Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou seekest to go to
thine own country? And he answered, Nothing:
howbeit let me go in any wise.
But Pharaoh asked him, “What have you lacked here with me that you suddenly want to go back to your own country?” “Nothing,”
Hadad replied, “but please let me go.”
So when all Israel saw that the king
hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of
Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to
thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.
When all Israel saw that the king had refused to
listen to them, they answered the king: “What portion do we have in David, and what inheritance in the son of
Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So the Israelites went home,
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this
thing is from me. They
hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
that this is what the LORD says: ‘You are not to go up and fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Each of you must return home, for this word is from Me.’” So they
listened to the word of the LORD and turned back according to the word of the LORD.
And this
thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto
Dan.
And this
thing became a sin; the people walked as far as
Dan to worship before one of the
calves.
And the man of God said unto the king, If thou
wilt give me half
thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into
thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
After this
thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places:
whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.
Even after these events,
Jeroboam did not
repent of his evil ways, but again he appointed priests for the high places from every class of people. He ordained
anyone who desired to be a priest of the high places.
And this
thing became sin unto the house of
Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
And this was the sin of the house of
Jeroboam that led to its
extermination and destruction from the face of the earth.
And the LORD said unto
Ahijah, Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam cometh to ask a
thing of thee for her son; for he is sick: thus and thus shalt thou say unto her: for it shall be, when she cometh in, that she shall
feign herself to be another woman.
But the LORD had said to
Ahijah, “Behold, the wife of
Jeroboam is coming to ask you about her son, for he is ill. You are to say such and such to her, because when she arrives, she will be
disguised.”
Arise thou therefore, get thee to thine own house: and when thy feet enter into the city, the child shall die.
As for you, get up and go home. When your feet enter the city, the child will die.
And all Israel shall
mourn for him, and
bury him: for he only of
Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him there is found some good
thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of
Jeroboam.
All Israel will
mourn for him and
bury him. For this is the only one belonging to
Jeroboam who will receive a proper burial, because only in him has the LORD, the God of Israel, found any good in the house of
Jeroboam.
Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD and had not turned aside from anything the LORD commanded all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.
And he brought in the things which his father had dedicated, and the things which himself had dedicated, into the house of the LORD, silver, and gold, and vessels.
And he brought into the house of the LORD the silver and gold and other articles that he and his father had dedicated.
And it came to pass, as if it had been a light
thing for him to walk in the sins of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife
Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served
Baal, and worshipped him.
And as if it were not enough for him to walk in the sins of
Jeroboam son of Nebat, he even married
Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and he then proceeded to serve and worship
Baal.
And as she was going to
fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a
morsel of bread in
thine hand.
And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread.”
And it came to pass after these
things, that the son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so
sore, that there was no breath left in him.
Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that
Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these
things at thy word.
At the time of the evening sacrifice,
Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these
things at Your command.
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down
thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And he said, I have been very
jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have
forsaken thy covenant, thrown down
thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
“I have been very
zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,” he replied, “but the Israelites have
forsaken Your covenant,
torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I am the only one left, and they are seeking my life as well.”
And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.
And the king of Israel replied, “Just as you say, my lord the king: I am yours, along with all that I have.”
Yet I will send my servants unto thee to
morrow about this time, and they shall search
thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that
whatsoever is pleasant in
thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.
But about this time
tomorrow I will send my servants to search your palace and the houses of your servants. They will seize and carry away all that is precious to you.’”
Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Ben-
hadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou
didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this
thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.
So
Ahab answered the messengers of Ben-
hadad, “Tell my lord the king, ‘All that you demanded of your servant the first time I will do, but this
thing I cannot do.’” So the messengers departed and relayed the message to Ben-
hadad.
And, behold, there came a prophet unto
Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into
thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
Meanwhile a prophet approached
Ahab king of Israel and declared, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this entire great army? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this very day, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”
And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:
So do this: Dismiss all the kings from their positions and replace them with other officers.
And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
Then the man of God approached the king of Israel and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not of the valleys, I will deliver all this great army into your hand. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’”
Now the men did
diligently observe whether any
thing would come from him, and did
hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Ben-
hadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Ben-
hadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the
chariot.
Now the men were looking for a sign of hope, and they quickly
grasped at this word and replied, “
Yes, your brother Ben-
hadad.” “Go and get him!” said the king. Then Ben-
hadad came out, and
Ahab had him come up into his
chariot.
And it came to pass after these
things, that
Naboth the Jezreelite had a
vineyard, which was in
Jezreel, hard by the palace of
Ahab king of Samaria.
And
Jezebel his wife said unto him,
Dost thou now
govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let
thine heart be
merry: I will give thee the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite.
But his wife
Jezebel said to him, “Do you not reign over Israel? Get up, eat some food, and be
cheerful, for I will get you the
vineyard of
Naboth the Jezreelite.”
And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs
licked the blood of
Naboth shall dogs
lick thy blood, even
thine.
Tell him that this is what the LORD says: ‘Have you not murdered a man and seized his land?’ Then tell him that this is also what the LORD says: ‘In the place where the dogs
licked up the blood of
Naboth, there also the dogs will
lick up your blood—
yes, yours!’”
I will make your house like that of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and like that of
Baasha son of
Ahijah, because you have
provoked My anger and caused Israel to sin.’
And he did very
abominably in following idols, according to all
things as did the
Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
He committed the most
detestable acts by going after idols, just like the
Amorites whom the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.)
And a certain man drew a bow at a
venture, and
smote the king of Israel between the joints of the
harness: wherefore he said unto the driver of his
chariot, Turn
thine hand, and carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.
However, a certain man drew his bow without taking special aim, and he struck the king of Israel between the joints of his
armor. So the king said to his
charioteer, “Turn around and take me out of the battle, for I am badly wounded!”
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.
“You have requested a difficult
thing,” said
Elijah. “Nevertheless, if you see me as I am taken from you, it will be yours. But if not, then it will not be so.”
And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
This is a simple matter in the sight of the LORD, and He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.
And
Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said,
Thine handmaid hath not any
thing in the house, save a pot of oil.
“How can I help you?” asked
Elisha. “Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She answered, “Your servant has nothing in the house but a
jar of oil.”
And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said,
Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto
thine handmaid.
And
Elisha declared, “At this time next year, you will hold a son in your arms.” “No, my lord,” she said. “Do not lie to your
maidservant, O man of God.”
Then he said to Gehazi,
Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in
thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man,
salute him not; and if any
salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.
So
Elisha said to Gehazi, “
Tie up your garment, take my staff in your hand, and go! If you meet
anyone, do not
greet him, and if
anyone greets you, do not answer him. Then lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had
bid thee do some great
thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?
Naaman’s servants, however, approached him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great
thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be
cleansed’?”
In this
thing the LORD
pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of
Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of
Rimmon, the LORD
pardon thy servant in this
thing.
Yet may the LORD
forgive your servant this one
thing: When my master goes into the temple of
Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my arm, and I bow down in the temple of
Rimmon, may the LORD
forgive your servant in this matter.”
Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was
sore troubled for this
thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not
shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?
For this reason the king of
Aram became
enraged and called his servants to demand of them, “Tell me, which one of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”
Then a lord on whose hand the king
leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this
thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with
thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
But the officer on whose arm the king
leaned answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” “You will see it with your own eyes,” replied
Elisha, “but you will not eat any of it.”
And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now
shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be
hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.
So the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are
starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the field,
thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will take them alive and enter the city.’”
And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
And the officer had answered the man of God, “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” So
Elisha had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!”
Then spake
Elisha unto the woman, whose son he had restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and
thine household, and
sojourn wheresoever thou canst
sojourn: for the LORD hath called for a famine; and it shall also come upon the land seven years.
Now
Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, you and your household; go and live as a foreigner wherever you can. For the LORD has decreed a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great
things that
Elisha hath done.
Now the king had been speaking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God, saying, “Please relate to me all the great
things Elisha has done.”
And the king said unto
Hazael, Take a present in
thine hand, and go, meet the man of God, and
enquire of the LORD by him, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So the king said to
Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand, go to meet the man of God, and inquire of the LORD through him, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
So
Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him, even of every good
thing of Damascus, forty camels’ burden, and came and stood before him, and said, Thy son Ben-
hadad king of Syria hath sent me to thee, saying, Shall I recover of this disease?
So
Hazael went to meet
Elisha, taking with him a gift of forty
camel loads of every good
thing from Damascus. And he went in and stood before him and said, “Your son Ben-
hadad king of
Aram has sent me to ask, ‘Will I recover from this illness?’”
And
Hazael said, But what, is thy servant a dog, that he should do this great
thing? And
Elisha answered, The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria.
“But how could your servant, a mere dog, do such a
monstrous thing?” said
Hazael. And
Elisha answered, “The LORD has shown me that you will be king over
Aram.”
And
Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him,
Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in
thine hand, and go to
Ramoth-
gilead:
Now
Elisha the prophet summoned one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “
Tuck your
cloak under your belt, take this
flask of oil, and go to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And he that was over the house, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and the bringers up of the children, sent to
Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt
bid us; we will not make any king: do thou that which is good in
thine eyes.
So the palace
administrator, the
overseer of the city, the elders, and the guardians sent a message to
Jehu: “We are your servants, and we will do whatever you say. We will not make
anyone king. Do whatever is good in your sight.”
And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he
saluted him, and said to him, Is
thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me
thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the
chariot.
When he left there, he found Jehonadab son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him.
Jehu greeted him and asked, “Is your heart as true to mine as my heart is to yours?” “It is!” Jehonadab replied. “If it is,” said
Jehu, “give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and
Jehu helped him into his
chariot,
And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s house;
and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath shall guard the royal palace,
And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
So the commanders of hundreds did everything that Jehoiada the priest had ordered. Each of them took his men—those coming on duty on the Sabbath and those going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest.
And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the LORD, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the house of the LORD,
Then
Joash said to the priests, “Collect all the money brought as sacred gifts into the house of the LORD—the census money, the money from vows, and the money brought
voluntarily into the house of the LORD.
And Jehoash king of Judah took all the
hallowed things that
Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and
Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own
hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it to
Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.
So King
Joash of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his fathers—
Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and
Ahaziah, the kings of Judah—along with his own consecrated items and all the gold found in the
treasuries of the house of the LORD and the royal palace, and he sent them to
Hazael king of
Aram. So
Hazael withdrew from Jerusalem.
And he said to the king of Israel, Put
thine hand upon the bow. And he put his hand upon it: and
Elisha put his hands upon the king’s hands.
Then
Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So the king put his hand on the bow, and
Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all
things as
Joash his father did.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father David had done. He did everything as his father
Joash had done.
Thou hast indeed
smitten Edom, and
thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and
tarry at home: for why shouldest thou
meddle to thy
hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
You have indeed defeated
Edom, and your heart has become proud. Glory in that and stay at home. Why should you
stir up trouble so that you fall—you and Judah with you?”
And the children of Israel did secretly those
things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the
watchmen to the
fenced city.
The Israelites secretly did
things against the LORD their God that were not right. From
watchtower to fortified city, they built high places in all their cities.
And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked
things to
provoke the LORD to anger:
They burned incense on all the high places like the nations that the LORD had driven out before them. They did wicked
things,
provoking the LORD to anger.
For they served idols,
whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this
thing.
They served idols, although the LORD had told them, “You shall not do this thing.”
LORD, bow down
thine ear, and hear: open, LORD,
thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of
Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.
Whom hast thou reproached and
blasphemed? and against whom hast thou
exalted thy voice, and lifted up
thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Whom have you
taunted and
blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such
things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year
sow ye, and
reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This year you will eat what grows on its own, and in the second year what springs from the same. But in the third year you will
sow and
reap; you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
In those days was
Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set
thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?
And Isaiah had replied, “This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised: Would you like the shadow to go forward ten steps, or back ten steps?”
And
Hezekiah answered, It is a light
thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees:
nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.
“It is easy for the shadow to
lengthen ten steps,” answered
Hezekiah, “but not for it to go back ten steps.”
And
Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious
things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And
Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his
armory—all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
And he said, What have they seen in
thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All the
things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.
The time will surely come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.
Because
thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled
thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a
desolation and a
curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and
wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.
because your heart was tender and you humbled
yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its people, that they would become a
desolation and a
curse, and because you have
torn your clothes and
wept before Me, I have heard you,’ declares the LORD.
Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
‘Therefore I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the
calamity that I will bring on this place.’” So they brought her answer back to the king.
And as
Josiah turned himself, he
spied the
sepulchres that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the
sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and
polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words.
And as
Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there on the
hillside, and he sent someone to take the bones out of the tombs, and he burned them on the altar to
defile it, according to the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who had
foretold these
things.
Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the
sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these
things that thou hast done against the altar of
Bethel.
Then the king asked, “What is this monument I see?” And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced these
things that you have done to the altar of
Bethel.”
And the firepans, and the
bowls, and such
things as were of gold, in gold, and of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away.
The captain of the guard also took away the censers and
sprinkling bowls—anything made of pure gold or fine silver.
The son of Carmi: Achar, who brought trouble upon Israel by
violating the
ban on devoted
things.
And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest
bless me indeed, and
enlarge my coast, and that
thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not
grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.
And Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only You would
bless me and
enlarge my territory! May Your hand be with me and keep me from
harm, so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted the request of Jabez.
And Jokim, and the men of Chozeba, and
Joash, and Saraph, who had the dominion in Moab, and Jashubi-lehem. And these are ancient
things.
Er the father of Lecah, Laadah the father of Mareshah and the clans of the linen workers at Beth-ashbea, Jokim, the men of Cozeba, and
Joash and Saraph, who ruled in Moab and Jashubi-lehem. (These names are from ancient records.)
And Mattithiah, one of the Levites, who was the
firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, had the set office over the
things that were made in the pans.
A
Levite named Mattithiah, the
firstborn son of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with
baking the bread.
And said, My God
forbid it me, that I should do this
thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in
jeopardy? for with the
jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These
things did these three mightiest.
saying, “Far be it from me, my God, to do this! How can I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives?” Because they had brought it at the risk of their lives, David refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
These
things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three
mighties.
These were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who won a name
alongside the three mighty men.
Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said,
Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of
Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to
thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.
Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, the chief of the Thirty, and he said: “We are yours, O David! We are with you, O son of
Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you.” So David received them and made them leaders of his troops.
And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
And because this proposal seemed right to all the people, the whole assembly agreed to it.
And David enquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and
wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto him, Go up; for I will deliver them into
thine hand.
So David inquired of God, “Should I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?” “Go,” replied the LORD, “for I will deliver them into your hand.”
Then
Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in
thine heart; for God is with thee.
And
Nathan replied to David, “Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you.”
And I have been with thee
whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all
thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will
subdue all
thine enemies.
Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house.
and have done since the day I appointed judges over My people Israel. And I will
subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the LORD will build a house for you.
And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant’s house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God.
And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O God, You have spoken about the future of the house of Your servant and have regarded me as a man of great distinction, O LORD God.
O LORD, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
O LORD. For the sake of Your servant and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and revealed all Your greatness.
For thy people Israel
didst thou make
thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God.
For You have made Your people Israel Your very own
forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God.
Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.
And now, O LORD, let the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house be established
forever. Do as You have promised,
But the princes of the children of
Ammon said to Hanun,
Thinkest thou that David
doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to
spy out the land?
the princes of the
Ammonites said to Hanun, “Just because David has sent you comforters, do you really believe he is showing respect for your father? Have not his servants come to you to
explore the land,
spy it out, and overthrow it?”
And
Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then
doth my lord require this
thing? why will he be a cause of
trespass to Israel?
But
Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply His troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all servants of my lord? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
And God was displeased with this
thing; therefore he
smote Israel.
This command was also evil in the sight of God; so He struck Israel.
And David said unto God, I have
sinned greatly, because I have done this
thing: but now, I
beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very
foolishly.
Then David said to God, “I have
sinned greatly because I have done this
thing. Now I
beg You to take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have acted very
foolishly.”
Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
Either three years’ famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of
thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the
pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore
advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.
between three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies and overtaken by their swords, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague upon the land, with the angel of the LORD
ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD
beheld, and he
repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now
thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Then God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem, but as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and relented from the
calamity, and He said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” At that time the angel of the LORD was standing by the
threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have
sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let
thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not let this plague remain upon Your people.”
And king David said to Ornan,
Nay; but I will
verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is
thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.
“No,” replied King David, “I
insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the LORD what belongs to you, nor will I offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”
