Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
“I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will take
hold of your hand. I will keep you and
appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations,
“I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet and restrained. But now I will
groan like a woman in labor; I will at once
gasp and
pant.
I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth;
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not
hold them back!’ Bring My sons from
afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth—
Thus saith the LORD to his
anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have
holden, to
subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His
anointed, whose right hand I have
grasped to
subdue nations before him, to disarm kings, to open the doors before him, so that the gates will not be shut:
Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations:
spare not,
lengthen thy cords, and
strengthen thy stakes;
“
Enlarge the site of your tent, stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do not
hold back.
Lengthen your ropes and drive your stakes in deep.
Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth
hold on it; that keepeth the sabbath from
polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil.
Blessed is the man who does this, and the son of man who
holds it fast, who keeps the Sabbath without
profaning it and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
For this is what the LORD says: “To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, who choose what pleases Me and hold fast to My covenant—
Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from
polluting it, and taketh
hold of my covenant;
And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD to minister to Him, to love the name of the LORD, and to be His servants— all who keep the Sabbath without
profaning it and who
hold fast to My covenant—
“Cry
aloud, do not
hold back! Raise your voice like a ram’s horn. Declare to My people their
transgression and to the house of Jacob their sins.
For
Zion’s sake will I not
hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.
For
Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep still, until her righteousness shines like a bright light, her salvation like a
blazing torch.
I have set
watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never
hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,
On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have posted
watchmen; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD shall take no rest for
yourselves,
And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take
hold of thee: for thou hast
hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our
iniquities.
No one calls on Your name or strives to take hold of You. For You have hidden Your face from us and delivered us into the hand of our iniquity.
After all this, O LORD, will You restrain
Yourself? Will You keep silent and
afflict us beyond measure?
For my people have committed two evils; they have
forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and
hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can
hold no water.
“For My people have committed two evils: They have
forsaken Me, the fountain of living water, and they have
dug their own cisterns— broken cisterns that cannot
hold water.
My
bowels, my
bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot
hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the
trump, the
alarm of war.
My
anguish, my
anguish! I
writhe in pain! Oh, the pain in my chest! My heart pounds within me; I cannot be silent. For I have heard the sound of the horn, the
alarm of battle.
Therefore I am full of the
fury of the LORD; I am
weary with
holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.
But I am full of the LORD’s wrath; I am
tired of
holding it back. “Pour it out on the children in the street, and on the young men gathered together. For both husband and wife will be captured, the old and the very old alike.
They shall lay
hold on bow and
spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they
ride upon horses, set in
array as men for war against thee, O daughter of
Zion.
They
grasp the bow and
spear; they are cruel and
merciless. Their voice roars like the sea, and they
ride upon horses, lined up like men in formation against you, O Daughter of
Zion.”
We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble:
anguish hath taken
hold of us, and pain, as of a woman in
travail.
We have heard the report; our hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped us, pain like that of a woman in labor.
Why then is this people of Jerusalem
slidden back by a perpetual
backsliding? they
hold fast
deceit, they refuse to return.
Why then have these people turned away? Why does Jerusalem always turn away? They
cling to
deceit; they refuse to return.
For the
hurt of the daughter of my people am I
hurt; I am black;
astonishment hath taken
hold on me.
For the brokenness of the daughter of my people I am
crushed. I
mourn;
horror has gripped me.
Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was
weary with
forbearing, and I could not stay.
If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,” His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become
weary of
holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
That every man should let his
manservant, and every man his
maidservant, being an Hebrew or an
Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a
Jew his brother.
that each man should free his Hebrew slaves, both male and female, and no one should
hold his fellow
Jew in
bondage.
Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his
manservant, and every one his
maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.
So all the officials and all the people who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free their menservants and maidservants and no longer
hold them in
bondage. They obeyed and released them,
For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of
vengeance, that he may
avenge him of his
adversaries: and the sword shall
devour, and it shall be
satiate and made
drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.
For that day belongs to the Lord GOD of Hosts, a day of
vengeance against His foes. The sword will
devour until it is satisfied, until it is
quenched with their blood. For the Lord GOD of Hosts will
hold a sacrifice in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.
Thou daughter that
dost inhabit Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in
thirst; for the
spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong
holds.
Come down from your glory; sit on
parched ground, O daughter dwelling in Dibon, for the destroyer of Moab has come against you; he has destroyed your fortresses.
Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Kirioth has been taken, and the strongholds seized. In that day the heart of Moab’s warriors will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
Thy terribleness hath
deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that
holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.
The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have
deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks, O occupiers of the mountain summit. Though you
elevate your nest like the eagle, even from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.
Declare ye among the nations, and
publish, and set up a standard;
publish, and
conceal not: say, Babylon is taken,
Bel is confounded, Merodach is broken in pieces; her idols are confounded, her images are broken in pieces.
“
Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a
banner and
proclaim it;
hold nothing back when you say, ‘Babylon is captured;
Bel is put to shame; Marduk is
shattered, her images are disgraced, her idols are broken in pieces.’
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were
oppressed together: and all that took them
captives held them fast; they refused to let them go.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “The sons of Israel are
oppressed, and the sons of Judah as well. All their captors
hold them fast, refusing to release them.
They shall
hold the bow and the
lance: they are cruel, and will not
shew mercy: their voice shall
roar like the sea, and they shall
ride upon horses, every one put in
array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon.
They
grasp the bow and
spear; they are cruel and
merciless. Their voice roars like the sea, and they
ride upon horses, lined up like men in formation against you, O Daughter of Babylon.
The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands waxed feeble:
anguish took
hold of him, and pangs as of a woman in
travail.
The king of Babylon has heard the report, and his hands
hang limp.
Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman in labor.
The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
The warriors of Babylon have stopped fighting; they sit in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Babylon’s homes have been set
ablaze, the bars of her gates are broken.
The Lord hath
swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not
pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong
holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath
polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.
Without
pity the Lord has
swallowed up all the dwellings of Jacob. In His wrath He has
demolished the fortified cities of the Daughter of Judah. He brought to the ground and
defiled her kingdom and its princes.
The Lord was as an enemy: he hath
swallowed up Israel, he hath
swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong
holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah
mourning and
lamentation.
The Lord is like an enemy; He has
swallowed up Israel. He has
swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed her strongholds. He has multiplied
mourning and
lamentation for the Daughter of Judah.
When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not
warning, nor speakest to
warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ but you do not
warn him or speak out to
warn him from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, and I will
hold you responsible for his blood.
Again, When a righteous man
doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him
warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I put a
stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not
warn him, he will die in his sin, and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered. And I will
hold you responsible for his blood.
That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all
estranged from me through their idols.
so that I may take
hold of the hearts of the people of Israel. For because of their idols, they are all
estranged from Me.’
And they put him in ward in chains, and brought him to the king of Babylon: they brought him into holds, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.
With hooks they
caged him and brought him to the king of Babylon. They brought him into captivity so that his
roar was heard no longer on the mountains of Israel.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister’s cup deep and large: thou shalt be
laughed to
scorn and had in
derision; it containeth much.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘You will drink your sister’s cup, a cup deep and wide. It will bring
scorn and
derision, for it
holds so much.
When they took
hold of thee by thy hand, thou
didst break, and
rend all their shoulder: and when they
leaned upon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loins to be at a stand.
When Israel took
hold of you with their hands, you
splintered,
tearing all their shoulders; when they
leaned on you, you broke, and their backs were
wrenched.
Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and, lo, it shall not be bound up to be
healed, to put a roller to bind it, to make it strong to
hold the sword.
“Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt. See, it has not been bound up for
healing, or
splinted for strength to
hold the sword.
But if the
watchman see the sword come, and blow not the
trumpet, and the people be not
warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the
watchman’s hand.
But if the
watchman sees the sword coming and fails to blow the horn to
warn the people, and the sword comes and takes away a life, then that one will be taken away in his iniquity, but I will
hold the
watchman accountable for his blood.’
When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou
dost not speak to
warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ but you do not speak out to
dissuade him from his way, then that wicked man will die in his iniquity, yet I will
hold you accountable for his blood.
And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.
The side rooms were arranged one above another in three levels of thirty rooms each. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be fastened into the wall of the temple itself.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with
miry clay, they shall
mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not
cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
As you saw the iron mixed with clay, so the peoples will
mix with one another, but will not
hold together any more than iron mixes with clay.
But hast lifted up
thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have
drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not
glorified:
Instead, you have
exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you
drank wine from them with your nobles, wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you have failed to
glorify the God who
holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.
But I will
shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that
holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
But first I will tell you what is inscribed in the Book of Truth. Yet no one has the courage to support me against these, except Michael your prince.
He shall enter
peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall
scatter among them the prey, and
spoil, and riches:
yea, and he shall
forecast his devices against the strong
holds, even for a time.
In a time of peace, he will
invade the richest provinces and do what his fathers and forefathers never did. He will
lavish plunder,
loot, and wealth on his followers, and he will plot against the strongholds—but only for a time.
Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.
He will attack the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him, making them rulers over many and distributing the land for a price.
I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from the plain of
Aven, and him that
holdeth the
sceptre from the house of
Eden: and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.
I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler of the Valley of
Aven and the one who wields the
scepter in Beth-
eden. The people of
Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.
And I will cut off the inhabitant from
Ashdod, and him that
holdeth the
sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against
Ekron: and the
remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.
I will cut off the ruler of
Ashdod and the one who wields the
scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against
Ekron, and the
remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong
hold of the daughter of
Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
And you, O
watchtower of the flock, O
stronghold of the Daughter of
Zion— the former dominion will be restored to you; sovereignty will come to the Daughter of Jerusalem.”
And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds:
I will remove the cities of your land and
tear down all your strongholds.
Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.
You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger will remain with you. What you acquire, you will not preserve; and what you save, I will give to the sword.
The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
The LORD is good, a
stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.
All thy strong
holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be
shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.
All your fortresses are fig trees with the first ripe figs; when
shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater!
Draw your water for the siege;
strengthen your fortresses. Work the clay and
tread the mortar; repair the brick
kiln!
And they shall
scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a
scorn unto them: they shall
deride every strong
hold; for they shall
heap dust, and take it.
They
scoff at kings and make rulers an object of
scorn. They
laugh at every fortress and build up siege ramps to seize it.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal
treacherously, and
holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?
Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot
tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You
tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath
bid his guests.
Be silent in the presence of the Lord GOD, for the Day of the LORD is near. Indeed, the LORD has prepared a sacrifice; He has consecrated His guests.
But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the LORD of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.
But did not My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, overtake your fathers? They
repented and said, ‘Just as the LORD of Hosts purposed to do to us according to our ways and deeds, so He has done to us.’”
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take
hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take
hold of the
skirt of him that is a
Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.
This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue will
tightly grasp the
robe of a
Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”
And Tyrus did build herself a strong
hold, and
heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the
mire of the streets.
Tyre has built herself a fortress; she has
heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the
dirt of the streets.
Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto thee;
Return to your
stronghold, O prisoners of hope; even
today I declare that I will restore to you double.
Whose possessors
slay them, and
hold themselves not guilty: and they that sell them say, Blessed be the LORD; for I am rich: and their own
shepherds pity them not.
whose buyers slaughter them without
remorse. Those who sell them say, ‘Blessed be the LORD, for I am rich!’ Even their own
shepherds have no
compassion on them.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great
tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay
hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.
On that day a great
panic from the LORD will come upon them, so that each will seize the hand of another, and the hand of one will rise against the other.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will
hate the one, and love the other; or else he will
hold to the one, and
despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and
mammon.
No one can serve two masters: Either he will
hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and
despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out?
For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife.
Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore
didst thou doubt?
Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold of Peter. “You of little faith,” He said, “why did you doubt?”
And the multitude
rebuked them, because they should
hold their peace: but they
cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
The crowd
admonished them to be silent, but they
cried out all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.
But if we say, ‘From men,’ we are afraid of the people, for they all regard John as a prophet.”
Now the
betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The One I
kiss is the man; arrest Him.”
In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a
thief with swords and
staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no
hold on me.
At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would an outlaw? Every day I sat teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest Me.
And they that had laid
hold on Jesus led him away to
Caiaphas the high priest, where the
scribes and the elders were assembled.
Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to the house of
Caiaphas the high priest, where the
scribes and elders had gathered.
And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
At that time they were
holding a
notorious prisoner named Barabbas.
And Jesus
rebuked him, saying,
Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
But Jesus
rebuked the spirit. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!”
And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.
When His family heard about this, they went out to take
custody of Him, saying, “He is out of His mind.”
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.
For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.
For the
Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands
oft, eat not,
holding the tradition of the elders.
Now in
holding to the tradition of the elders, the
Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat until they wash their hands
ceremonially.
And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to
hold, as the washing of cups, and pots,
brasen vessels, and of tables.
And on returning from the market, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions for them to observe, including the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and couches for
dining.
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men.”
And many charged him that he should
hold his peace: but he
cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
Many people
admonished him to be silent, but he
cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And when ye stand praying,
forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may
forgive you your trespasses.
And when you stand to pray, if you
hold anything against another,
forgive it, so that your Father in heaven will
forgive your trespasses as well.”
And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.
At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus, for they knew that He had spoken this parable against them. But fearing the crowd, they left Him and went away.
And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young men laid hold on him:
One young man who had been following Jesus was wearing a linen cloth around his body. They caught hold of him,
And Jesus
rebuked him, saying,
Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and
hurt him not.
But Jesus
rebuked the
demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the
demon threw the man down before them all and came out without
harming him.
Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about
besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.
Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to depart from them, because great fear had taken hold of them. So He got into the boat and started back.
And they held their peace. And he took him, and
healed him, and let him go;
But they remained silent. Then Jesus took
hold of the man,
healed him, and sent him on his way.
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will
hate the one, and love the other; or else he will
hold to the one, and
despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and
mammon.
No servant can serve two masters. Either he will
hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and
despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
And they which went before
rebuked him, that he should
hold his peace: but he
cried so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
Those who led the way
admonished him to be silent, but he
cried out all the louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
“I tell you,” He answered, “if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out.”
And they watched him, and sent forth
spies, which should
feign themselves just men, that they might take
hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.
So they watched Him closely and sent
spies who pretended to be
sincere. They were hoping to catch Him in His words in order to hand Him over to the rule and authority of the governor.
And they could not take

amazed at His answer, they fell silent.
The men who were

mock Him and beat Him.
And as they led him away, they laid
hold upon one Simon, a
Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
As the soldiers led Him away, they seized Simon of

But their eyes were

But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.
And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the

Now six stone water jars had been set there for the Jewish rites of
purification. Each could
hold from twenty to thirty gallons.
Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be

But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the
agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its
clutches.
