Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness,
the LORD shall be a light unto me.
Do not
gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will arise; though I sit in darkness,
the LORD will be my light.
I will bear
the indignation of
the LORD, because I have
sinned against him, until he
plead my cause, and
execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to
the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.
Because I have
sinned against Him, I must
endure the rage of
the LORD, until He argues my case and executes justice for me. He will bring me into
the light; I will see His righteousness.
Then she that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her which said unto me, Where is
the LORD thy God? mine eyes shall behold her: now shall she be
trodden down as
the mire of
the streets.
Then my enemy will see and will be covered with shame— she who said to me, “Where is
the LORD your God?” My eyes will see her; at that time she will be
trampled like mud in
the streets.
In the day that thy walls are to be built, in that day shall the decree be far removed.
The day for rebuilding your walls will come— the day for extending your boundary.
In that day also he shall come even to thee from Assyria, and from the fortified cities, and from the fortress even to the river, and from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.
On that day they will come to you from Assyria and the cities of Egypt, even from Egypt to the Euphrates, from sea to sea and mountain to mountain.
Notwithstanding
the land shall be
desolate because of
them that dwell
therein, for
the fruit of
their doings.
Then the earth will become
desolate because of its inhabitants, as
the fruit of
their deeds.
Shepherd with Your staff Your people,
the flock of Your inheritance.
They live alone in a
woodland, surrounded by pastures. Let
them graze in
Bashan and
Gilead, as in
the days of old.
According to
the days of thy coming out of
the land of Egypt will I
shew unto him marvellous things.
As in the days when you came out of Egypt, I will show My wonders.
The nations shall see and be confounded at all
their might:
they shall lay
their hand upon
their mouth,
their ears shall be
deaf.
Nations will see and be
ashamed, deprived of all
their might.
They will put
their hands over
their mouths, and
their ears will become
deaf.
They shall
lick the dust like a serpent,
they shall move out of
their holes like worms of
the earth:
they shall be afraid of
the LORD our God, and shall fear because of
thee.
They will
lick the dust like a
snake, like reptiles slithering on
the ground.
They will
crawl from
their holes in
the presence of
the LORD our God;
they will
tremble in fear of You.
Who is a God like unto
thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by
the transgression of
the remnant of his
heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over
the transgression of
the remnant of His inheritance— who does not retain His anger
forever, because He delights in loving devotion?
Thou
wilt perform
the truth to Jacob, and
the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast
sworn unto our fathers from
the days of old.
You will show faithfulness to Jacob and loving devotion to Abraham, as You
swore to our fathers from
the days of old.
The burden of
Nineveh.
The book of
the vision of
Nahum the Elkoshite.
This is
the burden against
Nineveh,
the book of
the vision of
Nahum the Elkoshite:
The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all
acquit the wicked:
the LORD hath his way in
the whirlwind and in
the storm, and
the clouds are
the dust of his feet.
The LORD is slow to anger and great in power;
the LORD will by no means leave
the guilty unpunished. His path is in
the whirlwind and storm, and clouds are
the dust beneath His feet.
He rebuketh
the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all
the rivers:
Bashan languisheth, and
Carmel, and
the flower of
Lebanon languisheth.
He rebukes
the sea and dries it up; He makes all
the rivers run dry.
Bashan and
Carmel wither, and
the flower of
Lebanon wilts.
The mountains
quake at him, and
the hills
melt, and
the earth is burned at his presence,
yea,
the world, and all that dwell
therein.
The mountains
quake before Him, and
the hills
melt away;
the earth trembles at His presence—
the world and all its dwellers.
Who can stand before his
indignation? and who can
abide in
the fierceness of his anger? his
fury is poured out like fire, and
the rocks are thrown down by him.
The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
The LORD is good, a
stronghold in
the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.
But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
But with an
overwhelming flood He will make an end of
Nineveh and pursue His enemies into darkness.
What do ye imagine against
the LORD? he will make an utter end:
affliction shall not rise up
the second time.
Whatever you plot against
the LORD, He will bring to an end.
Affliction will not rise up a second time.
For while
they be folden together as thorns, and while
they are
drunken as drunkards,
they shall be
devoured as
stubble fully dry.
There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.
Thus saith
the LORD: Though
they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall
they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have
afflicted thee, I will
afflict thee no more.
This is what
the LORD says: “Though
they are allied and numerous, yet
they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have
afflicted you, O Judah, I will
afflict you no longer.
For now will I break his yoke from off
thee, and will
burst thy bonds in
sunder.
For I will now break
their yoke from your neck and
tear away your
shackles.”
And
the LORD hath given a commandment concerning
thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of
the house of thy gods will I cut off
the graven image and
the molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art
vile.
The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O
Nineveh: “
There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off
the carved image and cast
idol from
the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”
Behold upon
the mountains
the feet of him that bringeth good
tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for
the wicked shall no more pass through
thee; he is utterly cut off.
Look to
the mountains—
the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace!
Celebrate your feasts, O Judah;
fulfill your vows. For
the wicked will never again march through you;
they will be utterly cut off.
He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep
the munition, watch
the way, make thy loins strong,
fortify thy power
mightily.
For
the LORD will restore
the splendor of Jacob like
the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid
them waste and ruined
the branches of
their vine.
The shield of his mighty men is made red,
the valiant men are in scarlet:
the chariots shall be with flaming torches in
the day of his preparation, and
the fir trees shall be
terribly shaken.
The shields of his mighty men are red;
the valiant warriors are dressed in scarlet.
The fittings of
the chariots flash like fire on
the day
they are prepared, and
the spears of
cypress have been
brandished.
The chariots shall
rage in
the streets,
they shall
justle one against another in
the broad ways:
they shall seem like torches,
they shall run like
the lightnings.
He shall recount his
worthies:
they shall
stumble in
their walk;
they shall make
haste to
the wall
thereof, and
the defence shall be prepared.
He
summons his nobles;
they stumble as
they advance.
They race to its wall;
the protective shield is set in place.
The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.
The river gates are thrown open and the palace collapses.
And Huzzab shall be led away
captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with
the voice of doves, tabering upon
their breasts.
It is decreed that
the city be exiled and carried away; her maidservants
moan like doves, and beat upon
their breasts.
But
Nineveh is of old like a
pool of water: yet
they shall
flee away. Stand, stand, shall
they cry; but none shall look back.
Nineveh has been like a
pool of water throughout her days, but now it is
draining away. “Stop! Stop!”
they cry, but no one turns back.
Take ye
the spoil of silver, take
the spoil of gold: for
there is none end of
the store and glory out of all
the pleasant furniture.
“
Plunder the silver!
Plunder the gold!”
There is no end to
the treasure, an abundance of every precious thing.
She is empty, and void, and waste: and
the heart melteth, and
the knees
smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and
the faces of
them all gather blackness.
Where is
the dwelling of
the lions, and
the feeding place of
the young lions, where
the lion, even
the old lion, walked, and
the lion’s
whelp, and none made
them afraid?
Where is
the lions’
lair or
the feeding ground of
the young lions, where
the lion and
lioness prowled with
their cubs, with nothing to
frighten them away?
The lion did
tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and
strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with
ravin.
Behold, I am against
thee, saith
the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her
chariots in
the smoke, and
the sword shall
devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from
the earth, and
the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
“Behold, I am against you,” declares
the LORD of Hosts. “I will send your
chariots up in smoke, and
the sword will
devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from
the earth, and
the voices of your messengers will no longer be heard.”
Woe to
the bloody city! it is all full of lies and
robbery;
the prey departeth not;
Woe to
the city of blood, full of lies, full of
plunder, never without prey.
The horseman lifteth up both
the bright sword and
the glittering spear: and
there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and
there is none end of
their corpses;
they stumble upon
their corpses:
Because of
the multitude of
the whoredoms of
the wellfavoured
harlot,
the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.
Behold, I am against
thee, saith
the LORD of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will
shew the nations thy nakedness, and
the kingdoms thy shame.
“Behold, I am against you,” declares the LORD of Hosts. “I will lift your skirts over your face. I will show your nakedness to the nations and your shame to the kingdoms.
And it shall come to pass, that all
they that look upon
thee shall
flee from
thee, and say,
Nineveh is laid waste: who will
bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for
thee?
Art thou better than
populous No, that was
situate among
the rivers, that had
the waters round about it, whose
rampart was
the sea, and her wall was from
the sea?
Are you better than
Thebes, stationed by
the Nile with water around her, whose
rampart was
the sea, whose wall was
the water?
Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were
dashed in pieces at
the top of all
the streets: and
they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.
Yet she became an exile; she went into captivity. Her infants were
dashed to pieces at
the head of every street.
They cast lots for her
dignitaries, and all her nobles were bound in chains.
Thou also shalt be
drunken: thou shalt be
hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of
the enemy.
You too will become
drunk; you will go into hiding and seek refuge from
the enemy.
All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with
the firstripe figs: if
they be
shaken,
they shall even fall into
the mouth of
the eater.
All your fortresses are fig trees with
the first ripe figs; when
shaken,
they fall into
the mouth of
the eater!
Behold, thy people in
the midst of
thee are women:
the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies:
the fire shall
devour thy bars.
Look at your troops— they are like your women! The gates of your land are wide open to your enemies; fire consumes their bars.
Draw your water for
the siege;
strengthen your fortresses. Work
the clay and
tread the mortar; repair
the brick
kiln!
Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above
the stars of heaven:
the cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away.
You have multiplied your merchants more than
the stars of
the sky.
The young
locust strips
the land and
flies away.
Thy crowned are as
the locusts, and thy captains as
the great grasshoppers, which camp in
the hedges in
the cold day, but when
the sun ariseth
they flee away, and
their place is not known where
they are.
Your guards are like
the swarming locust, and your
scribes like clouds of locusts that settle on
the walls on a cold day. When
the sun rises,
they fly away, and no one knows where.
Thy
shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in
the dust: thy people is scattered upon
the mountains, and no man gathereth
them.
O king of Assyria, your
shepherds slumber; your officers sleep. Your people are scattered on
the mountains with no one to gather
them.
There is no
healing of thy
bruise; thy wound is
grievous: all that hear
the bruit of
thee shall
clap the hands over
thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?
There is no
healing for your injury; your wound is severe. All who hear
the news of you
applaud your
downfall, for who has not experienced your constant cruelty?
The burden which
Habakkuk the prophet did see.
This is
the burden that
Habakkuk the prophet received in a vision:
O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou
wilt not hear! even cry out unto
thee of violence, and thou
wilt not save!
How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save?
Therefore the law is
slacked, and judgment
doth never go forth: for
the wicked
doth compass about
the righteous;
therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.
Therefore the law is
paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For
the wicked
hem in
the righteous, so that justice is
perverted.
Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.
“Look at
the nations and observe— be utterly
astounded! For I am doing a work in your days that you would never believe even if someone told you.
For, lo, I raise up
the Chaldeans, that bitter and
hasty nation, which shall march through
the breadth of
the land, to possess
the dwellingplaces that are not
theirs.
For behold, I am raising up
the Chaldeans— that
ruthless and
impetuous nation which marches through
the breadth of
the earth to seize dwellings not
their own.
They are terrible and
dreadful:
their judgment and
their dignity shall proceed of
themselves.
They are
dreaded and feared; from
themselves they derive justice and sovereignty.
Their horses also are swifter than
the leopards, and are more fierce than
the evening
wolves: and
their horsemen shall spread
themselves, and
their horsemen shall come from far;
they shall fly as
the eagle that hasteth to eat.
They shall come all for violence:
their faces shall
sup up as
the east wind, and
they shall gather
the captivity as
the sand.
All of them come bent on violence; their hordes advance like the east wind; they gather prisoners like sand.
And
they shall
scoff at
the kings, and
the princes shall be a
scorn unto
them:
they shall
deride every strong hold; for
they shall
heap dust, and take it.
They scoff at kings and make rulers an object of
scorn.
They laugh at every fortress and build up siege ramps to seize it.
Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and
offend, imputing this his power unto his god.
Then they sweep by like
the wind and pass on through.
They are guilty;
their own strength is
their god.”
Art thou not from
everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained
them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established
them for correction.
Are You not from
everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. O LORD, You have appointed
them to
execute judgment; O Rock, You have established
them for correction.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon
them that deal
treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when
the wicked devoureth
the man that is more righteous than he?
Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot
tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You
tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while
the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than
themselves?
And makest men as
the fishes of
the sea, as
the creeping things, that have no ruler over
them?
You have made men like
the fish of
the sea, like
creeping things that have no ruler.
They take up all of
them with
the angle,
they catch
them in
their net, and gather
them in
their drag:
therefore they rejoice and are
glad.
The foe pulls all of
them up with a hook; he catches
them in his
dragnet, and gathers
them in his fishing net; so he rejoices
gladly.
Therefore they sacrifice unto
their net, and burn incense unto
their drag; because by
them their portion is fat, and
their meat
plenteous.
Therefore he sacrifices to his
dragnet and burns incense to his fishing net, for by
these things his portion is
sumptuous and his food is rich.
Shall
they therefore empty
their net, and not
spare continually to
slay the nations?
Will he,
therefore, empty his net and continue to
slay nations without mercy?
I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
I will stand at my guard post and station myself on the ramparts. I will watch to see what He will say to me, and how I should answer when corrected.
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision and clearly
inscribe it on tablets, so that a
herald may run with it.
For
the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at
the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it
tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not
tarry.
For the vision awaits an appointed time; it testifies of the end and does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not delay.
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
Look at the proud one; his soul is not upright— but the righteous will live by faith—
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as
hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
and wealth indeed betrays him. He is an
arrogant man never at rest. He enlarges his
appetite like
Sheol, and like Death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all
the nations to himself and collects all
the peoples as his own.
Shall not all
these take up a parable against him, and a
taunting proverb against him, and say,
Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
Will not all of
these take up a
taunt against him, speaking with
mockery and
derision: ‘
Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’
Shall
they not rise up suddenly that shall
bite thee, and
awake that shall
vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto
them?
Will not your creditors suddenly arise and those who
disturb you
awaken?
Then you will become
their prey.
Because thou hast
spoiled many nations, all
the remnant of
the people shall
spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for
the violence of
the land, of
the city, and of all that dwell
therein.
Because you have
plundered many nations,
the remnant of
the people will
plunder you— because of your
bloodshed against man and your violence against
the land,
the city, and all
their dwellers.
Woe to him that coveteth an evil
covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from
the power of evil!
Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high and escape
the hand of
disaster!
For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.
For
the stones will cry out from
the wall, and
the rafters will
echo it from
the woodwork.
Behold, is it not of
the LORD of hosts that
the people shall labour in
the very fire, and
the people shall
weary themselves for very vanity?
Is it not indeed from
the LORD of Hosts that
the labor of
the people only feeds
the fire, and
the nations
weary themselves in vain?
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy
bottle to him, and makest him
drunken also, that thou mayest look on
their nakedness!
Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from
the wineskin until
they are
drunk, in order to
gaze at
their nakedness!
Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy
foreskin be uncovered:
the cup of
the LORD’S right hand shall be turned unto
thee, and shameful
spewing shall be on thy glory.
You will be filled with shame instead of glory. You too must drink and
expose your
uncircumcision!
The cup in
the LORD’s right hand will come around to you, and utter disgrace will cover your glory.
For
the violence of
Lebanon shall cover
thee, and
the spoil of beasts, which made
them afraid, because of men’s blood, and for
the violence of
the land, of
the city, and of all that dwell
therein.
For your violence against
Lebanon will
overwhelm you, and
the destruction of animals will
terrify you, because of your
bloodshed against men and your violence against
the land,
the city, and all
their dwellers.
What profiteth
the graven image that
the maker
thereof hath
graven it;
the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that
the maker of his work trusteth
therein, to make
dumb idols?
What use is an
idol, that a
craftsman should
carve it— or an image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that cannot speak.
Woe unto him that saith to
the wood,
Awake; to
the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and
there is no breath at all in
the midst of it.
Woe to him who says to wood, ‘
Awake!’ or to silent stone, ‘Arise!’ Can it give guidance? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, yet
there is no breath in it at all.”
But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.
But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him.
A prayer of
Habakkuk the prophet upon Shigionoth.
This is a prayer of
Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth:
O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.
O LORD, I have heard
the report of You; I stand in
awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive
them in
these years; make
them known in
these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy!
God came from Teman, and
the Holy One from mount
Paran.
Selah. His glory covered
the heavens, and
the earth was full of his praise.
God came from Teman, and
the Holy One from Mount
Paran.
Selah His glory covered
the heavens, and His praise filled
the earth.
And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power.
Before him went
the pestilence, and burning coals went forth at his feet.
Plague went before Him, and fever followed in His steps.
He stood, and measured
the earth: he
beheld, and drove
asunder the nations; and
the everlasting mountains were scattered,
the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are
everlasting.
