For the stars of heaven
and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be
darkened in his going forth,
and the moon shall not cause her light to
shine.
For the stars of heaven
and their constellations will not give their light. The rising sun will be
darkened,
and the moon will not give its light.
And I will
punish the world for their evil,
and the wicked for their iniquity;
and I will cause the
arrogancy of the proud to cease,
and will lay low the
haughtiness of the terrible.
I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden
wedge of
Ophir.
I will make man scarcer than pure gold,
and mankind rarer than the gold of
Ophir.
Therefore I will
shake the heavens,
and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts,
and in the day of his fierce anger.
Therefore I will make the heavens
tremble,
and the earth will be
shaken from its place at the wrath of the LORD of Hosts on the day of His burning anger.
And it shall be as the
chased roe,
and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people,
and flee every one into his own land.
Like a
hunted gazelle, like a sheep without a
shepherd, each will return to his own people, each will
flee to his native land.
Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword.
Their children also shall be
dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be
spoiled,
and their wives
ravished.
Their infants will be
dashed to pieces before their eyes, their houses will be
looted,
and their wives will be
ravished.
Behold, I will
stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver;
and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.
Behold, I will
stir up against them the Medes, who have no regard for silver
and no desire for gold.
Their bows also shall
dash the young men to pieces;
and they shall have no
pity on the fruit of the
womb; their eye shall not
spare children.
Their bows will
dash young men to pieces; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the
womb; they will not look with
pity on the children.
And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’
excellency, shall be as when God overthrew
Sodom and Gomorrah.
And Babylon, the
jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be overthrown by God like
Sodom and Gomorrah.
But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there;
and their houses shall be full of
doleful creatures;
and owls shall dwell there,
and satyrs shall dance there.
But desert creatures will lie down there,
and howling creatures will fill her houses. Ostriches will dwell there,
and wild goats will
leap about.
And the wild beasts of the islands shall cry in their
desolate houses,
and dragons in their pleasant palaces:
and her time is near to come,
and her days shall not be prolonged.
Hyenas will
howl in her fortresses
and jackals in her
luxurious palaces. Babylon’s time is at hand,
and her days will not be prolonged.
For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob,
and will yet choose Israel,
and set them in their own land:
and the strangers shall be joined with them,
and they shall
cleave to the house of Jacob.
For the LORD will have
compassion on Jacob; once again He will choose Israel
and settle them in their own land. The foreigner will join them
and unite with the house of Jacob.
And the people shall take them,
and bring them to their place:
and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants
and handmaids:
and they shall take them
captives, whose
captives they were;
and they shall rule over their oppressors.
The nations will
escort Israel
and bring it to its homeland. Then the house of Israel will possess the nations as menservants
and maidservants in the LORD’s land. They will make
captives of their captors
and rule over their oppressors.
And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow,
and from thy fear,
and from the hard
bondage wherein thou
wast made to serve,
On the day that the LORD gives you rest from your pain
and torment,
and from the hard labor into which you were forced,
That thou shalt take up this
proverb against the king of Babylon,
and say, How hath the
oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
you will sing this song of contempt against the king of Babylon: How the
oppressor has ceased,
and how his
fury has ended!
The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked,
and the
sceptre of the rulers.
The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the
scepter of the rulers.
He who
smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is
persecuted,
and none hindereth.
It struck the peoples in anger with unceasing blows; it subdued the nations in
rage with relentless persecution.
The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
All the earth is at peace and at rest; they break out in song.
Yea, the
fir trees
rejoice at thee,
and the cedars of
Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
They will all
respond to you, saying, “You too have become weak, as we are; you have become like us!”
Thy
pomp is brought down to the grave,
and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee,
and the worms cover thee.
Your
pomp has been brought down to
Sheol, along with the music of your harps. Maggots are your bed
and worms your
blanket.
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee,
and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to
tremble, that did
shake kingdoms;
Those who see you will
stare; they will
ponder your fate: “Is this the man who
shook the earth
and made the kingdoms
tremble,
That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
who turned the world into a desert
and destroyed its cities, who refused to let the
captives return to their homes?”
But thou art cast out of thy grave like an
abominable branch,
and as the
raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a
carcase trodden under feet.
But you are cast out of your grave like a rejected branch, covered by those slain with the sword,
and dumped into a rocky pit like a
carcass trampled underfoot.
Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land,
and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be
renowned.
You will not join them in burial, since you have destroyed your land and slaughtered your own people. The offspring of the wicked will never again be mentioned.
For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts,
and cut off from Babylon the name,
and remnant,
and son,
and nephew, saith the LORD.
“I will rise up against them,” declares the LORD of Hosts. “I will cut off from Babylon her name
and her
remnant, her offspring
and her
posterity,” declares the LORD.
I will also make it a possession for the
bittern,
and pools of water:
and I will
sweep it with the
besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.
“I will make her a place for owls
and for swamplands; I will
sweep her away with the
broom of destruction,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
The LORD of hosts hath
sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass;
and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:
The LORD of Hosts has
sworn: “Surely, as I have
planned, so will it be; as I have purposed, so will it stand.
That I will break the Assyrian in my land,
and upon my mountains
tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them,
and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
I will break Assyria in My land; I will
trample him on My mountain. His yoke will be taken off My people,
and his burden removed from their shoulders.”
This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.
This is the plan devised for the whole earth, and this is the hand stretched out over all the nations.
For the LORD of hosts hath purposed,
and who shall
disannul it?
and his hand is stretched out,
and who shall turn it back?
The LORD of Hosts has purposed,
and who can
thwart Him? His hand is outstretched, so who can turn it back?
Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that
smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a
cockatrice,
and his fruit shall be a
fiery flying serpent.
Do not
rejoice, all you Philistines, that the rod that struck you is broken. For a
viper will spring from the root of the
snake,
and a flying serpent from its egg.
And the
firstborn of the poor shall feed,
and the
needy shall lie down in safety:
and I will kill thy root with famine,
and he shall
slay thy
remnant.
Then the
firstborn of the poor will find pasture,
and the
needy will lie down in safety, but I will kill your root by famine,
and your
remnant will be slain.
Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke,
and none shall be alone in his appointed times.
Wail, O gate! Cry out, O city!
Melt away, all you Philistines! For a cloud of smoke comes from the north,
and there are no stragglers in its ranks.
What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded
Zion,
and the poor of his people shall trust in it.
What answer will be given to the envoys of that nation? “The LORD has founded
Zion, where His
afflicted people will find refuge.”
The burden of Moab. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence;
This is the burden against Moab: Ar in Moab is ruined, destroyed in a night! Kir in Moab is
devastated, destroyed in a night!
He is gone up to Bajith,
and to Dibon, the high places, to
weep: Moab shall
howl over
Nebo,
and over Medeba: on all their heads shall be
baldness,
and every
beard cut off.
Dibon goes up to its temple to
weep at its high places. Moab wails over
Nebo, as well as over Medeba. Every head is
shaved, every
beard is cut off.
In their streets they shall
gird themselves with
sackcloth: on the tops of their houses,
and in their streets, every one shall
howl,
weeping abundantly.
In its streets they wear
sackcloth; on the rooftops
and in the public squares they all
wail, falling down
weeping.
And Heshbon shall cry,
and Elealeh: their voice shall be heard even unto Jahaz: therefore the armed soldiers of Moab shall cry out; his life shall be
grievous unto him.
Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices are heard as far as Jahaz. Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out; their souls
tremble within.
For the waters of Nimrim shall be
desolate: for the hay is
withered away, the grass faileth, there is no green thing.
The waters of Nimrim are dried up,
and the grass is
withered; the vegetation is gone,
and the
greenery is no more.
Therefore the abundance they have
gotten,
and that which they have laid up, shall they carry away to the
brook of the willows.
So they carry their wealth
and belongings over the
Brook of the Willows.
For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab; the
howling thereof unto Eglaim,
and the
howling thereof unto Beer-elim.
For their outcry
echoes to the border of Moab. Their
wailing reaches Eglaim; it is heard in Beer-elim.
For the waters of Dimon shall be full of blood: for I will bring more upon Dimon, lions upon him that escapeth of Moab,
and upon the
remnant of the land.
The waters of Dimon are full of blood, but I will bring more upon Dimon— a lion upon the fugitives of Moab
and upon the
remnant of the land.
Let mine outcasts dwell with thee, Moab; be thou a
covert to them from the face of the
spoiler: for the
extortioner is at an end, the
spoiler ceaseth, the oppressors are consumed out of the land.
Let my fugitives stay with you; be a refuge for Moab from the destroyer.” When the
oppressor has gone, destruction has ceased,
and the oppressors have
vanished from the land,
And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.
in loving devotion a throne will be established in the tent of David. A judge seeking justice
and hastening righteousness will sit on it in faithfulness.
We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his
haughtiness,
and his pride,
and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.
For the fields of
Heshbon languish,
and the vine of Sibmah: the lords of the heathen have broken down the principal plants thereof, they are come even unto Jazer, they
wandered through the wilderness: her branches are stretched out, they are gone over the sea.
For the fields of
Heshbon have
withered, along with the grapevines of Sibmah. The rulers of the nations have
trampled its choicest vines, which had reached as far as Jazer
and spread toward the desert. Their shoots had spread out
and passed over the sea.
Therefore I will
bewail with the
weeping of Jazer the vine of Sibmah: I will water thee with my tears, O
Heshbon,
and Elealeh: for the
shouting for thy summer fruits
and for thy harvest is fallen.
So I
weep with Jazer for the vines of Sibmah; I
drench Heshbon and Elealeh with my tears.
Triumphant shouts have fallen silent over your summer fruit
and your harvest.
And gladness is taken away,
and joy out of the
plentiful field;
and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be
shouting: the treaders shall
tread out no wine in their presses; I have made their
vintage shouting to cease.
Joy
and gladness are removed from the
orchard; no one sings or shouts in the vineyards. No one tramples the grapes in the winepresses; I have put an end to the
cheering.
Wherefore my
bowels shall sound like an
harp for Moab,
and mine inward parts for Kir-haresh.
Therefore my heart laments for Moab like a
harp, my inmost being for Kir-heres.
And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab is
weary on the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail.
When Moab appears on the high place, when he wearies himself and enters his sanctuary to pray, it will do him no good.
But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an
hireling,
and the glory of Moab shall be
contemned, with all that great multitude;
and the
remnant shall be very small
and feeble.
And now the LORD says, “In three years, as a
hired worker counts the years, Moab’s
splendor will become an object of contempt, with all her many people.
And those who are left will be few
and feeble.”
The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city,
and it shall be a
ruinous heap.
This is the burden against Damascus: “Behold, Damascus is no longer a city; it has become a
heap of ruins.
The cities of Aroer are
forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down,
and none shall make them afraid.
The cities of Aroer are
forsaken; they will be left to the flocks, which will lie down with no one to fear.
The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim,
and the kingdom from Damascus,
and the
remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the LORD of hosts.
The fortress will disappear from Ephraim,
and the sovereignty from Damascus. The
remnant of
Aram will be like the
splendor of the Israelites,” declares the LORD of Hosts.
And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin,
and the fatness of his flesh shall wax
lean.
“In that day the
splendor of Jacob will
fade,
and the fat of his body will waste away,
And it shall be as when the
harvestman gathereth the corn,
and reapeth the ears with his arm;
and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of
Rephaim.
as the
reaper gathers the standing grain
and harvests the ears with his arm, as one gleans heads of grain in the Valley of
Rephaim.
At that day shall a man look to his Maker, and his eyes shall have respect to the Holy One of Israel.
In that day men will look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.
They will not look to the altars they have fashioned with their hands or to the Asherahs and incense altars they have made with their fingers.
In that day shall his strong cities be as a
forsaken bough,
and an
uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel:
and there shall be
desolation.
In that day their strong cities will be like
forsaken thickets
and summits, abandoned to the Israelites
and to utter
desolation.
Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:
For you have forgotten the God of your salvation
and failed to remember the Rock of your refuge. Therefore, though you
cultivate delightful plots
and set out cuttings from
exotic vines—
In the day shalt thou make thy plant to grow,
and in the morning shalt thou make thy seed to
flourish: but the harvest shall be a
heap in the day of grief
and of
desperate sorrow.
though on the day you plant you make them grow,
and on that morning you help your seed
sprout— yet the harvest will
vanish on the day of disease
and incurable pain.
Woe to the multitude of many people, which make a noise like the noise of the seas;
and to the
rushing of nations, that make a
rushing like the
rushing of mighty waters!
The nations shall
rush like the
rushing of many waters: but God shall
rebuke them,
and they shall
flee far off,
and shall be
chased as the
chaff of the mountains before the wind,
and like a rolling thing before the
whirlwind.
The nations
rage like the
rush of many waters. He rebukes them,
and they
flee far away, driven before the wind like
chaff on the hills, like tumbleweeds before a
gale.
And behold at eveningtide trouble;
and before the morning he is not. This is the portion of them that
spoil us,
and the lot of them that
rob us.
In the evening, there is sudden terror! Before morning, they are no more! This is the portion of those who
loot us
and the lot of those who
plunder us.
That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes upon the waters, saying, Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation scattered
and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out
and trodden down, whose land the rivers have
spoiled!
which sends couriers by sea, in
papyrus vessels on the waters. Go, swift messengers, to a people tall
and smooth-
skinned, to a people widely feared, to a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.
All ye inhabitants of the world,
and dwellers on the earth, see ye, when he lifteth up an
ensign on the mountains;
and when he bloweth a
trumpet, hear ye.
All you people of the world
and dwellers of the earth, when a
banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it; when a ram’s horn sounds, you will hear it.
For so the LORD said unto me, I will take my rest,
and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs,
and like a cloud of
dew in the heat of harvest.
For this is what the LORD has told me: “I will quietly look on from My dwelling place, like
shimmering heat in the
sunshine, like a cloud of
dew in the heat of harvest.”
For
afore the harvest, when the
bud is perfect,
and the
sour grape is
ripening in the flower, he shall both cut off the sprigs with pruninghooks,
and take away
and cut down the branches.
For before the harvest, when the
blossom is gone
and the flower becomes a
ripening grape, He will cut off the shoots with a
pruning knife
and remove
and discard the branches.
They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth: and the fowls shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them.
They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey, and to the beasts of the land. The birds will feed on them in summer, and all the wild animals in winter.
In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a people scattered
and peeled,
and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto; a nation meted out
and trodden under foot, whose land the rivers have
spoiled, to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts, the mount
Zion.
At that time gifts will be brought to the LORD of Hosts— from a people tall
and smooth-
skinned, from a people widely feared, from a powerful nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers— to Mount
Zion, the place of the Name of the LORD of Hosts.
The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud,
and shall come into Egypt:
and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence,
and the heart of Egypt shall
melt in the midst of it.
This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud; He is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt will
tremble before Him,
and the hearts of the Egyptians will
melt within them.
And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.
“So I will
incite Egyptian against Egyptian; brother will fight against brother,
neighbor against
neighbor, city against city,
and kingdom against kingdom.
And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be
emptied out from among them,
and I will
frustrate their plans, so that they will resort to idols
and spirits of the dead, to mediums
and spiritists.
And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts.
I will deliver the Egyptians into the hands of harsh masters, and a fierce king will rule over them,” declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.
And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.
The waters of the Nile will dry up,
and the riverbed will be
parched and empty.
And they shall turn the rivers far away;
and the
brooks of defence shall be
emptied and dried up: the reeds
and flags shall wither.
The canals will
stink; the streams of Egypt will
trickle and dry up; the reeds
and rushes will wither.
The paper reeds by the
brooks, by the mouth of the
brooks,
and every thing sown by the
brooks, shall wither, be driven away,
and be no more.
The bulrushes by the Nile, by the mouth of the river, and all the fields sown along the Nile, will wither, blow away, and be no more.
The fishers also shall
mourn,
and all they that cast angle into the
brooks shall
lament,
and they that spread nets upon the waters shall
languish.
Then the
fishermen will
mourn, all who cast a hook into the Nile will
lament,
and those who spread nets on the waters will pine away.
Moreover they that work in fine flax,
and they that
weave networks, shall be confounded.
The workers in flax will be dismayed, and the weavers of fine linen will turn pale.
And they shall be broken in the purposes thereof, all that make sluices and ponds for fish.
The workers in cloth will be
dejected,
and all the
hired workers will be sick at heart.
Where are they? where are thy wise men? and let them tell thee now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.
Where are your wise men now? Let them tell you
and reveal what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against Egypt.
The LORD hath mingled a
perverse spirit in the midst thereof:
and they have caused Egypt to
err in every work thereof, as a
drunken man staggereth in his
vomit.
The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion. Egypt has been led
astray in all she does, as a
drunkard staggers through his own
vomit.
In that day shall Egypt be like unto women:
and it shall be afraid
and fear because of the
shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts, which he shaketh over it.
In that day the Egyptians will be like women. They will
tremble with fear beneath the
uplifted hand of the LORD of Hosts, when He brandishes it against them.
And the land of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts, which he hath determined against it.
The land of Judah will bring terror to Egypt; whenever Judah is mentioned, Egypt will
tremble over what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against it.
In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of
Canaan,
and swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction.
In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will speak the language of
Canaan and swear allegiance to the LORD of Hosts. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.
In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt,
and a
pillar at the border thereof to the LORD.
In that day there will be an altar to the LORD in the center of the land of Egypt,
and a
pillar to the LORD near her border.
And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.
It will be a sign
and a witness to the LORD of Hosts in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors, He will send them a
savior and defender to
rescue them.
And the LORD shall be known to Egypt,
and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day,
and shall do sacrifice
and oblation;
yea, they shall
vow a
vow unto the LORD,
and perform it.
The LORD will make Himself known to Egypt,
and on that day Egypt will acknowledge the LORD. They will worship with sacrifices
and offerings; they will make vows to the LORD
and fulfill them.
And the LORD shall
smite Egypt: he shall
smite and heal it:
and they shall return even to the LORD,
and he shall be intreated of them,
and shall
heal them.
And the LORD will strike Egypt with a plague; He will strike them but
heal them. They will turn to the LORD,
and He will hear their prayers
and heal them.
In that day shall there be a
highway out of Egypt to Assyria,
and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt,
and the Egyptian into Assyria,
and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.
In that day there will be a
highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt,
and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians
and Assyrians will worship together.
In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:
In that day Israel will join a three-party alliance with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing upon the earth.
Whom the LORD of hosts shall
bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people,
and Assyria the work of my hands,
and Israel mine inheritance.
The LORD of Hosts will
bless them, saying, “Blessed be Egypt My people, Assyria My
handiwork,
and Israel My inheritance.”
In the year that
Tartan came unto
Ashdod, (when
Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,)
and fought against
Ashdod,
and took it;
Before the year that the chief commander, sent by
Sargon king of Assyria, came to
Ashdod and attacked
and captured it,
At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go
and loose the
sackcloth from off thy loins,
and put off thy
shoe from thy foot.
And he did so, walking naked
and barefoot.
the LORD had already spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go, remove the
sackcloth from your
waist and the
sandals from your feet.”
And Isaiah did so, walking around naked
and barefoot.
And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked
and barefoot three years for a sign
and wonder upon Egypt
and upon
Ethiopia;
Then the LORD said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has gone naked
and barefoot for three years as a sign
and omen against Egypt
and Cush,
So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners,
and the Ethiopians
captives, young
and old, naked
and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.
so the king of Assyria will lead away the
captives of Egypt
and the exiles of
Cush, young
and old alike, naked
and barefoot, with bared buttocks—to Egypt’s shame.
And they shall be afraid
and ashamed of
Ethiopia their expectation,
and of Egypt their glory.
Those who made
Cush their hope
and Egypt their
boast will be dismayed
and ashamed.
And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation,
whither we
flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria:
and how shall we escape?
And on that day the dwellers of this coastland will say, ‘See what has happened to our source of hope, those to whom we fled for help
and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?’”
