And
wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made
thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
Wherever the sons of men or beasts of the field or birds of the air dwell, He has given them into your hand and has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.
And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
But after you, there will arise another kingdom, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule the whole earth.
There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon,
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded
thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
But there are some Jews you have appointed to
manage the province of Babylon—
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego—who have
ignored you, O king, and have refused to serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O
Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer
thee in this matter.
But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”
O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.
“O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no
mystery baffles you. So explain to me the visions I saw in my dream, and their interpretation.
This dream I king
Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof,
forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in
thee.
This is the dream that I, King
Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the wise men of my kingdom can
interpret it for me. But you are able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was
astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble
thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that
hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
For a time, Daniel, who was also known as Belteshazzar, was
perplexed, and his thoughts
alarmed him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation
alarm you.” “My lord,” replied Belteshazzar, “may the dream apply to those who
hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies!
That they shall drive
thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make
thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet
thee with the
dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over
thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will.
You will be driven away from mankind, and your dwelling will be with the beasts of the field. You will feed on grass like an ox and be
drenched with the
dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.
And whereas they commanded to leave the
stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto
thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.
As for the command to leave the
stump of the tree with its roots, your kingdom will be restored to you as soon as you acknowledge that Heaven rules.
Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto
thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine
iniquities by
shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a
lengthening of thy tranquility.
Therefore, may my advice be pleasing to you, O king. Break away from your sins by doing what is right, and from your
iniquities by showing mercy to the
oppressed. Perhaps there will be an extension of your prosperity.”
While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king
Nebuchadnezzar, to
thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from
thee.
While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven: “It is decreed to you, King
Nebuchadnezzar, that the kingdom has departed from you.
And they shall drive
thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make
thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over
thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to
whomsoever he will.
You will be driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will feed on grass like an ox. And seven times will pass you by, until you acknowledge that the Most High rules over the kingdom of mankind and gives it to whom He wishes.”
Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the
banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble
thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
Hearing the outcry of the king and his nobles, the queen entered the
banquet hall. “O king, may you live
forever!” she said. “Do not let your thoughts
terrify you, or your face grow pale.
I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you, and that you have insight, intelligence, and extraordinary wisdom.
And I have heard of
thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and
dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
But I have heard about you, that you are able to give interpretations and
solve difficult problems. Therefore, if you can read this inscription and give me its interpretation, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
But hast lifted up
thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before
thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have
drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not
glorified:
Instead, you have
exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you
drank wine from them with your nobles, wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you have failed to
glorify the God who holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.
All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that
whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of
thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
All the royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers, and governors have agreed that the king should establish an
ordinance and
enforce a decree that for thirty days
anyone who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions.
Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it cannot be
repealed.”
Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
Then they told the king, “Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, shows no regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed. He still makes his petition three times a day.”
Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.
So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the den of lions. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you!”
And when he came to the den, he
cried with a
lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver
thee from the lions?
When he reached the den, he
cried out in a voice of
anguish, “O Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?”
My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions mouths, that they have not
hurt me:
forasmuch as before him
innocency was found in me; and also before
thee, O king, have I done no
hurt.
My God sent His angel and shut the mouths of the lions. They have not
hurt me, for I was found innocent in His sight, and I have done no wrong against you, O king.”
And he said, Behold, I will make
thee know what shall be in the last end of the
indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.
and said, “Behold, I will make known to you what will happen in the latter time of wrath, because it concerns the appointed time of the end.
O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto
thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries
whither thou hast driven them, because of their
trespass that they have
trespassed against
thee.
To You, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but this day we are covered with shame—the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, and all Israel near and far, in all the countries to which You have driven us because of our unfaithfulness to You.
O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have
sinned against
thee.
O LORD, we are covered with shame—our kings, our leaders, and our fathers—because we have
sinned against You.
And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast
gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have
sinned, we have done wickedly.
Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and who made for
Yourself a name
renowned to this day, we have
sinned; we have acted wickedly.
O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I
beseech thee, let thine anger and thy
fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the
iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, I pray that Your anger and wrath may turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the
iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all around us.
O my God,
incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before
thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great
mercies.
Incline Your ear, O my God, and hear; open Your eyes and see the
desolation of the city that bears Your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before You because of our righteous acts, but because of Your great
compassion.
And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
He
instructed me and spoke with me, saying: “O Daniel, I have come now to give you insight and understanding.
At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to
shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
At the beginning of your petitions, an answer went out, and I have come to tell you, for you are highly precious. So consider the message and understand the vision:
And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto
thee, and stand upright: for unto
thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood
trembling.
He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious. Consider carefully the words that I am about to say to you. Stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had said this to me, I stood up
trembling.
Now I am come to make
thee understand what shall
befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.
Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision concerns those days.”
And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto
thee, be strong,
yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.
“Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,” he said. “Peace be with you! Be strong now; be very strong!” As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.”
Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto
thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of
Grecia shall come.
“Do you know why I have come to you?” he said. “I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I have gone forth, behold, the prince of Greece will come.
But I will
shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
But first I will tell you what is inscribed in the Book of Truth. Yet no one has the courage to support me against these, except Michael your prince.
And now will I
shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall
stir up all against the realm of
Grecia.
Now then, I will tell you the truth: Three more kings will arise in Persia, and then a fourth, who will be far richer than all the others. By the power of his wealth, he will
stir up
everyone against the kingdom of Greece.
The beginning of the word of the LORD by
Hosea. And the LORD said to
Hosea, Go, take unto
thee a wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great
whoredom, departing from the LORD.
And I will
betroth thee unto me for ever;
yea, I will
betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in
mercies.
I will even
betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the LORD.
And I will
betroth you in faithfulness, and you will know the LORD.”
And I said unto her, Thou shalt
abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the
harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for
thee.
Then I said to her, “You must live with me for many days; you must not be
promiscuous or belong to another, and I will do the same for you.”
Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.
You will
stumble by day, and the prophet will
stumble with you by night; so I will destroy your mother—
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also
reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also
forget thy children.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also
reject you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also
forget your children.
Blow the ram’s horn in Gibeah, the
trumpet in
Ramah; raise the battle cry in Beth-
aven: Lead on, O Benjamin!
O Ephraim, what shall I do unto
thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto
thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early
dew it goeth away.
What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? For your
loyalty is like a morning
mist, like the early
dew that vanishes.
Also, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people.
Also for you, O Judah, a harvest is appointed, when I restore My people from captivity.
Israel shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee.
Israel
cries out to Me, “O our God, we know You!”
Thy
calf, O Samaria, hath cast
thee off; mine anger is
kindled against them: how long will it be
ere they attain to
innocency?
He has rejected your
calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of
innocence?
How shall I give
thee up, Ephraim? how shall I deliver
thee, Israel? how shall I make
thee as Admah? how shall I set
thee as
Zeboim? mine heart is turned within me, my repentings are
kindled together.
How could I give you up, O Ephraim? How could I surrender you, O Israel? How could I make you like Admah? How could I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart is turned within Me; My
compassion is
stirred!
I will not
execute the fierceness of mine anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of
thee: and I will not enter into the city.
I will not
execute the full
fury of My anger; I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man— the Holy One among you— and I will not come in wrath.
And I that am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast.
But I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt. I will again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast.
I did know
thee in the wilderness, in the land of great
drought.
I knew you in the wilderness, in the land of
drought.
I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?
Where is your king now to save you in all your cities, and the rulers to whom you said, “Give me a king and princes”?
I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.
So in My anger I gave you a king, and in My wrath I took him away.
Asshur shall not save us; we will not
ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in
thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
Assyria will not save us, nor will we
ride on horses. We will never again say, ‘Our gods!’ to the work of our own hands. For in You the fatherless find
compassion.”
O LORD, to
thee will I cry: for the fire hath
devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.
To You, O LORD, I call, for fire has consumed the open pastures and flames have
scorched all the trees of the field.
The beasts of the field cry also unto
thee: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire hath
devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
Even the beasts of the field
pant for You, for the streams of water have dried up, and fire has consumed the open pastures.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An
adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from
thee, and thy palaces shall be
spoiled.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: “An enemy will
surround the land; he will pull down your strongholds and
plunder your citadels.”
Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
“Therefore, that is what I will do to you, O Israel, and since I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel!
And in all vineyards shall be
wailing: for I will pass through
thee, saith the LORD.
There will be
wailing in all the vineyards, for I will pass through your midst,” says the LORD.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD must not be
invoked.”
And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD,
forgive, I
beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
And when the locusts had eaten every green plant in the land, I said, “Lord GOD, please
forgive! How will Jacob
survive, since he is so small?”
Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I
beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.
Then I said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob
survive, since he is so small?”
Then
Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,
Amos hath
conspired against
thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
Then
Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent word to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “
Amos has
conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words,
Behold, I have made
thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly
despised.
“Behold, I will make you small among the nations; you will be deeply
despised.
The pride of thine heart hath
deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose
habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
The pride of your heart has
deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks whose
habitation is the heights, who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’
Though thou
exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring
thee down, saith the LORD.
Though you
soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, even from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.
If
thieves came to
thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have
stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to
thee, would they not leave some grapes?
“If
thieves came to you, if robbers by night— oh, how you will be ruined— would they not
steal only what they wanted? If
grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings?
All the men of thy
confederacy have brought
thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with
thee have
deceived thee, and prevailed against
thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under
thee: there is none understanding in him.
All the men allied with you will drive you to the border; the men at peace with you will
deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a
trap for you without your awareness of it.
For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame and cut off
forever.
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
For the Day of the LORD is near for all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your
recompense will return upon your own head.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto
thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous.
Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to
Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
Wherefore they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We
beseech thee, O LORD, we
beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased
thee.
So they
cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
When my soul
fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto
thee, into thine holy temple.
As my life was
fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple.
But I will sacrifice unto
thee with the voice of
thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have
vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
But I, with the voice of
thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will
fulfill what I have
vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
Arise, go unto
Nineveh, that great city, and
preach unto it the preaching that I
bid thee.
“Get up! Go to the great city of
Nineveh and
proclaim to it the message that I give you.”
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray
thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest
thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
Therefore now, O LORD, take, I
beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
And now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
O thou inhabitant of
Lachish, bind the
chariot to the swift beast: she is the beginning of the sin to the daughter of
Zion: for the transgressions of Israel were found in
thee.
Harness your
chariot horses, O dweller of
Lachish. You were the beginning of sin to the Daughter of
Zion, for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.
Yet will I bring an heir unto
thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto
Adullam the glory of Israel.
I will again bring a conqueror against you, O dweller of Mareshah. The glory of Israel will come to
Adullam.
Make
thee bald, and
poll thee for thy delicate children;
enlarge thy
baldness as the eagle; for they are gone into captivity from
thee.
If a man walking in the spirit and
falsehood do lie, saying, I will
prophesy unto
thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.
If a man of wind were to come and say falsely, “I will
preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be just the preacher for this people!
I will surely
assemble, O Jacob, all of
thee; I will surely gather the
remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of
Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men.
I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; I will collect the
remnant of Israel. I will bring them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in the midst of its pasture— a
noisy throng.
And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of
Zion, unto
thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
And you, O
watchtower of the flock, O
stronghold of the Daughter of
Zion— the former dominion will be restored to you; sovereignty will come to the Daughter of Jerusalem.”
Now why
dost thou cry out
aloud? is there no king in
thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken
thee as a woman in
travail.
Why do you now cry
aloud? Is there no king among you? Has your
counselor perished so that
anguish grips you like a woman in labor?
Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of
Zion, like a woman in
travail: for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall
redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies.
Writhe in
agony, O Daughter of
Zion, like a woman in labor. For now you will leave the city and camp in the open fields. You will go to Babylon; there you will be
rescued; there the LORD will
redeem you from the hand of your enemies!
Now also many nations are gathered against
thee, that say, Let her be
defiled, and let our eye look upon
Zion.
But now many nations have assembled against you, saying, “Let her be
defiled, and let us feast our eyes on
Zion.”
But thou,
Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of
thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from
everlasting.
But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel— One whose origins are of old, from the days of
eternity.
And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of
thee, and I will destroy thy
chariots:
“In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will remove your horses from among you and
wreck your
chariots.
Thy
graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of
thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.
I will also cut off the carved images and sacred pillars from among you, so that you will no longer bow down to the work of your own hands.
And I will
pluck up thy groves out of the midst of
thee: so will I destroy thy cities.
I will root out the Asherah poles from your midst and
demolish your cities.
O my people, what have I done unto
thee? and wherein have I
wearied thee?
testify against me.
‘My people, what have I done to you?
Testify against Me how I have
wearied you!
For I brought
thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed
thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before
thee Moses, Aaron, and
Miriam.
For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery. I sent Moses before you, as well as Aaron and
Miriam.
He hath shewed
thee, O man, what is good; and what
doth the LORD require of
thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk
humbly with thy God?
He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk
humbly with your God?
Therefore also will I make
thee sick in
smiting thee, in making
thee desolate because of thy sins.
Therefore I am striking you severely, to ruin you because of your sins.
Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.
You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger will remain with you. What you acquire, you will not preserve; and what you save, I will give to the sword.
Thou shalt
sow, but thou shalt not
reap; thou shalt
tread the olives, but thou shalt not
anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine.
For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of
Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make
thee a
desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an
hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
You have kept the statutes of Omri and all the practices of
Ahab’s house; you have followed their counsel. Therefore I will make you a
desolation, and your inhabitants an object of contempt; you will bear the
scorn of the nations.”
