Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
Whosoever toucheth the dead body of
any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself, defileth the tabernacle of the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from Israel: because the water of separation was not
sprinkled upon him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
Anyone who touches a human
corpse and fails to
purify himself defiles the tabernacle of the LORD. That person must be cut off from Israel. He remains unclean, because the water of
purification has not been
sprinkled on him, and his uncleanness is still on him.
And every open vessel, which hath no covering bound upon it, is unclean.
and
any open container without a
lid fastened on it is unclean.
And
whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
Anyone in the open field who touches someone who has been killed by the sword or has died of natural causes, or
anyone who touches a human bone or a grave, will be unclean for seven days.
And
whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even.
Anything the unclean person touches will become unclean, and
anyone who touches it will be unclean until evening.”
And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.
Why have you led us up out of Egypt to bring us to this
wretched place? It is not a place of grain, figs, vines, or pomegranates—and there is no water to drink!”
Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
Please let us pass through your land. We will not cut through
any field or
vineyard, or drink water from
any well. We will stay on the King’s
Highway; we will not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”
And the children of Israel said unto him, We will go by the high way: and if I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it: I will only, without doing any thing else, go through on my feet.
“We will stay on the main road,” the Israelites replied, “and if we or our herds drink your water, we will pay for it. There will be no problem; only let us pass through on foot.”
And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.
and spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you led us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water, and we
detest this
wretched food!”
And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a
fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is
bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Make a
fiery serpent and mount it on a pole. When
anyone who is
bitten looks at it, he will live.”
And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had
bitten any man, when he
beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
So Moses made a bronze
snake and mounted it on a pole. If
anyone who was
bitten looked at the bronze
snake, he would live.
Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king’s high way, until we be past thy borders.
“Let us pass through your land. We will not cut through
any field or
vineyard, or drink water from
any well. We will stay on the King’s
Highway until we have passed through your territory.”
And
Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do less or more.
But
Balaam replied to the servants of Balak, “If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do
anything small or great to go beyond the command of the LORD my God.
And
Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now
any power at all to say
any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
“See, I have come to you,”
Balaam replied, “but can I say just
anything? I must speak only the word that God puts in my mouth.”
Surely there is no
enchantment against Jacob, neither is there
any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!
For there is no
spell against Jacob and no
divination against Israel. It will now be said of Jacob and Israel, ‘What great things God has done!’
If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak?
that even if Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not do
anything of my own
accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD? I will speak whatever the LORD says.
In the first day shall be an holy
convocation; ye shall do no manner of
servile work therein:
On the first day there is to be a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.
On the seventh day you shall hold a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.
Also in the day of the firstfruits, when ye bring a new meat offering unto the LORD, after your weeks be out, ye shall have an holy
convocation; ye shall do no
servile work:
On the day of firstfruits, when you present an offering of new grain to the LORD during the Feast of Weeks, you are to hold a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.
And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy
convocation; ye shall do no
servile work: it is a day of blowing the
trumpets unto you.
“On the first day of the seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly, and you must not do
any regular work. This will be a day for you to sound the
trumpets.
And ye shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month an holy
convocation; and ye shall
afflict your souls: ye shall not do
any work therein:
On the tenth day of this seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly, and you shall humble
yourselves; you must not do
any work.
And on the
fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an holy
convocation; ye shall do no
servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days:
On the
fifteenth day of the seventh month, you are to hold a sacred assembly; you must not do
any regular work, and you shall observe a feast to the LORD for seven days.
On the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly: ye shall do no
servile work therein:
On the eighth day you are to hold a solemn assembly; you must not do any regular work.
But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not
any of her vows, or of her bonds
wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall
forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
But if her father prohibits her on the day he hears about it, then none of the vows or pledges by which she has bound herself shall stand. The LORD will
absolve her because her father has prohibited her.
Every
vow, and every binding oath to
afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.
But if he shall any ways make them void after that he hath heard them; then he shall bear her iniquity.
But if he nullifies them after he hears of them, then he will bear her iniquity.”
All of you who have killed a person or touched the dead are to remain outside the camp for seven days. On the third day and the seventh day you are to
purify both
yourselves and your
captives.
Then ye shall
appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you; that the
slayer may
flee thither, which killeth
any person at unawares.
These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the
sojourner among them: that every one that killeth
any person unawares may
flee thither.
These six cities will serve as a refuge for the Israelites and for the foreigner or stranger among them, so that
anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there.
And if he
smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If, however,
anyone strikes a person with an iron object and kills him, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
And if he
smite him with throwing a stone,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
Or if
anyone has in his hand a stone of deadly size, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
Or if he
smite him with an hand weapon of wood,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
If
anyone has in his hand a deadly object of wood, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
But if he thrust him of hatred, or
hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;
But if he thrust him suddenly without
enmity, or have cast upon him
any thing without laying of wait,
Or with
any stone,
wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his
harm:
or without looking drops a heavy stone that kills him, but he was not an enemy and did not intend to
harm him,
But if the
slayer shall at
any time come without the border of the city of his refuge,
whither he was fled;
But if the
manslayer ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which he fled
Whoso killeth
any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not
testify against
any person to cause him to die.
If
anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death on the testimony of the witnesses. But no one is to be put to death based on the testimony of a
lone witness.
And if they be married to
any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe
whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.
But if they marry
any of the men from the other tribes of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the portion of our fathers and added to the tribe into which they marry. So our
allotted inheritance would be taken away.
This is the thing which the LORD
doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.
This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad: They may marry
anyone they please, provided they marry within a clan of the tribe of their father.
And every daughter, that possesseth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.
Every daughter who possesses an inheritance from
any Israelite tribe must marry within a clan of the tribe of her father, so that every
Israelite will possess the inheritance of his fathers.
Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.
Show no
partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be
intimidated by
anyone, for judgment belongs to God. And bring to me
any case too difficult for you, and I will hear it.”
Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a
footbreadth; because I have given mount
Seir unto
Esau for a possession.
Do not
provoke them, for I will not give you
any of their land, not even a
footprint, because I have given Mount
Seir to
Esau as his possession.
And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither
contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.
Then the LORD said to me, “Do not
harass the Moabites or
provoke them to war, for I will not give you
any of their land, because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
And when thou comest
nigh over against the children of
Ammon, distress them not, nor
meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of
Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.
But when you get close to the
Ammonites, do not
harass them or
provoke them, for I will not give you
any of the land of the
Ammonites. I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
Only unto the land of the children of
Ammon thou camest not, nor unto
any place of the river
Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto
whatsoever the LORD our God
forbad us.
But you did not go near the land of the
Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the
Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or
any place that the LORD our God had forbidden.
Take ye therefore good
heed unto
yourselves; for ye saw no manner of
similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in
Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
So since you saw no form of
any kind on the day the LORD spoke to you out of the fire at
Horeb, be careful
that you do not act corruptly and make an
idol for
yourselves of
any form or shape, whether in the likeness of a male or female,
The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
of
any beast that is on the earth or bird that
flies in the air,
The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
or of any creature that crawls on the ground or fish that is in the waters below.
Take
heed unto
yourselves, lest ye
forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a
graven image, or the likeness of
any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
Be careful that you do not
forget the covenant of the LORD your God that He made with you; do not make an
idol for
yourselves in the form of
anything He has forbidden you.
When thou shalt
beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt
yourselves, and make a
graven image, or the likeness of
any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to
provoke him to anger:
After you have children and grandchildren and you have been in the land a long time, if you then act corruptly and make an
idol of
any form—doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God and
provoking Him to anger—
For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other about the days that long preceded you, from the day that God created man on earth: Has anything as great as this ever happened or been reported?
Or hath God
assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
Or has any god tried to take as his own a nation out of another nation—by trials, signs, wonders, and war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors—as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?
Thou shalt not make thee
any graven image, or
any likeness of
any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
You shall not make for
yourself an
idol in the form of
anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath.
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave
anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do
any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy
manservant, nor thy
maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine
ass, nor
any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy
manservant and thy
maidservant may rest as well as thou.
but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God, on which you must not do
any work—neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your
manservant or
maidservant, nor your ox or
donkey or
any of your
livestock, nor the foreigner within your gates, so that your
manservant and
maidservant may rest as you do.
Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour’s wife, neither shalt thou
covet thy neighbour’s house, his field, or his
manservant, or his
maidservant, his ox, or his
ass, or
any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will
consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God
any more, then we shall die.
But now, why should we die? For this great fire will
consume us, and we will die, if we hear the voice of the LORD our God
any longer.
The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than the other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.
And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that
hate thee.
And the LORD will remove from you all sickness. He will not lay upon you
any of the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but He will
inflict them on all who
hate you.
Neither shalt thou bring an
abomination into thine house, lest thou be a
cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly
detest it, and thou shalt utterly
abhor it; for it is a
cursed thing.
And you must not bring
any detestable thing into your house, or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. You are to utterly
detest and
abhor it, because it is set apart for destruction.
A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without
scarceness, thou shalt not lack
any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest
dig brass.
a land where you will eat food without
scarcity, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and whose hills are ready to be mined for copper.
Take
heed to
thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every place that thou seest:
Be careful not to offer your burnt offerings in just any place you see;
Notwithstanding thou mayest kill and eat flesh in all thy gates,
whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee: the unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the
roebuck, and as of the
hart.
But whenever you want, you may slaughter and eat meat within
any of your gates, according to the blessing the LORD your God has given you. Both the
ceremonially clean and unclean may eat it as they would a
gazelle or deer,
Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the
tithe of thy corn, or of thy wine, or of thy oil, or the firstlings of thy herds or of thy flock, nor
any of thy vows which thou vowest, nor thy
freewill offerings, or
heave offering of thine hand:
Within your gates you must not eat the
tithe of your grain or new wine or oil, the
firstborn of your herds or flocks,
any of the offerings that you have
vowed to give, or your
freewill offerings or special gifts.
If the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to put his name there be too far from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy
herd and of thy flock, which the LORD hath given thee, as I have commanded thee, and thou shalt eat in thy gates
whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.
If the place where the LORD your God chooses to put His Name is too far from you, then you may slaughter
any of the
herd or flock He has given you, as I have commanded you, and you may eat it within your gates whenever you want.
And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.
Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you.
Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut
yourselves, nor make
any baldness between your eyes for the dead.
You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut
yourselves or
shave your foreheads on behalf of the dead,
And every beast that parteth the
hoof, and cleaveth the
cleft into two claws, and cheweth the
cud among the beasts, that ye shall eat.
You may eat
any animal that has a split
hoof divided in two and that chews the
cud.
These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
Of all the creatures that live in the water, you may eat anything with fins and scales,
And
whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.
but you may not eat anything that does not have fins and scales; it is unclean for you.
Of all clean birds ye shall eat.
You may eat any clean bird,
And every
raven after his kind,
And the
owl, and the night
hawk, and the cuckow, and the
hawk after his kind,
But of all clean fowls ye may eat.
But you may eat any clean bird.
Ye shall not eat of
any thing that dieth of itself: thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is in thy gates, that he may eat it; or thou mayest sell it unto an
alien: for thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not
seethe a
kid in his mother’s milk.
You are not to eat
any carcass; you may give it to the foreigner residing within your gates, and he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a holy people belonging to the LORD your God. You must not
cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
And thou shalt
bestow that money for
whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for
whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt
rejoice, thou, and thine household,
Then you may
spend the money on
anything you desire: cattle, sheep, wine, strong drink, or
anything you wish. You are to feast there in the presence of the LORD your God and
rejoice with your household.
And this is the manner of the release: Every
creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother; because it is called the LORD’S release.
This is the manner of remission: Every
creditor shall
cancel what he has
loaned to his
neighbor. He is not to collect
anything from his
neighbor or brother, because the LORD’s time of release has been proclaimed.
If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within
any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not
harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:
If there is a poor man among your brothers within
any of the gates in the land that the LORD your God is giving you, then you are not to
harden your heart or shut your hand from your poor brother.
And if there be
any blemish therein, as if it be
lame, or blind, or have
any ill
blemish, thou shalt not sacrifice it unto the LORD thy God.
But if an animal has a defect, is
lame or blind, or has
any serious
flaw, you must not sacrifice it to the LORD your God.
And there shall be no
leavened bread seen with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither shall there
any thing of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain all night until the morning.
No
leaven is to be found in all your land for seven days, and none of the meat you sacrifice in the evening of the first day shall remain until morning.
Thou mayest not sacrifice the
passover within
any of thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee:
You are not to sacrifice the
Passover animal in
any of the towns that the LORD your God is giving you.
Six days thou shalt eat
unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work therein.
For six days you must eat
unleavened bread, and on the seventh day you shall hold a solemn assembly to the LORD your God, and you must not do
any work.
Thou shalt not plant thee a
grove of
any trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.
Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole next to the altar you will build for the LORD your God,
Neither shalt thou set thee up any image; which the LORD thy God hateth.
and do not set up for
yourselves a sacred
pillar, which the LORD your God hates.
Thou shalt not sacrifice unto the LORD thy God
any bullock, or sheep, wherein is
blemish, or
any evilfavouredness: for that is an
abomination unto the LORD thy God.
You shall not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or a sheep with
any defect or serious
flaw, for that is
detestable to the LORD your God.
If there be found among you, within
any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in
transgressing his covenant,
If a man or woman among you in one of the towns that the LORD your God gives you is found doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God by
transgressing His covenant
And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;
and going to worship other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or moon or any of the host of heaven—which I have forbidden—
Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.
you are to
appoint over
yourselves the king whom the LORD your God shall choose.
Appoint a king from among your brothers; you are not to set over
yourselves a foreigner who is not one of your brothers.
And if a
Levite come from
any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he
sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose;
Now if a
Levite moves from
any town of residence throughout Israel and comes in all earnestness to the place the LORD will choose,
There shall not be found among you
any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth
divination, or an observer of times, or an
enchanter, or a
witch,
Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices
divination or
conjury, interprets omens, practices
sorcery,
According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in
Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire
any more, that I die not.
This is what you asked of the LORD your God at
Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God or see this great fire
anymore, so that we will not die!”
And it shall come to pass, that
whosoever will not
hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
And I will hold accountable
anyone who does not
listen to My words that the prophet speaks in My name.
But the prophet, which shall
presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
But if
any prophet
dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or to speak in the name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death.”
Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to
inherit, into three parts, that every
slayer may
flee thither.
You are to build roads for
yourselves and divide into three regions the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that
any manslayer can
flee to these cities.
Lest the
avenger of the blood pursue the
slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and
slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he
hated him not in time past.
Otherwise, the
avenger of blood might pursue the
manslayer in a
rage, overtake him if the distance is great, and strike him dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend
any harm.
But if
any man
hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and
smite him
mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
If, however, a man hates his
neighbor and lies in wait, attacks him and kills him, and then flees to one of these cities,
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
A
lone witness is not sufficient to establish
any wrongdoing or sin against a man, regardless of what
offense he may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
