So
Manoah took a
kid with a meat offering, and offered it upon a rock unto the LORD: and the angel did wonderously; and
Manoah and his wife looked on.
Then
Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the LORD. And as
Manoah and his wife looked on, the LORD did a
marvelous thing.
Then went
Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion
roared against him.
Then
Samson went down to Timnah
with his father and mother and came to the vineyards of Timnah. Suddenly a young lion came
roaring at him,
And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart
with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And he went down, and talked
with the woman; and she pleased
Samson well.
Then
Samson continued on his way down and spoke to the woman, because she was pleasing to his eyes.
And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the
carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a
swarm of bees and honey in the
carcase of the lion.
When
Samson returned later to take her, he left the road to see the lion’s
carcass, and in it was a
swarm of bees, along
with their honey.
And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
And when the Philistines saw him, they selected thirty men to
accompany him.
And
Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a
riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me
within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
“Let me tell you a
riddle,”
Samson said to them. “If you can
solve it for me
within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto
Samson’s wife,
Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the
riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house
with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
So on the fourth day they said to
Samson’s wife, “
Entice your husband to explain the
riddle to us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you
invite us here to
rob us?”
And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not
plowed with my
heifer, ye had not found out my
riddle.
Before
sunset on the seventh day, the men of the city said to
Samson: “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” So he said to them: “If you had not
plowed with my
heifer, you would not have
solved my
riddle!”
And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and
slew thirty men of them, and took their
spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which
expounded the
riddle. And his anger was
kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
Then the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, killed thirty of their men, took their
apparel, and gave their clothes to those who had
solved the
riddle. And burning
with anger,
Samson returned to his father’s house,
But it came to pass
within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that
Samson visited his wife
with a
kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.
Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,
Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said. But her father would not let him enter.
And when he had set the brands on fire, he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards and olives.
Then he
lit the torches and released the foxes into the standing grain of the Philistines, burning up the piles of grain and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.
Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered,
Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father
with fire.
“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded. “It was
Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were told. “For his wife was given to his companion.” So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death.
And he
smote them
hip and
thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.
And he struck them
ruthlessly with a great slaughter, and then went down and stayed in the cave at the rock of Etam.
And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
“No,” they answered, “we will not kill you, but we will
tie you up securely and hand you over to them.” So they bound him
with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt
with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose from his hands.
And
Samson said,
With the
jawbone of an
ass, heaps upon heaps,
with the jaw of an
ass have I slain a thousand men.
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away
with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
Some time later,
Samson fell in love
with a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose name was
Delilah.
And
Samson said unto her, If they bind me
with seven green
withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Samson told her, “If they
tie me up
with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become as weak as any other man.”
Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them.
So the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she
tied him up
with them.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the
withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
He replied, “If they
tie me up
with new ropes that have never been used, I will become as weak as any other man.”
Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him
therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And there were liers in wait
abiding in the chamber. And he
brake them from off his arms like a thread.
So
Delilah took new ropes,
tied him up
with them, and called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But while the men were hidden in her room, he
snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head
with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You have
mocked me and
lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it
with a pin, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And she fastened it
with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awaked out of his sleep, and went away
with the pin of the beam, and
with the web.
So while he
slept,
Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and
wove them into the web. Then she
tightened it
with a pin and called to him, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin
with the
loom and the web.
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not
with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your heart is not
with me? This is the third time you have
mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the source of your great strength!”
And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily
with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was
vexed unto death;
Finally, after she had pressed him daily
with her words and
pleaded until he was sick to death,
But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, and bound him
with fetters of brass; and he did
grind in the prison house.
Then the Philistines seized him,
gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, where he was bound
with bronze
shackles and forced to
grind grain in the prison.
And
Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and
strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once
avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then
Samson called out to the LORD: “O Lord GOD, please remember me.
Strengthen me, O God, just once more, so that
with one
vengeful blow I may pay back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
And
Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one
with his right hand, and of the other
with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them
with his right hand on one
pillar and his left hand on the other,
And
Samson said, Let me die
with the Philistines. And he bowed himself
with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die
with the Philistines.” Then he pushed
with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.
said to his mother, “The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you and about which I heard you utter a
curse—I have the silver here
with me; I took it.” Then his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the LORD!”
And there was a young man out of Bethlehemjudah of the family of Judah, who was a
Levite, and he
sojourned there.
And there was a young
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah who had been residing
within the clan of Judah.
And
Micah said unto him, Dwell
with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of
apparel, and thy
victuals. So the
Levite went in.
“Stay
with me,”
Micah said to him, “and be my father and priest, and I will give you ten shekels of silver per year, a suit of clothes, and your provisions.” So the
Levite went in
And the
Levite was content to dwell
with the man; and the young man was unto him as one of his sons.
and agreed to stay
with him, and the young man became like a son to
Micah.
And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth
Micah with me, and hath
hired me, and I am his priest.
“
Micah has done this and that for me,” he replied, “and he has
hired me to be his priest.”
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance
with anyone.
And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.
So six hundred Danites departed from Zorah and Eshtaol, armed with weapons of war.
And the six hundred men appointed
with their weapons of war, which were of the children of
Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.
The six hundred Danites stood at the entrance of the gate, armed with their weapons of war.
And the five men that went to
spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the
graven image, and the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate
with the six hundred men that were appointed
with weapons of war.
And the five men who had gone to
spy out the land went inside and took the
graven image, the
ephod, the household idols, and the
molten idol, while the priest stood at the entrance of the gate
with the six hundred armed men.
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And the priest’s heart was
glad, and he took the
ephod, and the
teraphim, and the
graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
So the priest was
glad and took the
ephod, the household idols, and the
graven image, and went
with the people.
And they
cried unto the children of
Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto
Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest
with such a company?
When they called out after them, the Danites turned to face them and said to
Micah, “What is the matter
with you that you have called out such a company?”
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?
He replied, “You took the gods I had made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you say to me, ‘What is the matter with you?’”
And the children of
Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest
angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life,
with the lives of thy household.
The Danites said to him, “Do not raise your voice against us, or
angry men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives.”
And they took the things which
Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they
smote them
with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city
with fire.
After they had taken
Micah’s idols and his priest, they went to Laish, to a
tranquil and
unsuspecting people, and they struck them
with their swords and burned down the city.
And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
There was no one to deliver them, because the city was far from
Sidon and had no alliance
with anyone; it was in a valley near Beth-rehob. And the Danites rebuilt the city and lived there.
And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant
with him, and a couple of
asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the
damsel saw him, he
rejoiced to meet him.
her husband got up and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her back, taking his servant and a pair of
donkeys. So the
girl brought him into her father’s house, and when her father saw him, he
gladly welcomed him.
And his father in law, the
damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode
with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and
lodged there.
His father-in-law, the
girl’s father, persuaded him to stay, so he remained
with him three days, eating, drinking, and
lodging there.
And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart
with a
morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart
with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his
concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the
damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you
tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end,
lodge here, that thine heart may be
merry; and to
morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
When the man got up to depart
with his
concubine and his servant, his father-in-law, the
girl’s father, said to him, “Look, the day is drawing to a close. Please
spend the night. See, the day is almost over.
Spend the night here, that your heart may be
merry. Then you can get up early
tomorrow for your journey home.”
But the man would not
tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against
Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were
with him two
asses saddled, his
concubine also was
with him.
But the man was unwilling to
spend the night. He got up and departed, and arrived opposite
Jebus (that is, Jerusalem),
with his two
saddled donkeys and his
concubine.
Yet there is both straw and
provender for our
asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy
handmaid, and for the young man which is
with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
even though there is both straw and feed for our
donkeys, and bread and wine for me and the
maidservant and young man
with me. There is nothing that we, your servants, lack.”
And the old man said, Peace be
with thee;
howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only
lodge not in the street.
“Peace to you,” said the old man. “Let me supply everything you need. Only do not
spend the night in the square.”
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
Behold, here is my daughter a
maiden, and his
concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do
with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so
vile a thing.
Look, let me bring out my virgin daughter and the man’s
concubine, and you can use them and do
with them as you wish. But do not do such a
vile thing to this man.”
And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his
concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the
threshold.
In the morning, when her master got up and opened the doors of the house to go out on his journey, there was his
concubine,
collapsed in the
doorway of the house,
with her hands on the
threshold.
And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his
concubine, and divided her, together
with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
When he reached his house, he
picked up a knife, took hold of his
concubine, cut her limb by limb into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba,
with the land of
Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.
Then all the Israelites from
Dan to
Beersheba and from the land of
Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man before the LORD at
Mizpah.
And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand
footmen that drew sword.
The leaders of all the people and all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of God’s people: 400,000 men on foot, armed with swords.
Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could
sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Among all these soldiers there were 700 select left-handers, each of whom could
sling a stone at a hair
without missing.
And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
That same day the Benjamites came out against them from Gibeah and cut down another 18,000 Israelites, all of them armed with swords.
And the LORD
smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
The LORD defeated Benjamin in the presence of Israel, and on that day the Israelites slaughtered 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
And the liers in wait hasted, and
rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and
smote all the city
with the edge of the sword.
The men in
ambush rushed suddenly against Gibeah; they advanced and put the whole city to the sword.
Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.
The men of Israel had arranged a signal
with the men in
ambush: When they sent up a great cloud of smoke from the city,
But when the flame began to arise up out of the city
with a
pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.
But when the column of smoke began to go up from the city, the Benjamites looked behind them and saw the whole city going up in smoke.
Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and
chased them, and
trode them down
with ease over against Gibeah toward the
sunrising.
They surrounded the Benjamites, pursued them, and easily overtook them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them
with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and
smite the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead with the edge of the sword,
with the women and the children.
So the congregation sent 12,000 of their most
valiant men and commanded them: “Go and put to the sword those living in
Jabesh-
gilead, including women and children.
And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath
lain by man.
This is what you are to do:
Devote to destruction every male, as well as every female who has had relations
with a man.”
And they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying
with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan.
So they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young women who had not had relations
with a man, and they brought them to the camp at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan.
Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to
sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.
In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a certain man from
Bethlehem in Judah,
with his wife and two sons, went to reside in the land of Moab.
And Elimelech
Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
Then
Naomi’s husband Elimelech died, and she was left
with her two sons,
And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.
both Mahlon and Chilion also died, and
Naomi was left
without her two sons and
without her husband.
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
When
Naomi heard in Moab that the LORD had attended to His people by providing them
with food, she and her daughters-in-law prepared to leave the land of Moab.
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
Accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road leading back to the land of Judah.
And
Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly
with you, as ye have dealt
with the dead, and
with me.
Then
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you to your mother’s home. May the LORD show you loving devotion, as you have shown to your dead and to me.
And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.
and said, “Surely we will return with you to your people.”
And
Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go
with me? are there yet any more sons in my
womb, that they may be your husbands?
But
Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you go
with me? Are there still sons in my
womb to become your husbands?
When she saw that she was
stedfastly minded to go
with her, then she left speaking unto her.
When
Naomi saw that
Ruth was determined to go
with her, she stopped trying to
persuade her.
And she said unto them, Call me not
Naomi, call me
Mara: for the
Almighty hath dealt very bitterly
with me.
“Do not call me
Naomi,” she replied. “Call me
Mara, because the
Almighty has dealt quite bitterly
with me.
So
Naomi returned, and
Ruth the
Moabitess, her daughter in law,
with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to
Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
So
Naomi returned from the land of Moab
with her daughter-in-law
Ruth the
Moabitess. And they arrived in
Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
And behold, Boaz came from
Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be
with you. And they answered him, The LORD
bless thee.
Just then Boaz arrived from
Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, “The LORD be
with you.” “The LORD
bless you,” they replied.
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the
Moabitish damsel that came back
with Naomi out of the country of Moab:
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou
gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law
with whom she had wrought, and said, The man’s name
with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.
Then her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you
glean today, and where did you work? Blessed be the man who noticed you.” So she told her mother-in-law where she had worked. “The name of the man I worked
with today is Boaz,” she said.
And
Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And
Naomi said unto her, The man is near of
kin unto us, one of our next
kinsmen.
Then
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the LORD, who has not
withdrawn His kindness from the living or the dead.”
Naomi continued, “The man is a close relative. He is one of our
kinsman-redeemers.”
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.
Then
Ruth the
Moabitess said, “He also told me, ‘Stay
with my young men until they have finished gathering all my harvest.’”
And
Naomi said unto
Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out
with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field.
And
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law
Ruth, “My daughter, it is good for you to work
with his young women, so that nothing will happen to you in another field.”
So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to
glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt
with her mother in law.
So
Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz to
glean grain until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived
with her mother-in-law.
Then
Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well
with thee?
One day
Ruth’s mother-in-law
Naomi said to her, “My daughter, should I not seek a resting place for you, that it may be well
with you?
And now is not Boaz of our kindred,
with whose maidens thou
wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
Now is not Boaz,
with whose servant girls you have been working, a relative of ours? In fact,
tonight he is
winnowing barley on the
threshing floor.
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are
witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of
Naomi.
At this, Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are
witnesses today that I am
buying from
Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech, Chilion, and Mahlon.
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are
witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are
witnesses today.”
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are
witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are
witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
So Boaz took
Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
So Boaz took
Ruth, and she became his wife. And when he had relations
with her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.
And the women said unto
Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day
without a
kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
Then the women said to
Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day
without a
kinsman-
redeemer. May his name become famous in Israel.
And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and
wept sore.
In her bitter distress,
Hannah prayed to the LORD and
wept with many tears.
