And
Jesse took an
ass laden with bread, and a
bottle of wine, and a
kid, and sent them by David his
son unto Saul.
And
Jesse took a
donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and one young goat, and sent them to Saul with his
son David.
Now David was the
son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was
Jesse; and he had eight
sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
Now David was the
son of a man named
Jesse, an Ephrathite from
Bethlehem of Judah who had eight
sons in the days of Saul. And
Jesse was old and well along in years.
And the three eldest
sons of
Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three
sons that went to the battle were Eliab the first born, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
The three older
sons of
Jesse had followed Saul into battle: The
firstborn was Eliab, the second was Abinadab, and the third was Shammah.
And
Jesse said unto David his
son, Take now for thy brethren an
ephah of this
parched corn, and these ten
loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;
One day
Jesse said to his
son David, “Take this
ephah of
roasted grain and these ten
loaves of bread for your brothers and
hurry to their camp.
And when Saul saw David go forth against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose
son is this youth? And
Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the commander of the army, “
Abner, whose
son is this young man?” “As surely as you live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not know.”
“Find out whose son this young man is!” said the king.
And Saul said to him, Whose
son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the
son of thy servant
Jesse the
Bethlehemite.
“Whose
son are you, young man?” asked Saul. “I am the
son of your servant
Jesse of
Bethlehem,” David replied.
And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
As the troops were returning home after David had killed the
Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful
songs, and with tambourines and other instruments.
And Saul was very
wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
And Saul was
furious and resented this
song. “They have ascribed tens of thousands to David,” he said, “but only thousands to me. What more can he have but the kingdom?”
And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?
And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel, that I should become the son-in-law of the king?”
And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a
snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my
son in law in the one of the
twain.
“I will give her to David,” Saul thought, “so that she may be a
snare to him, and the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David, “For a second time now you can be my
son-in-law.”
And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.
Then Saul ordered his servants, “Speak to David privately and tell him, ‘Behold, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Now therefore, become his son-in-law.’”
And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
But when Saul’s servants relayed these words to David, he replied, “Does it seem
trivial in your sight to be the
son-in-law of the king? I am a poor man and lightly esteemed.”
And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s
son in law: and the days were not
expired.
When the servants reported these terms to David, he was pleased to become the king’s
son-in-law. Before the
wedding day arrived,
Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and
slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s
son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.
David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented them as payment in full to become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave his daughter Michal to David in marriage.
And Saul spake to
Jonathan his
son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.
Then Saul ordered his
son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But
Jonathan delighted greatly in David,
But
Jonathan Saul’s
son delighted much in David: and
Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take
heed to
thyself until the morning, and
abide in a secret place, and hide
thyself:
so he
warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret place and hide there.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty: and Saul said unto
Jonathan his
son, Wherefore cometh not the
son of
Jesse to meat, neither
yesterday, nor to day?
But on the day after the New Moon, the second day, David’s place was still empty, and Saul asked his
son Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the
son of
Jesse come to the meal either
yesterday or
today?”
Then Saul’s anger was
kindled against
Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou
son of the
perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the
son of
Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness?
Then Saul’s anger burned against
Jonathan, and he said to him, “You
son of a
perverse and
rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the
son of
Jesse to your own shame and to the disgrace of the mother who bore you?
For as long as the
son of
Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and
fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
For as long as the
son of
Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your
kingship shall be established. Now send for him and bring him to me, for he must surely die!”
Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the
son of
Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;
Then Saul said to his servants, “
Listen, men of Benjamin! Is the
son of
Jesse giving all of you fields and vineyards and making you commanders of thousands or hundreds?
That all of you have
conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my
son hath made a league with the
son of
Jesse, and there is none of you that is
sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my
son hath
stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Is that why all of you have
conspired against me? Not one of you told me that my own
son had made a covenant with the
son of
Jesse. Not one of you has shown
concern for me or revealed to me that my
son has
stirred up my own servant to lie in wait against me, as is the case
today.”
Then answered Doeg the
Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the
son of
Jesse coming to
Nob, to
Ahimelech the
son of Ahitub.
But Doeg the
Edomite, who had stationed himself with Saul’s servants, answered: “I saw the
son of
Jesse come to
Ahimelech son of Ahitub at
Nob.
Then the king sent to call
Ahimelech the priest, the
son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in
Nob: and they came all of them to the king.
Then the king sent messengers to
summon Ahimelech the priest, the
son of Ahitub, and his father’s whole family, who were priests at
Nob. And all of them came to the king.
And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
“
Listen now,
son of Ahitub,” said Saul. “Here I am, my lord,” he replied.
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye
conspired against me, thou and the
son of
Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
And Saul asked him, “Why have you and the
son of
Jesse conspired against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him so that he could rise up against me to lie in wait, as he is doing
today.”
Then
Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king’s
son in law, and goeth at thy
bidding, and is honourable in thine house?
Ahimelech answered the king, “Who among all your servants is as faithful as David, the king’s
son-in-law, the captain of your
bodyguard who is honored in your house?
And one of the
sons of
Ahimelech the
son of Ahitub, named
Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.
But one of the
sons of
Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His name was
Abiathar, and he fled to David.
And it came to pass, when
Abiathar the
son of
Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an
ephod in his hand.
And
Jonathan Saul’s
son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
And Saul’s
son Jonathan came to David in Horesh and strengthened his hand in God,
And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my
son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and
wept.
When David had finished saying these things, Saul called back, “Is that your voice, David my
son?” Then Saul
wept aloud Ask thy young men, and they will
shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee,
whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy
son David.
Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on the day of a feast. Please give whatever you can afford to your servants and to your son David.’”
And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the
son of
Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is this
son of
Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.
Now therefore know and consider what thou
wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a
son of
Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.
Now consider carefully what you must do, because
disaster looms over our master and all his household. For he is such a
scoundrel that
nobody can speak to him!”
But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.
But Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Palti son of Laish, who was from Gallim.
And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David
beheld the place where Saul lay, and
Abner the
son of
Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the
trench, and the people pitched round about him.
Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw the place where Saul and
Abner son of
Ner, the general of his army, had
lain down. Saul was lying inside the inner circle of the camp, with the troops camped around him.
Then answered David and said to
Ahimelech the Hittite, and to
Abishai the
son of Zeruiah, brother to
Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And
Abishai said, I will go down with thee.
And David asked
Ahimelech the Hittite and
Abishai son of Zeruiah,
Joab’s brother, “Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?” “I will go with you,” answered
Abishai.
And David
cried to the people, and to
Abner the
son of
Ner, saying, Answerest thou not,
Abner? Then
Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?
And David
shouted to the troops and to
Abner son of
Ner, “Will you not answer me,
Abner?” “Who calls to the king?”
Abner replied.
And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.
Then Saul recognized David’s voice and asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” “It is my voice, my lord and king,” David said.
Then said Saul, I have
sinned: return, my
son David: for I will no more do thee
harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the
fool, and have
erred exceedingly.
Then Saul replied, “I have
sinned. Come back, David my
son. I will never
harm you again, because
today you considered my life precious. I have played the
fool and have committed a grave error!”
Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.
Saul said to him, “May you be blessed, David my
son. You will
accomplish great things and will surely prevail.” So David went on his way, and Saul returned home.
And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the
son of Maoch, king of
Gath.
So David set out with his six hundred men and went to Achish
son of Maoch, the king of
Gath.
Moreover the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to
morrow shalt thou and thy
sons be with me: the LORD also shall deliver the host of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
Moreover, the LORD will deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines, and
tomorrow you and your
sons will be with me. And the LORD will deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their
sons, and their daughters, were taken
captives.
When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned down and their wives and
sons and daughters taken
captive.
And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was
grieved, every man for his
sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
And David was greatly distressed because the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of every man
grieved for his
sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.
And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither
sons nor daughters, neither
spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
Nothing was missing, young or old,
son or daughter, or any of the
plunder the
Amalekites had taken. David brought everything back.
And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his
sons; and the Philistines
slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchi-shua, Saul’s
sons.
The Philistines followed hard after Saul and his
sons, and they killed Saul’s
sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.
So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.
So Saul, his three
sons, his
armor-bearer, and all his men died together that same day.
And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his
sons were dead, they
forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three
sons fallen in mount
Gilboa.
The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three
sons fallen on Mount
Gilboa.
All the
valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his
sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to
Jabesh, and burnt them there.
all their men of
valor set out, journeyed all night, and
retrieved the bodies of Saul and his
sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at
Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.
And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and
Jonathan his
son are dead also.
“What was the outcome?” David asked. “Please tell me.” “The troops fled from the battle,” he replied. “Many of them fell and died. And Saul and his
son Jonathan are also dead.”
And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and
Jonathan his
son be dead?
Then David asked the young man who had brought him the report, “How do you know that Saul and his
son Jonathan are dead?”
And they
mourned, and
wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for
Jonathan his
son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.
They
mourned and
wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his
son Jonathan, and for the people of the LORD and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.
And David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?” “I am the son of a foreigner,” he answered. “I am an Amalekite.”
(Also he
bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)
and he ordered that the
sons of Judah be taught the
Song of the Bow. It is written in the Book of
Jashar:
But
Abner the
son of
Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took
Ish-bosheth the
son of Saul, and brought him over to
Mahanaim;
Meanwhile,
Abner son of
Ner, the commander of Saul’s army, took Saul’s
son Ish-bosheth, moved him to
Mahanaim,
Ish-bosheth Saul’s
son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
Saul’s
son Ish-bosheth was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned for two years. The house of Judah, however, followed David.
And
Joab the
son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the
pool, and the other on the other side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the
pool.
Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which
pertained to
Ish-bosheth the
son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
So they got up and were counted off—twelve for Benjamin and
Ish-bosheth
son of Saul, and twelve for David.
And unto David were
sons born in
Hebron: and his
firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
And his second, Chileab, of
Abigail the wife of Nabal the
Carmelite; and the third,
Absalom the
son of
Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur;
his second was Chileab, by
Abigail the widow of Nabal of
Carmel; his third was
Absalom, the
son of
Maacah daughter of King Talmai of Geshur;
And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital;
his fourth was Adonijah, the son of Haggith; his fifth was Shephatiah, the son of Abital;
And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David’s wife. These were born to David in
Hebron.
and his sixth was Ithream, by David’s wife Eglah. These
sons were born to David in
Hebron.
And David sent messengers to
Ish-bosheth Saul’s
son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I
espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
Then David sent messengers to say to
Ish-bosheth
son of Saul, “Give me back my wife, Michal, whom I
betrothed to myself for a hundred
Philistine foreskins.”
And
Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the
son of Laish.
So
Ish-bosheth sent and took Michal from her husband Paltiel
son of Laish.
When
Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told
Joab, saying,
Abner the
son of
Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
When
Joab and all his troops arrived, he was informed, “
Abner son of
Ner came to see the king, who sent him on his way in peace.”
Thou knowest
Abner the
son of
Ner, that he came to
deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest.
And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of
Abner the
son of
Ner:
Afterward, David heard about this and said, “I and my kingdom are
forever guiltless before the LORD concerning the blood of
Abner son of
Ner.
For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to
slay Abner the
son of
Ner.
So on that day all the troops and all Israel were
convinced that the king had no part in the murder of
Abner son of
Ner.
And I am this day weak, though
anointed king; and these men the
sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the
doer of evil according to his wickedness.
And I am weak this day, though
anointed as king, and these men, the
sons of Zeruiah, are too fierce for me. May the LORD repay the
evildoer according to his evil!”
And when Saul’s
son heard that
Abner was dead in
Hebron, his hands were feeble, and all the Israelites were troubled.
Now when
Ish-bosheth
son of Saul heard that
Abner had died in
Hebron, he lost courage, and all Israel was dismayed.
And Saul’s
son had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, the
sons of
Rimmon a Beerothite, of the children of Benjamin: (for Beeroth also was reckoned to Benjamin:
Saul’s
son had two men who were leaders of
raiding parties. One was named Baanah and the other Rechab; they were
sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite of the tribe of Benjamin—Beeroth is considered part of Benjamin,
And
Jonathan, Saul’s
son, had a
son that was
lame of his feet. He was five years old when the
tidings came of Saul and
Jonathan out of
Jezreel, and his
nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made
haste to
flee, that he fell, and became
lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
And
Jonathan son of Saul had a
son who was
lame in his feet. He was five years old when the report about Saul and
Jonathan came from
Jezreel. His
nurse picked him up and fled, but as she was
hurrying to escape, he fell and became
lame. His name was Mephibosheth.
And the
sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of
Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at
noon.
Now Rechab and Baanah, the
sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, set out and arrived at the house of
Ish-bosheth in the heat of the day, while the king was taking his
midday nap.
And they brought the head of
Ish-bosheth unto David to
Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of
Ish-bosheth the
son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath
avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.
They brought the head of
Ish-bosheth to David at
Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of
Ish-bosheth
son of Saul, your enemy who sought your life.
Today the LORD has granted
vengeance to my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”
And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the
sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all
adversity,
But David answered Rechab and his brother Baanah, the
sons of
Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from
Hebron: and there were yet
sons and daughters born to David.
After he had arrived from
Hebron, David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, and more
sons and daughters were born to him.
And they set the ark of God upon a new
cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the
sons of Abinadab,
drave the new
cart.
They set the ark of God on a new
cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the
sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new
cart,
Moreover I will
appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness
afflict them any more, as
beforetime,
And I will provide a place for My people Israel and will plant them so that they may dwell in a place of their own and be disturbed no more. No longer will the
sons of wickedness
oppress them as they did at the beginning
I will be his father, and he shall be my
son. If he commit iniquity, I will
chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.
David
smote also Hadadezer, the
son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates.
David also defeated Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah, who had marched out to restore his dominion along the Euphrates River.
Then Toi sent
Joram his
son unto king David, to
salute him, and to
bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and
smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And
Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass:
he sent his
son Joram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had been at war with Toi.
Joram brought with him articles of silver and gold and bronze,
Of Syria, and of Moab, and of the children of
Ammon, and of the Philistines, and of Amalek, and of the
spoil of Hadadezer,
son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
And
Joab the
son of Zeruiah was over the host; and
Jehoshaphat the
son of Ahilud was recorder;
Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army;
Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder;
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief rulers.
Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and Pelethites; and David’s sons were priestly leaders.
And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may
shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king,
Jonathan hath yet a
son, which is
lame on his feet.
So the king asked, “Is there
anyone left of Saul’s family to whom I can show the kindness of God?” Ziba answered, “There is still
Jonathan’s
son, who is
lame in both feet.”
And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the
son of Ammiel, in Lo-
debar.
“Where is he?” replied the king. And Ziba said, “Indeed, he is in Lo-
debar at the house of Machir
son of Ammiel.”
Then king David sent, and
fetched him out of the house of Machir, the
son of Ammiel, from Lo-
debar.
So King David had him brought from the house of Machir
son of Ammiel in Lo-
debar.
Now when Mephibosheth, the
son of
Jonathan, the
son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant!
And when Mephibosheth
son of
Jonathan, the
son of Saul, came to David, he fell facedown in reverence. Then David said, “Mephibosheth!” “I am your servant,” he replied.
Then the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master’s
son all that
pertained to Saul and to all his house.
Then the king summoned Saul’s servant Ziba and said to him, “I have given to your master’s grandson all that belonged to Saul and to all his house.
Thou therefore, and thy
sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master’s
son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master’s
son shall eat bread
alway at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen
sons and twenty servants.
You and your sons and servants are to work the ground for him and bring in the harvest, so that your master’s grandson may have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.
Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king’s sons.
And Ziba said to the king, “Your servant will do all that my lord the king has commanded.” So Mephibosheth
ate at David’s table like one of the king’s own
sons.
And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.
And Mephibosheth had a young
son named
Mica, and all who dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants of Mephibosheth.
And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of
Ammon died, and Hanun his
son reigned in his
stead.
Some time later, the king of the
Ammonites died and was succeeded by his
son Hanun.
