indulge in
revelry.
And the daughter of any priest, if she
profane herself by
playing the
whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.

prostituting herself, she profanes her father; she must be burned in the fire.
Then they shall bring out the
damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to
play the
whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.
she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house, and there the men of her city will stone her to death. For she has committed an
outrage in Israel by being
promiscuous in her father’s house. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
And his
concubine played the
whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
But she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father’s house in
Bethlehem in Judah. After she had been there four months,
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall
play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to
play it, and you will be well.”

Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in
playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to
play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”

morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he

The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David
played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his
javelin in his hand: and David
played with his hand.
But as Saul was sitting in his house with his
spear in his hand, a spirit of distress from the LORD came upon him. While David was
playing the
harp,
Have I need of
mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to
play the
mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
Am I in need of
madmen, that you have brought this man to
rave in my presence? Must this man come into my house?”
Then said Saul, I have
sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee
harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have
played the
fool, and have
erred exceedingly.
Then Saul replied, “I have
sinned. Come back, David my son. I will never
harm you again, because
today you considered my life precious. I have
played the
fool and have committed a grave error!”
And
Abner said to
Joab, Let the young men now arise, and
play before us. And
Joab said, Let them arise.

Abner said to
Joab, “Let us have the young men get up and
compete before us.” “Let them get up,”
Joab replied.

played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of
fir wood, even on harps, and on

celebrate before the LORD,
Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.
Be strong and let us fight
bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in His sight.”
And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and
rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
All the people followed him,
playing flutes and
rejoicing with such a great joy that the earth was split by the sound.
But now bring me a
minstrel. And it came to pass, when the
minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.
And David and all Israel
played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with
psalteries, and with
timbrels, and with cymbals, and with
trumpets.

trumpets.
And
Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with
psalteries on Alamoth;

play the harps according to Alamoth.

playing: and she
despised him in her heart.

celebrating, and she
despised him in her heart.
Asaph the chief, and next to him
Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-
edom: and Jeiel with
psalteries and with harps; but
Asaph made a sound with cymbals;
Asaph was the chief,
Zechariah was second, then Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-
edom, and Jeiel. They were to
play the harps and lyres, while
Asaph sounded the cymbals
Also the Levites which were the singers, all of them of
Asaph, of Heman, of
Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, being
arrayed in white linen, having cymbals and
psalteries and harps, stood at the east end of the altar, and with them an hundred and twenty priests sounding with
trumpets:)
all the
Levitical singers—
Asaph, Heman,
Jeduthun, and their sons and relatives—stood on the east side of the altar, dressed in fine linen and
playing cymbals, harps, and lyres, accompanied by 120 priests sounding
trumpets.
And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers
sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the burnt offering was finished.

Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
The hills yield him their produce, while all the beasts of the field play nearby.
Wilt thou
play with him as with a bird? or
wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
Can you
pet him like a bird or put him on a
leash for your maidens?
Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
The singers went before, the
players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels
playing with
timbrels.
The singers lead the way, the musicians follow after, among the maidens playing tambourines.
As well the singers as the players on instruments shall be there: all my springs are in thee.
Singers and pipers will
proclaim, “All my springs of joy are in You.”
There go the ships: there is that
leviathan, whom thou hast made to
play therein.
The infant will
play by the
cobra’s den, and the
toddler will reach into the
viper’s nest.
The LORD was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD.
The LORD will save me; we will play songs on stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the house of the LORD.
For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and
burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not
transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest,
playing the
harlot.
“For long ago you broke your yoke and
tore off your chains, saying, ‘I will not serve!’ Indeed, on every high hill and under every green tree you lay down as a
prostitute.
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly
polluted? but thou hast
played the
harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him to marry another, can he ever return to her? Would not such a land be completely
defiled? But you have
played the
harlot with many lovers— and you would return to Me?” declares the LORD.
The LORD said also unto me in the days of
Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which
backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath
played the
harlot.
Now in the days of King
Josiah, the LORD said to me, “Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every green tree to
prostitute herself there.
And I saw, when for all the causes whereby
backsliding Israel committed
adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of
divorce; yet her
treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and
played the
harlot also.
She saw that because faithless Israel had committed
adultery, I gave her a
certificate of
divorce and sent her away. Yet that unfaithful sister Judah had no fear and
prostituted herself as well.
Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are
foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the judgment of their God.
Then I said, “They are only the poor; they have
played the
fool, for they do not know the way of the LORD, the justice of their God.
But thou
didst trust in thine own beauty, and
playedst the
harlot because of thy
renown, and pouredst out thy fornications on every one that passed by; his it was.
But because of your fame, you trusted in your beauty and
played the
harlot. You
lavished your favors on
everyone who passed by, and your beauty was theirs for the asking.
And of thy garments thou
didst take, and deckedst thy high places with
divers colours, and
playedst the
harlot thereupon: the like things shall not come, neither shall it be so.
You took some of your garments and made colorful high places for
yourself, and on them you
prostituted yourself. Such things should not have happened; never should they have occurred!
Thou hast
played the
whore also with the Assyrians, because thou
wast unsatiable;
yea, thou hast
played the
harlot with them, and yet couldest not be satisfied.
Then you
prostituted yourself with the Assyrians, because you were not yet satisfied. Even after that, you were still not satisfied.
And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and
execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from
playing the
harlot, and thou also shalt give no
hire any more.
Then they will burn down your houses and
execute judgment against you in the sight of many women. I will put an end to your
prostitution, and you will never again pay your lovers.
And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they
bruised the teats of their
virginity.
and they
played in Egypt,
prostituting themselves from their youth. Their breasts were
fondled there, and their virgin bosoms
caressed.
And Aholah
played the
harlot when she was mine; and she
doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours,
Oholah
prostituted herself while she was still Mine. She
lusted after her lovers, the Assyrians—warriors
Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to
remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had
played the
harlot in the land of Egypt.
Yet she multiplied her
promiscuity, remembering the days of her youth, when she had
prostituted herself in the land of Egypt
Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a woman that
playeth the
harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto
Aholibah, the
lewd women.
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
Indeed, you are to them like a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, who
skillfully plays an instrument. They hear your words but do not put them into practice.
For their mother hath
played the
harlot: she that conceived them hath done
shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.
For their mother has
played the
harlot and has conceived them in disgrace. For she thought, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me bread and water, wool and linen, oil and drink.’
And I said unto her, Thou shalt
abide for me many days; thou shalt not
play the
harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.
Then I said to her, “You must live with me for many days; you must not be
promiscuous or belong to another, and I will do the same for you.”
My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to
err, and they have gone a
whoring from under their God.
My people
consult their wooden idols, and their divining rods inform them. For a spirit of
prostitution leads them
astray and they have
played the
harlot against their God.
Though thou, Israel,
play the
harlot, yet let not Judah
offend; and come not ye unto
Gilgal, neither go ye up to Beth-
aven, nor
swear, The LORD liveth.
Though you
prostitute yourself, O Israel, may Judah avoid such guilt! Do not journey to
Gilgal, do not go up to Beth-
aven, and do not
swear on oath, ‘As surely as the LORD lives!’
Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a
whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every
cornfloor.
And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof.
And the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing there.”
And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
When Jesus entered the house of the
synagogue leader, He saw the
flute players and the
noisy crowd.
And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have
mourned unto you, and ye have not
lamented.
They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have
mourned to you, and ye have not
wept.
They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another: ‘We
played the
flute for you, and you did not dance; we
sang a
dirge, and you did not
weep.’
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got up to
indulge in
revelry.”
And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or
harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or
harped?
Even in the case of lifeless instruments, such as the
flute or
harp, how will
anyone recognize the
tune they are
playing unless the notes are distinct?
And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no
craftsman, of
whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a
millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
And the sound of harpists and musicians, of
flute players and trumpeters, will never ring out in you again. Nor will any
craftsmen of any trade be found in you again, nor the sound of a
millstone be heard in you again.
And all their brethren played, and he made them go up together with them.
For first, she hath disobeyed the law of the most High; and secondly, she hath
trespassed against her own husband; and thirdly, she hath
played the
whore in
adultery, and brought children by another man.
Cocker thy child, and he shall make thee afraid:
play with him, and he will bring thee to
heaviness.
He played with lions as with kids, and with bears as with lambs.
