Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel,
before the people to
Ai.
Joshua got up early the next morning and
mobilized his men, and he and the elders of Israel marched
before them up to
Ai.
And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew
nigh, and came
before the city, and pitched on the north side of
Ai: now there was a valley between them and
Ai.
Then all the troops who were with him marched up and approached the city. They arrived in front of
Ai and camped to the north of it, with the valley between them and the city.
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed,
before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an
ambush had been set up against him behind the city.
And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten back before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.
And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side
before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount
Gerizim, and half of them over against mount
Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded
before, that they should
bless the people of Israel.
All Israel, foreigners and citizens alike, with their elders, officers, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the LORD facing the
Levitical priests who carried it. Half of the people stood in front of Mount
Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount
Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded earlier, to
bless the people of Israel.
There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not
before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were
conversant among them.
There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua failed to read before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who lived among them.
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from
before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants
before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
Therefore the five kings of the
Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of
Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of
Lachish, the king of
Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and
encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.
So the five kings of the
Amorites—the kings of Jerusalem,
Hebron, Jarmuth,
Lachish, and
Eglon—joined forces and advanced with all their armies. They camped
before Gibeon and made war against it.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.
The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have delivered them into your hand. Not one of them shall stand against you.”
And the LORD
discomfited them
before Israel, and
slew them with a great slaughter at
Gibeon, and
chased them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and
smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.
And the LORD threw them into confusion
before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at
Gibeon, pursued them along the
ascent to Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
And it came to pass, as they fled from
before Israel, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel
slew with the sword.
As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the
Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon
Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.
On the day that the LORD gave the
Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel: “O sun, stand still over
Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of
Aijalon.”
And there was no day like that
before it or after it, that the LORD
hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
There has been no day like it
before or since, when the LORD
listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to
morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain
before Israel: thou shalt
hough their horses, and burn their
chariots with fire.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for by this time
tomorrow I will deliver all of them slain
before Israel. You are to
hamstring their horses and burn up their
chariots.”
And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and
smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor
beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword, because Hazor was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.
From Sihor, which is
before Egypt, even unto the borders of
Ekron northward, which is counted to the
Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:
All the territory of the Philistines and the Geshurites, from the Shihor east of Egypt to the territory of
Ekron on the north (considered to be
Canaanite territory)—that of the five
Philistine rulers of
Gaza,
Ashdod, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron, as well as that of the Avvites;
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon unto Misrephoth-
maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from
before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.
All the inhabitants of the hill country from
Lebanon to Misrephoth-
maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out
before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of
Gilead, and half the land of the children of
Ammon, unto Aroer that is
before Rabbah;
The territory of Jazer, all the cities of
Gilead, and half the land of the
Ammonites as far as Aroer, near Rabbah;
And the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.
(
Hebron used to be called Kiriath-arba, after Arba, the greatest man among the
Anakim.) Then the land had rest from war.
And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of
Achor, and so northward, looking toward
Gilgal, that is
before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river: and the border passed toward the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel:
Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of
Achor, turning north to
Gilgal, which faces the
Ascent of Adummim south of the
ravine. It continued along the waters of En-shemesh and came out at En-rogel.
And the border went up by the valley of the son of
Hinnom unto the south side of the Jebusite; the same is Jerusalem: and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth
before the valley of
Hinnom westward, which is at the end of the valley of the giants northward:
From there the border went up the Valley of
Hinnom along the southern slope of the Jebusites (that is, Jerusalem) and ascended to the top of the hill that faces the Valley of
Hinnom on the west, at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim.
And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.
From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
And they came near
before Eleazar the priest, and
before Joshua the son of
Nun, and
before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brethren. Therefore according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
They approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the leaders, and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance among their father’s brothers, in keeping with the command of the LORD.
And the coast of
Manasseh was from Asher to Michmethah, that lieth
before Shechem; and the border went along on the right hand unto the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
Now the border of
Manasseh went from Asher to Michmethath near
Shechem, then southward to include the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at
Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued
before them.
Then the whole congregation of Israel assembled at
Shiloh and set up the Tent of Meeting there. And though the land was subdued
before them,
Ye shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description
hither to me, that I may cast lots for you here
before the LORD our God.
When you have
mapped out the seven portions of land and brought it to me, I will cast lots for you here in the presence of the LORD our God.
And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me, that I may here cast lots for you
before the LORD in
Shiloh.
As the men got up to go out, Joshua commanded them to map out the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will cast lots for you here in
Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”
And Joshua cast lots for them in
Shiloh before the LORD: and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions.
And Joshua cast lots for them in the presence of the LORD at
Shiloh, where he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their divisions.
And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lieth
before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-
baal, which is Kirjath-jearim, a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.
On the west side the border curved southward from the hill facing Beth-horon on the south and came out at Kiriath-
baal (that is, Kiriath-jearim), a city of the sons of Judah. This was the western side.
And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lieth
before the valley of the son of
Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of
Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to En-rogel,
Then it went down to the foot of the hill that faces the Valley of
Hinnom at the northern end of the Valley of
Rephaim and ran down the Valley of
Hinnom toward the southern slope of the Jebusites and
downward to En-rogel.
And their border went up toward the sea, and Maralah, and reached to Dabbasheth, and reached to the river that is before Jokneam;
The border of their inheritance stretched as far as Sarid. It went up westward to Maralah, reached Dabbesheth, and met the
brook east of Jokneam.
And Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho.
Me-jarkon, and Rakkon, including the territory across from
Joppa.
These are the inheritances which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in
Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.
These are the inheritances that
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at
Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.
And when he that
doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.
When someone flees to one of these cities, stands at the entrance of the city gate, and states his case before its elders, they are to bring him into the city and give him a place to live among them.
Now if the
avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the
manslayer into his hand, because that man killed his
neighbor accidentally without prior
malice.
And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand
before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the
slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled.
He is to stay in that city until he stands trial
before the assembly and until the death of the high priest serving at that time. Then the
manslayer may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”
These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that
whosoever killeth any person at unawares might
flee thither, and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood, until he stood
before the congregation.
These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and foreigners among them, so that
anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there and not die by the hand of the
avenger of blood prior to standing trial
before the assembly.
And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he
sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies
before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had
sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD.
Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
God
forbid that we should
rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is
before his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him
today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God, which stands
before His tabernacle.”
And the LORD your God, he shall
expel them from
before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you.
The LORD your God will
push them out of your way and drive them out
before you, so that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and to this day no one can stand against you.
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from
before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations
before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to
Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves
before God.
Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at
Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel, and they presented themselves
before God.
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from
before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them
before you.
And I sent the
hornet before you, which
drave them out from
before you, even the two kings of the
Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
I sent the
hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings
before you, but not by your own sword or bow.
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And the LORD
drave out from
before us all the people, even the
Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.
And the LORD drove out
before us all the nations, including the
Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because He is our God!”
And Judah went against the
Canaanites that dwelt in
Hebron: (now the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they
slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Judah also marched against the
Canaanites who were living in
Hebron (formerly known as Kiriath-arba), and they struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:
From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
And the house of Joseph sent to
descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city
before was
Luz.)
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from
before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a
snare unto you.
So now I tell you that I will not drive out these people
before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a
snare to you.”
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that
spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand
before their enemies.
Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He delivered them into the hands of those who
plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he
before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him from the hills, and he became their leader.
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out
before thee? So
Barak went down from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone
before you?” So
Barak came down from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
And the LORD
discomfited Sisera, and all his
chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword
before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his
chariot, and fled away on his feet.
And in front of him the LORD routed with the sword Sisera, all his charioteers, and all his army. Sisera abandoned his
chariot and fled on foot.
So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of
Canaan before the children of Israel.
On that day God subdued Jabin king of
Canaan before the Israelites.
The mountains melted from
before the LORD, even that
Sinai from
before the LORD God of Israel.
The mountains
quaked before the LORD, the One of
Sinai,
before the LORD, the God of Israel.
And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that
oppressed you, and
drave them out from
before you, and gave you their land;
I delivered you out of the hands of Egypt and all your oppressors. I drove them out before you and gave you their land.
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it
before thee. And he said, I will
tarry until thou come again.
Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set it before You.” And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”
And
Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take
before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
And
Gideon the son of
Joash returned from battle
before the sun was up,
Thus was
Midian subdued
before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of
Gideon.
In this way
Midian was subdued
before the Israelites and did not raise its head again. So the land had rest for forty years in the days of
Gideon,
And
Abimelech chased him, and he fled
before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
but
Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled
before him. And many Shechemites fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate.
And
Jephthah said unto the elders of
Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD deliver them
before me, shall I be your head?
But
Jephthah asked them, “If you take me back to fight the
Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me, will I really be your leader?”
Then
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and
Jephthah uttered all his words
before the LORD in Mizpeh.
So
Jephthah went with the elders of
Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And
Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at
Mizpah.
So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the
Amorites from
before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the
Amorites from
before His people Israel, should you now possess it?
Wilt not thou possess that which
Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So
whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from
before us, them will we possess.
Do you not possess whatever your god
Chemosh grants you? So also, we possess whatever the LORD our God has granted us.
And he
smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of
Ammon were subdued
before the children of Israel.
With a great blow he
devastated twenty cities from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as
Abel-keramim. So the
Ammonites were subdued
before the Israelites.
And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan
before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of
Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said,
Nay;
The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a
fugitive from Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over,” the Gileadites would ask him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he answered, “No,”
And
Samson’s wife
wept before him, and said, Thou
dost but
hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a
riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
Then
Samson’s wife came to him,
weeping, and said, “You
hate me! You do not really love me! You have
posed to my people a
riddle, but have not explained it to me.” “Look,” he said, “I have not even explained it to my father or mother, so why should I explain it to you?”
And she
wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay
sore upon him: and she told the
riddle to the children of her people.
She
wept the whole seven days of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because she had pressed him so much, he told her the answer. And in turn she explained the
riddle to her people.
And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day
before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not
plowed with my
heifer, ye had not found out my
riddle.
Before sunset on the seventh day, the men of the city said to
Samson: “What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?” So he said to them: “If you had not
plowed with my
heifer, you would not have
solved my
riddle!”
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is
before Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times
before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
Then she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did
before and
shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.
And the priest told them, “Go in peace. The LORD is watching over your journey.”
So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.
Putting their small children, their
livestock, and their possessions in front of them, they turned and departed.
Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, with the land of
Gilead, unto the LORD in Mizpeh.
Then all the Israelites from
Dan to
Beersheba and from the land of
Gilead came out, and the congregation assembled as one man
before the LORD at
Mizpah.
(And the children of Israel went up and
wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)
They went up and
wept before the LORD until evening, inquiring of Him, “Should we again draw near for battle against our brothers the Benjamites?” And the LORD answered, “Go up against them.”
Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and
wept, and sat there
before the LORD, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings
before the LORD.
Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to
Bethel, where they sat
weeping before the LORD. That day they fasted until evening and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings to the LORD.
And
Phinehas, the son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood
before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the LORD said, Go up; for to
morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
and
Phinehas son of
Eleazar, the son of Aaron, served
before it.) The Israelites asked, “Should we again go out to battle against our brothers the Benjamites, or should we stop?” The LORD answered, “Fight, for
tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand.”
And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in
array against Gibeah, as at other times.
On the third day the Israelites went up against the Benjamites and
arrayed themselves against Gibeah as they had done
before.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as
before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the other to Gibeah.
And the children of Benjamin said, They are
smitten down
before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us
flee, and draw them from the city unto the
highways.
“We are defeating them as
before,” said the Benjamites. But the Israelites said, “Let us retreat and draw them away from the city
onto the roads.”
And the LORD
smote Benjamin
before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
The LORD defeated Benjamin in the presence of Israel, and on that day the Israelites slaughtered 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords.
So the children of Benjamin saw that they were
smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.
Then the Benjamites realized they had been defeated. Now the men of Israel had retreated
before Benjamin because they were relying on the
ambush they had set against Gibeah.
And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to
smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are
smitten down
before us, as in the first battle.
the men of Israel would turn in the battle. When the Benjamites had begun to strike them down, killing about thirty men of Israel, they said, “They are defeated before us as in the first battle.”
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.
And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even
before God, and lifted up their voices, and
wept sore;
So the people came to
Bethel and sat there
before God until evening, lifting up their voices and
weeping bitterly.
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly
before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to come up
before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from
Jabesh-
gilead to the assembly.
So they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to come up
before the LORD at
Mizpah?” And, in fact, no one from
Jabesh-
gilead had come to the camp for the assembly.
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
Then Boaz said, “May the LORD
bless you, my daughter. You have shown more kindness now than
before, because you have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor.
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
So she lay down at his feet until morning, but she got up
before anyone else could recognize her. Then Boaz said, “Do not let it be known that a woman came to the
threshing floor.”
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it
before the inhabitants, and
before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it: but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so. But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one but you to
redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he replied.
And it came to pass, as she continued praying
before the LORD, that
Eli marked her mouth.
As
Hannah kept on praying
before the LORD,
Eli watched her mouth.
And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul
before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink, but I have poured out my soul
before the LORD.
