Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.
You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
So that thou
incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply
thine heart to understanding;
if you
incline your ear to wisdom and direct your heart to understanding,
When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will delight your soul.
My son,
forget not my law; but let
thine heart keep my commandments:
My son, do not
forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments;
Let not mercy and truth
forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of
thine heart:
Never let loving devotion or faithfulness leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the
tablet of your heart.
Trust in the LORD with all
thine heart; and
lean not unto
thine own understanding.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and
lean not on your own understanding;
Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil.
Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest;
My son, let not them depart from
thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and
discretion:
My son, do not lose sight of this: Preserve sound judgment and
discernment.
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of
thine hand to do it.
Do not
withhold good from the deserving when it is within your power to act.
He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
he taught me and said, “Let your heart lay hold of my words; keep my commands and you will live.
She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
She will set a
garland of grace on your head; she will present you with a crown of beauty.”
My son, attend to my words;
incline thine ear unto my sayings.
My son, pay attention to my words;
incline your ear to my sayings.
Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
Do not lose sight of them; keep them within your heart.
Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Let your eyes look forward; fix your
gaze straight
ahead.
My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
incline your ear to my insight,
Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:
lest you
concede your
vigor to others, and your years to one who is cruel;
Drink waters out of
thine own
cistern, and running waters out of
thine own well.
Drink water from your own
cistern, and running water from your own well.
Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.
Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers.
Give not sleep to
thine eyes, nor
slumber to
thine eyelids.
Allow no sleep to your eyes or
slumber to your eyelids.
Bind them continually upon
thine heart, and
tie them about thy neck.
Bind them always upon your heart;
tie them around your neck.
Lust not after her beauty in
thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
Do not
lust in your heart for her beauty or let her
captivate you with her eyes.
Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
Keep my commandments and live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
Tie them to your fingers; write them on the
tablet of your heart.
Let not
thine heart decline to her ways, go not
astray in her paths.
Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways; do not
stray into her paths.
Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
Do not love sleep, or you will grow poor; open your eyes, and you will have
plenty of food.
Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.
Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise— apply your mind to my knowledge—
Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.
Wilt thou set
thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
When you
glance at wealth, it disappears, for it makes wings for itself and
flies like an eagle to the sky.
Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.
My son, if
thine heart be wise, my heart shall
rejoice, even mine.
My son, if your heart is wise, my own heart will indeed
rejoice.
Let not
thine heart
envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
Do not let your heart
envy sinners, but always continue in the fear of the LORD.
For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
For surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
Listen, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart on the right course.
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in my ways.
Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and
thine heart shall utter
perverse things.
Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will utter perversities.
Rejoice not when
thine enemy falleth, and let not
thine heart be
glad when he stumbleth:
Do not
gloat when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart
rejoice when he stumbles,
Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for
thyself in the field; and afterwards build
thine house.
Complete your outdoor work and prepare your field; after that, you may build your house.
For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up
hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom
thine eyes have seen.
for it is better that he says to you, “Come up here!” than that you should be demoted in the presence of the prince. Even what you have seen with your own eyes,
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and
thine infamy turn not away.
lest the one who hears may disgrace you, and your
infamy never go away.
If
thine enemy be
hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be
thirsty, give him water to drink:
If your enemy is
hungry, give him food to eat, and if he is
thirsty, give him water to drink.
Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth— a stranger, and not your own lips.
Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend,
forsake not; neither go into thy brother’s house in the day of thy
calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
Do not
forsake your friend or your father’s friend, and do not go to your brother’s house in the day of your
calamity; better a
neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
If thou hast done
foolishly in lifting up
thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay
thine hand upon thy mouth.
Be not
rash with thy mouth, and let not
thine heart be
hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
Do not be quick to speak, and do not be
hasty in your heart to utter a word before God. After all, God is in heaven and you are on earth. So let your words be few.
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be
angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of
thine hands?
Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, and do not tell the
messenger that your
vow was a mistake. Why should God be
angry with your words and destroy the work of your hands?
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this;
yea, also from this withdraw not
thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
It is good to
grasp the one and not let the other slip from your hand. For he who fears God will follow both warnings.
For you know in your heart that many times you
yourself have
cursed others.
In the morning
sow thy seed, and in the evening
withhold not
thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall
prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
Sow your seed in the morning, and do not rest your hands in the evening, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or if both will equally
prosper.
Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart
cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of
thine heart, and in the sight of
thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
Rejoice, O young man, while you are young, and let your heart be
glad in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and in the sight of your eyes, but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment.
Thou hast
ravished my heart, my sister, my
spouse; thou hast
ravished my heart with one of
thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.
You have captured my heart, my sister, my
bride; you have
stolen my heart with one
glance of your eyes, with one
jewel of your neck.
How fair is thy love, my sister, my
spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of
thine ointments than all spices!
How delightful is your love, my sister, my
bride! Your love is much better than wine, and the
fragrance of your
perfume than all spices.
Turn away
thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from
Gilead.
Turn your eyes away from me, for they have overcome me. Your hair is like a flock of goats streaming down from
Gilead.
Thy neck is as a tower of ivory;
thine eyes like the fishpools in
Heshbon, by the gate of Bath-rabbim: thy nose is as the tower of
Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.
Your neck is like a tower made of ivory; your eyes are like the pools of
Heshbon by the gate of Bath-rabbim; your nose is like the tower of
Lebanon, facing toward Damascus.
Thine head upon thee is like
Carmel, and the hair of
thine head like purple; the king is held in the
galleries.
Your head crowns you like Mount
Carmel, the hair of your head like purple threads; the king is captured in your tresses.
Set me as a seal upon
thine heart, as a seal upon
thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most
vehement flame.
Set me as a seal over your heart, as a seal upon your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as
unrelenting as
Sheol. Its sparks are
fiery flames, the fiercest
blaze of all.
And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and
thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin
purged.
And with it he touched my mouth and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is
atoned for.”
And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou
wast angry with me,
thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.
In that day you will say: “O LORD, I will praise You. Although You were
angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me.
For thou hast said in
thine heart, I will
ascend into heaven, I will
exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
You said in your heart: “I will
ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of assembly, in the far reaches of the north.
LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be
ashamed for their
envy at the people;
yea, the fire of
thine enemies shall
devour them.
O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but they do not see it. They will see Your zeal for Your people and be put to shame. The fire set for Your enemies will
consume them!
And though the Lord give you the bread of
adversity, and the water of
affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but
thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
The Lord will give you the bread of
adversity and the water of
affliction, but your Teacher will no longer hide Himself—with your own eyes you will see Him.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
And whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.”
Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.
Your eyes will see the King in His beauty and behold a land that stretches
afar.
Thine heart shall
meditate terror. Where is the
scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers?
Your mind will
ponder the former terror: “Where is he who
tallies? Where is he who weighs? Where is he who counts the towers?”
Look upon
Zion, the city of our
solemnities:
thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet
habitation, a tabernacle that shall not be taken down; not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.
Look upon
Zion, the city of our appointed feasts. Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a peaceful pasture, a tent that does not
wander; its tent pegs will not be pulled up, nor will any of its cords be broken.
Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open
thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of
Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.
Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see.
Listen to all the words that
Sennacherib has sent to
defy the living God.
Whom hast thou reproached and
blasphemed? and against whom hast thou
exalted thy voice, and lifted up
thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
Whom have you
taunted and
blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!
In those days was
Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set
thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
Then said he, What have they seen in
thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.
The time will surely come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.
I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
“I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose, and I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and
appoint you to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations,
Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast
wearied me with
thine iniquities.
You have not bought Me sweet cane with your silver, nor satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened Me with your sins; you have
wearied Me with your
iniquities.
For I will pour water upon him that is
thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon
thine offspring:
For I will pour water on the
thirsty land, and currents on the dry ground. I will pour out My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring.
Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and
merchandise of
Ethiopia and of the
Sabeans, men of
stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be
thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make
supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God.
This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt and the
merchandise of
Cush, along with the
Sabeans, men of
stature, will come over to you and will be yours; they will
trudge behind you; they will come over in chains and bow down to you. They will
confess to you: ‘God is indeed with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’”
I was
wroth with my people, I have
polluted mine inheritance, and given them into
thine hand: thou
didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very
heavily laid thy yoke.
I was
angry with My people; I
profaned My
heritage, and I placed them under your control. You showed them no mercy; even on the elderly you laid a most heavy yoke.
Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest
carelessly, that sayest in
thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:
So now hear this, O lover of
luxury who sits securely, who says to herself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or know the loss of children.’
But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and
widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy
sorceries, and for the great abundance of
thine enchantments.
These two things will overtake you in a moment, in a single day: loss of children, and
widowhood. They will come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many
sorceries and the
potency of your spells.
For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None
seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath
perverted thee; and thou hast said in
thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.
You were secure in your wickedness; you said, ‘No one sees me.’ Your wisdom and knowledge led you
astray; you told
yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me.’
Stand now with
thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy
sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
So take your stand with your spells and with your many
sorceries, with which you have
wearied yourself from your youth. Perhaps you will succeed; perhaps you will
inspire terror!
You have never heard; you have never understood; for a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew how
deceitful you are; you have been called a
rebel from birth.
Lift up
thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the LORD, thou shalt surely
clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a
bride doeth.
Lift up your eyes and look around. They all gather together; they come to you. As surely as I live,” declares the LORD, “you will wear them all as
jewelry and put them on like a
bride.
The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.
Yet the children of your
bereavement will say in your hearing, ‘This place is too small for us; make room for us to live here.’
Then shalt thou say in
thine heart, Who hath
begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am
desolate, a
captive, and removing to and
fro? and who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been?
Then you will say in your heart, ‘Who has
begotten these for me? I was
bereaved and barren; I was exiled and rejected. So who has reared them? Look, I was left all alone, so where did they come from?’”
Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of
thine hand the cup of
trembling, even the
dregs of the cup of my
fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God, who defends His people: “See, I have removed from your hand the cup of
staggering. From that
goblet, the cup of My
fury, you will never drink again.
Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of
thine habitations:
spare not,
lengthen thy cords, and
strengthen thy stakes;
“
Enlarge the site of your tent, stretch out the curtains of your dwellings, do not hold back.
Lengthen your ropes and drive your stakes in deep.
For thy Maker is
thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy
Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.
For your husband is your Maker— the LORD of Hosts is His name— the Holy One of Israel is your
Redeemer; He is called the God of all the earth.
Thou art
wearied in the greatness of thy way; yet saidst thou not, There is no hope: thou hast found the life of
thine hand; therefore thou
wast not
grieved.
You are
wearied by your many journeys, but you did not say, “There is no hope!” You found
renewal of your strength; therefore you did not grow weak.
Is it not to deal thy bread to the
hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not
thyself from
thine own flesh?
Isn’t it to share your bread with the
hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your home, to
clothe the naked when you see him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.
Then your light will break forth like the
dawn, and your
healing will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
If you turn your foot from breaking the Sabbath, from doing as you please on My holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight, and the LORD’s holy day honorable, if you honor it by not going your own way or seeking your own pleasure or speaking idle words,
Lift up
thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be
nursed at thy side.
Lift up your eyes and look around: They all gather and come to you; your sons will come from
afar, and your daughters will be carried on the arm.
Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
Then you will look and be
radiant, and your heart will
tremble and swell with joy, because the riches of the sea will be brought to you, and the wealth of the nations will come to you.
For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver, and for wood brass, and for stones iron: I will also make thy officers peace, and thine exactors righteousness.
Instead of bronze I will bring you gold; I will bring silver in place of iron, bronze instead of wood, and iron instead of stones. I will
appoint peace as your governor and righteousness as your ruler.
Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be
thine everlasting light, and the days of thy
mourning shall be ended.
Your sun will no longer set, and your moon will not
wane; for the LORD will be your
everlasting light, and the days of your sorrow will cease.
The LORD hath
sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for
thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:
The LORD has
sworn by His right hand and by His mighty arm: “Never again will I give your grain to your enemies for food, nor will foreigners drink the new wine for which you have
toiled.
Wherefore art thou red in
thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads the winepress?
O LORD, why hast thou made us to
err from thy ways, and
hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants’ sake, the tribes of
thine inheritance.
Why, O LORD, do You make us
stray from Your ways and
harden our hearts from fearing You? Return, for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your
heritage.
We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.
We have become like those You never ruled, like those not called by Your name.
As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to
boil, to make thy name known to
thine adversaries, that the nations may
tremble at thy presence!
as fire kindles the
brushwood and causes the water to
boil, to make Your name known to Your enemies, so that the nations will
tremble at Your presence!
Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of
thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
“Go and
proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem that this is what the LORD says: ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a
bride, how you followed Me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.
