And it shall come to pass after
the end of seventy years, that
the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her
hire, and shall commit
fornication with all
the kingdoms of
the world upon
the face of
the earth.
And at
the end of seventy years,
the LORD will restore Tyre.
Then she will return to
hire as a
prostitute and sell herself to all
the kingdoms on
the face of
the earth.
Yet her profits and wages will be set apart to the LORD; they will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live before the LORD, for abundant food and fine clothing.
Behold,
the LORD maketh
the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it
upside down, and scattereth abroad
the inhabitants
thereof.
Behold,
the LORD lays waste
the earth and leaves it in ruins. He will twist its surface and
scatter its inhabitants—
And it shall be, as with
the people, so with
the priest; as with
the servant, so with his master; as with
the maid, so with her
mistress; as with
the buyer, so with
the seller; as with
the lender, so with
the borrower; as with
the taker of
usury, so with
the giver of
usury to him.
The land shall be utterly
emptied, and utterly
spoiled: for
the LORD hath spoken this word.
The earth will be utterly laid waste and thoroughly
plundered. For
the LORD has spoken this word.
The earth mourneth and fadeth away,
the world languisheth and fadeth away,
the haughty people of
the earth do
languish.
The earth mourns and
withers;
the world languishes and fades;
the exalted of
the earth waste away.
Therefore hath
the curse devoured the earth, and
they that dwell
therein are
desolate:
therefore the inhabitants of
the earth are burned, and few men left.
Therefore a
curse has consumed
the earth, and its inhabitants must bear
the guilt;
the earth’s dwellers have been burned, and only a few
survive.
The new wine mourneth,
the vine languisheth, all
the merryhearted do
sigh.
The new wine dries up,
the vine
withers. All
the merrymakers now
groan.
The mirth of tabrets ceaseth,
the noise of
them that
rejoice endeth,
the joy of
the harp ceaseth.
The joyful tambourines have ceased;
the noise of revelers has stopped;
the joyful
harp is silent.
They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
They no longer sing and drink wine; strong drink is bitter to those who
consume it.
The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.
There is a crying for wine in
the streets; all joy is
darkened,
the mirth of
the land is gone.
In
the streets
they cry out for wine. All joy turns to
gloom;
rejoicing is exiled from
the land.
The city is left in ruins; its gate is reduced to
rubble.
When thus it shall be in
the midst of
the land among
the people,
there shall be as
the shaking of an olive tree, and as
the gleaning grapes when
the vintage is done.
So will it be on
the earth and among
the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a
gleaning after a
grape harvest.
They shall lift up
their voice,
they shall sing for
the majesty of
the LORD,
they shall cry
aloud from
the sea.
They raise
their voices,
they shout for joy; from
the west
they proclaim the majesty of
the LORD.
Wherefore
glorify ye
the LORD in
the fires, even
the name of
the LORD God of Israel in
the isles of
the sea.
Therefore glorify the LORD in
the east.
Extol the name of
the LORD,
the God of Israel in
the islands of
the sea.
Fear, and
the pit, and
the snare, are upon
thee, O inhabitant of
the earth.
Terror and pit and
snare await you, O dweller of
the earth.
And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from
the noise of
the fear shall fall into
the pit; and he that cometh up out of
the midst of
the pit shall be taken in
the snare: for
the windows from on high are open, and
the foundations of
the earth do
shake.
Whoever flees
the sound of
panic will fall into
the pit, and
whoever climbs from
the pit will be caught in
the snare. For
the windows of heaven are open, and
the foundations of
the earth are
shaken.
The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
The earth is utterly broken apart,
the earth is split open,
the earth is
shaken violently.
The earth shall
reel to and
fro like a
drunkard, and shall be removed like a
cottage; and
the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
The earth
staggers like a
drunkard and sways like a
shack. Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that
the LORD shall
punish the host of
the high ones that are on high, and
the kings of
the earth upon
the earth.
In that day
the LORD will
punish the host of heaven above and
the kings of
the earth below.
And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit.
They will be confined to a
dungeon and punished after many days.
Then the moon shall be confounded, and
the sun
ashamed, when
the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount
Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
The moon will be confounded and
the sun will be
ashamed; for
the LORD of Hosts will reign on Mount
Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders with great glory.
O LORD, thou art my God; I will
exalt thee, I will praise thy name; for thou hast done wonderful things; thy counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.
O LORD, You are my God! I will
exalt You; I will praise Your name. For You have worked wonders— plans formed long ago— in perfect faithfulness.
For thou hast made of a city an
heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.
Indeed, You have made
the city a
heap of
rubble,
the fortified town a ruin.
The fortress of strangers is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt.
Therefore shall
the strong people
glorify thee,
the city of
the terrible nations shall fear
thee.
Therefore, a strong people will honor You.
The cities of
ruthless nations will
revere You.
For thou hast been a strength to
the poor, a strength to
the needy in his distress, a refuge from
the storm, a shadow from
the heat, when
the blast of
the terrible ones is as a storm against
the wall.
For You have been a refuge for
the poor, a
stronghold for
the needy in distress, a refuge from
the storm, a shade from
the heat. For
the breath of
the ruthless is like rain against a wall,
Thou shalt bring down the noise of strangers, as the heat in a dry place; even the heat with the shadow of a cloud: the branch of the terrible ones shall be brought low.
like heat in a dry land. You
subdue the uproar of foreigners. As
the shade of a cloud cools
the heat, so
the song of
the ruthless is silenced.
And in this mountain shall
the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of fat things, a feast of wines on
the lees, of fat things full of
marrow, of wines on
the lees well refined.
On this mountain
the LORD of Hosts will prepare a
banquet for all
the peoples, a feast of aged wine, of choice meat, of finely aged wine.
And he will destroy in this mountain
the face of
the covering cast over all people, and
the vail that is spread over all nations.
On this mountain He will
swallow up
the shroud that enfolds all peoples,
the sheet that covers all nations;
He will
swallow up death in victory; and
the Lord GOD will
wipe away tears from off all faces; and
the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all
the earth: for
the LORD hath spoken it.
He will
swallow up death
forever.
The Lord GOD will
wipe away
the tears from every face and remove
the disgrace of His people from
the whole earth. For
the LORD has spoken.
And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is
the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be
glad and
rejoice in his salvation.
And in that day it will be said, “Surely this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He has saved us. This is
the LORD for whom we have waited. Let us
rejoice and be
glad in His salvation.”
For in this mountain shall
the hand of
the LORD rest, and Moab shall be
trodden down under him, even as straw is
trodden down for
the dunghill.
For
the hand of
the LORD will rest on this mountain. But Moab will be
trampled in his place as straw is
trodden into
the dung pile.
And he shall spread forth his hands in
the midst of
them, as he that swimmeth spreadeth forth his hands to
swim: and he shall bring down
their pride together with
the spoils of
their hands.
He will spread out his hands within it, as a
swimmer spreads his arms to
swim. His pride will be brought low,
despite the skill of his hands.
And the fortress of the high fort of thy walls shall he bring down, lay low, and bring to the ground, even to the dust.
The high-walled fortress will be brought down, cast to the ground, into the dust.
In that day shall this song be sung in
the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God
appoint for walls and bulwarks.
In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.
Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.
Open the gates so a righteous nation may enter— one that remains faithful.
Thou
wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on
thee: because he trusteth in
thee.
You will keep in perfect peace
the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.
Trust ye in
the LORD for ever: for in
the LORD JEHOVAH is
everlasting strength:
Trust in
the LORD
forever, because GOD
the LORD is
the Rock eternal.
For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.
For He has humbled those who dwell on high; He lays the lofty city low. He brings it down to the ground; He casts it into the dust.
The foot shall
tread it down, even
the feet of
the poor, and
the steps of
the needy.
The way of
the just is uprightness: thou, most upright,
dost weigh the path of
the just.
The path of the righteous is level; You clear a straight path for the upright.
Yea, in
the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for
thee;
the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to
the remembrance of
thee.
Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in
the path of Your judgments. Your name and
renown are
the desire of our souls.
With my soul have I desired
thee in
the night;
yea, with my spirit within me will I seek
thee early: for when thy judgments are in
the earth,
the inhabitants of
the world will learn righteousness.
My soul longs for You in
the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at
dawn. For when Your judgments come upon
the earth,
the people of
the world learn righteousness.
Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.
Though grace is shown to the wicked man, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of righteousness he acts unjustly and fails to see the majesty of the LORD.
LORD, when thy hand is lifted up,
they will not see: but
they shall see, and be
ashamed for
their envy at
the people;
yea,
the fire of thine enemies shall
devour them.
O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but
they do not see it.
They will see Your zeal for Your people and be put to shame.
The fire set for Your enemies will
consume them!
O LORD our God, other lords besides thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.
O LORD our God, other lords besides You have had dominion, but Your name alone do we
confess.
They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.
The dead will not live;
the departed spirits will not rise.
Therefore You have punished and destroyed
them; You have
wiped out all memory of
them.
Thou hast increased
the nation, O LORD, thou hast increased
the nation: thou art
glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all
the ends of
the earth.
You have enlarged
the nation, O LORD; You have enlarged
the nation. You have gained glory for
Yourself; You have extended all
the borders of
the land.
LORD, in trouble have
they visited
thee,
they poured out a prayer when thy
chastening was upon
them.
O LORD, they sought You in their distress; when You disciplined them, they poured out a quiet prayer.
Like as a woman with child, that draweth near
the time of her
delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.
As a woman with child about to give birth writhes and
cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD.
We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any
deliverance in
the earth; neither have
the inhabitants of
the world fallen.
We were with child; we
writhed in pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to
the earth, nor brought any life into
the world.
Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall
they arise.
Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy
dew is as
the dew of herbs, and
the earth shall cast out
the dead.
Your dead will live;
their bodies will rise.
Awake and sing, you who dwell in
the dust! For your
dew is like
the dew of
the morning, and
the earth will bring forth her dead.
Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about
thee: hide
thyself as it were for a little moment, until
the indignation be overpast.
Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you. Hide
yourselves a little while until
the wrath has passed.
For, behold,
the LORD cometh out of his place to
punish the inhabitants of
the earth for
their iniquity:
the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
For behold,
the LORD is coming out of His dwelling to
punish the inhabitants of
the earth for
their iniquity.
The earth will
reveal her
bloodshed and will no longer
conceal her slain.
I
the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any
hurt it, I will keep it night and day.
I,
the LORD, am its keeper; I water it continually. I guard it night and day so no one can
disturb it;
Fury is not in me: who would set
the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through
them, I would burn
them together.
I am not
angry. If only thorns and briers
confronted Me, I would march and
trample them, I would burn
them to
the ground.
Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.
Or let
them lay claim to My protection; let
them make peace with Me—
yes, let
them make peace with Me.”
He shall cause
them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall
blossom and
bud, and fill
the face of
the world with fruit.
In
the days to come, Jacob will take root. Israel will
bud and
blossom and fill
the whole world with fruit.
Hath he
smitten him, as he
smote those that
smote him? or is he slain according to
the slaughter of
them that are slain by him?
Has the LORD struck Israel as He struck her oppressors? Was she killed like those who slayed her?
In measure, when it shooteth forth, thou
wilt debate with it: he stayeth his rough wind in
the day of
the east wind.
By warfare and exile You
contended with her and removed her with a fierce wind, as on
the day
the east wind blows.
By this
therefore shall
the iniquity of Jacob be
purged; and this is all
the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all
the stones of
the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in
sunder,
the groves and images shall not stand up.
Therefore Jacob’s guilt will be
atoned for, and
the full fruit of
the removal of his sin will be this: When he makes all
the altar stones like
crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.
Yet
the defenced city shall be
desolate, and
the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness:
there shall
the calf feed, and
there shall he lie down, and
consume the branches
thereof.
For
the fortified city lies deserted— a
homestead abandoned, a wilderness
forsaken.
There the calves graze, and
there they lie down;
they strip its branches bare.
When
the boughs
thereof are
withered,
they shall be broken off:
the women come, and set
them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding:
therefore he that made
them will not have mercy on
them, and he that formed
them will
shew them no favour.
When its limbs are dry,
they are broken off. Women come and use
them for
kindling; for this is a people without understanding.
Therefore their Maker has no
compassion on
them, and
their Creator shows
them no favor.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel.
In that day
the LORD will
thresh from
the flowing Euphrates to
the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered one by one.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that
the great
trumpet shall be
blown, and
they shall come which were ready to perish in
the land of Assyria, and
the outcasts in
the land of Egypt, and shall worship
the LORD in
the holy mount at Jerusalem.
And in that day a great ram’s horn will sound, and those who were perishing in Assyria will come forth with those who were exiles in Egypt. And they will worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
Woe to
the crown of pride, to
the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a
fading flower, which are on
the head of
the fat valleys of
them that are overcome with wine!
Woe to
the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards, to
the fading flower of his glorious
splendor, set on
the summit above
the fertile valley,
the pride of those overcome by wine.
Behold,
the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a
tempest of
hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to
the earth with
the hand.
Behold,
the Lord has one who is strong and mighty. Like a
hailstorm or destructive
tempest, like a driving rain or flooding
downpour, he will
smash that crown to
the ground.
The crown of pride,
the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be
trodden under feet:
And
the glorious beauty, which is on
the head of
the fat valley, shall be a
fading flower, and as
the hasty fruit before
the summer; which when he that looketh upon it
seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
The fading flower of his beautiful
splendor, set on
the summit above
the fertile valley, will be like a ripe fig before
the summer harvest:
Whoever sees it will take it in his hand and
swallow it.
In that day shall
the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a
diadem of beauty, unto
the residue of his people,
On that day
the LORD of Hosts will be a crown of glory, a
diadem of
splendor to
the remnant of His people,
And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.
a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and a strength to those who
repel the onslaught at
the gate.
But
they also have
erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of
the way;
the priest and
the prophet have
erred through strong drink,
they are
swallowed up of wine,
they are out of
the way through strong drink;
they err in vision,
they stumble in judgment.
For all tables are full of
vomit and
filthiness, so that
there is no place clean.
For all
their tables are covered with
vomit;
there is not a place without
filth.
Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine?
them that are
weaned from
the milk, and drawn from
the breasts.
Whom is He trying to teach? To whom is He explaining His message? To infants just
weaned from milk? To
babies removed from
the breast?
For they hear: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there.”
To whom he said, This is
the rest
wherewith ye may cause
the weary to rest; and this is
the refreshing: yet
they would not hear.
to whom He has said: “This is
the place of rest, let
the weary rest; this is
the place of
repose.” But
they would not
listen.
But
the word of
the LORD was unto
them precept upon
precept,
precept upon
precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and
there a little; that
they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and
snared, and taken.
Then the word of
the LORD to
them will become: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little
there,” so that
they will go
stumbling backward and will be injured, ensnared, and captured.
Wherefore hear
the word of
the LORD, ye
scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
Therefore hear the word of the LORD, O scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.
Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with
hell are we at agreement; when
the overflowing
scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under
falsehood have we
hid ourselves:
For you said, “We have made a covenant with death; we have fashioned an agreement with
Sheol. When
the overwhelming scourge passes through it will not touch us, because we have made lies our refuge and
falsehood our hiding place.”
Therefore thus saith
the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in
Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make
haste.
So this is what
the Lord GOD says: “See, I lay a stone in
Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
the one who believes will never be
shaken.
Judgment also will I lay to
the line, and righteousness to
the plummet: and
the hail shall
sweep away
the refuge of lies, and
the waters shall overflow
the hiding place.
I will make justice
the measuring line and righteousness
the level.
Hail will
sweep away your refuge of lies, and water will flood your hiding place.
And your covenant with death shall be
disannulled, and your agreement with
hell shall not stand; when
the overflowing
scourge shall pass through,
then ye shall be
trodden down by it.
Your covenant with death will be dissolved, and your agreement with
Sheol will not stand. When
the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be
trampled by it.
From
the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a
vexation only to understand
the report.
As often as it passes through, it will carry you away; it will
sweep through morning after morning, by day and by night.”
The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.
For
the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and
the covering narrower than that he can
wrap himself in it.
Indeed,
the bed is too short to stretch out on, and
the blanket too small to
wrap around you.
For
the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be
wroth as in
the valley of
Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
For
the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim. He will
rouse Himself as in
the Valley of
Gibeon, to do His work, His strange work, and to perform His task, His
disturbing task.
Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.
So now, do not
mock, or your
shackles will become heavier. Indeed, I have heard from
the Lord GOD of Hosts a decree of destruction against
the whole land.
When he hath made plain
the face
thereof,
doth he not cast abroad
the fitches, and
scatter the cummin, and cast in
the principal wheat and
the appointed barley and
rie in
their place?
When he has leveled its surface, does he not
sow caraway and
scatter cumin? He plants wheat in rows and barley in plots, and
rye within its border.
Grain for bread must be ground, but it is not endlessly
threshed. Though
the wheels of
the cart roll over it,
the horses do not
crush it.
This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
This also comes from the LORD of Hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.
Woe to
Ariel, to
Ariel,
the city where David dwelt! add ye year to year; let
them kill sacrifices.
Woe to you, O
Ariel,
the city of
Ariel where David camped! Year upon year let your festivals
recur.
Yet I will distress
Ariel, and
there shall be
heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as
Ariel.
And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
I will camp in a circle around you; I will
besiege you with towers and set up siege works against you.
And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of
the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of
the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of
the ground, and thy speech shall
whisper out of
the dust.
You will be brought low, you will speak from
the ground, and out of
the dust your words will be
muffled. Your voice will be like a spirit from
the ground; your speech will
whisper out of
the dust.
Moreover
the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and
the multitude of
the terrible ones shall be as
chaff that passeth away:
yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.
But your many foes will be like fine dust,
the multitude of
the ruthless like blowing
chaff.
Then suddenly, in an instant,
