Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
See, I have
allotted as an inheritance to your tribes these remaining nations, including all the nations I have already cut off,
from the Jordan westward to the Great Sea.
And the LORD your God, he shall
expel them
from before you, and drive them
from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you.
The LORD your God will
push them out of your way and drive them out before you, so that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
Be ye therefore very
courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside
therefrom to the right hand or to the left;
Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left.
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and to this day no one can stand against you.
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations
from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish
from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish
from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
But just as every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come to pass, likewise the LORD will bring upon you the
calamity He has threatened, until He has destroyed you
from this good land He has given you.
When ye have
transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed
yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be
kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly
from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
If you
transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish
from this good land He has given you.”
And I took your father Abraham
from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham
from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them
from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
But I would not
hearken unto
Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
but I would not
listen to
Balaam. So he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you
from his hand.
And I sent the
hornet before you, which
drave them out
from before you, even the two kings of the
Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
I sent the
hornet ahead of you, and it drove out the two Amorite kings before you, but not by your own sword or bow.
And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.
So I gave you a land on which you did not
toil and cities that you did not build, and now you live in them and eat
from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’
And the people answered and said, God
forbid that we should
forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
The people replied, “Far be it
from us to
forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt,
from the house of
bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed:
For the LORD our God brought us and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and performed these great signs before our eyes. He also protected us throughout our journey and among all the nations through which we traveled.
And the LORD
drave out
from before us all the people, even the
Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God.
And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the
Amorites who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because He is our God!”
And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in
Shechem, in a
parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of
Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
And the bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up out of Egypt, were buried at
Shechem in the plot of land that Jacob had purchased
from the sons of Hamor,
Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver. So it became an inheritance for Joseph’s descendants.
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:
From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted
from off her
ass; and
Caleb said unto her, What
wilt thou?
One day Acsah came to Othniel and urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her
donkey,
Caleb asked her, “What do you desire?”
And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah
from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near
Arad. They went to live among the people.
And the coast of the
Amorites was
from the going up to Akrabbim,
from the rock, and upward.
And the border of the
Amorites extended
from the
Ascent of Akrabbim to Sela and beyond.
And an angel of the LORD came up
from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I
sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.
Now the angel of the LORD went up
from Gilgal to Bochim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I had promised to your fathers, and I said, ‘I will never break My covenant with you,
Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out
from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a
snare unto you.
So now I tell you that I will not drive out these people before you; they will be thorns in your sides, and their gods will be a
snare to you.”
Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that
spoiled them.
Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them
from the hands of those who
plundered them.
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned
from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it
repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and
vexed them.
Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites, He was with that judge and saved them
from the hands of their enemies while the judge was still alive; for the LORD was moved to
pity by their
groaning under those who
oppressed them and
afflicted them.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not
from their own doings, nor
from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died:
I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.
But he himself turned again
from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out
from him.
But upon reaching the idols near
Gilgal, he himself turned back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him.
And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Then Ehud approached him while he was sitting alone in the coolness of his upper room. “I have a word from God for you,” Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.
And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the
dagger from his right
thigh, and thrust it into his
belly:
And Ehud reached with his left hand, pulled the sword
from his right
thigh, and
plunged it into
Eglon’s
belly.
And the
haft also went in after the
blade; and the fat closed upon the
blade, so that he could not draw the
dagger out of his
belly; and the
dirt came out.
And it came to pass, when he was come, that he
blew a
trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him
from the mount, and he before them.
On arriving in Seirah, he
blew the ram’s horn throughout the hill country of Ephraim. The Israelites came down with him
from the hills, and he became their leader.
And she sent and called
Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-
naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount
Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of
Naphtali and of the children of
Zebulun?
She summoned
Barak son of Abinoam
from Kedesh in
Naphtali and said to him, “Surely the LORD, the God of Israel, is commanding you: ‘Go and march to Mount
Tabor, taking with you ten thousand men of
Naphtali and
Zebulun.
Now
Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself
from the
Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh.
Now
Heber the Kenite had moved away
from the
Kenites, the descendants of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent by the great tree of Zaanannim, which was near Kedesh.
And Sisera gathered together all his
chariots, even nine hundred
chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him,
from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of
Kishon.
he summoned all nine hundred of his iron
chariots and all the men with him,
from Harosheth-hagoyim to the River
Kishon.
And
Deborah said unto
Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So
Barak went down
from mount
Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
Then
Deborah said to
Barak, “Arise, for this is the day that the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the LORD gone before you?” So
Barak came down
from Mount
Tabor with ten thousand men following him.
Then Jael
Heber’s wife took a
nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and
smote the
nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast
asleep and
weary. So he died.
But as he lay sleeping
from exhaustion,
Heber’s wife Jael took a tent
peg,
grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She drove the
peg through his temple and into the ground, and he died.
LORD, when thou wentest out of
Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of
Edom, the earth
trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.
O LORD, when You went out
from Seir, when You marched
from the land of
Edom, the earth
trembled, the heavens poured out rain, and the clouds poured down water.
The mountains melted
from before the LORD, even that
Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.
The mountains
quaked before the LORD, the One of
Sinai, before the LORD, the God of Israel.
They that are delivered
from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they
rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.
the voices of the singers at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates:
Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of
Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
Some came
from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people after you. The commanders came down
from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff
from Zebulun.
They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.
From the heavens the stars fought; from their courses they fought against Sisera.
That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up
from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of
bondage;
He sent them a prophet, who told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that
oppressed you, and
drave them out
from before you, and gave you their land;
I delivered you out of the hands of Egypt and all your oppressors. I drove them out before you and gave you their land.
And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that
pertained unto
Joash the Abi-ezrite: and his son
Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it
from the Midianites.
Then the angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to
Joash the Abiezrite, where his son
Gideon was
threshing wheat in a winepress to hide it
from the Midianites.
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up
from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel
from the hand of
Midian. Am I not sending you?”
Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will
tarry until thou come again.
Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set it before You.” And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”
Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the
unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the
unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.
Then the angel of the LORD extended the
tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the
unleavened bread. And fire
flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the
unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD
vanished from his sight.
Now therefore go to,
proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early
from mount
Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
Now, therefore,
proclaim in the hearing of the people: ‘
Whoever is fearful and
trembling may turn back and leave Mount
Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned back, but ten thousand remained.
So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the water with their tongues like a dog
from those who
kneel to drink.”
When I blow with a
trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the
trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of
Gideon.
When I and all who are with me blow our horns, then you are also to blow your horns
from all around the camp and
shout, ‘For the LORD and for
Gideon!’”
And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of
Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all
Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
Then the men of Israel were called out
from Naphtali, Asher, and all
Manasseh, and they pursued the Midianites.
And he went up thence to Penuel, and spake unto them likewise: and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him.
From there he went up to Penuel and asked the same
from them, but the men of Penuel gave the same
response as the men of Succoth.
And
Gideon the son of
Joash returned
from battle before the sun was up,
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man is, so is his strength. And
Gideon arose, and
slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that were on their camels’ necks.
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, “Get up and kill us
yourself, for as the man is, so is his strength.” So
Gideon got up and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and he took the
crescent ornaments
from the necks of their camels.
Then the men of Israel said unto
Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us
from the hand of
Midian.
Then the Israelites said to
Gideon, “Rule over us—you and your son and grandson—for you have saved us
from the hand of
Midian.”
And
Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were
Ishmaelites.)
Then he added, “Let me make a request of you, that each of you give me an
earring from his
plunder.” (For the enemies had gold earrings because they were
Ishmaelites.)
And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
“We will give them
gladly,” they replied. So they spread out a garment, and each man threw an
earring from his
plunder onto it.
And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple
raiment that was on the kings of
Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels’ necks.
The weight of the gold earrings he had requested was 1,700 shekels, in addition to the
crescent ornaments, the pendants, the purple garments of the kings of
Midian, and the chains
from the necks of their camels.
And
Gideon made an
ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a
whoring after it: which thing became a
snare unto
Gideon, and to his house.
From all this
Gideon made an
ephod, which he placed in Ophrah, his hometown. But soon all Israel
prostituted themselves by worshiping it there, and it became a
snare to
Gideon and his household.
And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
The Israelites failed to remember the LORD their God who had delivered them from the hands of all their enemies on every side.
So they gave him seventy shekels of silver
from the temple of
Baal-berith, with which
Abimelech hired some worthless and
reckless men to follow him.
(For my father fought for you, and
adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of
Midian:
for my father fought for you and risked his life to deliver you
from the hand of
Midian,
And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and
trode the grapes, and made
merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and
cursed Abimelech.
And after they had gone out into the fields, gathered grapes
from their vineyards, and
trodden them, they held a festival and went into the house of their god; and as they
ate and
drank, they
cursed Abimelech.
And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and
Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him,
from lying in wait.
Now Gaal son of Ebed went out and stood at the entrance of the city gate just as
Abimelech and his men came out
from their hiding places.
And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountains!” But Zebul replied, “The shadows of the mountains look like men to you.”
And Gaal spake again and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
Then Gaal spoke up again, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming by way of the Diviners’ Oak.”
And
Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and
Abimelech took an
axe in his hand, and cut down a
bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make
haste, and do as I have done.
he and all his men went up to Mount Zalmon.
Abimelech took his
axe in his hand and cut a branch
from the trees, which he lifted to his shoulder, saying to his men, “
Hurry and do what you have seen me do.”
And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you
from the Egyptians, and
from the
Amorites,
from the children of
Ammon, and
from the Philistines?
The Zidonians also, and the
Amalekites, and the Maonites, did
oppress you; and ye
cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand.
And they put away the strange gods
from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was
grieved for the misery of Israel.
So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD, and He could no longer bear the misery of Israel.
Then
Jephthah fled
from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of
Tob: and there were gathered vain men to
Jephthah, and went out with him.
So
Jephthah fled
from his brothers and settled in the land of
Tob, where worthless men gathered around him and traveled with him.
And it was so, that when the children of
Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of
Gilead went to
fetch Jephthah out of the land of
Tob:
and made war with them, the elders of
Gilead went to get
Jephthah from the land of
Tob.
And
Jephthah said unto the elders of
Gilead, Did not ye
hate me, and
expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
Jephthah replied to the elders of
Gilead, “Did you not
hate me and
expel me
from my father’s house? Why then have you come to me now, when you are in distress?”
And the king of the children of
Ammon answered unto the messengers of
Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt,
from Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again
peaceably.
The king of the
Ammonites answered
Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they seized my land,
from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it
peaceably.”
But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.
And they possessed all the coasts of the
Amorites,
from Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and
from the wilderness even unto Jordan.
seizing all the land
from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and
from the wilderness to the Jordan.
So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the
Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
Now since the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the
Amorites from before His people Israel, should you now possess it?
Wilt not thou possess that which
Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So
whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out
from before us, them will we possess.
Do you not possess whatever your god
Chemosh grants you? So also, we possess whatever the LORD our God has granted us.
Then it shall be, that
whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace
from the children of
Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
then whatever comes out the door of my house to
greet me on my
triumphant return
from the
Ammonites will belong to the LORD, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.”
And he
smote them
from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of
Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
With a great blow he
devastated twenty cities
from Aroer to the vicinity of Minnith, as far as
Abel-keramim. So the
Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites.
And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of
Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said,
Nay;
The Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan leading to Ephraim, and whenever a
fugitive from Ephraim would say, “Let me cross over,” the Gileadites would ask him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” If he answered, “No,”
And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
He had thirty sons, as well as thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage to men outside his clan; and for his sons he brought back thirty wives from elsewhere. Ibzan judged Israel seven years.
And after him Abdon the son of
Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.
After Elon, Abdon son of
Hillel,
from Pirathon, judged Israel.
And Abdon the son of
Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the
Amalekites.
Then Abdon son of
Hillel,
from Pirathon, died, and he was buried at Pirathon in Ephraim, in the hill country of the
Amalekites.
And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was
Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not.
Now there was a man
from Zorah named
Manoah,
from the clan of the Danites, whose wife was barren and had no children.
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no
razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a
Nazarite unto God
from the
womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no
razor shall come over his head, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to God
from the
womb, and he will begin the
deliverance of Israel
from the hand of the Philistines.”
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and told her husband, “A man of God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he came
from, and he did not tell me his name.
But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a
Nazarite to God
from the
womb to the day of his death.
But he said to me, ‘Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to God
from the
womb until the day of his death.’”
She may not eat of any thing that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing: all that I commanded her let her observe.
She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.”
For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven
from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And
Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground.
When the flame went up
from the altar to the sky, the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame. When
Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell facedown to the ground.
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
(Now his father and mother did not know this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.)
And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the
carcase of the lion.
So he
scooped some honey into his hands and
ate it as he went along. And when he returned to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they
ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey
from the lion’s
carcass.
And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
“No,” they answered, “we will not kill you, but we will
tie you up securely and hand you over to them.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up
from the rock.
And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines
shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed
from off his hands.
When
Samson arrived in Lehi, the Philistines came out
shouting against him. And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him. The ropes on his arms became like burnt flax, and the bonds broke loose
from his hands.
