today. You may do it another day, but you must not do so
today, because the king’s son is
dead.”
In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if
Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, then it had pleased thee well.
You love those who
hate you and
hate those who love you! For you have made it clear
today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know
today that if
Absalom were alive and all of us were
dead, it would have pleased you!
And
Absalom, whom we
anointed over us, is
dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back?
But
Absalom, the man we
anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about restoring the king?”
For all of my father’s house were but
dead men before my lord the king: yet
didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the king?
For all the house of my
grandfather deserves death from my lord the king, yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right, then, do I have to keep appealing to the king?”
But
Amasa took no
heed to the sword that was in
Joab’s hand: so he

Abishai his brother pursued after
Sheba the son of Bichri.

Nay; but the living is my son, and the
dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the

dead one is your son.” But the first woman insisted, “No, the
dead one is yours and the living one is mine.” So they

Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is,

The
dead tremble— those beneath the waters and those who dwell in them.

He has prepared His deadly weapons; He ordains His arrows with fire.
From the wicked that
oppress me, from my
deadly enemies, who compass me about.
I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.
I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind. I am like a broken vessel.
At thy
rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the
chariot and horse are cast into a
dead sleep.
At Your
rebuke, O God of Jacob, both horse and rider lie
stunned.
The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
They have given the corpses of Your servants as food to the birds of the air, the flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.
Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to
bury them.
They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there is no one to
bury the

Free among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cut off from thy hand.
I am
forsaken among the
dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, whom You remember no more, who are cut off from Your care.
Wilt thou
shew wonders to the
dead? shall the
dead arise and praise thee?
Selah.
Do You work wonders for the
dead? Do departed spirits rise up to praise You?
Selah Surely He will deliver you from the
snare of the fowler, and from the
deadly plague.
They joined themselves also unto
Baal-peor, and
ate the sacrifices of the

heaping up the
dead; He will
crush the leaders far and wide.

It is not the dead who praise the LORD, nor any who descend into silence.
For the enemy hath
persecuted my soul; he hath
smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long
dead.
For the enemy has pursued my soul,
crushing my life to the ground, making me dwell in darkness like those long since
dead.
It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the
hurtful sword.
to Him who gives victory to kings, who frees His servant David from the deadly sword.
For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
For her house sinks down to death, and her tracks to the departed spirits.
But he knoweth not that the
dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of
hell.
But they do not know that the
dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of
Sheol.
The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity
tossed to and
fro of them that seek death.

vanishing mist, a
deadly pursuit.
The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
The man who strays from the path of understanding will rest in the assembly of the dead.
As a
mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,
Like a
madman shooting firebrands and
deadly arrows,
Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
So I
admired the
dead, who had already died, above the living, who are still alive.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all:
yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the
dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive, and afterward they join the
dead.
For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
There is hope, however, for
anyone who is among the living; for even a live dog is better than a
dead lion.
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.
As
dead flies bring a
stench to the
perfumer’s oil, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that
peep, and that
mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the
dead?
When men tell you to
consult the spirits of the
dead and the spiritists who
whisper and
mutter, shouldn’t a people
consult their God instead? Why
consult the
dead on behalf of the living?
Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the
dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
Sheol beneath is eager to meet you upon your arrival. It stirs the spirits of the
dead to
greet you— all the rulers of the earth. It makes all the kings of the nations rise from their thrones.
And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be
emptied out from among them, and I will
frustrate their plans, so that they will resort to idols and spirits of the
dead, to mediums and spiritists.
Thou that art full of stirs, a
tumultuous city, a
joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor
dead in battle.
O city of
commotion, O town of
revelry? Your slain did not die by the sword, nor were they killed in battle.
They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.
The
dead will not live; the departed spirits will not rise. Therefore You have punished and destroyed them; You have
wiped out all memory of them.
Thy
dead men shall live, together with my
dead body shall they arise.
Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy
dew is as the
dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the
dead.
Your
dead will live; their bodies will rise.
Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your
dew is like the
dew of the morning, and the earth will bring forth her
dead.
Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and
smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and
fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all
dead corpses.
Then the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 men in the camp of the Assyrians. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies!
Like the blind, we feel our way along the wall,
groping like those without eyes. We
stumble at
midday as in the
twilight; among the vigorous we are like the
dead.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called
Tophet, nor the valley of the son of
Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall
bury in
Tophet, till there be no place.
So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth and the Valley of
Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. For they will
bury the
dead in Topheth until there is no more room.
Their tongue is as an
arrow shot out; it speaketh
deceit: one speaketh
peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.
Their tongues are
deadly arrows; they speak
deception. With his mouth a man speaks peace to his
neighbor, but in his heart he sets a
trap for him.
They shall die of
grievous deaths; they shall not be
lamented; neither shall they be buried; but they shall be as dung upon the face of the earth: and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their carcases shall be meat for the fowls of heaven, and for the beasts of the earth.
“They will die from
deadly diseases. They will not be
mourned or buried, but will lie like dung on the ground. They will be finished off by sword and famine, and their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and beasts of the earth.”
Neither shall men
tear themselves for them in
mourning, to comfort them for the
dead; neither shall men give them the cup of
consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.
No food will be offered to comfort those who
mourn the
dead; not even a cup of
consolation will be given for the loss of a father or mother.
Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to
slay me:
forgive not their iniquity, neither
blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
But You, O LORD, know all their
deadly plots against me. Do not
wipe out their guilt or
blot out their sin from Your sight. Let them be overthrown before You; deal with them in the time of Your anger.
And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a
potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall
bury them in
Tophet, till there be no place to
bury.
and you are to
proclaim to them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will
shatter this nation and this city, like one
shatters a
potter’s
jar that can never again be repaired. They will
bury the
dead in Topheth until there is no more room to
bury them.
Weep ye not for the
dead, neither
bemoan him: but
weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.
Do not
weep for the
dead king; do not
mourn his loss.
Weep bitterly for the one who is exiled, for he will never return to see his native land.
And they
fetched forth Urijah out of Egypt, and brought him unto
Jehoiakim the king; who
slew him with the sword, and cast his
dead body into the graves of the common people.
They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King
Jehoiakim, who had him put to the sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people.
And the whole valley of the
dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the
brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy unto the LORD; it shall not be
plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.
The whole valley of the
dead bodies and ashes, and all the fields as far as the Kidron Valley, to the corner of the Horse Gate to the east, will be holy to the LORD. It will never again be uprooted or
demolished.”
They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the
dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my
fury, and for all whose wickedness I have
hid my face from this city.
The Chaldeans are coming to fight and to fill those places with the corpses of the men I will strike down in My anger and in My wrath. I have hidden My face from this city because of all its wickedness.
I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.
I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who seek their lives. Their corpses will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.
Therefore thus saith the LORD of
Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his
dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the
frost.
Therefore this is what the LORD says about
Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no one to sit on David’s throne, and his body will be thrown out and exposed to heat by day and
frost by night.
Now the pit wherein
Ishmael had cast all the
dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was it which
Asa the king had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel: and
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain.
Now the
cistern into which
Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah was a large one that King
Asa had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.
He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
He has made me dwell in darkness like those dead for ages.
Then said I,
Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul hath not been
polluted: for from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dieth of itself, or is
torn in pieces; neither came there
abominable flesh into my mouth.
“
Ah, Lord GOD,” I said, “I have never
defiled myself. From my youth until now I have not eaten anything found
dead or
mauled by wild beasts. No unclean meat has ever entered my mouth.”
When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread:
When I shower you with the
deadly arrows of famine and destruction that I will send to destroy you, I will
intensify the famine against you and cut off your supply of food.
And I will lay the
dead carcases of the children of Israel before their idols; and I will
scatter your bones round about your altars.
I will lay the corpses of the Israelites before their idols and
scatter your bones around your altars.
Ye have multiplied your slain in this city, and ye have filled the streets thereof with the slain.
You have multiplied those you killed in this city and filled its streets with the dead.
Forbear to cry, make no
mourning for the
dead, bind the
tire of thine head upon thee, and put on thy
shoes upon thy feet, and cover not thy lips, and eat not the bread of men.
Groan quietly; do not
mourn for the
dead. Put on your
turban and
strap your
sandals on your feet; do not cover your lips or eat the bread of mourners.”
And I will
strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and put my sword in his hand: but I will break Pharaoh’s arms, and he shall
groan before him with the groanings of a
deadly wounded man.
I will
strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king and place My sword in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, who will
groan before him like a
mortally wounded man.
And they shall come at no
dead person to
defile themselves: but for father, or for mother, or for son, or for daughter, for brother, or for sister that hath had no husband, they may
defile themselves.
A priest must not
defile himself by going near a
dead person. However, for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister, he may do so,
The priests shall not eat of any thing that is
dead of itself, or
torn, whether it be fowl or beast.
The priests may not eat any bird or animal found
dead or
torn by wild beasts.
And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.
“In that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “the songs of the temple will turn to
wailing. Many will be the corpses,
strewn in silence everywhere!”
The
horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the
glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they
stumble upon their corpses:
