And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
They will not look to the altars they have fashioned with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they have made with their fingers.
In that day shall his strong cities be as a
forsaken bough, and an
uppermost branch, which
they left because of
the children of Israel: and
there shall be
desolation.
In that day
their strong cities will be like
forsaken thickets and summits, abandoned to
the Israelites and to utter
desolation.
Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:
For you have forgotten
the God of your salvation and failed to remember
the Rock of your refuge.
Therefore, though you
cultivate delightful plots and set out cuttings from
exotic vines—
In
the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow, and in
the morning shalt thou make thy seed to
flourish: but
the harvest shall be a
heap in
the day of grief and of
desperate sorrow.
though on
the day you plant you make
them grow, and on that morning you help your seed
sprout— yet
the harvest will
vanish on
the day of disease and incurable pain.
Woe to
the multitude of many people, which make a noise like
the noise of
the seas; and to
the rushing of nations, that make a
rushing like
the rushing of mighty waters!
The nations shall
rush like
the rushing of many waters: but God shall
rebuke them, and
they shall
flee far off, and shall be
chased as
the chaff of
the mountains before
the wind, and like a rolling thing before
the whirlwind.
The nations
rage like
the rush of many waters. He rebukes
them, and
they flee far away, driven before
the wind like
chaff on
the hills, like tumbleweeds before a
gale.
And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before
the morning he is not. This is
the portion of
them that
spoil us, and
the lot of
them that
rob us.
In
the evening,
there is sudden terror! Before morning,
they are no more! This is
the portion of those who
loot us and
the lot of those who
plunder us.
Woe to
the land shadowing with wings, which is beyond
the rivers of
Ethiopia:
That sendeth ambassadors by
the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon
the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered and
peeled, to a people terrible from
their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden down, whose land
the rivers have
spoiled!
which sends couriers by sea, in
papyrus vessels on
the waters. Go, swift messengers, to a people tall and smooth-
skinned, to a people widely feared, to a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.
All ye inhabitants of
the world, and dwellers on
the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an
ensign on
the mountains; and when he bloweth a
trumpet, hear ye.
All you people of
the world and dwellers of
the earth, when a
banner is raised on
the mountains, you will see it; when a ram’s horn sounds, you will hear it.
For so
the LORD said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of
dew in
the heat of harvest.
For this is what
the LORD has told me: “I will quietly look on from My dwelling place, like
shimmering heat in
the sunshine, like a cloud of
dew in
the heat of harvest.”
For
afore the harvest, when
the bud is perfect, and
the sour grape is
ripening in
the flower, he shall both cut off
the sprigs with pruninghooks, and take away and cut down
the branches.
For before
the harvest, when
the blossom is gone and
the flower becomes a
ripening grape, He will cut off
the shoots with a
pruning knife and remove and discard
the branches.
They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.
They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey, and to the beasts of the land. The birds will feed on them in summer, and all the wild animals in winter.
In that time shall
the present be brought unto
the LORD of hosts of a people scattered and
peeled, and from a people terrible from
their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out and
trodden under foot, whose land
the rivers have
spoiled, to
the place of
the name of
the LORD of hosts,
the mount
Zion.
At that time gifts will be brought to
the LORD of Hosts— from a people tall and smooth-
skinned, from a people widely feared, from a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers— to Mount
Zion,
the place of
the Name of
the LORD of Hosts.
The burden of Egypt. Behold,
the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and
the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and
the heart of Egypt shall
melt in
the midst of it.
This is
the burden against Egypt: Behold,
the LORD rides on a swift cloud; He is coming to Egypt.
The idols of Egypt will
tremble before Him, and
the hearts of
the Egyptians will
melt within
them.
And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
“So I will
incite Egyptian against Egyptian; brother will fight against brother,
neighbor against
neighbor, city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
Then the spirit of
the Egyptians will be
emptied out from among
them, and I will
frustrate their plans, so that
they will resort to idols and spirits of
the dead, to mediums and spiritists.
And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts.
I will deliver the Egyptians into the hands of harsh masters, and a fierce king will rule over them,” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.
The waters of
the Nile will dry up, and
the riverbed will be
parched and empty.
And
they shall turn
the rivers far away; and
the brooks of defence shall be
emptied and dried up:
the reeds and flags shall wither.
The canals will
stink;
the streams of Egypt will
trickle and dry up;
the reeds and rushes will wither.
The paper reeds by
the brooks, by
the mouth of
the brooks, and every thing sown by
the brooks, shall wither, be driven away, and be no more.
The bulrushes by the Nile, by the mouth of the river, and all the fields sown along the Nile, will wither, blow away, and be no more.
The fishers also shall
mourn, and all
they that cast angle into
the brooks shall
lament, and
they that spread nets upon
the waters shall
languish.
Then the fishermen will
mourn, all who cast a hook into
the Nile will
lament, and those who spread nets on
the waters will pine away.
Moreover
they that work in fine flax, and
they that
weave networks, shall be confounded.
The workers in flax will be dismayed, and the weavers of fine linen will turn pale.
And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.
The workers in cloth will be
dejected, and all
the hired workers will be sick at heart.
Surely
the princes of Zoan are fools,
the counsel of
the wise counsellors of Pharaoh is become
brutish: how say ye unto Pharaoh, I am
the son of
the wise,
the son of ancient kings?
The princes of Zoan are mere fools; Pharaoh’s wise counselors give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the wise, a son of eastern kings”?
Where are they? where are thy wise men? and let them tell thee now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.
Where are your wise men now? Let
them tell you and
reveal what
the LORD of Hosts has
planned against Egypt.
The princes of Zoan are become fools,
the princes of
Noph are
deceived;
they have also
seduced Egypt, even
they that are
the stay of
the tribes
thereof.
The princes of Zoan have become fools;
the princes of
Memphis are
deceived.
The cornerstones of her tribes have led Egypt
astray.
The LORD hath mingled a
perverse spirit in
the midst
thereof: and
they have caused Egypt to
err in every work
thereof, as a
drunken man staggereth in his
vomit.
The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion. Egypt has been led
astray in all she does, as a
drunkard staggers through his own
vomit.
Neither shall
there be any work for Egypt, which
the head or tail, branch or
rush, may do.
There is nothing Egypt can do— head or tail, palm or reed.
In that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of
the shaking of
the hand of
the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it.
In that day
the Egyptians will be like women.
They will
tremble with fear beneath
the uplifted hand of
the LORD of Hosts, when He brandishes it against
them.
And the land of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts, which he hath determined against it.
The land of Judah will bring terror to Egypt; whenever Judah is mentioned, Egypt will
tremble over what
the LORD of Hosts has
planned against it.
In that day shall five cities in
the land of Egypt speak
the language of
Canaan, and
swear to
the LORD of hosts; one shall be called,
The city of destruction.
In that day five cities in
the land of Egypt will speak
the language of
Canaan and
swear allegiance to
the LORD of Hosts. One of
them will be called
the City of
the Sun.
In that day shall
there be an altar to
the LORD in
the midst of
the land of Egypt, and a
pillar at
the border
thereof to
the LORD.
In that day
there will be an altar to
the LORD in
the center of
the land of Egypt, and a
pillar to
the LORD near her border.
And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.
It will be a sign and a witness to
the LORD of Hosts in
the land of Egypt. When
they cry out to
the LORD because of
their oppressors, He will send
them a
savior and defender to
rescue them.
And
the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and
the Egyptians shall know
the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and
oblation;
yea,
they shall
vow a
vow unto
the LORD, and perform it.
The LORD will make Himself known to Egypt, and on that day Egypt will acknowledge
the LORD.
They will worship with sacrifices and offerings;
they will make vows to
the LORD and
fulfill them.
And
the LORD shall
smite Egypt: he shall
smite and
heal it: and
they shall return even to
the LORD, and he shall be intreated of
them, and shall
heal them.
And
the LORD will strike Egypt with a plague; He will strike
them but
heal them.
They will turn to
the LORD, and He will hear
their prayers and
heal them.
In that day shall
there be a
highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and
the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and
the Egyptian into Assyria, and
the Egyptians shall serve with
the Assyrians.
In that day
there will be a
highway from Egypt to Assyria.
The Assyrians will go to Egypt, and
the Egyptians to Assyria.
The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together.
In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:
In that day Israel will join a three-party alliance with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing upon the earth.
Whom
the LORD of hosts shall
bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria
the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.
The LORD of Hosts will
bless them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt My people, Assyria My
handiwork, and Israel My inheritance.”
In
the year that
Tartan came unto
Ashdod, (when
Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,) and fought against
Ashdod, and took it;
Before
the year that
the chief commander, sent by
Sargon king of Assyria, came to
Ashdod and attacked and captured it,
At
the same time spake
the LORD by Isaiah
the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose
the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy
shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and
barefoot.
the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go, remove
the sackcloth from your
waist and
the sandals from your feet.” And Isaiah did so, walking around naked and
barefoot.
And
the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and
barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon
Ethiopia;
Then the LORD said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has gone naked and
barefoot for three years as a sign and
omen against Egypt and
Cush,
So shall
the king of Assyria lead away
the Egyptians prisoners, and
the Ethiopians
captives, young and old, naked and
barefoot, even with
their buttocks uncovered, to
the shame of Egypt.
so
the king of Assyria will lead away
the captives of Egypt and
the exiles of
Cush, young and old alike, naked and
barefoot, with bared buttocks—to Egypt’s shame.
And
they shall be afraid and
ashamed of
Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt
their glory.
Those who made
Cush their hope and Egypt
their boast will be dismayed and
ashamed.
And
the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation,
whither we
flee for help to be delivered from
the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?
And on that day
the dwellers of this coastland will say, ‘See what has happened to our source of hope, those to whom we fled for help and
deliverance from
the king of Assyria! How
then can we escape?’”
The burden of the desert of the sea. As whirlwinds in the south pass through; so it cometh from the desert, from a terrible land.
This is
the burden against
the Desert by
the Sea: Like whirlwinds
sweeping through
the Negev, an
invader comes from
the desert, from a land of terror.
A
dire vision is declared to me: “
The traitor still betrays, and
the destroyer still destroys. Go up, O
Elam! Lay siege, O Media! I will put an end to all her
groaning.”
Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
Therefore my body is filled with
anguish. Pain grips me, like
the pains of a woman in labor. I am
bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see.
Prepare
the table, watch in
the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and
anoint the shield.
They prepare a table,
they lay out a
carpet,
they eat,
they drink! Rise up, O princes, oil
the shields!
For thus hath
the Lord said unto me, Go, set a
watchman, let him declare what he
seeth.
For this is what
the Lord says to me: “Go, post a
lookout and have him report what he sees.
And he
cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon
the watchtower in
the daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:
And, behold, here cometh a
chariot of men, with a couple of
horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all
the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto
the ground.
Look, here come
the riders,
horsemen in pairs.” And one answered, saying: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon! All
the images of her gods lie
shattered on
the ground!”
O my
threshing, and
the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of
the LORD of hosts,
the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.
O my people,
crushed on
the threshing floor, I tell you what I have heard from
the LORD of Hosts,
the God of Israel.
The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of
Seir,
Watchman, what of
the night?
Watchman, what of
the night?
This is
the burden against Dumah: One calls to me from
Seir, “
Watchman, what is left of
the night?
Watchman, what is left of
the night?”
The watchman replies, “Morning has come, but also
the night. If you would inquire,
then inquire. Come back yet again.”
The burden upon Arabia. In
the forest in Arabia shall ye
lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanim.
This is
the burden against Arabia: In
the thickets of Arabia you must
lodge, O caravans of Dedanites.
The inhabitants of
the land of Tema brought water to him that was
thirsty,
they prevented with
their bread him that fled.
Bring water for
the thirsty, O dwellers of Tema; meet
the refugees with food.
For
they fled from
the swords, from
the drawn sword, and from
the bent bow, and from
the grievousness of war.
For
they flee from
the sword—
the sword that is drawn— from
the bow that is bent, and from
the stress of battle.
For thus hath
the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to
the years of an
hireling, and all
the glory of
Kedar shall fail:
For this is what
the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a
hired worker would count it, all
the glory of
Kedar will be gone.
And
the residue of
the number of archers,
the mighty men of
the children of
Kedar, shall be diminished: for
the LORD God of Israel hath spoken it.
The remaining archers,
the warriors of
Kedar, will be few.” For
the LORD,
the God of Israel, has spoken.
The burden of the valley of vision. What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the housetops?
This is the burden against the Valley of Vision: What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the rooftops,
Thou that art full of stirs, a
tumultuous city, a
joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with
the sword, nor dead in battle.
O city of
commotion, O town of
revelry? Your slain did not die by
the sword, nor were
they killed in battle.
All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from far.
All your rulers have fled together, captured without a bow. All your fugitives were captured together, having fled to a distant place.
Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will
weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of
the spoiling of
the daughter of my people.
Therefore I said, “Turn away from me, let me
weep bitterly! Do not try to
console me over
the destruction of
the daughter of my people.”
For it is a day of trouble, and of
treading down, and of
perplexity by
the Lord GOD of hosts in
the valley of vision, breaking down
the walls, and of crying to
the mountains.
For
the Lord GOD of Hosts has set a day of
tumult and
trampling and confusion in
the Valley of Vision— of breaking down
the walls and crying to
the mountains.
And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full of
chariots, and
the horsemen shall set
themselves in
array at
the gate.
Your choicest valleys are full of
chariots, and
horsemen are posted at
the gates.
And he discovered
the covering of Judah, and thou
didst look in that day to
the armour of
the house of
the forest.
He has uncovered the defenses of Judah. On that day you looked to the weapons in the House of the Forest.
Ye have seen also
the breaches of
the city of David, that
they are many: and ye gathered together
the waters of
the lower
pool.
You saw that
there were many breaches in
the walls of
the City of David. You collected water from
the lower
pool.
And ye have numbered
the houses of Jerusalem, and
the houses have ye broken down to
fortify the wall.
You counted
the houses of Jerusalem and
tore them down to
strengthen the wall.
Ye made also a
ditch between
the two walls for
the water of
the old
pool: but ye have not looked unto
the maker
thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.
You built a
reservoir between
the walls for
the waters of
the ancient
pool, but you did not look to
the One who made it, or consider Him who
planned it long ago.
And behold joy and
gladness,
slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to
morrow we shall die.
But look,
there is joy and
gladness,
butchering of cattle and slaughtering of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine: “Let us eat and drink, for
tomorrow we die!”
And it was revealed in mine ears by
the LORD of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be
purged from you till ye die, saith
the Lord GOD of hosts.
The LORD of Hosts has revealed in my hearing: “Until your dying day, this sin of yours will never be
atoned for,” says
the Lord GOD of Hosts.
Thus saith
the Lord GOD of hosts, Go, get
thee unto this
treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over
the house, and say,
This is what
the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “Go, say to Shebna,
the steward in charge of
the palace:
What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast
hewed thee out a
sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a
sepulchre on high, and that graveth an
habitation for himself in a rock?
What are you doing here, and who authorized you to
carve out a tomb for
yourself here—to
chisel your tomb in
the height and cut your resting place in
the rock?
Behold, the LORD will carry thee away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover thee.
Look, O mighty man!
The LORD is about to
shake you violently. He will take hold of you,
He will surely violently turn and
toss thee like a ball into a large country:
there shalt thou die, and
there the chariots of thy glory shall be
the shame of thy lord’s house.
roll you into a ball, and
sling you into a wide land.
There you will die, and
there your glorious
chariots will remain—a disgrace to
the house of your master.
And I will drive thee from thy station, and from thy state shall he pull thee down.
I will remove you from office, and you will be
ousted from your position.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:
On that day I will
summon My servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah.
And I will
clothe him with thy
robe, and
strengthen him with thy
girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to
the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to
the house of Judah.
I will
clothe him with your
robe and
tie your
sash around him. I will put your authority in his hand, and he will be a father to
the dwellers of Jerusalem and to
the house of Judah.
And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
And I will
fasten him as a
nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house.
I will drive him like a
peg into a firm place, and he will be a throne of glory for
the house of his father.
And
they shall
hang upon him all
the glory of his father’s house,
the offspring and
the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from
the vessels of cups, even to all
the vessels of flagons.
So
they will
hang on him all
the glory of his father’s house:
the descendants and
the offshoots—all
the lesser vessels, from
bowls to every kind of
jar.
In that day, saith
the LORD of hosts, shall
the nail that is fastened in
the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and
the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for
the LORD hath spoken it.
In that day, declares
the LORD of Hosts,
the peg driven into a firm place will give way; it will be
sheared off and fall, and
the load upon it will be cut down.” Indeed,
the LORD has spoken.
The burden of Tyre.
Howl, ye ships of
Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that
there is no house, no entering in: from
the land of
Chittim it is revealed to
them.
This is
the burden against Tyre:
Wail, O ships of
Tarshish, for Tyre is laid waste, without house or
harbor. Word has reached
them from
the land of
Cyprus.
Be still, ye inhabitants of
the isle; thou whom
the merchants of Zidon, that pass over
the sea, have
replenished.
Be silent, O dwellers of
the coastland, you merchants of
Sidon, whose traders have crossed
the sea.
And by great waters
the seed of Sihor,
the harvest of
the river, is her revenue; and she is a
mart of nations.
On the great waters came the grain of Shihor; the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre; she was the merchant of the nations.
Be thou
ashamed, O Zidon: for
the sea hath spoken, even
the strength of
the sea, saying, I
travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I
nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins.
Be
ashamed, O
Sidon,
the stronghold of
the sea, for
the sea has spoken: “I have not been in labor or given birth. I have not raised young men or brought up young women.”
As at
the report concerning Egypt, so shall
they be
sorely pained at
the report of Tyre.
When
the report reaches Egypt,
they will
writhe in
agony over
the news of Tyre.
Cross over to
Tarshish;
wail, O inhabitants of
the coastland!
Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth?
Who
planned this against Tyre,
the bestower of crowns, whose traders are princes, whose merchants are
renowned on
the earth?
The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to
stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all
the honourable of
the earth.
The LORD of Hosts
planned it, to
defile all its glorious beauty, to disgrace all
the renowned of
the earth.
Pass through thy land as a river, O daughter of
Tarshish:
there is no more strength.
He stretched out his hand over
the sea, he
shook the kingdoms:
the LORD hath given a commandment against
the merchant city, to destroy
the strong holds
thereof.
The LORD has stretched out His hand over
the sea; He has made kingdoms
tremble. He has given a command that
the strongholds of
Canaan be destroyed.
And he said, Thou shalt no more
rejoice, O thou
oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to
Chittim;
there also shalt thou have no rest.
He said, “You shall
rejoice no more, O
oppressed Virgin Daughter of
Sidon. Get up and cross over to
Cyprus— even
there you will find no rest.”
Behold
the land of
the Chaldeans; this people was not,
til the Assyrian founded it for
them that dwell in
the wilderness:
they set up
the towers
thereof,
they raised up
the palaces
thereof; and he brought it to ruin.
Look at
the land of
the Chaldeans— a people now of no account.
The Assyrians destined it for
the desert creatures;
they set up
their siege towers and
stripped its palaces.
They brought it to ruin.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to
the days of one king: after
the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an
harlot.
At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years—
the span of a king’s life. But at
the end of seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in
the song of
the harlot:
Take an
harp, go about
the city, thou
harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet
melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered.
“Take up your
harp,
stroll through
the city, O forgotten
harlot. Make sweet
melody, sing many a song, so you will be remembered.”
