He walked also after their counsel, and went with Jehoram the son of
Ahab king of Israel to war
against Hazael king of Syria at
Ramoth-
gilead: and the Syrians
smote Joram.
And he returned to be
healed in
Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at
Ramah, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria. And
Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of
Ahab at
Jezreel, because he was sick.
so he returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought
against Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had been wounded.
And the destruction of
Ahaziah was of God by coming to
Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram
against Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had
anointed to cut off the house of
Ahab.
Now it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s
scribe and the high priest’s officer came and
emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place
again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
Whenever the chest was brought by the Levites to the king’s overseers and they saw that there was a large amount of money, the royal
scribe and the officer of the high priest would come and empty the chest and carry it back to its place. They did this daily and gathered the money in abundance.
Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them
again unto the LORD; and they
testified against them: but they would not give ear.
Nevertheless, the LORD sent prophets to bring the people back to Him and to
testify against them; but they would not
listen.
And they
conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD.
And it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up
against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the
spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.
In the spring, the army of
Aram went to war
against Joash. They entered Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the leaders of the people, and they sent all the
plunder to their king in Damascus.
For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had
forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment
against Joash.
Although the
Aramean army had come with only a few men, the LORD delivered into their hand a very great army. Because Judah had
forsaken the LORD, the God of their fathers, judgment was executed on
Joash.
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants
conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
And these are they that
conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a
Moabitess.
Those who
conspired against Joash were Zabad son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad son of Shimrith the
Moabitess.
Then
Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home
again: wherefore their anger was greatly
kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
So
Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. And they were
furious with Judah and returned home in great anger.
Wherefore the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned
against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet, who said, “Why have you sought this people’s gods, which could not deliver them from your hand?”
Now after the time that
Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a
conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to
Lachish: but they sent to
Lachish after him, and
slew him there.
From the time that
Amaziah turned from following the LORD, a
conspiracy was formed
against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to
Lachish. But men were sent after him to
Lachish, and they killed him there.
And he went forth and
warred against the Philistines, and
brake down the wall of
Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of
Ashdod, and built cities about
Ashdod, and among the Philistines.
Uzziah went out to
wage war
against the Philistines, and he
tore down the walls of
Gath, Jabneh, and
Ashdod. Then he built cities near
Ashdod and among the Philistines.
And God helped him
against the Philistines, and
against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-
baal, and the Mehunims.
God helped him
against the Philistines,
against the Arabs living in Gur-
baal, and
against the Meunites.
And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
Under their authority was an army of 307,500 trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies.
But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he
transgressed against the LORD his God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
But when Uzziah grew powerful, his
arrogance led to his own destruction. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, for he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.
And they
withstood Uzziah the king, and said unto him, It appertaineth not unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron, that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for thou hast
trespassed; neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God.
They took their stand against King Uzziah and said, “Uzziah, you have no right to offer incense to the LORD. Only the priests, the descendants of Aaron, are consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have acted unfaithfully; you will not receive honor from the LORD God.”
Then Uzziah was
wroth, and had a
censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was
wroth with the priests, the
leprosy even rose up in his
forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD, from beside the incense altar.
Uzziah, with a
censer in his hand to offer incense, was
enraged. But while he
raged against the priests in their presence in the house of the LORD before the altar of incense,
leprosy broke out on his
forehead.
He fought also with the king of the
Ammonites, and prevailed
against them. And the children of
Ammon gave him the same year an hundred talents of silver, and ten thousand measures of wheat, and ten thousand of barley. So much did the children of
Ammon pay unto him, both the second year, and the third.
Jotham
waged war
against the king of the
Ammonites and defeated them, and that year they gave him a hundred talents of silver, ten thousand cors of wheat, and ten thousand cors of barley. They paid him the same in the second and third years.
But a prophet of the LORD was there, whose name was
Oded: and he went out before the host that came to Samaria, and said unto them, Behold, because the LORD God of your fathers was
wroth with Judah, he hath delivered them into your hand, and ye have slain them in a
rage that reacheth up unto heaven.
But a prophet of the LORD named
Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army that returned to Samaria. “Look,” he said to them, “because of His wrath
against Judah, the LORD, the God of your fathers, has delivered them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a
rage that reaches up to heaven.
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for
bondmen and
bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins
against the LORD your God?
And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?
Now hear me therefore, and deliver the
captives again, which ye have taken
captive of your brethren: for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.
Now therefore,
listen to me and return the
captives you took from your
kinsmen, for the fierce anger of the LORD is upon you.”
Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim,
Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and
Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up
against them that came from the war,
Then some of the leaders of the Ephraimites—
Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and
Amasa son of Hadlai—stood in opposition to those arriving from the war.
And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the
captives hither: for whereas we have
offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our
trespass: for our
trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath
against Israel.
“You must not bring the
captives here,” they said, “for you are
proposing to bring guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our sins and our guilt. For our guilt is great, and fierce anger is upon Israel.”
For
again the Edomites had come and
smitten Judah, and carried away
captives.
The Edomites had
again come and attacked Judah and carried away
captives.
For the LORD brought Judah low because of
Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and
transgressed sore against the LORD.
For the LORD humbled Judah because
Ahaz king of Israel had thrown off restraint in Judah and had been most unfaithful to the LORD.
And in the time of his distress did he
trespass yet more
against the LORD: this is that king
Ahaz.
In the time of his distress, King
Ahaz became even more unfaithful to the LORD.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn
again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which
trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to
desolation, as ye see.
Do not be like your fathers and brothers who were unfaithful to the LORD, the God of their fathers, so that He made them an object of
horror, as you can see.
For if ye turn
again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them that lead them
captive, so that they shall come
again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.
For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and sons will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and will return to this land. For the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful; He will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”
After these things, and the establishment thereof,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and
encamped against the
fenced cities, and thought to
win them for himself.
After all these acts of faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, intending to
conquer them for himself.
And when
Hezekiah saw that
Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight
against Jerusalem,
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege
against Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
And his servants spake yet more
against the LORD God, and
against his servant
Hezekiah.
And the servants of
Sennacherib spoke further
against the LORD God and
against His servant
Hezekiah.
He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak
against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of
Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
He also wrote letters
mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying
against Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their people from my hand, so the God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”
And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.
They spoke against the God of Jerusalem as they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth—the work of human hands.
But
Hezekiah rendered not
again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
But because his heart was proud,
Hezekiah did not repay the favor shown to him. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem.
For he built
again the high places which
Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for
Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
For he rebuilt the high places that his father
Hezekiah had
torn down, and he raised up altars for the Baals and made Asherah poles. And he worshiped and served all the host of heaven.
Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so that they will take
heed to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to leave the land that I assigned to your fathers, if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses—all the laws, statutes, and judgments.”
Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took
Manasseh among the thorns, and bound him with
fetters, and carried him to Babylon.
So the LORD brought
against them the military commanders of the king of Assyria, who captured
Manasseh, put a hook in his nose, bound him with bronze
shackles, and took him to Babylon.
And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his
supplication, and brought him
again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.
And when he prayed to Him, the LORD received his
plea and heard his petition; so He brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew that the LORD is God.
And his servants
conspired against him, and
slew him in his own house.
Then the servants of Amon
conspired against him and killed him in his palace.
But the people of the land
slew all them that had
conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made
Josiah his son king in his
stead.
But the people of the land killed all those who had
conspired against King Amon, and they made his son
Josiah king in his place.
And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.
Then Shaphan brought the book to the king and reported, “Your servants are doing all that has been placed in their hands.
Because thine heart was tender, and thou
didst humble
thyself before God, when thou heardest his words
against this place, and
against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst
thyself before me, and
didst rend thy clothes, and
weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before God when you heard His words
against this place and
against its people, and because you have humbled
yourself before Me and you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
‘Now I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the
calamity that I will bring on this place and on its inhabitants.’” So they brought her answer back to the king.
After all this, when
Josiah had prepared the temple,
Necho king of Egypt came up to fight
against Charchemish by Euphrates: and
Josiah went out
against him.
After all this, when
Josiah had set the temple in order, Neco king of Egypt marched up to fight at Carchemish by the Euphrates, and
Josiah went out to
confront him.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not
against thee this day, but
against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come
against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Now the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and
Jehoiachin his son reigned in his
stead.
As for the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, the abominations he committed, and all that was found
against him, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. And his son
Jehoiachin reigned in his place.
And the LORD God of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up
betimes, and sending; because he had
compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
Again and
again the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to His people through His messengers because He had
compassion on them and on His dwelling place.
But they
mocked the messengers of God, and
despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose
against his people, till there was no remedy.
But they
mocked the messengers of God,
despising His words and
scoffing at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD
against His people was
stirred up beyond remedy.
Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who
slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no
compassion upon young man or
maiden, old man, or him that
stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.
So He brought up
against them the king of the Chaldeans, who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary,
sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm. God gave them all into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar,
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came
again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
And
hired counsellors
against them, to
frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
They
hired counselors
against them to
frustrate their plans throughout the reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
And in the reign of
Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an
accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the
scribe wrote a letter
against Jerusalem to
Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
Rehum the commander and Shimshai the
scribe wrote the letter
against Jerusalem to King
Artaxerxes as follows:
Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up
again, then will they not pay
toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt
endamage the revenue of the kings.
Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, they will not pay tribute, duty, or
toll, and the royal treasury will suffer.
We
certify the king that, if this city be builded
again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
We
advise the king that if this city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, you will have no dominion west of the Euphrates.
And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection
against kings, and that rebellion and
sedition have been made therein.
I issued a decree, and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has revolted
against kings from ancient times,
engaging in rebellion and
sedition.
And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought
again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
Furthermore, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon, must also be returned to the temple in Jerusalem and deposited in the house of God.
And the children of Israel, which were come
again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the
filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the LORD God of Israel, did eat,
The Israelites who had returned from exile
ate it, together with all who had separated themselves from the uncleanness of the peoples of the land to seek the LORD, the God of Israel.
Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be
diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath
against the realm of the king and his sons?
Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven must be done
diligently for His house. For why should wrath fall on the realm of the king and his sons?
And
whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to
banishment, or to
confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.
If
anyone does not keep the law of your God and the law of the king, let a strict judgment be executed
against him, whether death,
banishment,
confiscation of property, or imprisonment.
For I was
ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and
horsemen to help us
against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is
against all them that
forsake him.
For I was
ashamed to ask the king for an
escort of soldiers and
horsemen to protect us from our enemies on the road, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is
gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is
against all who
forsake Him.”
Should we
again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be
angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no
remnant nor escaping?
shall we
again break Your commandments and
intermarry with the peoples who commit these abominations? Would You not become so
angry with us as to
wipe us out, leaving no
remnant or
survivor?
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of
Elam, answered and said unto
Ezra, We have
trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an
Elamite, said to
Ezra: “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the people of the land, yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
Let thine ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have
sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the sins that we Israelites have committed
against You. Both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
We have
behaved corruptly
against You and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that You gave Your servant Moses.
But when
Sanballat the Horonite,
Tobiah the
Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard about this, they
mocked us and
ridiculed us, saying, “What is this you are doing? Are you rebelling
against the king?”
And next unto them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even over against his house. And next unto him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah.
next to him, Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs across from his house; and next to him, Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs.
After him repaired
Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of the half part of Beth-zur, unto the place over
against the
sepulchres of David, and to the
pool that was made, and unto the house of the mighty.
Beyond him,
Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth-zur, made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs of David, as far as the artificial
pool and the House of the Mighty.
And next to him repaired Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of
Mizpah, another piece over
against the going up to the armoury at the turning of the wall.
And next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of
Mizpah, repaired another section opposite the
Ascent to the
Armory, near the angle in the wall.
After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over
against their house. After him repaired
Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house.
Beyond them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house, and next to them,
Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house.
Palal the son of Uzai, over against the turning of the wall, and the tower which lieth out from the king’s high house, that was by the court of the prison. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh.
and Palal son of Uzai made repairs opposite the angle and the tower that juts out from the upper palace of the king near the
courtyard of the guard. Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh
Moreover the
Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, unto the place over
against the water gate toward the east, and the tower that lieth out.
and the temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the tower that juts out.
After them the Tekoites repaired another piece, over against the great tower that lieth out, even unto the wall of Ophel.
And next to them, the Tekoites repaired another section, from a point opposite the great tower that juts out to the wall of Ophel.
From above the horse gate repaired the priests, every one over against his house.
Above the Horse Gate, each of the priests made repairs in front of his own house.
After them repaired
Zadok the son of Immer over
against his house. After him repaired also Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the east gate.
Next to them,
Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house, and next to him, Shemaiah son of Shecaniah, the guard of the East Gate, made repairs.
After him repaired Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, another piece. After him repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah over against his chamber.
Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, as well as Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his own quarters.
After him repaired Malchiah the
goldsmith’s son unto the place of the
Nethinims, and of the merchants, over
against the gate Miphkad, and to the going up of the corner.
Next to him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the upper room above the corner.
And
conspired all of them together to come and to fight
against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.
Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.
And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.
About that time there was a great outcry from the people and their wives against their fellow Jews.
Then I consulted with myself, and I
rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact
usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly
against them.
and after serious thought I
rebuked the nobles and officials, saying, “You are exacting
usury from your own brothers!” So I called a large assembly
against them
And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy
against me: for
Tobiah and
Sanballat had
hired him.
I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had uttered this prophecy
against me because
Tobiah and
Sanballat had
hired him.
And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and
appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over
against his house.
And I told them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot. While the guards are on duty, keep the doors shut and securely fastened. And
appoint the residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their own homes.”
These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came

Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
And all the congregation of them that were come
again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of
Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great
gladness.
The whole assembly who had returned from exile made booths and lived in them. From the days of Joshua son of
Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated like this. And there was great
rejoicing.
And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly
against them. So
didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.
You performed signs and wonders
against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew they had acted with
arrogance against our fathers. You made a name for
Yourself that endures to this day.
Nevertheless they were
disobedient, and rebelled
against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and
slew thy prophets which
testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations.
But they were
disobedient and rebelled
against You; they
flung Your law behind their backs. They killed Your prophets, who had
admonished them to return to You. They committed terrible blasphemies.
But after they had rest, they did evil
again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and
cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times
didst thou deliver them according to thy
mercies;
But as soon as they had rest, they
again did evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to the hands of their enemies, who had dominion over them. When they
cried out to You
again, You heard from heaven, and You delivered them many times in Your
compassion.
And testifiedst
against them, that thou mightest bring them
again unto thy law: yet they dealt proudly, and
hearkened not unto thy commandments, but
sinned against thy judgments, (which if a man do, he shall live in them;) and withdrew the shoulder, and
hardened their neck, and would not hear.
You
admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were
arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They
sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They
stubbornly shrugged their shoulders; they
stiffened their necks and would not obey.
Yet many years
didst thou
forbear them, and testifiedst
against them by thy spirit in thy prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gavest thou them into the hand of the people of the lands.
You were patient with them for many years, and Your Spirit
admonished them through Your prophets. Yet they would not
listen, so You gave them into the hands of the
neighboring peoples.
Our kings and leaders and priests and fathers did not obey Your law or
listen to Your commandments and warnings that You gave them.
Also Bakbukiah and Unni, their brethren, were over against them in the watches.
Bakbukiah and Unni, their associates, stood across from them in the services.
And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren over
against them, to praise and to give
thanks, according to the commandment of David the man of God, ward over
against ward.
The leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, and Jeshua son of Kadmiel, along with their associates, who stood across from them to give praise and
thanksgiving as one section alternated with the other, as prescribed by David the man of God.
And at the fountain gate, which was over against them, they went up by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall, above the house of David, even unto the water gate eastward.
At the Fountain Gate they
climbed the steps of the City of David on the
ascent to the wall and passed above the house of David to the Water Gate on the east.
