Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
And they that use this world, as not
abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.
and those who use the things of this world, as if not dependent on them. For this world in its present form is passing away.
But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
I want you to be free from
concern. The unmarried man is concerned about the work of the Lord, how he can please the Lord.
But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.
But the married man is concerned about the affairs of this world, how he can please his wife,
There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.
However, if someone
thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his
betrothed, and if she is beyond her youth and they ought to marry, let him do as he wishes; he is not
sinning; they should get married.
But she is happier if she so
abide, after my judgment: and I
think also that I have the Spirit of God.
In my judgment, however, she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
The one who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know.
As concerning therefore the eating of those
things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an
idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
So about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an
idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.
But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we exist. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we exist.
Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the
idol unto this hour eat it as a
thing offered unto an
idol; and their conscience being weak is
defiled.
But not
everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that they eat such food as if it were sacrificed to an
idol. And since their conscience is weak, it is
defiled.
For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the
idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be
emboldened to eat those
things which are offered to idols;
For if someone with a weak conscience sees you who are well informed eating in an
idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged to eat food sacrificed to idols?
Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
Do I say this from a human
perspective? Doesn’t the Law say the same
thing?
If we have sown unto you spiritual
things, is it a great
thing if we shall
reap your
carnal things?
If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much for us to
reap a material harvest from you?
If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
If others have this right to your support, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not exercise this right. Instead, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.
Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
Do you not know that those who work in the temple eat of its food, and those who serve at the altar
partake of its offerings?
But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this to suggest that something be done for me. Indeed, I would rather die than let
anyone nullify my
boast.
For if I do this
thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a
dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
If my preaching is voluntary, I have a reward. But if it is not voluntary, I am still entrusted with a
responsibility.
To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
To the weak I became weak, to
win the weak. I have become all
things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.
And every man that striveth for the
mastery is temperate in all
things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
Everyone who competes in the games trains with strict discipline. They do it for a crown that is perishable, but we do it for a crown that is imperishable.
Now these
things were our examples, to the intent we should not
lust after evil
things, as they also
lusted.
These
things took place as examples to keep us from
craving evil
things as they did.
Now all these
things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our
admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
Now these
things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the
fulfillment of the ages has come.
Wherefore let him that
thinketh he standeth take
heed lest he fall.
So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall.
What say I then? that the
idol is any
thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any
thing?
Am I suggesting, then, that food sacrificed to an
idol is anything, or that an
idol is anything?
But I say, that the
things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have
fellowship with devils.
No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God. And I do not want you to be participants with demons.
All
things are lawful for me, but all
things are not expedient: all
things are lawful for me, but all
things edify not.
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience?
the other one’s conscience, I mean, not your own. For why should my freedom be determined by someone else’s conscience?
Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
as I also try to please
everyone in all I do. For I am not seeking my own good, but the good of many, that they may be saved.
Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
Now I
commend you for remembering me in everything and for maintaining the traditions, just as I passed them on to you.
For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
For just as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.
And there are
diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
There are different ways of working, but the same God works all things in all people.
And those members of the body, which we
think to be less honourable, upon these we
bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant
comeliness.
and the parts we consider less honorable, we treat with greater honor. And our unpresentable parts are treated with special
modesty,
Doth not
behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily
provoked,
thinketh no evil;
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs.
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away
childish things.
When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I set aside
childish ways.
And even
things without life giving sound, whether pipe or
harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or
harped?
Even in the case of lifeless instruments, such as the
flute or
harp, how will
anyone recognize the
tune they are playing unless the notes are distinct?
Brethren, be not children in understanding:
howbeit in
malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Brothers, stop
thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your
thinking be
mature.
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a
psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all
things be done unto
edifying.
What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together,
everyone has a
psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church.
If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
And if a revelation comes to someone who is seated, the first speaker should stop.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
If they wish to inquire about something, they are to ask their own husbands at home; for it is dishonorable for a woman to speak in the church.
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
If
anyone considers himself a prophet or spiritual person, let him acknowledge that what I am writing you is the Lord’s command.
Let all things be done decently and in order.
But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner.
For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
For “God has put everything under His feet.” Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him.
And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
And when all things have been subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will be made subject to Him who put all things under Him, so that God may be all in all.
Else what shall they do which are
baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then
baptized for the dead?
If these
things are not so, what will those do who are
baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people
baptized for them?
Let all your things be done with charity.
Do everything in love.
For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;
For we do not write you anything that is beyond your ability to read and understand. And I hope that you will understand us completely,
When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the
things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be
yea yea, and
nay nay?
When I
planned this, did I do it
carelessly? Or do I make my plans by human standards, so as to say “
Yes,
yes” when I really mean “No, no”?
For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be
obedient in all
things.
My purpose in writing you was to see if you would stand the test and be
obedient in everything.
To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
To the one, we are an
odor of death and
demise; to the other, a
fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a task?
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to
think any
thing as of ourselves; but our
sufficiency is of God;
Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim that anything comes from us, but our
competence comes from God.
Instead, we have
renounced secret and shameful ways. We do not practice
deceit, nor do we
distort the word of God. On the contrary, by open
proclamation of the truth, we
commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.
For all
things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the
thanksgiving of many
redound to the glory of God.
All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is extending to more and more people may overflow in
thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Now he that hath wrought us for the
selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
And God has prepared us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a
pledge of what is to come.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Therefore if
anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!
And all
things are of God, who hath
reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of
reconciliation;
Giving no offence in any
thing, that the ministry be not
blamed:
We put no
obstacle in
anyone’s way, so that no one can discredit our ministry.
As sorrowful, yet
alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all
things.
sorrowful, yet always
rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
“Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.”
For behold this
selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you,
yea, what clearing of
yourselves,
yea, what
indignation,
yea, what fear,
yea, what
vehement desire,
yea, what zeal,
yea, what
revenge! In all
things ye have approved
yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear
yourselves, what
indignation, what
alarm, what longing, what zeal, what
vindication! In every way you have proved
yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
For if I have
boasted any
thing to him of you, I am not
ashamed; but as we spake all
things to you in truth, even so our
boasting, which I made before
Titus, is found a truth.
Indeed, I was not
embarrassed by anything I had
boasted to him about you. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our
boasting to
Titus has proved to be true as well.
I
rejoice therefore that I have confidence in you in all
things.
I
rejoice that I can have complete confidence in you.
Therefore, as ye abound in every
thing, in faith, and
utterance, and knowledge, and in all
diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
But just as you
excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in the love we inspired in you—see that you also
excel in this grace of giving.
Providing for
honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men.
And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have
oftentimes proved
diligent in many
things, but now much more
diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.
And we are sending along with them our brother whose earnestness has been
proven many times and in many ways, and now even more so by his great confidence in you.
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all
sufficiency in all
things, may abound to every good work:
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
You will be enriched in every way to be generous on every occasion, so that through us your giving will produce
thanksgiving to God.
But I
beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence,
wherewith I
think to be bold against some, which
think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
I
beg you that when I come I may not need to be as bold as I expect toward those who
presume that we live according to the flesh.
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ’s, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s.
You are looking at outward appearances. If
anyone is
confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself that we belong to Christ just as much as he does.
Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
Such people should consider that what we are in our letters when absent, we will be in our actions when present.
But we will not
boast of
things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
We, however, will not
boast beyond our limits, but only within the field of influence that God has assigned to us—a field that reaches even to you.
Not
boasting of
things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
Neither do we
boast beyond our limits in the labors of others. But we hope that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you will greatly increase as well,
To
preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to
boast in another man’s line of
things made ready to our hand.
so that we can
preach the gospel in the regions beyond you. Then we will not be
boasting in the work already done in another man’s territory.
But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things.
Although I am not a polished speaker, I am certainly not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every way possible.
And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from
Macedonia supplied: and in all
things I have kept myself from being
burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden to
anyone; for the brothers who came from
Macedonia supplied my needs. I have
refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and I will continue to do so.
But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.
But I will keep on doing what I am doing, in order to undercut those who want an opportunity to be regarded as our equals in the
things of which they
boast.
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
It is not surprising, then, if his servants
masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.
I say again, Let no man
think me a
fool; if otherwise, yet as a
fool receive me, that I may
boast myself a little.
I
repeat: Let no one take me for a
fool. But if you do, then receive me as a
fool, so that I too may
boast a little.
Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
Apart from these external trials, I face daily the pressure of my
concern for all the churches.
If I must
boast, I will
boast of the
things that show my weakness.
How that he was caught up into
paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
was caught up to
Paradise. The
things he heard were too sacred for words,
things that man is not permitted to tell.
For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest any man should
think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I wanted to
boast, I would not be a
fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
For this
thing I
besought the Lord
thrice, that it might depart from me.
Three times I
pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
Again,
think ye that we
excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all
things,
dearly beloved, for your
edifying.
Have you been
thinking all along that we were making a
defense to you? We speak before God in Christ, and all of this, beloved, is to build you up.
Therefore I write these
things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to
edification, and not to destruction.
This is why I write these
things while absent, so that when I am present I will not need to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord gave me for building you up, not for
tearing you down.
Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.
I
assure you before God that what I am writing to you is no lie.
Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
They only asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
For if I build again the
things which I destroyed, I make myself a
transgressor.
If I rebuild what I have already
torn down, I prove myself to be a
lawbreaker.
This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
Have you suffered so much for nothing, if it really was for nothing?
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the
curse: for it is written,
Cursed is every one that continueth not in all
things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
All who
rely on works of the law are under a
curse. For it is written: “
Cursed is
everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
The law, however, is not based on faith; on the contrary, “The man who does these things will live by them.”
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
But the Scripture pronounces all things confined by sin, so that by faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
But it is good to be
zealously affected always in a good
thing, and not only when I am present with you.
Nevertheless, it is good to be
zealous if it serves a noble purpose—at any time, and not only when I am with you.
Which
things are an
allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount
Sinai, which gendereth to
bondage, which is
Agar.
These
things serve as illustrations, for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount
Sinai and bears children into slavery: This is
Hagar.
