The LORD hath been
sore displeased with your fathers.
“
The LORD was very
angry with your fathers.
Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.
So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Return to Me, declares the LORD of Hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of Hosts.’
Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom
the former prophets have
cried, saying, Thus saith
the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but
they did not hear, nor
hearken unto me, saith
the LORD.
Do not be like your fathers, to whom
the former prophets proclaimed that this is what
the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Turn now from your evil ways and deeds.’ But
they did not
listen or pay attention to Me, declares
the LORD.
Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?
Where are your fathers now? And
the prophets, do
they live
forever?
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants
the prophets, overtake your fathers?
They repented and said, ‘Just as
the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.’”
Upon
the four and
twentieth day of
the eleventh month, which is
the month
Sebat, in
the second year of
Darius, came
the word of
the LORD unto
Zechariah,
the son of Berechiah,
the son of
Iddo the prophet, saying,
On
the twenty-fourth day of
the eleventh month,
the month of Shebat, in
the second year of
Darius,
the word of
the LORD came to
the prophet
Zechariah son of Berechiah,
the son of
Iddo.
I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among
the myrtle trees that were in
the bottom; and behind him were
there red horses,
speckled, and white.
I looked out into
the night and saw a man riding on a red horse. He was standing among
the myrtle trees in
the hollow, and behind him were red,
sorrel, and white horses.
Then said I, O my lord, what are
these? And
the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will
shew thee what
these be.
“What are these, my lord?” I asked. And the angel who was speaking with me replied, “I will show you what they are.”
And
the man that stood among
the myrtle trees answered and said,
These are
they whom
the LORD hath sent to walk to and
fro through
the earth.
Then the man standing among
the myrtle trees explained, “
They are
the ones
the LORD has sent to
patrol the earth.”
And
they answered
the angel of
the LORD that stood among
the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and
fro through
the earth, and, behold, all
the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
And
the riders answered
the angel of
the LORD who was standing among
the myrtle trees, “We have
patrolled the earth, and behold, all
the earth is at rest and
tranquil.”
Then the angel of
the LORD answered and said, O LORD of hosts, how long
wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on
the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had
indignation these threescore and ten years?
Then the angel of
the LORD said, “How long, O LORD of Hosts, will You
withhold mercy from Jerusalem and
the cities of Judah, with which You have been
angry these seventy years?”
And the LORD answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.
So the LORD spoke kind and comforting words to the angel who was speaking with me.
So
the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith
the LORD of hosts; I am
jealous for Jerusalem and for
Zion with a great jealousy.
Then the angel who was speaking with me said, “
Proclaim this word: This is what
the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I am very
jealous for Jerusalem and
Zion,
And I am very
sore displeased with
the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and
they helped forward
the affliction.
but I am fiercely
angry with
the nations that are at ease. For I was a little
angry, but
they have added to
the calamity.’
Therefore thus saith
the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with
mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith
the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘I will return to Jerusalem with mercy, and there My house will be rebuilt, declares the LORD of Hosts, and a measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem.’
Cry yet, saying, Thus saith
the LORD of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and
the LORD shall yet comfort
Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.
Proclaim further that this is what
the LORD of Hosts says: ‘My cities will again overflow with prosperity;
the LORD will again comfort
Zion and choose Jerusalem.’”
Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.
Then I looked up and saw four horns.
And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these?” And he told me, “These are the horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”
And the LORD shewed me four carpenters.
Then said I, What come
these to do? And he spake, saying,
These are
the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but
these are come to
fray them, to cast out
the horns of
the Gentiles, which lifted up
their horn over
the land of Judah to
scatter it.
“What are
these coming to do?” I asked. And He replied, “
These are
the horns that scattered Judah so that no one could raise his head; but
the craftsmen have come to
terrify them and throw down
these horns of
the nations that have lifted up
their horns against
the land of Judah to
scatter it.”
I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand.
Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a man with a measuring line in his hand.
Then said I,
Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is
the breadth
thereof, and what is
the length
thereof.
“Where are you going?” I asked. “To measure Jerusalem,” he replied, “and to determine its width and length.”
And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him,
Then the angel who was speaking with me went out, and another angel came out to meet him
And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein:
and said to him, “Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of
the multitude of men and
livestock within it.
For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.
For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD, and I will be the glory within it.’”
Ho, ho, come forth, and
flee from
the land of
the north, saith
the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as
the four winds of
the heaven, saith
the LORD.
“Get up! Get up!
Flee from
the land of
the north,” declares
the LORD, “for I have scattered you like
the four winds of heaven,” declares
the LORD.
Deliver
thyself, O
Zion, that dwellest with
the daughter of Babylon.
“Get up, O
Zion! Escape, you who dwell with
the Daughter of Babylon!”
For thus saith
the LORD of hosts; After
the glory hath he sent me unto
the nations which
spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth
the apple of his eye.
For this is what
the LORD of Hosts says: “After His Glory has sent Me against
the nations that have
plundered you—for
whoever touches you touches
the apple of His eye—
For, behold, I will
shake mine hand upon
them, and
they shall be a
spoil to
their servants: and ye shall know that
the LORD of hosts hath sent me.
I will surely wave My hand over
them, so that
they will become
plunder for
their own servants.
Then you will know that
the LORD of Hosts has sent Me.”
Sing and
rejoice, O daughter of
Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in
the midst of
thee, saith
the LORD.
“
Shout for joy and be
glad, O Daughter of
Zion, for I am coming to dwell among you,” declares
the LORD.
And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee.
“On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD, and they will become My people. I will dwell among you, and you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you.
And
the LORD shall
inherit Judah his portion in
the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.
And the LORD will take possession of Judah as His portion in the Holy Land, and He will once again choose Jerusalem.
Be silent, O all flesh, before
the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy
habitation.
Be silent before
the LORD, all people, for He has
roused Himself from His holy dwelling.”
And he shewed me Joshua
the high priest standing before
the angel of
the LORD, and
Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
Then the angel showed me Joshua
the high priest standing before
the angel of
the LORD, with
Satan standing at his right hand to
accuse him.
And
the LORD said to
Satan: “
The LORD rebukes you,
Satan! Indeed,
the LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebukes you! Is not this man a
firebrand snatched from
the fire?”
Now Joshua was clothed with
filthy garments, and stood before
the angel.
Now Joshua was dressed in
filthy garments as he stood before
the angel.
And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away
the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from
thee, and I will
clothe thee with change of
raiment.
So
the angel said to those standing before him, “Take off his
filthy clothes!”
Then he said to Joshua, “See, I have removed your iniquity, and I will
clothe you with splendid robes.”
And I said, Let
them set a fair
mitre upon his head. So
they set a fair
mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And
the angel of
the LORD stood by.
Then I said, “Let
them put a clean
turban on his head.” So a clean
turban was placed on his head, and
they clothed him, as
the angel of
the LORD stood by.
And
the angel of
the LORD
protested unto Joshua, saying,
Then the angel of the LORD gave this charge to Joshua:
Thus saith
the LORD of hosts; If thou
wilt walk in my ways, and if thou
wilt keep my charge,
then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give
thee places to walk among
these that stand by.
“This is what
the LORD of Hosts says: ‘If you walk in My ways and keep My instructions,
then you will
govern My house and will also have charge of My courts; and I will give you a place among
these who are standing here.
Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.
Hear now, O high priest Joshua, you and your companions seated before you, who are indeed a sign. For behold, I am going to bring My servant, the Branch.
For behold
the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will
engrave the graving
thereof, saith
the LORD of hosts, and I will remove
the iniquity of that land in one day.
See
the stone I have set before Joshua; on that one stone are seven eyes. Behold, I will
engrave on it an inscription, declares
the LORD of Hosts, and I will remove
the iniquity of this land in a single day.
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.
On that day, declares
the LORD of Hosts, you will each
invite your
neighbor to sit under your own vine and fig tree.’”
And
the angel that talked with me came again, and
waked me, as a man that is
wakened out of his sleep,
Then the angel who was speaking with me returned and
woke me, as a man is
awakened from his sleep.
And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a
candlestick all of gold, with a
bowl upon
the top of it, and his seven lamps
thereon, and seven pipes to
the seven lamps, which are upon
the top
thereof:
“What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,” I replied, “with a
bowl at
the top and seven lamps on it, with seven spouts to
the lamps.
And two olive trees by it, one upon
the right side of
the bowl, and
the other upon
the left side
thereof.
There are also two olive trees beside it, one on
the right side of
the bowl and
the other on its left.”
So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?
“What are these, my lord?” I asked the angel who was speaking with me.
Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what they are?” replied the angel. “No, my lord,” I answered.
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is
the word of
the LORD unto
Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith
the LORD of hosts.
So he said to me, “This is
the word of
the LORD to
Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says
the LORD of Hosts.
Who art thou, O great mountain? before
Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth
the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.
What are you, O great mountain? Before
Zerubbabel you will become a plain.
Then he will bring forth
the capstone accompanied by shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’”
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
The hands of
Zerubbabel have laid
the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that
the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.
“
The hands of
Zerubbabel have laid
the foundation of this house, and his hands will complete it.
Then you will know that
the LORD of Hosts has sent me to you.
For who hath
despised the day of small things? for
they shall
rejoice, and shall see
the plummet in
the hand of
Zerubbabel with those seven;
they are
the eyes of
the LORD, which run to and
fro through
the whole earth.
For who has
despised the day of small things? But
these seven eyes of
the LORD, which
scan the whole earth, will
rejoice when
they see
the plumb line in
the hand of
Zerubbabel.”
Then answered I, and said unto him, What are
these two olive trees upon
the right side of
the candlestick and upon
the left side
thereof?
Then I asked the angel, “What are the two olive trees on the right and left of the lampstand?”
And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?
And I questioned him further, “What are the two olive branches beside the two gold pipes from which the golden oil pours?”
And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
“Do you not know what these are?” he inquired. “No, my lord,” I replied.
Then said he,
These are
the two
anointed ones, that stand by
the LORD of
the whole earth.
So he said, “
These are
the two
anointed ones who are standing beside
the Lord of all
the earth.”
Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.
Again I lifted up my eyes and saw before me a flying
scroll.
And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
“What do you see?” asked
the angel. “I see a flying
scroll,” I replied, “twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.”
Then said he unto me, This is
the curse that goeth forth over
the face of
the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.
Then he told me, “This is
the curse that is going out over
the face of all
the land, for according to one side of
the scroll, every
thief will be removed; and according to
the other side, every
perjurer will be removed.
I will bring it forth, saith
the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into
the house of
the thief, and into
the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in
the midst of his house, and shall
consume it with
the timber
thereof and
the stones
thereof.
I will send it out, declares
the LORD of Hosts, and it will enter
the house of
the thief and
the house of him who swears falsely by My name. It will remain inside his house and destroy it, down to its timbers and stones.”
Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.
Then the angel who was speaking with me came forward and told me, “Now lift up your eyes and see what is approaching.”
And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an
ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is
their resemblance through all
the earth.
“What is it?” I asked. And he replied, “A measuring
basket is going forth.”
Then he continued, “This is
their iniquity in all
the land.”
And, behold,
there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in
the midst of
the ephah.
And behold,
the cover of lead was raised, and
there was a woman sitting inside
the basket.
And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into
the midst of
the ephah; and he cast
the weight of lead upon
the mouth
thereof.
“This is Wickedness,” he said. And he
shoved her down into
the basket,
pushing down
the lead cover over its opening.
Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold,
there came out two women, and
the wind was in
their wings; for
they had wings like
the wings of a
stork: and
they lifted up
the ephah between
the earth and
the heaven.
Then I lifted up my eyes and saw two women approaching, with
the wind in
their wings.
Their wings were like those of a
stork, and
they lifted up
the basket between heaven and earth.
Then said I to
the angel that talked with me,
Whither do
these bear
the ephah?
“Where are
they taking
the basket?” I asked
the angel who was speaking with me.
And he said unto me, To build it an house in
the land of
Shinar: and it shall be established, and set
there upon her own base.
“To build a house for it in
the land of
Shinar,” he told me. “And when it is ready,
the basket will be set
there on its
pedestal.”
And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold,
there came four
chariots out from between two mountains; and
the mountains were mountains of brass.
And again I lifted up my eyes and saw four
chariots coming out from between two mountains—mountains of bronze.
In
the first
chariot were red horses; and in
the second
chariot black horses;
The first
chariot had red horses,
the second black horses,
the third white horses, and
the fourth
dappled horses—all of
them strong.
Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?
So I inquired of the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these, my lord?”
And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.
And the angel told me, “These are the four spirits of heaven, going forth from their station before the Lord of all the earth.
The black horses which are
therein go forth into
the north country; and
the white go forth after
them; and
the grisled go forth toward
the south country.
The one with
the black horses is going toward
the land of
the north,
the one with
the white horses toward
the west, and
the one with
the dappled horses toward
the south.”
And
the bay went forth, and sought to go that
they might walk to and
fro through
the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and
fro through
the earth. So
they walked to and
fro through
the earth.
As
the strong horses went out,
they were eager to go and
patrol the earth; and
the LORD said, “Go and
patrol the earth.” So
they patrolled the earth.
Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold,
these that go toward
the north country have quieted my spirit in
the north country.
Then the LORD summoned me and said, “Behold, those going to the land of the north have given rest to My Spirit in the land of the north.”
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
The word of the LORD also came to me, saying,
Take of
them of
the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah, which are come from Babylon, and come thou
the same day, and go into
the house of
Josiah the son of
Zephaniah;
“Take an offering from
the exiles—from Heldai, Tobijah, and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon—and go that same day to
the house of
Josiah son of
Zephaniah.
Then take silver and gold, and make crowns, and set them upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;
Take silver and gold, make an
ornate crown, and set it on
the head of
the high priest, Joshua son of Jehozadak.
And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD:
And you are to tell him that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Here is a man whose name is the Branch, and He will branch out from His place and build the temple of the LORD.
Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.
Yes, He will build
the temple of
the LORD; He will be clothed in
splendor and will sit on His throne and rule. And He will be a priest on His throne, and
there will be peaceful counsel between
the two.’
And
the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to
Hen the son of
Zephaniah, for a
memorial in
the temple of
the LORD.
And
they that are far off shall come and build in
the temple of
the LORD, and ye shall know that
the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will
diligently obey
the voice of
the LORD your God.
Even those far away will come and build
the temple of
the LORD, and you will know that
the LORD of Hosts has sent Me to you. This will happen if you
diligently obey
the voice of
the LORD your God.”
And it came to pass in
the fourth year of king
Darius, that
the word of
the LORD came unto
Zechariah in
the fourth day of
the ninth month, even in
Chisleu;
In
the fourth year of King
Darius,
the word of
the LORD came to
Zechariah on
the fourth day of
the ninth month,
the month of Chislev.
When they had sent unto the house of God Sherezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to pray before the LORD,
Now
the people of
Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-melech, along with
their men, to
plead before
the LORD
And to speak unto
the priests which were in
the house of
the LORD of hosts, and to
the prophets, saying, Should I
weep in
the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done
these so many years?
by asking
the priests of
the house of
the LORD of Hosts, as well as
the prophets, “Should I
weep and fast in
the fifth month, as I have done
these many years?”
Then came the word of the LORD of hosts unto me, saying,
Then the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying,
Speak unto all
the people of
the land, and to
the priests, saying, When ye fasted and
mourned in
the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?
“Ask all
the people of
the land and
the priests, ‘When you fasted and
mourned in
the fifth and seventh months for
these seventy years, was it really for Me that you fasted?
Should ye not hear
the words which
the LORD hath
cried by
the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and
the cities
thereof round about her, when men inhabited
the south and
the plain?
Are
these not
the words that
the LORD proclaimed through
the earlier prophets, when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were
populous and prosperous, and
the Negev and
the foothills were inhabited?’”
And
the word of
the LORD came unto
Zechariah, saying,
Then the word of
the LORD came to
Zechariah, saying,
Thus speaketh
the LORD of hosts, saying,
Execute true judgment, and
shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother:
“This is what
the LORD of Hosts says: ‘
Administer true justice. Show loving devotion and
compassion to one another.
And
oppress not
the widow, nor
the fatherless,
the stranger, nor
the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.
Do not
oppress the widow or
the fatherless,
the foreigner or
the poor. And do not plot evil in your hearts against one another.’
But
they refused to
hearken, and pulled away
the shoulder, and stopped
their ears, that
they should not hear.
But
they refused to pay attention and turned a
stubborn shoulder;
they stopped up
their ears from hearing.
Yea,
they made
their hearts as an
adamant stone, lest
they should hear
the law, and
the words which
the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by
the former prophets:
therefore came a great wrath from
the LORD of hosts.
They made
their hearts like flint and would not
listen to
the law or to
the words that
the LORD of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through
the earlier prophets.
Therefore great anger came from
the LORD of Hosts.
Therefore it is come to pass, that as he
cried, and
they would not hear; so
they cried, and I would not hear, saith
the LORD of hosts:
And just as I had called and
they would not
listen, so when
they called I would not
listen, says
the LORD of Hosts.
But I scattered
them with a
whirlwind among all
the nations whom
they knew not. Thus
the land was
desolate after
them, that no man passed through nor returned: for
they laid
the pleasant land
desolate.
But I scattered
them with a
whirlwind among all
the nations that
they had not known, and
the land was left
desolate behind
them so that no one could come or go. Thus
they turned
the pleasant land into a
desolation.”
Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying,
Again the word of the LORD of Hosts came to me, saying:
Thus saith
the LORD of hosts; I was
jealous for
Zion with great jealousy, and I was
jealous for her with great
fury.
Thus saith
the LORD; I am returned unto
Zion, and will dwell in
the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and
the mountain of
the LORD of hosts
the holy mountain.
This is what
the LORD says: “I will return to
Zion and dwell in Jerusalem.
Then Jerusalem will be called
the City of Truth, and
the mountain of
the LORD of Hosts will be called
the Holy Mountain.”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Old men and old women will again sit along the streets of Jerusalem, each with a staff in hand because of great age.
