And Moses
told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people
mourned greatly.
And when Moses relayed these words to all the Israelites, the people
mourned bitterly.
And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up
yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?
They came together against Moses and Aaron and
told them, “You have taken too much upon
yourselves! For
everyone in the entire congregation is holy, and the LORD is in their midst. Why then do you
exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”
But the
tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an
heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to
inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
For I have given to the Levites as their inheritance the
tithe that the Israelites present to the LORD as a contribution. That is why I
told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.”
But
Balaam answered and said unto Balak,
Told not I thee, saying, All that the LORD speaketh, that I must do?
But
Balaam replied, “Did I not tell you that whatever the LORD says, I must do?”
And Moses said unto the judges of Israel,
Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto
Baal-peor.
So Moses
told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men who have joined in worshiping
Baal of Peor.”
For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save
Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of
Nun.
For the LORD had
told them that they would surely die in the wilderness. Not one was left except
Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of
Nun.
And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the LORD commanded Moses.
So Moses spoke all this to the Israelites just as the LORD had commanded him.
And Moses spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of
yourselves unto the war, and let them go against the Midianites, and
avenge the LORD of
Midian.
So Moses
told the people, “Arm some of your men for war, that they may go against the Midianites and
execute the LORD’s
vengeance on them.
Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
See, the LORD your God has placed the land before you. Go up and take possession of it as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has told you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”
And it be
told thee, and thou hast heard of it, and enquired
diligently, and, behold, it be true, and the thing certain, that such
abomination is wrought in Israel:
and if it is reported and you hear about it, you must
investigate it thoroughly. If the report is true and such an
abomination has happened in Israel,
And it was
told the king of
Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in
hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
And it was reported to the king of
Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here
tonight to
spy out the land.”
So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of
Nun, and
told him all things that
befell them:
Then the two men started back, came down from the hill country, and crossed the river. So they came to Joshua son of
Nun and reported all that had happened to them.
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come
hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God.
So Joshua
told the Israelites, “Come here and
listen to the words of the LORD your God.”
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And he said unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is armed pass on before the ark of the LORD.
And he
told the people, “Advance and march around the city, with the armed troops going
ahead of the ark of the LORD.”
But Joshua had said unto the two men that had
spied out the country, Go into the
harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye
sware unto her.
Meanwhile, Joshua
told the two men who had
spied out the land, “Go into the house of the
prostitute and bring out the woman and all who are with her, just as you promised her.”
And Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is beside Beth-
aven, on the east side of
Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed
Ai.
Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is near Beth-
aven to the east of
Bethel, and
told them, “Go up and
spy out the land.” So the men went up and
spied out
Ai.
Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take
victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’
And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly
told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were
sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.
The Gibeonites answered, “Your servants were
told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and
wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
And it was
told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found
hid in a cave at Makkedah.
And Joshua was informed: “The five kings have been found; they are hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”
And Joshua did unto them as the LORD
bade him: he
houghed their horses, and burnt their
chariots with fire.
Joshua treated them as the LORD had
told him; he
hamstrung their horses and burned up their
chariots.
And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:
and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against
yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses.
Then Joshua
told them, “You are witnesses against
yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” “We are witnesses!” they said.
And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.
“Follow me,” he
told them, “for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow
anyone to cross over.
And they shewed Sisera that
Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount
Tabor.
When Sisera was
told that
Barak son of Abinoam had gone up Mount
Tabor,
That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of
bondage;
He sent them a prophet, who told them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I brought you up out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
And
Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this
befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers
told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath
forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.
“Please, my Lord,”
Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all His wonders of which our fathers
told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has
forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of
Midian.”
Then
Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father’s household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.
So
Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD had
told him. But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city, he did it by night rather than in the
daytime.
And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said,
Gideon the son of
Joash hath done this thing.
“Who did this?” they said to one another. And after they had investigated thoroughly, they were
told, “
Gideon son of
Joash did it.”
And when
Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that
told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a
cake of barley bread
tumbled into the host of
Midian, and came unto a tent, and
smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
And as
Gideon arrived, a man was telling his friend about a dream. “Behold, I had a dream,” he said, “and I saw a
loaf of barley bread come
tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent so hard that the tent overturned and
collapsed.”
And he spake also unto the men of Penuel, saying, When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.
So
Gideon told the men of Penuel, “When I return in triumph, I will
tear down this tower!”
And when they
told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount
Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and
cried, and said unto them,
Hearken unto me, ye men of
Shechem, that God may
hearken unto you.
And the men of
Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they
robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was
told Abimelech.
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they
told Abimelech.
The next day the people of
Shechem went out into the fields, and this was reported to
Abimelech.
And it was
told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of
Shechem were gathered together.
And when
Abimelech was
told that all the leaders in the tower of
Shechem were gathered there,
Then said they unto him, Say now
Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to
pronounce it right. Then they took him, and
slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.
they
told him, “Please say
Shibboleth.” If he said, “Sibboleth,” because he could not
pronounce it correctly, they seized him and killed him at the fords of the Jordan. So at that time 42,000 Ephraimites were killed.
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and
told her husband, “A man of God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name.
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her
beware.
So the angel of the LORD answered
Manoah, “Your wife is to do everything I
told her.
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.
So he returned and told his father and mother, “I have seen a daughter of the Philistines in Timnah. Now get her for me as a wife.”
Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the
uncircumcised Philistines? And
Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
But his father and mother replied, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the
uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?” But
Samson told his father, “Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.”
And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he
told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat. But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he
told not them that he had taken the honey out of the
carcase of the lion.
So he
scooped some honey into his hands and
ate it as he went along. And when he returned to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they
ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s
carcass.
And
Samson’s wife
wept before him, and said, Thou
dost but
hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a
riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not
told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not
told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
Then
Samson’s wife came to him,
weeping, and said, “You
hate me! You do not really love me! You have
posed to my people a
riddle, but have not explained it to me.” “Look,” he said, “I have not even explained it to my father or mother, so why should I explain it to you?”
And she
wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he
told her, because she lay
sore upon him: and she
told the
riddle to the children of her people.
She
wept the whole seven days of the feast, and finally on the seventh day, because she had pressed him so much, he
told her the answer. And in turn she explained the
riddle to her people.
Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered,
Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.
“Who did this?” the Philistines demanded. “It was
Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite,” they were
told. “For his wife was given to his companion.” So the Philistines went up and burned her and her father to death.
And
Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be
avenged of you, and after that I will cease.
And
Samson told them, “Because you have done this, I will not rest until I have taken
vengeance upon you.”
And it was
told the Gazites, saying,
Samson is come
hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet all the night, saying, In the morning, when it is day, we shall kill him.
When the Gazites heard that
Samson was there, they surrounded that place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They were quiet throughout the night, saying, “Let us wait until
dawn; then we will kill him.”
And
Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green withs that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man.
Samson told her, “If they
tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And
Delilah said unto
Samson, Hitherto thou hast
mocked me, and
told me lies: tell me
wherewith thou mightest be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the seven locks of my head with the web.
Then
Delilah said to
Samson, “You have
mocked me and
lied to me all along! Tell me how you can be
tied up.” He
told her, “If you
weave the seven braids of my head into the web of a
loom and
tighten it with a pin, I will become as weak as any other man.”
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast
mocked me these three times, and hast not
told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
“How can you say, ‘I love you,’” she asked, “when your heart is not with me? This is the third time you have
mocked me and failed to
reveal to me the source of your great strength!”
That he
told her all his heart, and said unto her. There hath not come a
razor upon mine head; for I have been a
Nazarite unto God from my mother’s
womb: if I be
shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
Samson told her all that was in his heart: “My hair has never been cut, because I have been a
Nazirite to God from my mother’s
womb. If I am
shaved, my strength will leave me, and I will become as weak as any other man.”
And when
Delilah saw that he had
told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
When
Delilah realized that he had revealed to her all that was in his heart, she sent this message to the lords of the Philistines: “Come up once more, for he has revealed to me all that is in his heart.” Then the lords of the Philistines came to her, bringing the money in their hands.
And the children of
Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to
spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of
Micah, they
lodged there.
So the Danites sent out five men from their clans, men of
valor from Zorah and Eshtaol, to
spy out the land and
explore it. “Go and
explore the land,” they
told them. The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of
Micah, where they spent the night.
And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.
And the priest told them, “Go in peace. The LORD is watching over your journey.”
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an
ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his place.
“Get up,” he
told her. “Let us go.” But there was no
response. So the man put her on his
donkey and set out for home.
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou
gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man’s name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.
Then her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you
glean today, and where did you work? Blessed be the man who noticed you.” So she
told her mother-in-law where she had worked. “The name of the man I worked with
today is Boaz,” she said.
And
Ruth the
Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.
Then
Ruth the
Moabitess said, “He also
told me, ‘Stay with my young men until they have finished gathering all my harvest.’”
Also he said, Bring the
vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her: and she went into the city.
And he
told her, “Bring the
shawl you are wearing and hold it out.” When she did so, he
shoveled six measures of barley into her
shawl. Then he went into the city.
And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
When
Ruth returned to her mother-in-law,
Naomi asked her, “How did it go, my daughter?” Then
Ruth told her all that Boaz had done for her.
And there came a man of God unto
Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?
Then a man of God came to
Eli and
told him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Did I not clearly
reveal Myself to your father’s house when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh’s house?
For I have
told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I
told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And Samuel
told him every
whit, and
hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
So Samuel
told him everything and did not hide a thing from him. “He is the LORD,” replied
Eli. “Let Him do what is good in His eyes.”
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching: for his heart
trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and
told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And when
Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this
tumult? And the man came in
hastily, and
told Eli.
And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.
So Samuel spoke all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.
And the LORD said to Samuel,
Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
“
Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “
Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel
told the men of Israel, “
Everyone must go back to his city.”
Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
Now on the day before Saul’s arrival, the LORD had revealed to Samuel,
And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke; he shall rule over My people.”
And Samuel said unto the
cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.
And Samuel said to the
cook, “Bring the portion I gave you and
told you to set aside.”
And Saul said unto his uncle, He
told us plainly that the
asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom,
whereof Samuel spake, he
told him not.
And Saul replied, “He
assured us that the
donkeys had been found.” But Saul did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the
kingship.
Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
Then Samuel explained to the people the rights of
kingship. He wrote them on a
scroll and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, each to his own home.
Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and
told the
tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and
wept.
When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and relayed these words in the hearing of the people, they all
wept aloud.
And, behold, Saul came after the
herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they
weep? And they
told him the
tidings of the men of
Jabesh.
Just then Saul was returning from the field, behind his oxen. “What troubles the people?” asked Saul. “Why are they
weeping?” And they relayed to him the words of the men from
Jabesh.
Now it came to pass upon a day, that
Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he
told not his father.
One day
Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the
Philistine outpost on the other side.” But
Jonathan did not tell his father.
And the men of the garrison answered
Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will
shew you a thing. And
Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
So the men of the outpost called out to
Jonathan and his
armor-bearer, “Come on up, and we will teach you a
lesson!” “Follow me,”
Jonathan told his
armor-bearer, “for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.”
Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying,
Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were
faint.
Then one of the soldiers
told him, “Your father bound the troops with a solemn oath, saying, ‘
Cursed is the man who eats food
today.’ That is why the people are
faint.”
Then they
told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have
transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
Then someone reported to Saul: “Look, the troops are
sinning against the LORD by eating meat with the blood still in it.” “You have broken faith,” said Saul. “Roll a large stone over here at once.”
Then Saul said to
Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And
Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
“Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him. So
Jonathan told him, “I only tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. And now I must die?”
And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was
told Samuel, saying, Saul came to
Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to
Gilgal.
Early in the morning Samuel got up to
confront Saul, but he was
told, “Saul has gone to
Carmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself and has turned and gone down to
Gilgal.”
Again,
Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto
Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
Thus
Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel
told him, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
The people told him about the offer, saying, “That is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.
Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David, and when this was reported to Saul, it pleased him.
And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.
And the servants told Saul what David had said.
And when his servants
told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law: and the days were not
expired.
When the servants reported these terms to David, he was pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. Before the
wedding day arrived,
But
Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and
Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take
heed to
thyself until the morning, and
abide in a secret place, and hide
thyself:
so he
warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret place and hide there.
And
Jonathan called David, and
Jonathan shewed him all those things. And
Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.
So
Jonathan summoned David and
told him all these things. Then
Jonathan brought David to Saul to serve him as he had before.
Saul also sent messengers unto David’s house, to watch him, and to
slay him in the morning: and Michal David’s wife
told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to
morrow thou shalt be slain.
Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and kill him in the morning. But David’s wife Michal
warned him, “If you do not run for your life
tonight,
tomorrow you will be dead!”
And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may
slay him.
But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so I can kill him.”
So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to
Ramah, and
told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.
So David ran away and escaped. And he went to Samuel at
Ramah and
told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.
And it was
told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in
Ramah.
When Saul was
told that David was at Naioth in
Ramah,
And when it was
told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they
prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they
prophesied also.
When this was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they began to
prophesy as well. So Saul tried again and sent messengers a third time, and even they began to
prophesy.
Then went he also to
Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in
Ramah.
Finally, Saul himself left for
Ramah and came to the large
cistern at Secu, where he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?” “At Naioth in
Ramah,” he was
told.
And David said unto
Jonathan, Behold, to
morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.
So David
told him, “Look,
tomorrow is the New Moon, and I am supposed to
dine with the king. Instead, let me go and hide in the field until the third evening from now.
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he did not come to the king’s table.”
And David said unto
Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business
whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
“The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.
That all of you have
conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of
Jesse, and there is none of you that is
sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath
stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
Is that why all of you have
conspired against me? Not one of you
told me that my own son had made a covenant with the son of
Jesse. Not one of you has shown
concern for me or revealed to me that my son has
stirred up my own servant to lie in wait against me, as is the case
today.”
