Thus hath
the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold,
the Lord GOD called to
contend by fire, and it
devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.
This is what
the Lord GOD showed me:
The Lord GOD was calling for judgment by fire. It consumed
the great deep and
devoured the land.
Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I
beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
Then I said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob
survive, since he is so small?”
The LORD
repented for this: This also shall not be, saith
the Lord GOD.
So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD.
Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
This is what He showed me: Behold,
the Lord was standing by a wall true to
plumb, with a
plumb line in His hand.
And
the LORD said unto me,
Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline.
Then said
the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in
the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by
them any more:
“
Amos, what do you see?” asked
the LORD. “A
plumb line,” I replied. “Behold,” said
the Lord, “I am setting a
plumb line among My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them:
And
the high places of Isaac shall be
desolate, and
the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against
the house of
Jeroboam with
the sword.
The high places of Isaac will be deserted, and
the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise up against
the house of
Jeroboam with My sword.”
Then Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,
Amos hath
conspired against
thee in
the midst of
the house of Israel:
the land is not able to bear all his words.
Then Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent word to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “
Amos has
conspired against you in
the midst of
the house of Israel.
The land cannot bear all his words,
For thus
Amos saith,
Jeroboam shall die by
the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away
captive out of
their own land.
for this is what
Amos has said: ‘
Jeroboam will die by
the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from
their homeland.’”
But
prophesy not again any more at
Bethel: for it is
the king’s chapel, and it is
the king’s court.
But never
prophesy at
Bethel again, because it is
the sanctuary of
the king and
the temple of
the kingdom.”
Then answered
Amos, and said to
Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an
herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:
“I was not a prophet,”
Amos replied, “nor was I
the son of a prophet; rather, I was a
herdsman and a tender of
sycamore-fig trees.
And
the LORD took me as I followed
the flock, and
the LORD said unto me, Go,
prophesy unto my people Israel.
But
the LORD took me from following
the flock and said to me, ‘Go,
prophesy to My people Israel.’
Now
therefore hear thou
the word of
the LORD: Thou sayest,
Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against
the house of Isaac.
Now,
therefore, hear
the word of
the LORD. You say: ‘Do not
prophesy against Israel; do not
preach against
the house of Isaac.’
Therefore thus saith
the LORD; Thy wife shall be an
harlot in
the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by
the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a
polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
Therefore this is what
the LORD says: ‘Your wife will become a
prostitute in
the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by
the sword. Your land will be divided by a measuring line, and you
yourself will die on pagan soil. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from
their homeland.’”
Thus hath
the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and behold a
basket of summer fruit.
This is what
the Lord GOD showed me: I saw a
basket of summer fruit.
And he said,
Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A
basket of summer fruit.
Then said
the LORD unto me,
The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by
them any more.
“
Amos, what do you see?” He asked. “A
basket of summer fruit,” I replied. So
the LORD said to me, “
The end has come for My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them.”
And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.
“In that day,” declares
the Lord GOD, “
the songs of
the temple will turn to
wailing. Many will be
the corpses,
strewn in silence everywhere!”
Hear this, O ye that
swallow up
the needy, even to make
the poor of
the land to fail,
Hear this, you who
trample the needy, who do away with
the poor of
the land,
Saying, When will
the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and
the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making
the ephah small, and
the shekel great, and
falsifying the balances by
deceit?
asking, “When will
the New Moon be over, that we may sell grain? When will
the Sabbath end, that we may market wheat? Let us reduce
the ephah and increase
the shekel; let us
cheat with
dishonest scales.
That we may
buy the poor for silver, and
the needy for a pair of
shoes;
yea, and sell
the refuse of
the wheat?
Let us
buy the poor with silver and
the needy for a pair of
sandals, selling even
the chaff with
the wheat!”
The LORD has
sworn by
the Pride of Jacob: “I will never
forget any of
their deeds.
Shall not
the land
tremble for this, and every one
mourn that dwelleth
therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and
drowned, as by
the flood of Egypt.
Will not
the land
quake for this, and all its dwellers
mourn? All of it will swell like
the Nile; it will
surge and
then subside like
the Nile in Egypt.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith
the Lord GOD, that I will cause
the sun to go down at
noon, and I will
darken the earth in
the clear day:
And in that day, declares
the Lord GOD, I will make
the sun go down at
noon, and I will
darken the earth in
the daytime.
And I will turn your feasts into
mourning, and all your songs into
lamentation; and I will bring up
sackcloth upon all loins, and
baldness upon every head; and I will make it as
the mourning of an only son, and
the end
thereof as a bitter day.
Behold,
the days come, saith
the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in
the land, not a famine of bread, nor a
thirst for water, but of hearing
the words of
the LORD:
Behold,
the days are coming, declares
the Lord GOD, when I will send a famine on
the land— not a famine of bread or a
thirst for water, but a famine of hearing
the words of
the LORD.
And
they shall
wander from sea to sea, and from
the north even to
the east,
they shall run to and
fro to seek
the word of
the LORD, and shall not find it.
People will
stagger from sea to sea and
roam from north to east, seeking
the word of
the LORD, but
they will not find it.
In that day shall
the fair virgins and young men
faint for
thirst.
In that day
the lovely young women—
the young men as well— will
faint from
thirst.
They that
swear by
the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O
Dan, liveth; and,
The manner of Beer-
sheba liveth; even
they shall fall, and never rise up again.
Those who
swear by
the guilt of Samaria and say, ‘As surely as your god lives, O
Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as
the way of
Beersheba lives’—
they will fall, never to rise again.”
I saw
the LORD standing upon
the altar: and he said,
Smite the lintel of
the door, that
the posts may
shake: and cut
them in
the head, all of
them; and I will
slay the last of
them with
the sword: he that fleeth of
them shall not
flee away, and he that escapeth of
them shall not be delivered.
I saw
the Lord standing beside
the altar, and He said: “Strike
the tops of
the pillars so that
the thresholds
shake.
Topple them on
the heads of all
the people, and I will kill
the rest with
the sword. None of those who
flee will get away; none of
the fugitives will escape.
Though
they dig into
hell,
thence shall mine hand take
them; though
they climb up to heaven,
thence will I bring
them down:
Though
they dig down to
Sheol, from
there My hand will take
them; and though
they climb up to heaven, from
there I will pull
them down.
And though
they hide
themselves in
the top of
Carmel, I will search and take
them out
thence; and though
they be
hid from my sight in
the bottom of
the sea,
thence will I command
the serpent, and he shall
bite them:
Though
they hide
themselves atop Carmel,
there I will
track them and seize
them; and though
they hide from Me at
the bottom of
the sea,
there I will command
the serpent to
bite them.
And though
they go into captivity before
their enemies,
thence will I command
the sword, and it shall
slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon
them for evil, and not for good.
Though
they are driven by
their enemies into captivity,
there I will command
the sword to
slay them. I will fix My eyes upon
them for
harm and not for good.”
And
the Lord GOD of hosts is he that toucheth
the land, and it shall
melt, and all that dwell
therein shall
mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be
drowned, as by
the flood of Egypt.
The Lord GOD of Hosts, He who touches
the earth and it melts, and all its dwellers
mourn— all
the land rises like
the Nile,
then sinks like
the river of Egypt—
It is he that buildeth his stories in
the heaven, and hath founded his
troop in
the earth; he that calleth for
the waters of
the sea, and poureth
them out upon
the face of
the earth:
The LORD is his name.
He builds His upper rooms in
the heavens and founds His
vault upon
the earth. He
summons the waters of
the sea and pours
them over
the face of
the earth.
The LORD is His name.
Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
“Are you not like the Cushites to Me, O children of Israel?” declares the LORD. “Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir?
Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” declares the LORD.
For, lo, I will command, and I will
sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is
sifted in a
sieve, yet shall not
the least grain fall upon
the earth.
“For surely I will give
the command, and I will
shake the house of Israel among all
the nations as grain is
sifted in a
sieve; but not a
pebble will reach
the ground.
All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.
All
the sinners among My people will die by
the sword— all those who say, ‘
Disaster will never draw near or
confront us.’”
In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
“In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David. I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old,
That
they may possess
the remnant of
Edom, and of all
the heathen, which are called by my name, saith
the LORD that doeth this.
that
they may possess
the remnant of
Edom and all
the nations that bear My name,” declares
the LORD, who will do this.
Behold,
the days come, saith
the LORD, that
the plowman shall overtake
the reaper, and
the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and
the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all
the hills shall
melt.
“Behold,
the days are coming,” declares
the LORD, “when
the plowman will overtake
the reaper and
the treader of grapes,
the sower of seed.
The mountains will
drip with sweet wine, with which all
the hills will flow.
And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
I will restore My people Israel from captivity; they will rebuild and inhabit the ruined cities. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.
I will firmly plant them in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land that I have given them,” says the LORD your God.
The vision of
Obadiah. Thus saith
the Lord GOD concerning
Edom; We have heard a rumour from
the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among
the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
This is
the vision of
Obadiah: This is what
the Lord GOD says about
Edom— We have heard a message from
the LORD; an
envoy has been sent among
the nations to say, “Rise up, and let us go to battle against her!”—
Behold, I have made
thee small among
the heathen: thou art greatly
despised.
“Behold, I will make you small among
the nations; you will be deeply
despised.
The pride of thine heart hath
deceived thee, thou that dwellest in
the clefts of
the rock, whose
habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to
the ground?
The pride of your heart has
deceived you, O dwellers in
the clefts of
the rocks whose
habitation is
the heights, who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to
the ground?’
Though thou
exalt thyself as
the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among
the stars,
thence will I bring
thee down, saith
the LORD.
Though you
soar like
the eagle and make your nest among
the stars, even from
there I will bring you down,” declares
the LORD.
If
thieves came to
thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would
they not have
stolen till
they had enough? if
the grapegatherers came to
thee, would
they not leave some grapes?
“If
thieves came to you, if robbers by night— oh, how you will be ruined— would
they not
steal only what
they wanted? If
grape gatherers came to you, would
they not leave some gleanings?
How are
the things of
Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!
But how
Esau will be
pillaged, his hidden treasures sought out!
All
the men of thy
confederacy have brought
thee even to
the border:
the men that were at peace with
thee have
deceived thee, and prevailed against
thee;
they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under
thee:
there is none understanding in him.
All
the men allied with you will drive you to
the border;
the men at peace with you will
deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a
trap for you without your awareness of it.
Shall I not in that day, saith
the LORD, even destroy
the wise men out of
Edom, and understanding out of
the mount of
Esau?
In that day, declares
the LORD, will I not destroy
the wise men of
Edom and
the men of understanding in
the mountains of
Esau?
And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to
the end that every one of
the mount of
Esau may be cut off by slaughter.
Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be
terrified, so that
everyone in
the mountains of
Esau will be cut down in
the slaughter.
For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
Because of
the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame and cut off
forever.
In
the day that thou stoodest on
the other side, in
the day that
the strangers carried away
captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou
wast as one of
them.
On
the day you stood
aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of
them.
But thou shouldest not have looked on
the day of thy brother in
the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have
rejoiced over
the children of Judah in
the day of
their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in
the day of distress.
But you should not
gloat in that day, your brother’s day of misfortune, nor
rejoice over
the people of Judah in
the day of
their destruction, nor
boast proudly in
the day of
their distress.
Thou shouldest not have entered into
the gate of my people in
the day of
their calamity;
yea, thou shouldest not have looked on
their affliction in
the day of
their calamity, nor have laid hands on
their substance in
the day of
their calamity;
Neither shouldest thou have stood in
the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in
the day of distress.
Nor should you stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, nor deliver up their survivors in the day of their distress.
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
For
the Day of
the LORD is near for all
the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your
recompense will return upon your own head.
For as ye have
drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all
the heathen drink continually,
yea,
they shall drink, and
they shall
swallow down, and
they shall be as though
they had not been.
For as you
drank on My holy mountain, so all
the nations will drink continually.
They will drink and
gulp it down;
they will be as if
they had never existed.
But upon mount
Zion shall be
deliverance, and
there shall be
holiness; and
the house of Jacob shall possess
their possessions.
But on Mount
Zion there will be
deliverance, and it will be holy, and
the house of Jacob will reclaim
their possession.
And
the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and
the house of Joseph a flame, and
the house of
Esau for
stubble, and
they shall
kindle in
them, and
devour them; and
there shall not be any remaining of
the house of
Esau; for
the LORD hath spoken it.
Then the house of Jacob will be a
blazing fire, and
the house of Joseph a burning flame; but
the house of
Esau will be
stubble— Jacob will set it
ablaze and
consume it.
Therefore no
survivor will remain from
the house of
Esau.” For
the LORD has spoken.
And
they of
the south shall possess
the mount of
Esau; and
they of
the plain
the Philistines: and
they shall possess
the fields of Ephraim, and
the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess
Gilead.
Those from
the Negev will possess
the mountains of
Esau; those from
the foothills will possess
the land of
the Philistines.
They will occupy
the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess
Gilead.
And
the captivity of this host of
the children of Israel shall possess that of
the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and
the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess
the cities of
the south.
And
the exiles of this host of
the Israelites will possess
the land of
the Canaanites as far as Zarephath; and
the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess
the cities of
the Negev.
And saviours shall come up on mount
Zion to judge
the mount of
Esau; and
the kingdom shall be
the LORD’S.
The deliverers will
ascend Mount
Zion to rule over
the mountains of
Esau. And
the kingdom will belong to
the LORD.
Now
the word of
the LORD came unto
Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
Now
the word of
the LORD came to
Jonah son of Amittai, saying,
Arise, go to
Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for
their wickedness is come up before me.
“Get up! Go to
the great city of
Nineveh and
preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”
But
Jonah rose up to
flee unto
Tarshish from
the presence of
the LORD, and went down to
Joppa; and he found a ship going to
Tarshish: so he paid
the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with
them unto
Tarshish from
the presence of
the LORD.
But
the LORD sent out a great wind into
the sea, and
there was a mighty
tempest in
the sea, so that
the ship was like to be broken.
Then the LORD
hurled a great wind upon
the sea, and such a violent storm arose that
the ship was in danger of breaking apart.
Then the mariners were afraid, and
cried every man unto his god, and cast forth
the wares that were in
the ship into
the sea, to
lighten it of
them. But
Jonah was gone down into
the sides of
the ship; and he lay, and was fast
asleep.
The sailors were afraid, and each
cried out to his own god. And
they threw
the ship’s
cargo into
the sea to
lighten the load. But
Jonah had gone down to
the lowest part of
the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
So
the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
And
they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So
they cast lots, and
the lot fell upon
Jonah.
“Come!” said
the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this
calamity that is upon us.” So
they cast lots, and
the lot fell on
Jonah.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,”
they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
“I am a Hebrew,” replied
Jonah. “I worship
the LORD,
the God of
the heavens, who made
the sea and
the dry land.”
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?”
The men knew that he was
fleeing from
the presence of
the LORD, because he had told
them.
Then said
they unto him, What shall we do unto
thee, that
the sea may be calm unto us? for
the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous.
Now
the sea was growing worse and worse, so
they said to
Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
And he said unto
them, Take me up, and cast me forth into
the sea; so shall
the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great
tempest is upon you.
“
Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into
the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to
blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”
Nevertheless
the men rowed hard to bring it to
the land; but
they could not: for
the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous against
them.
Nevertheless,
the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but
they could not, for
the sea was
raging against
them more and more.
Wherefore
they cried unto
the LORD, and said, We
beseech thee, O LORD, we
beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased
thee.
So
they cried out to
the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
So
they took up
Jonah, and cast him forth into
the sea: and
the sea ceased from her
raging.
At this,
they picked up
Jonah and cast him into
the sea, and
the raging sea grew calm.
Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.
Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him.
Now
the LORD had prepared a great fish to
swallow up
Jonah. And
Jonah was in
the belly of
the fish three days and three nights.
Now
the LORD had appointed a great fish to
swallow Jonah, and
Jonah spent three days and three nights in
the belly of
the fish.
Then Jonah prayed unto
the LORD his God out of
the fish’s
belly,
From inside
the fish,
Jonah prayed to
the LORD his God,
saying: “In my distress I called to
the LORD, and He answered me. From
the belly of
Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
For You cast me into
the deep, into
the heart of
the seas, and
the current
swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’
The waters compassed me about, even to
the soul:
the depth closed me round about,
the weeds were
wrapped about my head.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
To
the roots of
the mountains I descended;
the earth beneath me
barred me in
forever! But You raised my life from
the pit, O LORD my God!
When my soul
fainted within me I remembered
the LORD: and my prayer came in unto
thee, into thine holy temple.
As my life was
fading away, I remembered
the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
Those who
cling to worthless idols
forsake His loving devotion.
But I will sacrifice unto
thee with
the voice of
thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have
vowed. Salvation is of
the LORD.
But I, with
the voice of
thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will
fulfill what I have
vowed. Salvation is from
the LORD!”
And
the LORD spake unto
the fish, and it
vomited out
Jonah upon
the dry land.
And
the word of
the LORD came unto
Jonah the second time, saying,
Then the word of
the LORD came to
Jonah a second time:
Arise, go unto
Nineveh, that great city, and
preach unto it
the preaching that I
bid thee.
“Get up! Go to
the great city of
Nineveh and
proclaim to it
the message that I give you.”
So
Jonah arose, and went unto
Nineveh, according to
the word of
the LORD. Now
Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.
This time
Jonah got up and went to
Nineveh, in accordance with
the word of
the LORD. Now
Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, requiring a three-day journey.
And
Jonah began to enter into
the city a day’s journey, and he
cried, and said, Yet forty days, and
Nineveh shall be overthrown.
On
the first day of his journey,
Jonah set out into
the city and proclaimed, “Forty more days and
Nineveh will be overturned!”
So
the people of
Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on
sackcloth, from
the greatest of
them even to
the least of
them.
And
the Ninevites believed God.
They proclaimed a fast and dressed in
sackcloth, from
the greatest of
them to
the least.
For word came unto
the king of
Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his
robe from him, and covered him with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
When word reached
the king of
Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal
robe, covered himself with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through
Nineveh by
the decree of
the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast,
herd nor flock, taste any thing: let
them not feed, nor drink water:
Then he issued a
proclamation in
Nineveh: “By
the decree of
the king and his nobles: Let no man or beast,
herd or flock, taste anything at all.
They must not eat or drink.
But let man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and cry
mightily unto God:
yea, let
them turn every one from his evil way, and from
the violence that is in
their hands.
Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and have
everyone call out earnestly to God. Let each one turn from his evil ways and from
the violence in his hands.
And God saw
their works, that
they turned from
their evil way; and God
repented of
the evil, that he had said that he would do unto
them; and he did it not.
When God saw
their actions—that
they had turned from
their evil ways—He relented from
the disaster He had threatened to bring upon
them.
