But Job answered and said,
Then Job answered:
How hast thou helped him that is without power? how savest thou the arm that hath no strength?
“How you have helped the powerless and saved the arm that is feeble!
How hast thou counseled him that hath no wisdom? and how hast thou
plentifully declared
the thing as it is?
How you have counseled the unwise and provided fully sound insight!
To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose spirit came from thee?
To whom have you uttered these words? And whose spirit spoke through you?
Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.
The dead
tremble— those beneath
the waters and those who dwell in
them.
He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth upon nothing.
He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.
He wraps up
the waters in His clouds, yet
the clouds do not
burst under
their own weight.
He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.
He covers the face of the full moon, spreading over it His cloud.
He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.
He has inscribed a horizon on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.
He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.
By his spirit he hath
garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed
the crooked serpent.
By His breath
the skies were cleared; His hand pierced
the fleeing serpent.
Lo,
these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but
the thunder of his power who can understand?
Indeed,
these are but
the fringes of His ways; how
faint is
the whisper we hear of Him! Who
then can understand
the thunder of His power?”
As God liveth, who hath taken away my judgment; and
the Almighty, who hath
vexed my soul;
“As surely as God lives, who has deprived me of justice—
the Almighty, who has embittered my soul—
All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
as long as my breath is still within me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils,
Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.
May my enemy be like
the wicked and my
opponent like
the unjust.
For what is
the hope of
the hypocrite, though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?
For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?
Will he delight himself in
the Almighty? will he always call upon God?
Will he delight in
the Almighty? Will he call upon God at all times?
I will teach you by
the hand of God: that which is with
the Almighty will I not
conceal.
Behold, all ye
yourselves have seen it; why
then are ye thus altogether vain?
Surely all of you have seen it for
yourselves. Why
then do you keep up this empty talk?
This is
the portion of a wicked man with God, and
the heritage of oppressors, which
they shall receive of
the Almighty.

weep.
His survivors will be buried by
the plague, and
their widows will not
weep for
them.
Though he
heap up silver as
the dust, and prepare
raiment as
the clay;
Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a
wardrobe like clay,
He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.
what he lays up, the righteous will wear, and his silver will be divided by the innocent.
He buildeth his house as a
moth, and as a
booth that
the keeper maketh.
The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.
He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone.
Terrors take hold on him as waters, a
tempest stealeth him away in
the night.
Terrors overtake him like a flood; a
tempest sweeps him away in
the night.
The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.
The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; it sweeps him out of his place.

clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

the earth, and brass is
molten out of
the stone.
Iron is taken from
the earth, and copper is
smelted from ore.
He setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out all perfection: the stones of darkness, and the shadow of death.
Man puts an end to
the darkness; he probes
the farthest recesses for ore in deepest darkness.

habitation he cuts a shaft in places forgotten by
the foot of man. Far from men he dangles and sways.

Food may come from the earth, but from below it is transformed as by fire.

Its rocks are the source of sapphires, containing flecks of gold.

the vulture’s eye hath not seen:
No bird of prey knows that path; no
falcon’s eye has seen it.

trodden it, nor
the fierce lion passed by it.
He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots.

He cutteth out rivers among
the rocks; and his eye
seeth every precious thing.

the rocks, and his eyes spot every
treasure.

the floods from overflowing; and
the thing that is
hid bringeth he forth to light.

But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
But where can wisdom be found, and where does understanding dwell?
Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living.
No man can know its value, nor is it found in the land of the living.
The depth saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me.
The ocean depths say, ‘It is not in me,’ while the sea declares, ‘It is not with me.’
It cannot be
gotten for gold, neither shall silver be
weighed for
the price
thereof.
It cannot be bought with gold, nor can its price be
weighed out in silver.
The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.

Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
From where then does wisdom come, and where does understanding dwell?
Seeing it is
hid from
the eyes of all living, and kept close from
the fowls of
the air.
It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing and concealed from the birds of the air.

the ends of
the earth, and
seeth under
the whole heaven;
For He looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.
To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure.
When God fixed the weight of the wind and measured out the waters,
when He set a limit for
the rain and a path for
the thunderbolt,
Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it,
yea, and searched it out.
then He looked at wisdom and
appraised it; He established it and searched it out.
And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me;
“How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me,
When his
candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
when His lamp
shone above my head, and by His light I walked through
the darkness,
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
when I was in my prime, when the friendship of God rested on my tent,
When
the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
when
the Almighty was still with me and my children were around me,
When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
when my steps were bathed in
cream and
the rock poured out for me streams of oil!
When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street!
When I went out to the city gate and took my seat in the public square,
The young men saw me, and
hid themselves: and
the aged arose, and stood up.
the young men saw me and withdrew, and the old men rose to their feet.
The princes
refrained talking, and laid
their hand on
their mouth.
The princes
refrained from speaking and covered
their mouths with
their hands.
The nobles held
their peace, and
their tongue
cleaved to
the roof of
their mouth.
The voices of
the nobles were
hushed, and
their tongues
stuck to
the roofs of
their mouths.
When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me:
For those who heard me called me blessed, and those who saw me
commended me,
Because I delivered
the poor that
cried, and
the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.
because I
rescued the poor who
cried out and
the fatherless who had no helper.
The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.
The dying man blessed me, and I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.
I was eyes to
the blind, and feet was I to
the lame.
I served as eyes to
the blind and as feet to
the lame.
I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.
I was a father to
the needy, and I took up
the case of
the stranger.
Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
So I thought: ‘I will die in my nest and multiply my days as the sand.
My root was spread out by
the waters, and
the dew lay all night upon my branch.
My roots will spread out to
the waters, and
the dew will rest nightly on my branches.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
After my words,
they spoke no more; my speech settled on
them like
dew.
And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
They waited for me as for rain and
drank in my words like spring showers.
If I
laughed on
them,
they believed it not; and
the light of my countenance
they cast not down.
If I
smiled at
them,
they did not believe it;
the light of my countenance was precious.
I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.
I chose their course and presided as chief. So I dwelt as a king among his troops, as a comforter of the mourners.
But now
they that are younger than I have me in
derision, whose fathers I would have
disdained to have set with
the dogs of my flock.
“But now
they mock me, men younger than I am, whose fathers I would have refused to
entrust with my sheep dogs.
Yea,
whereto might
the strength of
their hands profit me, in whom old age was perished?
What use to me was
the strength of
their hands, since
their vigor had left
them?
For want and famine
they were solitary;
fleeing into
the wilderness in former time
desolate and waste.
They were driven forth from among men, (
they cried after
them as after a
thief;)
To dwell in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
so that they lived on the slopes of the wadis, among the rocks and in holes in the ground.
Among
the bushes
they brayed; under
the nettles they were gathered together.
They were children of fools,
yea, children of base men:
they were viler than
the earth.
A senseless and nameless
brood,
they were driven off
the land.
And now am I
their song,
yea, I am
their byword.
And now
they mock me in song; I have become a
byword among
them.
Because he hath loosed my cord, and
afflicted me,
they have also let loose
the bridle before me.
Because God has unstrung my bow and
afflicted me,
they have cast off restraint in my presence.
Upon my right hand rise
the youth;
they push away my feet, and
they raise up against me
the ways of
their destruction.
The rabble arises at my right;
they lay snares for my feet and build siege ramps against me.
They mar my path,
they set forward my
calamity,
they have no helper.
They tear up my path;
they profit from my destruction, with no one to restrain
them.
They came upon me as a wide breaking in of waters: in
the desolation they rolled
themselves upon me.
They advance as through a wide breach; through the ruins they keep rolling in.
Terrors are turned upon me:
they pursue my soul as
the wind: and my
welfare passeth away as a cloud.
Terrors are turned loose against me; they drive away my dignity as by the wind, and my prosperity has passed like a cloud.
And now my soul is poured out upon me;
the days of
affliction have taken hold upon me.
My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest.
Night pierces my bones, and my
gnawing pains never rest.
By
the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it bindeth me about as
the collar of my coat.
With great force He grasps my garment; He seizes me by
the collar of my
tunic.
He hath cast me into
the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.
He throws me into the mud, and I have become like dust and ashes.
I cry unto
thee, and thou
dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.
I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer; when I stand up, You merely look at me.
Thou liftest me up to
the wind; thou causest me to
ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.
You
snatch me up into
the wind and drive me before it; You
toss me about in
the storm.
