And there fell ten portions to
Manasseh, beside the land of
Gilead and
Bashan, which were on the
other side Jordan;
Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto
Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of
Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
Now the family heads of the Levites approached
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the
other tribes of Israel
And unto the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the
other half tribe of
Manasseh they gave Golan in
Bashan with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer; and Beesh-terah with her suburbs; two cities.
This is what the
Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: From the half-tribe of
Manasseh they were given Golan in
Bashan, a city of refuge for the
manslayer, and Beeshterah—two cities, together with their pasturelands.
And now the LORD your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you on the other side Jordan.
And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.
Now to the one half of the tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given possession in
Bashan: but unto the
other half thereof gave Joshua among their brethren on this side Jordan westward. And when Joshua sent them away also unto their tents, then he blessed them,
(To the half-tribe of
Manasseh Moses had given land in
Bashan, and to the
other half Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan among their brothers.) When Joshua sent them to their homes he blessed them,
Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD’S tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but
rebel not against the LORD, nor
rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God.
If indeed the land of your inheritance is unclean, then cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take possession of it among us. But do not
rebel against the LORD or against us by building for
yourselves an altar
other than the altar of the LORD our God.
God
forbid that we should
rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle.
Far be it from us to
rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him
today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices,
other than the altar of the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle.”
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of
Reuben, and from the children of
Gad, out of the land of
Gilead, unto the land of
Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
Then
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, together with the
other leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of
Canaan and brought back a report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of
Gilead.
When ye have
transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served
other gods, and bowed
yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be
kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
If you
transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve
other gods and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from this good land He has given you.”
And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
And Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your fathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and
Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates and worshiped
other gods.
And I took your father Abraham from the
other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of
Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
But I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates and led him through all the land of
Canaan, and I multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,
And I brought you into the land of the
Amorites, which dwelt on the
other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
Later, I brought you to the land of the
Amorites who lived beyond the Jordan. They fought against you, but I delivered them into your hand, that you should possess their land when I destroyed them before you.
Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in
sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the
other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in
sincerity and truth; cast aside the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the
other side of the flood, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for
yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the
Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!”
And the people answered and said, God
forbid that we should
forsake the LORD, to serve
other gods;
The people replied, “Far be it from us to
forsake the LORD to serve
other gods!
And they
forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed
other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and
provoked the LORD to anger.
Thus they
forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they followed after various gods of the peoples around them. They bowed down to them and
provoked the LORD to anger,
And yet they would not
hearken unto their judges, but they went a
whoring after
other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
Israel, however, did not
listen to their judges. Instead, they
prostituted themselves with
other gods and bowed down to them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commandments; they did not do as their fathers had done.
And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following
other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their
stubborn way.
But when the judge died, the Israelites became even more corrupt than their fathers, going after
other gods to serve them and bow down to them. They would not give up their evil practices and
stubborn ways.
And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the
Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;
Whenever the Israelites would plant their crops, the Midianites,
Amalekites, and
other people of the east would come up and
invade them,
Then all the Midianites and the
Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of
Jezreel.
Then all the Midianites,
Amalekites, and
other people of the east gathered together, crossed over the Jordan, and camped in the Valley of
Jezreel.
And the number of them that
lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
And the number of those who
lapped the water with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the
others knelt to drink.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the
other people go every man unto his place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “With the three hundred men who
lapped the water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the
others are to go home.”
So the people took
victuals in their hand, and their
trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of
Midian was beneath him in the valley.
So
Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred men, who took charge of the provisions and rams’ horns of the
others. And the camp of
Midian lay below him in the valley.
And the Midianites and the
Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
Now the Midianites,
Amalekites, and all the
other people of the east had settled in the valley like a
swarm of locusts, and their camels were as countless as the sand on the
seashore.
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a
trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
And he divided the three hundred men into three companies and gave each man a ram’s horn in one hand and a large
jar in the
other, containing a
torch.
And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they
slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they
slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued
Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the
other side Jordan.
They also captured Oreb and Zeeb, the two princes of
Midian; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. So they pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to
Gideon on the
other side of the Jordan.
And
Abimelech, and the company that was with him,
rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two
other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and
slew them.
Then
Abimelech and the companies with him
rushed forward and took their stand at the entrance of the city gate. The
other two companies
rushed against all who were in the fields and struck them down.
And that year they
vexed and
oppressed the children of Israel: eighteen years, all the children of Israel that were on the
other side Jordan in the land of the
Amorites, which is in
Gilead.
who that very year
harassed and
oppressed the Israelites, and did so for eighteen years to all the Israelites on the
other side of the Jordan in
Gilead, the land of the
Amorites.
Yet ye have
forsaken me, and served
other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
But you have
forsaken Me and served
other gods, so I will no longer save you.
Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the
other side of
Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the
other side of the
Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
And the woman made
haste, and ran, and shewed her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the
other day.
The woman ran quickly to tell her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has reappeared!”
And
Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Samson told her, “If they
tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become as weak as any
other man.”
And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
He replied, “If they
tie me up with new ropes that have never been used, I will become as weak as any
other man.”
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You have
mocked me and
lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it with a pin, I will become as weak as any
other man.”
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any
other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any
other man.”
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at
other times before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
Then she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and
shake myself free.” But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
And
Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood, and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, and of the
other with his left.
And
Samson reached out for the two central pillars supporting the temple.
Bracing himself against them with his right hand on one
pillar and his left hand on the
other,
And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in
array against Gibeah, as at
other times.
On the third day the Israelites went up against the Benjamites and
arrayed themselves against Gibeah as they had done before.
And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to
smite of the people, and kill, as at
other times, in the
highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the
other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
The Benjamites came out against them and were drawn away from the city. They began to attack the people as before, killing about thirty men of Israel in the fields and on the roads, one of which led up to
Bethel and the
other to Gibeah.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the
other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
who took
Moabite women as their wives, one named Orpah and the
other named
Ruth. And after they had lived in Moab about ten years,
And
Naomi said unto
Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any
other field.
And
Naomi said to her daughter-in-law
Ruth, “My daughter, it is good for you to work with his young women, so that nothing will happen to you in another field.”
Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning
redeeming and concerning changing, for to
confirm all things; a man
plucked off his
shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
Now in former times in Israel, concerning the
redemption or exchange of property, to make any matter legally binding a man would remove his
sandal and give it to the
other party, and this was a
confirmation in Israel.
And he had two wives; the name of the one was
Hannah, and the name of the
other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but
Hannah had no children.
He had two wives, one named
Hannah and the
other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but
Hannah had none.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant is
listening.”
Be strong, and
quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you:
quit yourselves like men, and fight.
Take courage and be men, O Philistines! Otherwise, you will serve the Hebrews just as they served you. Now be men and fight!”
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
“Look,” they said, “you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now
appoint a king to judge us like all the
other nations.”
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day,
wherewith they have
forsaken me, and served
other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Just as they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day,
forsaking Me and serving
other gods, so they are doing to you.
And he will
appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over
fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to
reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his
chariots.
He will
appoint some for himself as commanders of thousands and of
fifties, and
others to
plow his ground, to
reap his harvest, to make his weapons of war, and to
equip his
chariots.
That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to judge us, to go out before us, and to fight our battles.”
And they ran and
fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
So they ran and brought Saul, and when he stood among the people, he was a head taller than any of the others.
Now it came to pass upon a day, that
Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the
other side. But he told not his father.
One day
Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the
Philistine outpost on the
other side.” But
Jonathan did not tell his father.
And between the passages, by which
Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the
other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the
other Seneh.
Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that
Jonathan intended to cross to reach the
Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the
other Seneh.
One
cliff stood to the north toward
Michmash, and the
other to the south toward Geba.
Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and
Jonathan my son will be on the
other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
Then Saul said to all Israel, “You stand on one side, and I and my son
Jonathan will stand on the
other side.” “Do what seems good to you,” the troops replied.
And Saul said unto the
Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the
Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the
Kenites departed from among the
Amalekites.
And he
warned the
Kenites, “Since you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt, go on and get away from the
Amalekites.
Otherwise I will
sweep you away with them.” So the
Kenites moved away from the
Amalekites.
And he took
Agag the king of the
Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
He captured
Agag king of Amalek alive, but devoted all the
others to destruction with the sword.
And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
The Philistines stood on one hill and the Israelites stood on another, with the valley between them.
For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in
array, army against army.
And Israel and the Philistines
arrayed in formation against each
other.
And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
As the troops were returning home after David had killed the
Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and
other instruments.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at
other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s hand.
The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any
dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be
avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king desires no
other dowry but a hundred
Philistine foreskins as
revenge on his enemies.’” But Saul intended to cause David’s death at the hands of the Philistines.
And when it was told Saul, he sent
other messengers, and they
prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they
prophesied also.
When this was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they began to
prophesy as well. So Saul tried again and sent messengers a third time, and even they began to
prophesy.
And the king sat upon his seat, as at
other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and
Jonathan arose, and
Abner sat by Saul’s side, and David’s place was empty.
He sat in his usual place by the wall, opposite
Jonathan and beside
Abner, but David’s place was empty.
And as soon as the
lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they
kissed one another, and
wept one with another, until David exceeded.
When the young man had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone, fell facedown, and bowed three times. Then he and
Jonathan kissed each
other and
wept together—though David
wept more.
And the priest said, The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod: if thou
wilt take that, take it: for there is no
other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
The priest replied, “The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no
other but this one.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made
haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
Saul was proceeding along one side of the mountain, and David and his men along the
other side. Even though David was
hurrying to get away, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
Then David went over to the
other side, and stood on the top of an hill
afar off; a great space being between them:
Then David crossed to the
other side and stood
atop the mountain at a distance; there was a wide gulf between them.
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have
stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men,
cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from
abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve
other gods.
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has
stirred you up against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be
cursed in the presence of the LORD! For
today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve
other gods.’
And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring
tidings to
Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
David did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to
Gath, for he said, “
Otherwise they will report us, saying, ‘This is what David did.’” And this was David’s custom the whole time he lived in
Philistine territory.
And Saul
disguised himself, and put on
other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “
Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they
drave before those
other cattle, and said, This is David’s
spoil.
And he recovered all the flocks and herds, which his men drove
ahead of the
other livestock, calling out, “This is David’s
plunder!”
And when the men of Israel that were on the
other side of the valley, and they that were on the
other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they
forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
Ye daughters of Israel,
weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with
other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your
apparel.
O daughters of Israel,
weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and
luxury, who decked your garments with ornaments of gold.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the
pool, and the
other on the
other side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the
pool.
And Saul’s son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the
other Rechab, the sons of
Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin:
Saul’s son had two men who were leaders of
raiding parties. One was named Baanah and the
other Rechab; they were sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite of the tribe of Benjamin—Beeroth is considered part of Benjamin,
And the LORD sent
Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the
other poor.
Then the LORD sent
Nathan to David, and when he arrived, he said, “There were two men in a certain city, one rich and the
other poor.
Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and
encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.
Now, therefore,
assemble the rest of the troops, lay siege to the city, and capture it.
Otherwise I will capture the city, and it will be named after me.”
And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil in sending me away is greater than the
other that thou
didst unto me. But he would not
hearken unto her.
“No,” she replied, “sending me away is worse than this great wrong you have already done to me!” But he refused to
listen to her.
And the servants of
Absalom did unto Amnon as
Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man
gat him up upon his
mule, and fled.
So
Absalom’s young men did to Amnon just as
Absalom had ordered. Then all the
other sons of the king got up, and each one fled on his
mule.
And thy
handmaid had two sons, and they two
strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one
smote the
other, and
slew him.
And your
maidservant had two sons who were fighting in the field with no one to separate them, and one struck the
other and killed him.
Behold, he is
hid now in some pit, or in some
other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that
whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow
Absalom.
Surely by now he is hiding in a cave or some
other location. If some of your troops fall first,
whoever hears of it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow
Absalom.’
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying,
Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be
swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.
Now send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not
spend the night at the fords of the wilderness, but be sure to cross over.
Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be
swallowed up.’”
Otherwise I should have wrought
falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter
hid from the king, and thou
thyself wouldest have set
thyself against me.
If I had
jeopardized my own life—and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have abandoned me.”
And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and
threshing instruments and
other instruments of the oxen for wood.
Araunah said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever seems good and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the
threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.
And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and
Abiathar the priest, and
Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the
other sons of the king, as well as
Abiathar the priest and
Joab the commander of the army. But he did not
invite your servant Solomon.
Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be counted as criminals.”
And the
other woman said,
Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
“No,” said the
other woman, “the living one is my son and the dead one is your son.” But the first woman insisted, “No, the dead one is yours and the living one is mine.” So they
argued before the king.
Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the
other saith,
Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
Then the king replied, “This woman says, ‘My son is alive and yours is dead,’ but that woman says, ‘No, your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
and the king declared, “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”
Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her
bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise
slay it. But the
other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
Then the woman whose son was alive spoke to the king because she
yearned with
compassion for her son. “Please, my lord,” she said, “give her the living
baby. Do not kill him!” But the
other woman said, “He will be neither mine nor yours. Cut him in two!”
Barley also and straw for the horses and
dromedaries brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.
Each one also brought to the required place their quotas of barley and straw for the
chariot horses and
other horses.
And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor
axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.
The temple was constructed using finished stones cut at the
quarry, so that no hammer or
chisel or any
other iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built.
And five cubits was the one wing of the
cherub, and five cubits the
other wing of the
cherub: from the
uttermost part of the one wing unto the
uttermost part of the
other were ten cubits.
One wing of the first
cherub was five cubits long, and the
other wing was five cubits long as well. So the full wingspan was ten cubits.
And the
other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims were of one measure and one size.
The second
cherub also measured ten cubits; both
cherubim had the same size and shape,
The height of the one
cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the
other cherub.
and the height of each
cherub was ten cubits.
And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the
other cherub touched the
other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
And he placed the
cherubim inside the
innermost room of the temple. Since their wings were spread out, the wing of the first
cherub touched one wall, while the wing of the second
cherub touched the
other wall, and in the middle of the room their wingtips touched.
And the two doors were of
fir tree: the two leaves of the one door were folding, and the two leaves of the
other door were folding.
The two doors were made of
cypress wood, and each had two folding panels.
