Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
If ye
forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods,
then he will turn and do you
hurt, and
consume you, after that he hath done you good.
If you
forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring
disaster on you and
consume you, even after He has been good to you.”
And
the people said unto Joshua,
Nay; but we will serve
the LORD.
“No!” replied the people. “We will serve the LORD!”
And Joshua said unto
the people, Ye are witnesses against
yourselves that ye have chosen you
the LORD, to serve him. And
they said, We are witnesses.
Then Joshua told
them, “You are witnesses against
yourselves that you have chosen to serve
the LORD.” “We are witnesses!”
they said.
Now
therefore put away, said he,
the strange gods which are among you, and
incline your heart unto
the LORD God of Israel.
“Now,
therefore,” he said, “get rid of
the foreign gods among you and
incline your hearts to
the LORD,
the God of Israel.”
And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.
So the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey His voice.”
So Joshua made a covenant with
the people that day, and set
them a statute and an
ordinance in
Shechem.
On that day Joshua made a covenant for
the people, and
there at
Shechem he established for
them a statute and
ordinance.
And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.
Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was near the sanctuary of the LORD.
And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
And Joshua said to all the people, “You see this stone. It will be a witness against us, for it has heard all the words the LORD has spoken to us, and it will be a witness against you if you ever deny your God.”
So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.
And it came to pass after
these things, that Joshua
the son of
Nun,
the servant of
the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
Some time later, Joshua son of
Nun,
the servant of
the LORD, died at
the age of 110.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.
Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And
the bones of Joseph, which
the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried
they in
Shechem, in a
parcel of ground which Jacob bought of
the sons of Hamor
the father of
Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became
the inheritance of
the children of Joseph.
And
the bones of Joseph, which
the Israelites had brought up out of Egypt, were buried at
Shechem in
the plot of land that Jacob had purchased from
the sons of Hamor,
Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver. So it became an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants.
And
Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and
they buried him in a hill that
pertained to
Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.
Eleazar son of Aaron also died, and
they buried him at Gibeah, which had been given to his son
Phinehas in
the hill country of Ephraim.
Now after
the death of Joshua it came to pass, that
the children of Israel asked
the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against
the Canaanites first, to fight against
them?
After
the death of Joshua,
the Israelites inquired of
the LORD, “Who will be
the first to go up and fight for us against
the Canaanites?”
And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
“Judah shall go up,” answered the LORD. “Indeed, I have delivered the land into their hands.”
And Judah said unto
Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against
the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with
thee into thy lot. So
Simeon went with him.
Then the men of Judah said to
their brothers
the Simeonites, “Come up with us to our
allotted territory, and let us fight against
the Canaanites. And we likewise will go with you to your territory.” So
the Simeonites went with
them.
And Judah went up; and
the LORD delivered
the Canaanites and
the Perizzites into
their hand: and
they slew of
them in Bezek ten thousand men.
When Judah attacked,
the LORD delivered
the Canaanites and
Perizzites into
their hands, and
they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
And
there they found Adoni-bezek and fought against him, striking down
the Canaanites and
Perizzites.
But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
As Adoni-bezek fled,
they pursued him, seized him, and cut off his thumbs and
big toes.
And Adoni-bezek said,
Threescore and ten kings, having
their thumbs and
their great toes cut off, gathered
their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And
they brought him to Jerusalem, and
there he died.
Then Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with
their thumbs and
big toes cut off have gathered
the scraps under my table. As I have done to
them, so God has repaid me.” And
they brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.
Now
the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and
smitten it with
the edge of
the sword, and set
the city on fire.
Then the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
And afterward
the children of Judah went down to fight against
the Canaanites, that dwelt in
the mountain, and in
the south, and in
the valley.
Afterward,
the men of Judah marched down to fight against
the Canaanites living in
the hill country, in
the Negev, and in
the foothills.
And Judah went against
the Canaanites that dwelt in
Hebron: (now
the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and
they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Judah also marched against
the Canaanites who were living in
Hebron (formerly known as Kiriath-arba), and
they struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:
From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
And
Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
And
Caleb said, “To
the man who strikes down Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage.”
And Othniel
the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
So Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz captured
the city, and
Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And
Caleb gave her
the upper springs and
the nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in
the Negev, give me springs of water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both
the upper and lower springs.
And
the children of
the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of
the city of palm trees with
the children of Judah into
the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in
the south of
Arad; and
they went and dwelt among
the people.
Now
the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law,
the Kenite, went up with
the men of Judah from
the City of Palms to
the Wilderness of Judah in
the Negev near
Arad.
They went to live among
the people.
And Judah went with
Simeon his brother, and
they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And
the name of
the city was called Hormah.
Then the men of Judah went with
their brothers
the Simeonites, attacked
the Canaanites living in Zephath, and devoted
the city to destruction. So it was called Hormah.
Also Judah took
Gaza with
the coast
thereof, and
Askelon with
the coast
thereof, and
Ekron with
the coast
thereof.
And Judah also captured
Gaza, Ashkelon, and
Ekron—each with its territory.
And
the LORD was with Judah; and he
drave out
the inhabitants of
the mountain; but could not drive out
the inhabitants of
the valley, because
they had
chariots of iron.
The LORD was with Judah, and
they took possession of
the hill country; but
they could not drive out
the inhabitants of
the plains because
they had
chariots of iron.
And
they gave
Hebron unto
Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled
thence the three sons of
Anak.
Just as Moses had promised, Judah gave
Hebron to
Caleb, who drove out
the descendants of
the three sons of
Anak.
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
The Benjamites, however, failed to drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day the Jebusites live there among the Benjamites.
And
the house of Joseph,
they also went up against
Bethel: and
the LORD was with
them.
The house of Joseph also attacked
Bethel, and
the LORD was with
them.
And
the house of Joseph sent to
descry Bethel. (Now
the name of
the city before was
Luz.)
And
the spies saw a man come forth out of
the city, and
they said unto him,
Shew us, we pray
thee,
the entrance into
the city, and we will
shew thee mercy.
and when
the spies saw a man coming out of
the city,
they said to him, “Please show us how to get into
the city, and we will treat you kindly.”
And when he shewed
them the entrance into
the city,
they smote the city with
the edge of
the sword; but
they let go
the man and all his family.
So the man showed them the entrance to the city, and they put the city to the sword but released that man and all his family.
And
the man went into
the land of
the Hittites, and built a city, and called
the name
thereof Luz: which is
the name
thereof unto this day.
And
the man went to
the land of
the Hittites, built a city, and called it
Luz, which is its name to this day.
Neither did
Manasseh drive out
the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor
the inhabitants of
Dor and her towns, nor
the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor
the inhabitants of
Megiddo and her towns: but
the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
At that time
Manasseh failed to drive out
the inhabitants of Beth-shean, Taanach,
Dor, Ibleam,
Megiddo, and
their villages; for
the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that
they put
the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive
them out.
When Israel became stronger,
they pressed
the Canaanites into forced labor, but
they never drove
them out completely.
Neither did
Zebulun drive out
the inhabitants of Kitron, nor
the inhabitants of Nahalol; but
the Canaanites dwelt among
them, and became tributaries.
Zebulun failed to drive out
the inhabitants of Kitron and Nahalol; so
the Canaanites lived among
them and served as forced laborers.
Neither did Asher drive out
the inhabitants of
Accho, nor
the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of
Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
Asher failed to drive out
the inhabitants of Acco,
Sidon, Ahlab,
Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, and Rehob.
But
the Asherites dwelt among
the Canaanites,
the inhabitants of
the land: for
they did not drive
them out.
So
the Asherites lived among
the Canaanite inhabitants of
the land, because
they did not drive
them out.
Neither did
Naphtali drive out
the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor
the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among
the Canaanites,
the inhabitants of
the land: nevertheless
the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries unto
them.
Naphtali failed to drive out
the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath. So
the Naphtalites also lived among
the Canaanite inhabitants of
the land, but
the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath served
them as forced laborers.
And
the Amorites forced
the children of
Dan into
the mountain: for
they would not suffer
them to come down to
the valley:
The Amorites forced
the Danites into
the hill country and did not allow
them to come down into
the plain.
But
the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in
Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet
the hand of
the house of Joseph prevailed, so that
they became tributaries.
And
the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres,
Aijalon, and Shaalbim. But when
the house of Joseph grew in strength,
they pressed
the Amorites into forced labor.
And
the coast of
the Amorites was from
the going up to Akrabbim, from
the rock, and upward.
And
the border of
the Amorites extended from
the Ascent of Akrabbim to Sela and beyond.
And an angel of
the LORD came up from
Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto
the land which I
sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
Now
the angel of
the LORD went up from
Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into
the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you,
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this?
and you are not to make a covenant with
the people of this land, but you shall
tear down
their altars.’ Yet you have not obeyed My voice. What is this you have done?
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive
them out from before you; but
they shall be as thorns in your sides, and
their gods shall be a
snare unto you.
So now I tell you that I will not drive out
these people before you;
they will be thorns in your sides, and
their gods will be a
snare to you.”
And it came to pass, when
the angel of
the LORD spake
these words unto all
the children of Israel, that
the people lifted up
their voice, and
wept.
When
the angel of
the LORD had spoken
these words to all
the Israelites,
the people lifted up
their voices and
wept.
And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.
So they called that place Bochim and offered sacrifices there to the LORD.
And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
After Joshua had dismissed the people, the Israelites went out to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.
And the people served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had seen all the great works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And Joshua
the son of
Nun,
the servant of
the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
And Joshua son of
Nun,
the servant of
the LORD, died at
the age of 110.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
They buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers, another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel.
And
the children of Israel did evil in
the sight of
the LORD, and served
Baalim:
And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals.
And
they forsook the LORD God of
their fathers, which brought
them out of
the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of
the gods of
the people that were round about
them, and bowed
themselves unto
them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus
they forsook the LORD,
the God of
their fathers, who had brought
them out of
the land of Egypt, and
they followed after various gods of
the peoples around
them.
They bowed down to
them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
for
they forsook Him and served
Baal and
the Ashtoreths.
And
the anger of
the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered
them into
the hands of spoilers that
spoiled them, and he sold
them into
the hands of
their enemies round about, so that
they could not any longer stand before
their enemies.
Then the anger of
the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered
them into
the hands of those who
plundered them. He sold
them into
the hands of
their enemies all around, whom
they were no longer able to resist.
Whithersoever they went out,
the hand of
the LORD was against
them for evil, as
the LORD had said, and as
the LORD had
sworn unto
them: and
they were greatly distressed.
Wherever Israel marched out,
the hand of
the LORD was against
them to bring
calamity, just as He had
sworn to
them. So
they were greatly distressed.
Nevertheless
the LORD raised up judges, which delivered
them out of
the hand of those that
spoiled them.
Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved
them from
the hands of those who
plundered them.
And yet
they would not
hearken unto
their judges, but
they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed
themselves unto
them:
they turned quickly out of
the way which
their fathers walked in, obeying
the commandments of
the LORD; but
they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to
their judges. Instead,
they prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to
them.
They quickly turned from
the way of
their fathers, who had walked in obedience to
the LORD’s commandments;
they did not do as
their fathers had done.
And when
the LORD raised
them up judges,
then the LORD was with
the judge, and delivered
them out of
the hand of
their enemies all
the days of
the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of
their groanings by reason of
them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever
the LORD raised up a judge for
the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved
them from
the hands of
their enemies while
the judge was still alive; for
the LORD was moved to
pity by
their groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
And it came to pass, when
the judge was dead, that
they returned, and corrupted
themselves more than
their fathers, in following other gods to serve
them, and to bow down unto
them;
they ceased not from
their own doings, nor from
their stubborn way.
But when
the judge died,
the Israelites became even more corrupt than
their fathers, going after other gods to serve
them and bow down to
them.
They would not give up
their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And
the anger of
the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath
transgressed my covenant which I commanded
their fathers, and have not
hearkened unto my voice;
So
the anger of
the LORD burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has
transgressed the covenant I laid down for
their fathers and has not
heeded My voice,
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.
That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
In this way I will test whether Israel will keep the way of the LORD by walking in it as their fathers did.”
Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving
them out
hastily; neither delivered he
them into
the hand of Joshua.
That is why the LORD had left those nations in place and had not driven them out immediately by delivering them into the hand of Joshua.
Now
these are
the nations which
the LORD left, to prove Israel by
them, even as many of Israel as had not known all
the wars of
Canaan;
These are
the nations that
the LORD left to test all
the Israelites who had not known any of
the wars in
Canaan,
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:
And
they were to prove Israel by
them, to know whether
they would
hearken unto
the commandments of
the LORD, which he commanded
their fathers by
the hand of Moses.
These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.
And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
And they took the daughters of these people in marriage, gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.
And
the children of Israel did evil in
the sight of
the LORD, and
forgat the LORD
their God, and served
Baalim and
the groves.
So
the Israelites did evil in
the sight of
the LORD;
they forgot the LORD
their God and served
the Baals and
the Asherahs.
Therefore the anger of
the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold
them into
the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia: and
the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.
Then the anger of
the LORD burned against Israel, and He sold
them into
the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram-naharaim, and
the Israelites served him eight years.
And when
the children of Israel
cried unto
the LORD,
the LORD raised up a deliverer to
the children of Israel, who delivered
them, even Othniel
the son of Kenaz,
Caleb’s younger brother.
But when
the Israelites
cried out to
the LORD, He raised up Othniel son of
Caleb’s younger brother Kenaz as a deliverer to save
them.
And
the Spirit of
the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and
the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of
Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.
The Spirit of
the LORD came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge and went out to war. And
the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of
Aram into
the hand of Othniel, who prevailed against him.
And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
So the land had rest for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
And
the children of Israel did evil again in
the sight of
the LORD: and
the LORD strengthened
Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because
they had done evil in
the sight of
the LORD.
Once again
the Israelites did evil in
the sight of
the LORD. So He gave
Eglon king of Moab power over Israel, because
they had done evil in
the sight of
the LORD.
And he gathered unto him
the children of
Ammon and Amalek, and went and
smote Israel, and possessed
the city of palm trees.
So
the children of Israel served
Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
The Israelites served
Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.
But when
the children of Israel
cried unto
the LORD,
the LORD raised
them up a deliverer, Ehud
the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him
the children of Israel sent a present unto
Eglon the king of Moab.
And again
they cried out to
the LORD, and He raised up Ehud son of
Gera, a left-handed
Benjamite, as
their deliverer. So
they sent him with tribute to
Eglon king of Moab.
And he brought
the present unto
Eglon king of Moab: and
Eglon was a very fat man.
and brought
the tribute to
Eglon king of Moab, who was an
obese man.
And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.
After Ehud had finished presenting
the tribute, he
ushered out those who had carried it.
But he himself turned again from
the quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto
thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
But upon reaching
the idols near
Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said
the king, and all his attendants left him.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took
the dagger from his right
thigh, and thrust it into his
belly:
And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled
the sword from his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
And
the haft also went in after
the blade; and
the fat closed upon
the blade, so that he could not draw
the dagger out of his
belly; and
the dirt came out.
Then Ehud went forth through
the porch, and shut
the doors of
the parlour upon him, and locked
them.
Then Ehud went out through
the porch, closing and locking
the doors of
the upper room behind him.
When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.
After Ehud was gone,
Eglon’s servants came in and found
the doors of
the upper room locked. “He must be
relieving himself in
the cool room,”
they said.
And
they tarried till
they were
ashamed: and, behold, he opened not
the doors of
the parlour;
therefore they took a key, and opened
them: and, behold,
their lord was fallen down dead on
the earth.
So
they waited until
they became
worried and saw that he had still not opened
the doors of
the upper room.
Then they took
the key and opened
the doors—and
there was
their lord lying dead on
the floor.
And Ehud escaped while
they tarried, and passed beyond
the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.
Ehud, however, had escaped while the servants waited. He passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah.
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in
the mountain of Ephraim, and
the children of Israel went down with him from
the mount, and he before
them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout
the hill country of Ephraim.
The Israelites came down with him from
the hills, and he became
their leader.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told
them, “for
the LORD has delivered your enemies
the Moabites into your hand.” So
they followed him down and seized
the fords of
the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
And
they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all
lusty, and all men of valour; and
there escaped not a man.
At that time
they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all
robust and
valiant men. Not one of
them escaped.
