For I know that thou
wilt bring me to death, and to
the house appointed for all living.
Yes, I know that You will bring me down to death, to
the place appointed for all
the living.
Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to
the grave, though
they cry in his destruction.
Yet no one stretches out his hand to a ruined man when he
cries for help in his distress.
Did not I
weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul
grieved for
the poor?
When I looked for good, then evil came unto me: and when I waited for light, there came darkness.
But when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, darkness fell.
I went
mourning without
the sun: I stood up, and I
cried in
the congregation.
I go about
blackened, but not by
the sun. I stand up in
the assembly and cry for help.
My
harp also is turned to
mourning, and my organ into
the voice of
them that
weep.
I made a covenant with mine eyes; why
then should I think upon a
maid?
“I have made a covenant with my eyes. How
then could I
gaze with desire at a virgin?
For what portion of God is
there from above? and what inheritance of
the Almighty from on high?
Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
If my step hath turned out of
the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any
blot hath
cleaved to mine hands;
If my steps have turned from
the path, if my heart has followed my eyes, or if impurity has
stuck to my hands,
Then let me
sow, and let another eat;
yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
then may another eat what I have sown, and may my crops be uprooted.
Then let my wife
grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
then may my own wife
grind grain for another, and may other men sleep with her.
For this is an
heinous crime;
yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by
the judges.
For that would be a
heinous crime, an iniquity to be judged.
What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
what will I do when God rises to judge? How will I answer when called to account?
Did not he that made me in
the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in
the womb?
Did not He who made me in
the womb also make
them? Did not
the same One form us in
the womb?
If I have
withheld the poor from
their desire, or have caused
the eyes of
the widow to fail;
If I have denied the desires of the poor or allowed the widow’s eyes to fail,
Or have eaten my
morsel myself alone, and
the fatherless hath not eaten
thereof;
if I have eaten my
morsel alone, not sharing it with
the fatherless—
(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s
womb;)
though from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my mother’s
womb I guided
the widow—
If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with
the fleece of my sheep;
if his heart has not blessed me for warming him with
the fleece of my sheep,
If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless because I saw that I had support in the gate,
Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder
blade, and mine arm be broken from
the bone.
then may my arm fall from my shoulder and be
torn from its
socket.
If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
If I have put my trust in gold or called pure gold my security,
If I
beheld the sun when it
shined, or
the moon walking in brightness;
This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
this would also be an iniquity to be judged, for I would have denied God on high.
If I
rejoiced at
the destruction of him that
hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
if the men of my house have not said, ‘Who is there who has not had his fill?’—
The stranger did not
lodge in
the street: but I opened my doors to
the traveller.
but no stranger had to
lodge on
the street, for my door has been open to
the traveler—
Did I fear a great multitude, or did
the contempt of families
terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of
the door?
because I greatly feared
the crowds and
the contempt of
the clans
terrified me, so that I kept silent and would not go outside—
Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that
the Almighty would answer me, and that mine
adversary had written a book.
I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
I would give account of all my steps; I would approach Him like a prince.)—
If my land cry against me, or that
the furrows likewise
thereof complain;
if my land
cries out against me and its furrows
weep together,
If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
if I have
devoured its produce without payment or broken
the spirit of its tenants,
Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and
cockle instead of barley.
The words of Job are ended.
then let briers grow instead of wheat and
stinkweed instead of barley.” Thus conclude
the words of Job.
So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
Then was
kindled the wrath of
Elihu the son of Barachel
the Buzite, of
the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath
kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
This
kindled the anger of
Elihu son of Barachel
the Buzite, of
the family of Ram. He burned with anger against Job for
justifying himself rather than God,
Also against his three friends was his wrath
kindled, because
they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
and he burned with anger against Job’s three friends because
they had failed to
refute Job, and yet had condemned him.
Now
Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because
they were elder than he.
Now
Elihu had waited to speak to Job because
the others were older than he.
When
Elihu saw that
there was no answer in
the mouth of
these three men,
then his wrath was
kindled.
But when he saw that
the three men had no further reply, his anger was
kindled.
And
Elihu the son of Barachel
the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and
durst not
shew you mine opinion.
So
Elihu son of Barachel
the Buzite declared: “I am young in years, while you are old; that is why I was
timid and afraid to tell you what I know.
But
there is a spirit in man: and
the inspiration of
the Almighty giveth
them understanding.
But
there is a spirit in a man,
the breath of
the Almighty, that gives him understanding.
Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.
It is not only the old who are wise, or the elderly who understand justice.
Therefore I said,
Hearken to me; I also will
shew mine opinion.
Therefore I say, ‘
Listen to me; I too will declare what I know.’
Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold,
there was none of you that
convinced Job, or that answered his words:
I paid you full attention. But no one proved Job wrong; not one of you
rebutted his arguments.
They were
amazed,
they answered no more:
they left off speaking.
Job’s friends are dismayed, with no more to say; words have escaped them.
When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;)
Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand and no longer reply?
For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me.
For I am full of words, and my spirit within me compels me.
Wherefore, Job, I pray
thee, hear my speeches, and
hearken to all my words.
“But now, O Job, hear my speech, and
listen to all my words.
Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.
Behold, I will open my mouth; my address is on
the tip of my tongue.
My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.
My words are from an upright heart, and my lips speak
sincerely what I know.
The Spirit of God hath made me, and
the breath of
the Almighty hath given me life.
The Spirit of God has made me, and
the breath of
the Almighty gives me life.
Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s
stead: I also am formed out of
the clay.
I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay.
Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
Surely no fear of me should
terrify you; nor will my hand be heavy upon you.
Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,
Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard these very words:
I am clean without
transgression, I am innocent; neither is
there iniquity in me.
‘I am pure, without
transgression; I am clean, with no iniquity in me.
He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.
He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches over all my paths.’
Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
Behold, you are not right in this matter. I will answer you, for God is greater than man.
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
In a dream, in a vision in
the night, when deep sleep falls upon men as
they slumber on
their beds,
Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,
He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings
He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.
to preserve his soul from the Pit and his life from perishing by the sword.
He is
chastened also with pain upon his bed, and
the multitude of his bones with strong pain:
A man is also
chastened on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones,
Yea, his soul draweth near unto
the grave, and his life to
the destroyers.
He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the messengers of death.
Yet if
there is a
messenger on his side, one
mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him,
Then he is
gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to
the pit: I have found a
ransom.
to be
gracious to him and say, ‘
Spare him from going down to
the Pit; I have found his
ransom,’
His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth:
then his flesh is refreshed like a child’s; he returns to the days of his youth.
He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have
sinned, and
perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;
Then he sings before men with
these words: ‘I have
sinned and
perverted what was right; yet I did not get what I deserved.
He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.
He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will live to see the light.’
Lo, all
these things worketh God
oftentimes with man,
Behold, all these things God does to a man, two or even three times,
To bring back his soul from
the pit, to be
enlightened with
the light of
the living.
to bring back his soul from
the Pit, that he may be
enlightened with
the light of life.
If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to
justify thee.
But if you have something to say, answer me; speak up, for I would like to
vindicate you.
If not,
hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach
thee wisdom.
But if not,
then listen to me; be quiet, and I will teach you wisdom.”
For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.
For the ear tests words as the mouth tastes food.
Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.
He keeps company with evildoers and walks with wicked men.
Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from
the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.
Therefore listen to me, O men of understanding. Far be it from God to do wrong, and from
the Almighty to act unjustly.
For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
For according to a man’s deeds He repays him; according to a man’s ways He brings consequences.
Indeed, it is true that God does not act wickedly, and
the Almighty does not
pervert justice.
Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world?
Who gave Him charge over the earth? Who appointed Him over the whole world?
All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.
all flesh would perish together and mankind would return to the dust.
If now thou hast understanding, hear this:
hearken to
the voice of my words.
If you have understanding, hear this;
listen to my words.
Could one who hates justice
govern? Will you
condemn the just and mighty One,
How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
who is not partial to princes and does not favor rich over poor? For they are all the work of His hands.
In a moment shall
they die, and
the people shall be troubled at
midnight, and pass away: and
the mighty shall be taken away without hand.
They die in an instant, in
the middle of
the night.
The people
convulse and pass away;
the mighty are removed without human hand.
For his eyes are upon
the ways of man, and he
seeth all his goings.
For His eyes are on the ways of a man, and He sees his every step.
There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide.
He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in
their stead.
He
shatters the mighty without inquiry and sets up others in
their place.
Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed.
Therefore, He recognizes
their deeds; He overthrows
them in
the night and
they are
crushed.
He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others;
He strikes them for their wickedness in full view,
Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways:
because they turned aside from Him and had no regard for any of His ways.
So that
they cause
the cry of
the poor to come unto him, and he heareth
the cry of
the afflicted.
They caused
the cry of
the poor to come before Him, and He heard
the outcry of
the afflicted.
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
But when He remains silent, who can
condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation,
That
the hypocrite reign not, lest
the people be ensnared.
that godless men should not rule or lay snares for the people.
Should it be according to thy mind? he will
recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I:
therefore speak what thou knowest.
Should God repay you on your own terms when you have
disavowed His? You must choose, not I; so tell me what you know.
Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man
hearken unto me.
Men of understanding will declare to me, and the wise men who hear me will say:
My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because of his answers for wicked men.
If only Job were tried to the utmost for answering like a wicked man.
For thou saidst, What advantage will it be unto
thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be
cleansed from my sin?
For you ask, ‘What does it profit me, and what benefit do I gain apart from sin?’
I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee.
I will reply to you and to your friends as well.
Look unto the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.
Look to
the heavens and see;
gaze at
the clouds high above you.
Thy wickedness may
hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit
the son of man.
Your wickedness affects only a man like
yourself, and your righteousness only a son of man.
