Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was
speaking about the death of
Lazarus.
For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it.
And I know that his commandment is life
everlasting:
whatsoever I
speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I
speak.
And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.”
I
speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his
heel against me.
I am not
speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But this is to
fulfill the Scripture: ‘The one who shares My bread has lifted up his
heel against Me.’
Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works.
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming, and he has no claim on Me.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not
speak of himself; but
whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he
speak: and he will
shew you things to come.
However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.
These things have I spoken unto you in
proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more
speak unto you in
proverbs, but I shall
shew you plainly of the Father.
I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
His disciples said unto him, Lo, now
speakest thou plainly, and
speakest no
proverb.
His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and without figures of speech.
And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so that they may have My joy fulfilled within them.
Then saith
Pilate unto him,
Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to
crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
So
Pilate said to Him, “Do You refuse to
speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You and authority to
crucify You?”
And from
thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews
cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend:
whosoever maketh himself a king
speaketh against Caesar.
From then on,
Pilate tried to release Him, but the Jews kept
shouting, “If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar.
Anyone who declares himself a king is
defying Caesar.”
To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
After His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many
convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them
utterance.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
And when this sound
rang out, a crowd came together in
bewilderment, because each one heard them
speaking his own language.
And they were all
amazed and
marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which
speak Galilaeans?
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
both Jews and converts to
Judaism; Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
David says about Him: ‘I saw the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be
shaken.
Men and brethren, let me freely
speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his
sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the
Sadducees, came upon them,
While Peter and John were
speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the
Sadducees came up to them,
But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly
threaten them, that they
speak henceforth to no man in this name.
But to keep this message from spreading any further among the people, we must
warn them not to
speak to
anyone in this name.”
And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
For we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness,
Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
“Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people the full message of this new life.”

At this, they yielded to
Gamaliel. They called the apostles in and had them
flogged. Then they ordered them not to
speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.
Then they
suborned men, which said, We have heard him
speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.
Then they
prompted some men to say, “We heard Stephen
speak words of
blasphemy against Moses and against God.”
And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to
speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
where they presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.
Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
Our fathers had the tabernacle of the Testimony with them in the wilderness. It was constructed exactly as God had directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.
And the
eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom
speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
“Tell me,” said the
eunuch, “who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?”
And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem.

Send therefore to
Joppa, and call
hither Simon, whose
surname is Peter; he is
lodged in the house of one Simon a
tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall
speak unto thee.
Therefore send to
Joppa for Simon, who is called Peter. He is a
guest in the home of Simon the
tanner, by the sea.’
Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
Then Peter began to
speak: “I now truly understand that God does not show
favoritism,
While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard his message.
For they heard them
speak with tongues, and
magnify God. Then answered Peter,
For they heard them
speaking in tongues and
exalting God. Then Peter said,
And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, just as He had fallen upon us at the beginning.
Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and
Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.
Meanwhile those scattered by the persecution that began with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia,
Cyprus, and Antioch,
speaking the message only to Jews.
And some of them were men of
Cyprus and
Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the Lord Jesus.
But some of them, men from
Cyprus and
Cyrene, went to Antioch and began
speaking to the Greeks as well,
proclaiming the good news about the Lord Jesus.
And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the
synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of
exhortation for the people, say on.
After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the
synagogue leaders sent word to them: “Brothers, if you have a word of encouragement for the people, please
speak.”
Then Paul stood up, and
beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give
audience.
Paul stood up, motioned with his hand, and began to
speak: “Men of Israel and you Gentiles who fear God,
listen to me!
Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and
Barnabas: who,
speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
After the
synagogue was dismissed, many of the Jews and
devout converts to
Judaism followed Paul and
Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
Then Paul and
Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge
yourselves unworthy of
everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
Then Paul and
Barnabas answered them boldly: “It was necessary to
speak the word of God to you first. But since you
reject it and do not consider
yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.
Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
So Paul and
Barnabas spent considerable time there,
speaking boldly for the Lord, who
affirmed the message of His grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.
The same heard Paul
speak: who
stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be
healed,
This man was
listening to the words of Paul, who looked intently at him and saw that he had faith to be
healed.
And they called
Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief
speaker.
Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called
Hermes, because he was the chief
speaker.
And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren,
hearken unto me:
When they had finished
speaking, James declared, “Brothers,
listen to me!
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of
Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to
preach the word in Asia,
After the Holy Spirit had prevented them from
speaking the word in the province of Asia, they traveled through the region of Phrygia and
Galatia.
And they took him, and brought him unto
Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine,
whereof thou
speakest, is?
So they took Paul and brought him to the
Areopagus, where they asked him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?
Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:
One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking; do not be silent.
And when Paul was now about to open his mouth,
Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked
lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:
But just as Paul was about to
speak,
Gallio told the Jews, “If this matter involved a
wrongdoing or
vicious crime, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to hear your
complaint.
And he began to
speak boldly in the
synagogue: whom when
Aquila and
Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and
expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
And he began to
speak boldly in the
synagogue. When
Priscilla and
Aquila heard him, they took him in and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much
exhortation, he came into Greece,
After traveling through that area and speaking many words of encouragement, he arrived in Greece,
And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the
morrow; and continued his speech until
midnight.
On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Since Paul was ready to leave the next day, he talked to them and kept on
speaking until
midnight.
When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed.
Then Paul went back
upstairs, broke bread, and
ate. And after
speaking until
daybreak, he departed.
Also of your own
selves shall men arise,
speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
Even from your own number, men will rise up and
distort the truth to draw away disciples after them.
And as Paul was to be led into the castle, he said unto the chief captain, May I speak unto thee? Who said, Canst thou speak Greek?
As they were about to take Paul into the
barracks, he asked the commander, “May I say something to you?” “Do you
speak Greek?” he replied.
But Paul said, I am a man which am a
Jew of
Tarsus, a city in
Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I
beseech thee, suffer me to
speak unto the people.
But Paul answered, “I am a
Jew from
Tarsus in
Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Now I
beg you to allow me to
speak to the people.”
(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
When they heard him speak to them in Hebrew, they became even more silent. Then Paul declared,
And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
My companions saw the light, but they could not understand the voice of the One speaking to me.
Then said Paul, I
wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not
speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
“Brothers,” Paul replied, “I was not aware that he was the high priest, for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’”
Then Paul, after that the governor had
beckoned unto him to
speak, answered,
Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more
cheerfully answer for myself:
When the governor motioned for Paul to
speak, he began his
response: “Knowing that you have been a judge over this nation for many years, I
gladly make my
defense.
And after certain days, when
Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a
Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
After several days,
Felix returned with his wife Drusilla, who was a
Jewess. He sent for Paul and
listened to him
speak about faith in Christ Jesus.
Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none
accusation of such things as I supposed:
But when his accusers rose to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected.
Then
Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to
speak for
thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:
Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to
speak for
yourself.” Then Paul stretched out his hand and began his
defense:
And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice
speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to
kick against the pricks.
We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me in Hebrew, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you
persecute Me? It is hard for you to
kick against the goads.’
But he said, I am not
mad, most noble
Festus; but
speak forth the words of truth and
soberness.
But Paul answered, “I am not
insane, most excellent
Festus; I am
speaking words of truth and
sobriety.
For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.
For the king knows about these matters, and I can
speak freely to him. I am
confident that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.
For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
So for this reason I have called to see you and speak with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.”
But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
But we consider your views worth hearing, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.”
God
forbid:
yea, let God be true, but every man a
liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a
liar. As it is written: “So that You may be proved right when You
speak and victorious when You judge.”
But if our unrighteousness
commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh
vengeance? (I
speak as a man)
But if our unrighteousness highlights the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to
inflict His wrath on us? I am
speaking in human terms.
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
I
speak after the manner of men because of the
infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto
holiness.
I am
speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to escalating wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to
holiness.
Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
Do you not know, brothers (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
I speak the truth in Christ; I am not lying, as confirmed by my conscience in the Holy Spirit.
But the righteousness which is of faith
speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall
ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will
ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down)
For I
speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I
magnify mine office:
I am
speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I
magnify my ministry
For I will not
dare to
speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles
obedient, by word and deed,
I will not
presume to
speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obedience by word and deed,
Now I
beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all
speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction.
Howbeit we
speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to
nought:
Among the
mature, however, we
speak a message of wisdom—but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.
But we
speak the wisdom of God in a
mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
No, we
speak of the
mysterious and hidden wisdom of God, which He destined for our glory before time began.
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
And I, brethren, could not
speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto
carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual, but as worldly—as infants in Christ.
I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
I say this to your shame. Is there really no one among you wise enough to
arbitrate between his brothers?
But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment.
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not
divorce her.
And this I
speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a
snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction.
I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but in order to promote proper
decorum and undivided devotion to the Lord.
Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should
plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be
partaker of his hope.
Isn’t He actually
speaking on our behalf? Indeed, this was written for us, because when the
plowman plows and the
thresher threshes, they should also expect to share in the harvest.
I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
I
speak to reasonable people; judge for
yourselves what I say.
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man
speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus
accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
Therefore I inform you that no one who is
speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be
cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.
To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another
discerning of spirits; to another
divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in various tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.
Though I
speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a
tinkling cymbal.
If I
speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a ringing
gong or a
clanging cymbal.
For he that
speaketh in an unknown tongue
speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him;
howbeit in the spirit he
speaketh mysteries.
For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
But he who prophesies
speaks to men for their
edification, encouragement, and comfort.
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church.
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye
prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that
speaketh with tongues, except he
interpret, that the church may receive
edifying.
I wish that all of you could
speak in tongues, but I would rather have you
prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who
speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be
edified.
Now, brethren, if I come unto you
speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall
speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by
prophesying, or by doctrine?
Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
So it is with you. Unless you
speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will
anyone know what you are saying? You will just be
speaking into the air.
Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that
speaketh a
barbarian, and he that
speaketh shall be a
barbarian unto me.
If, then, I do not know the meaning of someone’s language, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me.
