And
Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of
Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art
come against me to fight in my land?
Then
Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the
Ammonites, saying, “What do you have against me that you have
come to fight against my land?”
Then they went along through the wilderness, and
compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of
Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the
Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
Then it shall be, that
whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of
Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
then whatever
comes out the door of my house to
greet me on my
triumphant return from the
Ammonites will belong to the LORD, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
And he
smote them from Aroer, even till thou
come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of
Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
With a great blow he
devastated twenty cities from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as
Abel-keramim. So the
Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites.
And
Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with
timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
And when
Jephthah returned home to
Mizpah, there was his daughter
coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing! She was his only child; he had no son or daughter besides her.
And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her
companions, and
bewailed her
virginity upon the mountains.
“Go,” he said. And he sent her away for two months. So she left with her friends and
mourned her
virginity upon the mountains.
And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye
come up unto me this day, to fight against me?
When I saw that you would not save me, I risked my life and crossed over to the
Ammonites, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you
come today to fight against me?”
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no
razor shall
come on his head: for the child shall be a
Nazarite unto God from the
womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no
razor shall
come over his head, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to God from the
womb, and he will begin the
deliverance of Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
Then
Manoah intreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou
didst send
come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.
Then
Manoah prayed to the LORD, “Please, O Lord, let the man of God You sent us
come to us again to teach us how to raise the boy who is to be born.”
And
Manoah said, Now let thy words
come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?
Then
Manoah asked, “When your words
come to pass, what will be the boy’s rule of life and mission?”
She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
And
Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy name, that when thy sayings
come to pass we may do thee honour?
Then
Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word
comes to pass?”
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
“Why do you ask my name,” said the angel of the LORD, “since it is beyond
comprehension?”
And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
And when the Philistines saw him, they selected thirty men to
accompany him.
But
Samson’s wife was given to his
companion, whom he had used as his friend.
and his wife was given to one of the men who had accompanied him.
And her father said, I
verily thought that thou hadst utterly
hated her; therefore I gave her to thy
companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.
“I was sure that you thoroughly
hated her,” said her father, “so I gave her to one of the men who accompanied you. Is not her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please take her instead.”
Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered,
Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his
companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.
“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded. “It was
Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were told. “For his wife was given to his
companion.” So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death.
And the men of Judah said, Why are ye
come up against us? And they answered, To bind
Samson are we
come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
“Why have you attacked us?” said the men of Judah. The Philistines replied, “We have
come to arrest
Samson and pay him back for what he has done to us.”
And they said unto him, We are
come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And
Samson said unto them,
Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me
yourselves.
But they said to him, “We have
come down to arrest you and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson replied, “
Swear to me that you will not kill me
yourselves.”
And it was told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is
come hither. And they
compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
When the Gazites heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will kill him.”
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not
come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And when
Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying,
Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “
Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And
Micah said unto him, Whence
comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a
Levite of Bethlehemjudah, and I go to
sojourn where I may find a place.
“Where are you from?”
Micah asked him. “I am a
Levite from
Bethlehem in Judah,” he replied, “and I am on my way to settle wherever I can find a place.”
In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.
In those days there was no king in Israel, and the tribe of the Danites was looking for territory to occupy. For up to that time they had not come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not
slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land.
They answered, “
Come on, let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and it is very good. Why would you fail to act? Do not
hesitate to go there and take possession of the land!
When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
When you enter, you will
come to an
unsuspecting people and a
spacious land, for God has delivered it into your hand. It is a place where nothing on earth is lacking.”
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And they
cried unto the children of
Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto
Micah, What aileth thee, that thou
comest with such a
company?
When they called out after them, the Danites turned to face them and said to
Micah, “What is the matter with you that you have called out such a
company?”
And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law,
Comfort thine heart with a
morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart, but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the
damsel’s father said,
Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they
tarried until
afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
On the fifth day, he got up early in the morning to depart, but the
girl’s father said, “Please refresh your heart.” So they waited until late
afternoon and the two of them
ate.
And when they were by
Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master,
Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and
lodge in it.
When they were near
Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Please, let us stop at this Jebusite city and
spend the night here.”
And he said unto his servant,
Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to
lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in
Ramah.
He continued, “
Come, let us try to reach one of these towns to
spend the night in Gibeah or
Ramah.”
And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a
wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said,
Whither goest thou? and whence
comest thou?
When he looked up and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going, and where have you come from?”
And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them,
Nay, my brethren,
nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is
come into mine house, do not this folly.
The owner of the house went out and said to them, “No, my brothers, do not do this wicked thing! After all, this man is a
guest in my house. Do not
commit this
outrage.
And when he was
come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his
concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
When he reached his house, he
picked up a knife, took hold of his
concubine, cut her limb by limb into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout the territory of Israel.
And I took my
concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have
committed lewdness and folly in Israel.
Then I took my
concubine, cut her into pieces, and sent her throughout the land of Israel’s inheritance, because they had
committed a
lewd and disgraceful act in Israel.
And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to
fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they
come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
We will take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to supply provisions for the army when they go to Gibeah in Benjamin to
punish them for the
atrocity they have
committed in Israel.”
And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were
amazed: for they saw that evil was
come upon them.
Then the men of Israel turned back on them, and the men of Benjamin were
terrified when they realized that
disaster had
come upon them.
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.
And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?
“Why, O LORD God of Israel,” they
cried out, “has this happened in Israel?
Today in Israel one tribe is missing!”
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not
come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to
come up before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be put to death.
And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from
Jabesh-
gilead to the assembly.
So they asked, “Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to
come up before the LORD at
Mizpah?” And, in fact, no one from
Jabesh-
gilead had
come to the camp for the assembly.
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and
commanded them, saying, Go and
smite the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
So the congregation sent 12,000 of their most
valiant men and
commanded them: “Go and put to the sword those living in
Jabesh-
gilead, including women and children.
Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
So they commanded the Benjamites: “Go, hide in the vineyards
And see, and, behold, if the daughters of
Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then
come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of
Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
and watch. When you see the daughters of
Shiloh come out to perform their dances, each of you is to
come out of the vineyards, catch for himself a wife from the daughters of
Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren
come unto us to
complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.
When their fathers or brothers
come to us to
complain, we will tell them, ‘Do us a favor by helping them, since we did not get wives for each of them in the war. Since you did not actually give them your daughters, you have no guilt.’”
So they two went until they came to
Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were
come to
Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this
Naomi?
And she went, and came, and
gleaned in the field after the reapers: and her
hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
So
Ruth departed and went out into the field and
gleaned after the harvesters. And she happened to
come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art
come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
The LORD
recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art
come to trust.
May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge.”
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast
comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine
handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
“My lord,” she said, “may I continue to find favor in your eyes, for you have
comforted and spoken kindly to your
maidservant, though I am not like one of your servant girls.”
And Boaz said unto her, At
mealtime come thou
hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy
morsel in the
vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her
parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.
At
mealtime Boaz said to her, “
Come over here; have some bread and dip it into the
vinegar sauce.” So she sat down beside the harvesters, and he offered her
roasted grain, and she
ate and was satisfied and had some left over.
And when she was risen up to
glean, Boaz
commanded his young men, saying, Let her
glean even among the
sheaves, and reproach her not:
When
Ruth got up to
glean, Boaz ordered his young men, “Even if she gathers among the
sheaves, do not
insult her.
Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the
kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.
Meanwhile, Boaz went to the gate and sat down there. Soon the
kinsman-
redeemer of whom he had spoken came along, and Boaz said, “
Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.
And he said unto the
kinsman,
Naomi, that is
come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a
parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s:
And he said to the
kinsman-
redeemer, “
Naomi, who has returned from the land of Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our brother Elimelech.
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is
come into thine house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial: for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was
come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are
weighed.
And the priest’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
or for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would
come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest; for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would
come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
Wherefore
kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have
commanded in my
habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make
yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Why then do you
kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by
fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father’s house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.
Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that no older man will be left in your house.
And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall
come upon thy two sons, on
Hophni and
Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.
And this sign shall
come to you concerning your two sons
Hophni and
Phinehas: They will both die on the same day.
And it shall
come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall
come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will
come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And when the people were
come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD
smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us
fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of
Shiloh unto us, that, when it
cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
When the troops returned to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why has the LORD brought defeat on us before the Philistines
today? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from
Shiloh, so that it may go with us to save us from the hand of our enemies.”
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the
shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great
shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was
come into the camp.
On hearing the noise of the
shout, the Philistines asked, “What is this loud
shouting in the camp of the Hebrews?” And when they realized that the ark of the LORD had entered the camp,
And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is
come into the camp. And they said,
Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us, for nothing like this has happened before.
And when
Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this
tumult? And the man came in
hastily, and told
Eli.
And the man said unto
Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
“I have just
come from the battle,” the man said to
Eli. “I fled from there
today.” “What happened, my son?”
Eli asked.
Now therefore make a new
cart, and take two
milch kine, on which there hath
come no yoke, and
tie the
kine to the
cart, and bring their
calves home from them:
Now, therefore, prepare one new
cart with two milk cows that have never been yoked.
Hitch the cows to the
cart, but take their
calves away and pen them up.
And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD;
come ye down, and
fetch it up to you.
So they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down and take it up with you.”
And he will
appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over
fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to
reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his
chariots.
He will
appoint some for himself as
commanders of thousands and of
fifties, and others to
plow his ground, to
reap his harvest, to make his weapons of war, and to
equip his
chariots.
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
When that day
comes, you will
beg for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”
And when they were
come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him,
Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the
asses, and take thought for us.
When they reached the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant, “
Come, let us go back, or my father will stop
worrying about the
donkeys and start
worrying about us.”
And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith
cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither;
peradventure he can
shew us our way that we should go.
“Look,” said the servant, “in this city there is a man of God who is highly respected; everything he says surely comes to pass. Let us go there now. Perhaps he will tell us which way to go.”
(Formerly in Israel, a man on his way to inquire of God would say, “
Come, let us go to the
seer.” For the prophet of
today was formerly called the
seer.)
Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
“Good,” said Saul to his servant. “Come, let us go.” So they set out for the city where the man of God was.
And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the
seer here?
And as they were
climbing the hill to the city, they met some young women
coming out to draw water and asked, “Is the
seer here?”
And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make
haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
“
Yes, he is
ahead of you,” they answered. “
Hurry now, for
today he has
come to the city because the people have a sacrifice on the high place.
As soon as ye be
come into the city, ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he
come, because he
doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he
comes, because he must
bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
So Saul and his servant went up toward the city, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
To
morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is
come unto me.
“At this time
tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them from the hand of the Philistines. For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has
come to Me.”
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
And after they had come down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof of his house.
Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt
come to the plain of
Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to
Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a
bottle of wine:
Then you will go on from there until you
come to the Oak of
Tabor. Three men going up to God at
Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine.
After that thou shalt
come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall
come to pass, when thou art
come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a
company of prophets
coming down from the high place with a
psaltery, and a
tabret, and a pipe, and a
harp, before them; and they shall
prophesy:
After that you will
come to Gibeah of God, where the Philistines have an outpost. As you approach the city, you will meet a group of prophets
coming down from the high place, preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be
prophesying.
And the Spirit of the LORD will
come upon thee, and thou shalt
prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.
Then the Spirit of the LORD will
rush upon you, and you will
prophesy with them; and you will be transformed into a different person.
And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.
When these signs have come, do as the occasion demands, for God is with you.
And thou shalt go down before me to
Gilgal; and, behold, I will
come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou
tarry, till I
come to thee, and
shew thee what thou shalt do.
And you shall go before me to
Gilgal, and surely I will
come to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Wait seven days until I
come to you and show you what you are to do.”
And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a
company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he
prophesied among them.
When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him. Then the Spirit of God
rushed upon him, and he
prophesied along with them.
And it came to pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he
prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is
come unto the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
All those who had formerly known Saul and saw him
prophesying with the prophets asked one another, “What has happened to the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
Thus Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was selected.
When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to
come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of
Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
Then he had the tribe of Benjamin
come forward by its clans, and the clan of Matri was selected. Finally, Saul son of
Kish was selected. But when they looked for him, they could not find him.
Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet
come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath
hid himself among the stuff.
So again they inquired of the LORD, “Has the man
come here yet?” And the LORD replied, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the
baggage.”
And the elders of
Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will
come out to thee.
“Hold off for seven days,” replied the elders of
Jabesh, “and let us send messengers throughout Israel. If there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, To
morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of
Jabesh; and they were
glad.
Therefore the men of
Jabesh said, To
morrow we will
come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
Then the men of
Jabesh said to Nahash, “
Tomorrow we will
come out, and you can do with us whatever seems good to you.”
