defile himself for a

Neither shall he go in to any
dead body, nor
defile himself for his father, or for his mother;

dead body; he must not
defile himself, even for his father or mother.
What man
soever of the seed of Aaron is a

torn with beasts, he shall not eat to
defile himself
therewith: I am the LORD.

anyone who has a bodily discharge, and

ceremonially clean is to take some

smite him with throwing a stone,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

deadly size, and he strikes and kills another, he is a murderer; the murderer must surely be put to death.
Or if he
smite him with an hand weapon of wood,
wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
Now when all the fighting men among the people had died,
Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut
yourselves, nor make any
baldness between your eyes for the
dead.
You are sons of the LORD your God; do not cut
yourselves or
shave your foreheads on behalf of the
dead,
And the
swine, because it divideth the
hoof, yet cheweth not the
cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their
dead carcase.
Although they
chew the
cud, they do not have a divided
hoof. They are unclean for you, as well as the pig; though it has a divided
hoof, it does not
chew the
cud. It is unclean for you. You must not eat its meat or touch its
carcass.

Lest the
avenger of the blood pursue the
slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and
slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he
hated him not in time past.
Otherwise, the
avenger of blood might pursue the
manslayer in a
rage, overtake him if the distance is great, and strike him
dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend any
harm.
If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband’s brother unto her.
When brothers dwell together and one of them dies without a son, the widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother is to take her as his wife and
fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for her.

firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is

blotted out from Israel.
I have not eaten thereof in my
mourning, neither have I taken away ought thereof for any unclean use, nor given ought thereof for the
dead: but I have
hearkened to the voice of the LORD my God, and have done according to all that thou hast commanded me.
I have not eaten any of the sacred portion while in
mourning, or removed any of it while unclean, or offered any of it for the
dead. I have obeyed the LORD my God; I have done everything You commanded me.

And it came to pass, when the judge was
dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And they
tarried till they were
ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down
dead on the earth.
So they waited until they became
worried and saw that he had still not opened the doors of the upper room. Then they took the key and opened the doors—and there was their lord lying
dead on the floor.

When
Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to
greet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man you are seeking.” So he went in with her, and there lay Sisera
dead, with a tent
peg through his temple.

Gideon was
dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a

And as soon as

prostituted themselves with the Baals, and they set up
Baal-berith as their god.

dead, they all went home.

slew many of us.
And when the people saw him, they praised their god, saying: “Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy who destroyed our land and multiplied our dead.”
And
Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the
dead which he
slew at his death were more than they which he
slew in his life.
Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.” Then he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people in it. So in his death he killed more than he had killed in his life.
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my

abused my
concubine, and she died.
And
Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the
dead, and with me.
Then
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go back, each of you to your mother’s home. May the LORD show you loving devotion, as you have shown to your
dead and to me.
And
Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the
dead. And
Naomi said unto her, The man is near of
kin unto us, one of our next
kinsmen.
Then
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the LORD, who has not withdrawn His kindness from the living or the
dead.”
Naomi continued, “The man is a close relative. He is one of our
kinsman-redeemers.”
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of
Naomi, thou must
buy it also of
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of the
dead, to raise up the name of the
dead upon his inheritance.
Then Boaz said, “On the day you
buy the land from
Naomi and also from
Ruth the
Moabitess, you must also acquire the widow of the deceased in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance.”
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the
dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the
dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
And the
messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also,
Hophni and
Phinehas, are
dead, and the ark of God is taken.
The
messenger answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons,
Hophni and
Phinehas, are both
dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were
dead, she bowed herself and
travailed; for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth, for her labor pains overtook her.
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people: for there was a
deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!” For a
deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of God was heavy upon it.
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the
Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the
sheath thereof, and
slew him, and cut off his head
therewith. And when the Philistines saw their
champion was
dead, they fled.
David ran and stood over him. He
grabbed the
Philistine’s sword and pulled it from its
sheath and killed him; and he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was
dead, they turned and ran.

slay him in the morning: and Michal David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to

warned him, “If you do not run for your life
tonight,
tomorrow you will be
dead!”

dost thou pursue? after a
dead dog, after a
flea.
Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A
dead dog? A
flea?
And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD
smote Nabal, that he died.
About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
And when David heard that Nabal was
dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath
pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with
Abigail, to take her to him to wife.
On hearing that Nabal was
dead, David said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has
upheld my cause against the reproach of Nabal and has restrained His servant from evil. For the LORD has brought the wickedness of Nabal down upon his own head.” Then David sent word to
Abigail, asking for her in marriage.
Now Samuel was
dead, and all Israel had
lamented him, and buried him in
Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.
Now by this time Samuel had died, and all Israel had
mourned for him and buried him in
Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land.
And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.

dead, he too fell on his own sword and died with him.
And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were
dead, they
forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount
Gilboa.
The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the
dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount
Gilboa.
And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and
dead; and Saul and
Jonathan his son are
dead also.
“What was the outcome?” David asked. “Please tell me.” “The troops fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his son
Jonathan are also
dead.”
And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and
Jonathan his son be
dead?
Then David asked the young man who had brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his son
Jonathan are
dead?”
Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye
valiant: for your master Saul is
dead, and also the house of Judah have
anointed me king over them.
Now then, be strong and
courageous, for though Saul your lord is
dead, the house of Judah has
anointed me as their king.”
Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore
Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where
Asahel fell down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell
dead on the spot. And every man
paused when he came to the place where
Asahel had fallen and died.
And when Saul’s son heard that
Abner was
dead in
Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled.
Now when
Ish-bosheth son of Saul heard that
Abner had died in
Hebron, he lost courage, and all Israel was dismayed.
When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is
dead, thinking to have brought good
tidings, I took hold of him, and
slew him in
Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his
tidings:
when someone told me, ‘Look, Saul is
dead,’ and thought he was a bearer of good news, I seized him and put him to death at
Ziklag. That was his reward for his news!
And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog like me?”
Who
smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a
millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye
nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is
dead also.
Who was the one to strike
Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who dropped an upper
millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If so, then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is
dead as well.’”
And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s servants were killed. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.”

dead, she
mourned for her husband.

dead, she
mourned for him.
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was
dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not
hearken unto our voice: how will he then
vex himself, if we tell him that the child is
dead?
On the seventh day the child died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was
dead, for they said, “Look, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not
listen to us. So how can we tell him the child is
dead? He may even
harm himself.”
But when David saw that his servants
whispered, David perceived that the child was
dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child
dead? And they said, He is
dead.
When David saw that his servants were
whispering to one another, he perceived that the child was
dead. So he asked his servants, “Is the child
dead?” “He is
dead,” they replied.
Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou
didst fast and
weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was
dead, thou
didst rise and eat bread.
“What is this you have done?” his servants asked. “While the child was alive, you fasted and
wept, but when he died, you got up and
ate.”
But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is
dead: for by the appointment of
Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord must not think they have killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is
dead. In fact,
Absalom has
planned this since the day Amnon
violated his sister Tamar.
Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king’s sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead.
So now, my lord the king, do not take to heart the report that all the sons of the king are dead. Only Amnon is dead.”
And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto
Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was
dead.
And King David longed to go to
Absalom, for he had been
consoled over Amnon’s death.
So
Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a
mourner; put on clothes for
mourning and do not
anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has
mourned for the
dead a long time.
