in secretly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful
spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in
spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
And the
Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt
prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
Then the
Spirit of the LORD will
rush upon you, and you will
prophesy with them; and you will be transformed into a different person.
And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the
Spirit of God came upon him, and he
prophesied among them.

Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he
prophesied along with them.
And the

Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he burned with great anger.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and
anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the
Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to

Spirit of the LORD
rushed upon David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to
Ramah.
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
After the
Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, a
spirit of distress from the LORD began to
torment him.
And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely a
spirit of distress from God is
tormenting you.
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil
spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the
spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
And it came to pass, when the evil
spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an
harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil
spirit departed from him.
And whenever the
spirit from God came upon Saul, David would
pick up his
harp and play, and Saul would become well, and the
spirit of distress would depart from him.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the evil
spirit from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s hand.
The next day a
spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
And the evil
spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his
javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
But as Saul was sitting in his house with his
spear in his hand, a
spirit of distress from the LORD came upon him. While David was playing the
harp,
And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets
prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the
Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also
prophesied.

prophesying, with Samuel leading them, the
Spirit of God came upon them, and Saul’s messengers also began to
prophesy.
And he went thither to Naioth in
Ramah: and the
Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and
prophesied, until he came to Naioth in
Ramah.
So Saul went to Naioth in
Ramah. But the
Spirit of God came upon even Saul, and he walked along
prophesying until he came to Naioth in
Ramah.
And
Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was
merry within him, for he was very
drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.
When
Abigail returned to Nabal, there he was in the house, holding a feast fit for a king, in high
spirits and very
drunk. So she told him nothing until morning light.
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had
lamented him, and buried him in
Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar
spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.
Now by this time Samuel had died, and all Israel had
mourned for him and buried him in
Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed the mediums and
spiritists from the land.
Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar
spirit, that I may go to her, and
enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar
spirit at
Endor.
Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and
consult her.” “There is a medium at
Endor,” his servants replied.
And Saul
disguised himself, and put on other
raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar
spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “
Consult a
spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar
spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a
snare for my life, to cause me to die?
But the woman replied, “Surely you know what Saul has done, how he has killed the mediums and
spiritists in the land. Why have you set a
trap to get me killed?”
And they gave him a piece of a
cake of figs, and two clusters of
raisins: and when he had eaten, his
spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor
drunk any water, three days and three nights.
a piece of a fig
cake and two clusters of
raisins. So he
ate and was revived, for he had not had any food or water for three days and three nights.
The Spirit of the LORD spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; His word was on my tongue.
And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their
apparel, and his cupbearers, and his
ascent by which he went up unto the house of the LORD; there was no more
spirit in her.
the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the service and
attire of his attendants and cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath away.
And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the
Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee
whither I know not; and so when I come and tell
Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall
slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.
I do not know where the
Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell
Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.
But
Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy
spirit so
sad, that thou eatest no bread?
Soon his wife
Jezebel came in and asked, “Why are you so
sullen that you refuse to eat?”
And there came forth a
spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will
persuade him.
Then a
spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By what means?’ asked the LORD.
And the LORD said unto him,
Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying
spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt
persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so.
And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying
spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ ‘You will surely
entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’
Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.
So you see, the LORD has put a lying
spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours, and the LORD has pronounced
disaster against you.”
But
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and
smote Micaiah on the
cheek, and said, Which way went the
Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?
Then
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in the face, and demanded, “Which way did the
Spirit of the LORD go when He departed from me to speak with you?”
And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that
Elijah said unto
Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And
Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy
spirit be upon me.
After they had crossed over,
Elijah said to
Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken away from you?” “Please, let me
inherit a double portion of your
spirit,”
Elisha replied.
And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at
Jericho saw him, they said, The
spirit of
Elijah doth rest on
Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
When the sons of the prophets who were facing him from
Jericho saw what had happened, they said, “The
spirit of
Elijah rests on
Elisha.” And they went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest
peradventure the
Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send.
“Look now,” they said to
Elisha, “we your servants have fifty
valiant men. Please let them go and search for your master. Perhaps the
Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and put him on one of the mountains or in one of the valleys.” “Do not send them,”
Elisha replied.
And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his
chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
But
Elisha questioned him, “Did not my
spirit go with you when the man got down from his
chariot to meet you? Is this the time to accept money and clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, menservants and maidservants?
Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
Behold, I will put a
spirit in him so that he will hear a
rumor and return to his own land, where I will cause him to fall by the sword.’”
And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar
spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced
sorcery and
divination, and consulted mediums and
spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
Moreover the workers with familiar
spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were
spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did
Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.
Furthermore,
Josiah removed the mediums and
spiritists, the household gods and idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. He did this to carry out the words of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of the LORD.
And the God of Israel
stirred up the
spirit of
Pul king of Assyria, and the
spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, even the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of
Manasseh, and brought them unto Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and to the river Gozan, unto this day.
So the God of Israel
stirred up the
spirit of
Pul king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria) to take the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh into exile. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan, where they remain to this day.
So Saul died for his
transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar
spirit, to
enquire of it;
So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance,
Then the
spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of
Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.
Then the
Spirit came upon Amasai, the chief of the Thirty, and he said: “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of
Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you.” So David received them and made them leaders of his troops.
And the pattern of all that he had by the
spirit, of the courts of the house of the LORD, and of all the chambers round about, of the
treasuries of the house of God, and of the
treasuries of the dedicated things:
The plans contained everything David had in mind for the courts of the house of the LORD, for all the surrounding rooms, for the
treasuries of the house of God and of the dedicated things,
And the meat of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their

apparel; and his
ascent by which he went up into the house of the LORD; there was no more
spirit in her.
the food at his table, the seating of his servants, the service and
attire of his attendants and cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath away.
And the
Spirit of God came upon
Azariah the son of
Oded:
Then there came out a
spirit, and stood before the LORD, and said, I will
entice him. And the LORD said unto him,
Wherewith?
Then a
spirit came forward, stood before the LORD, and said, ‘I will
entice him.’ ‘By what means?’ asked the LORD.
And he said, I will go out, and be a lying
spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the LORD said, Thou shalt
entice him, and thou shalt also prevail: go out, and do even so.
And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying
spirit in the mouths of all his prophets.’ ‘You will surely
entice him and prevail,’ said the LORD. ‘Go and do it.’
Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil against thee.
So you see, the LORD has put a lying
spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours, and the LORD has pronounced
disaster against you.”
Then
Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and
smote Micaiah upon the

Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?
Then
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah went up, struck Micaiah in the face, and demanded, “Which way did the
Spirit of the LORD go when He departed from me to speak with you?”
Then upon Jahaziel the son of
Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a
Levite of the sons of
Asaph, came the
Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation;
Then the
Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel son of
Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a
Levite from
Asaph’s descendants, as he stood in the midst of the assembly.
Moreover the LORD
stirred up against Jehoram the
spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians, that were near the Ethiopians:
Then the LORD
stirred against Jehoram the
spirit of the Philistines and Arabs who lived near the Cushites.
And the
Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why
transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot
prosper? because ye have
forsaken the LORD, he hath also
forsaken you.
Then the
Spirit of God came upon
Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood up before the people and said to them, “This is what God says: ‘Why do you
transgress the commandments of the LORD so that you cannot
prosper? Because you have
forsaken the LORD, He has
forsaken you.’”
And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of
Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used
witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar
spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger.
He sacrificed his sons in the fire in the Valley of
Hinnom. He practiced
sorcery,
divination, and
witchcraft, and consulted mediums and
spiritists. He did great evil in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger.
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD
stirred up the
spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to
fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD
stirred the
spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a
proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD
stirred up the
spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to
fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD
stirred the
spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a
proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.
So the family heads of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites—
everyone whose
spirit God had
stirred—prepared to go up and rebuild the house of the LORD in Jerusalem.
Thou gavest also thy good
spirit to
instruct them, and withheldest not thy
manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their
thirst.
You gave Your good
Spirit to
instruct them. You did not
withhold Your
manna from their mouths, and You gave them water for their
thirst.
Yet many years
didst thou
forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy
spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
You were patient with them for many years, and Your
Spirit admonished them through Your prophets. Yet they would not
listen, so You gave them into the hands of the
neighboring peoples.
Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
For the arrows of the
Almighty are within me, the poison
whereof drinketh up my
spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in
array against me.
For the arrows of the
Almighty have pierced me; my
spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are
arrayed against me.
Therefore I will not
refrain my mouth; I will speak in the
anguish of my
spirit; I will
complain in the bitterness of my soul.
Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the
anguish of my
spirit; I will
complain in the bitterness of my soul.
Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy
visitation hath preserved my
spirit.
You have granted me life and loving devotion, and Your care has preserved my spirit.
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
as you turn your spirit against God and pour such words from your mouth?
My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the graves are ready for me.
“My
spirit is broken; my days are
extinguished; the grave awaits me.
I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer.
I have heard a
rebuke that insults me, and my understanding prompts a reply.
As for me, is my
complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my
spirit be troubled?
Is my
complaint against a man? Then why should I not be impatient?
To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?
To whom have you uttered these words? And whose spirit spoke through you?
