If a false witness rise up against
any man to
testify against him that which is wrong;
If a false witness testifies against someone,
accusing him of a crime,
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
Then the rest of the people will hear and be afraid, and they will never again do anything so evil among you.
And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man
dedicate it.
Furthermore, the officers are to address the army, saying, “Has
any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man
dedicate it.
And what man is he that hath planted a
vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
Has
any man planted a
vineyard and not begun to enjoy its fruit? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man enjoy its fruit.
And what man is there that hath
betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Has
any man become
pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man marry her.”
And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and
fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart
faint as well as his heart.
Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying, “Is
any man afraid or
fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his brothers will not
melt like his own.”
But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God
doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you must not leave alive anything that breathes.
His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in
any wise
bury him that day; (for he that is
hanged is
accursed of God;) that thy land be not
defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
you must not leave the body on the tree overnight, but you must be sure to
bury him that day, because
anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s
curse. You must not
defile the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.
Thou shalt not see the brother’s ox or his sheep go
astray, and hide
thyself from them: thou shalt in
any case bring them again unto thy brother.
If you see your brother’s ox or sheep
straying, you must not
ignore it; be sure to return it to your brother.
In like manner shalt thou do with his
ass; and so shalt thou do with his
raiment; and with all lost things of thy brother’s, which he hath lost, and thou hast found, shalt thou do likewise: thou mayest not hide
thyself.
And you shall do the same for his
donkey, his
cloak, or
anything your brother has lost and you have found. You must not
ignore it.
If a bird’s nest chance to be before thee in the way in
any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones, or eggs, and the
dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the
dam with the young:
If you come across a bird’s nest with chicks or eggs, either in a tree or on the ground along the road, and the mother is sitting on the chicks or eggs, you must not take the mother along with the young.
But thou shalt in
any wise let the
dam go, and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest
prolong thy days.
You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may be well with you and that you may
prolong your days.
When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.
If you build a new house, you are to construct a railing around your roof, so that you do not bring bloodguilt on your house if someone falls from it.
If
any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and
hate her,
Suppose a man marries a woman, has relations with her, and comes to
hate her,
A
bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.
No one of
illegitimate birth may enter the assembly of the LORD, nor may
any of his descendants, even to the tenth generation.
An
Ammonite or
Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever:
No
Ammonite or
Moabite or
any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, even to the tenth generation.
If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:
If
any man among you becomes unclean because of a
nocturnal emission, he must leave the camp and stay outside.
For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy: that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee.
For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, lest He see anything unclean among you and turn away from you.
Thou shalt not bring the
hire of a
whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for
any vow: for even both these are
abomination unto the LORD thy God.
You must not bring the wages of a
prostitute, whether female or male, into the house of the LORD your God to
fulfill any vow, because both are
detestable to the LORD your God.
Do not charge your brother interest on money, food, or
any other type of
loan.
When thou comest into thy neighbour’s
vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put
any in thy vessel.
When you enter your
neighbor’s
vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, but you must not put
any in your
basket.
When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with
any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall
cheer up his wife which he hath taken.
If a man is newly married, he must not be sent to war or be pressed into any duty. For one year he is free to stay at home and bring joy to the wife he has married.
If a man be found
stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh
merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that
thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.
If a man is caught
kidnapping one of his
Israelite brothers, whether he treats him as a slave or sells him, the
kidnapper must die. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
When thou
dost lend thy brother
any thing, thou shalt not go into his house to
fetch his
pledge.
When you
lend anything to your
neighbor, do not enter his house to collect security.
In
any case thou shalt deliver him the
pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own
raiment, and
bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
be sure to return it to him by
sunset, so that he may sleep in his own
cloak and
bless you, and this will be credited to you as righteousness before the LORD your God.
Forty stripes he may give him, and not exceed: lest, if he should exceed, and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem
vile unto thee.
He may receive no more than forty lashes, lest your brother be beaten
any more than that and be
degraded in your sight.
I have not eaten thereof in my
mourning, neither have I taken away ought thereof for
any unclean use, nor given ought thereof for the dead: but I have
hearkened to the voice of the LORD my God, and have done according to all that thou hast commanded me.
I have not eaten
any of the sacred portion while in
mourning, or removed
any of it while unclean, or offered
any of it for the dead. I have obeyed the LORD my God; I have done everything You commanded me.
And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them.
Cursed be he that lieth with
any manner of beast. And all the people shall say,
Amen.
‘
Cursed is he who lies with
any animal.’ And let all the people say, ‘
Amen!’
And thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.
Do not turn aside to the right or to the left from
any of the words I command you
today, and do not go after other gods to serve them.
Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine
ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to
rescue them.
Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat
any of it. Your
donkey will be taken away and not returned to you. Your flock will be given to your enemies, and no one will save you.
So that he will not give to
any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the siege, and in the straitness,
wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates.
refusing to share with
any of them the flesh of his children he will eat because he has nothing left in the siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within all your gates.
And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the siege and straitness,
wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
the
afterbirth that comes from between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of
anything else in the siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within your gates.
And that the whole land thereof is
brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor
any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of
Sodom, and
Gomorrah, Admah, and
Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown and unproductive, with no plant growing on it, just like the destruction of
Sodom and
Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger.
If
any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he
fetch thee:
Even if you have been banished to the
farthest horizon, He will gather you and return you from there.
And that their children, which have not known
any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land
whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.
Then their children who do not know the law will
listen and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.
Israel is a nation devoid of counsel, with no understanding among them.
See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I
heal: neither is there
any that can deliver out of my hand.
See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I
heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
There shall not
any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you nor
forsake you.
Whosoever he be that
doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not
hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
Anyone who rebels against your order and does not obey your words, all that you command him, will be put to death. Above all, be strong and
courageous!”
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did
melt, neither did there remain
any more courage in
any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
When we heard this, our hearts melted and
everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
And it shall be, that
whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and
whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if
any hand be upon him.
If
anyone goes out the door of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on
anyone with you in the house, his blood will be on our heads.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them
any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And the
manna ceased on the
morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel
manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of
Canaan that year.
And the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land, the
manna ceased. There was no more
manna for the Israelites, so that year they began to eat the crops of the land of
Canaan.
And Joshua had commanded the people, saying, Ye shall not
shout, nor make
any noise with your voice, neither shall
any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I
bid you
shout; then shall ye
shout.
But Joshua had commanded the people: “Do not give a battle cry or let your voice be heard; do not let one word come out of your mouth until the day I tell you to
shout. Then you are to
shout!”
But keep away from the things devoted to destruction, lest you
yourself be set apart for destruction. If you take
any of these, you will set apart the camp of Israel for destruction and bring
disaster upon it.
Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were
accursed: neither will I be with you
any more, except ye destroy the
accursed from among you.
This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
And when the men of
Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to
flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
When the men of
Ai turned and looked back, the smoke of the city was rising into the sky. They could not escape in
any direction, and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now became the pursuers.
As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up
any iron: and they offered
thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
just as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses: “an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.” And on it they offered burnt offerings to the LORD, and they sacrificed peace offerings.
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.
The whole army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one
dared to utter a word against the Israelites.
And they
smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not
any left to
breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
The Israelites put
everyone in Hazor to the sword,
devoting them to destruction. Nothing that breathed remained, and Joshua burned down Hazor itself.
But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.
Yet Israel did not burn any of the cities built on their mounds, except Hazor, which Joshua burned.
And all the
spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they
smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they
any to
breathe.
The Israelites took for themselves all the
plunder and
livestock of these cities, but they put all the people to the sword until they had completely destroyed them, not
sparing anyone who breathed.
There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in
Gaza, in
Gath, and in
Ashdod, there remained.
But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.
To the tribe of Levi, however, Moses had given no inheritance. The LORD, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as He had promised them.
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that
whosoever killeth
any person at unawares might
flee thither, and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and foreigners among them, so that
anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.
Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.
Else if ye do in
any wise go back, and
cleave unto the
remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
For if you turn away and
cling to the rest of these nations that remain among you, and if you
intermarry and associate with them,
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out
any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that
spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not
any longer stand before their enemies.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of those who
plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.
Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of
Canaan;
These are the nations that the LORD left to test all the Israelites who had not known
any of the wars in
Canaan,
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when
any man
doth come and
enquire of thee, and say, Is there
any man here? that thou shalt say, No.
“Stand at the entrance to the tent,” he said, “and if
anyone comes and asks you, ‘Is there a man here?’ say, ‘No.’”
And now art thou
any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever
strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,
Are you now so much better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever
contend with Israel or fight against them?
Now therefore
beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not
any unclean thing:
Now please be careful not to drink wine or strong drink, and not to eat anything unclean.
But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat
any unclean thing: for the child shall be a
Nazarite to God from the
womb to the day of his death.
But he said to me, ‘Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat
anything unclean, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to God from the
womb until the day of his death.’”
She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the
uncircumcised Philistines? And
Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
But his father and mother replied, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among
any of our people? Must you go to the
uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?” But
Samson told his father, “Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.”
And
Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Samson told her, “If they
tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become as weak as
any other man.”
And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
He replied, “If they
tie me up with new ropes that have never been used, I will become as weak as
any other man.”
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You have
mocked me and
lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it with a pin, I will become as weak as
any other man.”
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like
any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as
any other man.”
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance with
anyone.
When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
When you enter, you will come to an
unsuspecting people and a
spacious land, for God has delivered it into your hand. It is a place where nothing on earth is lacking.”
And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.
There was no one to deliver them, because the city was far from
Sidon and had no alliance with
anyone; it was in a valley near Beth-rehob. And the Danites rebuilt the city and lived there.
Yet there is both straw and
provender for our
asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy
handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of
any thing.
even though there is both straw and feed for our
donkeys, and bread and wine for me and the
maidservant and young man with me. There is nothing that we, your servants, lack.”
And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.
Then all the people stood as one man and said, “Not one of us will return to his tent or to his house.
Now the men of Israel had
sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not
any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.
Now the men of Israel had
sworn an oath at
Mizpah, saying, “Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a
Benjamite.”
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
And they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with
any male: and they brought them unto the camp to
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan.
So they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young women who had not had relations with a man, and they brought them to the camp at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan.
And
Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet
any more sons in my
womb, that they may be your husbands?
But
Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you go with me? Are there still sons in my
womb to become your husbands?
Where thou
diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD
punish me, and ever so severely, if
anything but death separates you and me.”
And
Naomi said unto
Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in
any other field.
And
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law
Ruth, “My daughter, it is good for you to work with his young women, so that nothing will happen to you in another field.”
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
So she lay down at his feet until morning, but she got up before
anyone else could recognize her. Then Boaz said, “Do not let it be known that a woman came to the
threshing floor.”
Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning
redeeming and concerning changing, for to
confirm all things; a man
plucked off his
shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
Now in former times in Israel, concerning the
redemption or exchange of property, to make
any matter legally binding a man would remove his
sandal and give it to the other party, and this was a
confirmation in Israel.
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had
any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
And the priest’s custom with the people was, that, when
any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
or for the custom of the priests with the people. When
any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
And if
any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.
“What was the message He gave you?”
Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God
punish you, and ever so severely, if you hide from me
anything He said to you.”
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not
respond or pay
any heed.
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in
any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”
And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome, without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the people.
And they ran and
fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than
any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
So they ran and brought Saul, and when he stood among the people, he was a head taller than any of the others.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his
anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose
ass have I taken? or whom have I
defrauded? whom have I
oppressed? or of whose hand have I received
any bribe to blind mine eyes
therewith? and I will restore it you.
Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD and before His
anointed: Whose ox or
donkey have I taken? Whom have I
cheated or
oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a
bribe and closed my eyes? Tell me, and I will restore it to you.”
