And they caught him,
and cast him out of the
vineyard,
and slew him.
So they seized him
and threw him out of the
vineyard and killed him.
They say unto him, He will
miserably destroy those wicked men,
and will let out his
vineyard unto other
husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
“He will bring those wretches to a
wretched end,” they replied, “
and will rent out the
vineyard to other tenants who will give him his share of the fruit at harvest time.”
Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is from the Lord,
and it is
marvelous in our eyes’?
Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be
crushed.”
And when the chief priests
and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
When the chief priests
and Pharisees heard His parables, they knew that Jesus was speaking about them.
And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
Once again, Jesus spoke to them in parables:
And sent forth his servants to call them that were
bidden to the
wedding:
and they would not come.
He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the
banquet, but they refused to come.
Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are
bidden, Behold, I have prepared my
dinner: my oxen
and my fatlings are killed,
and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
Again, he sent other servants
and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my
dinner. My oxen
and fattened cattle have been killed,
and everything is ready. Come to the
wedding banquet.’
But they made light of it,
and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his
merchandise:
But they paid no attention and went away, one to his field, another to his business.
The rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them.
But when the king heard thereof, he was
wroth:
and he sent forth his armies,
and destroyed those murderers,
and burned up their city.
The king was
enraged,
and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers
and burn their city.
Go ye therefore into the
highways,
and as many as ye shall find,
bid to the marriage.
Go therefore to the crossroads
and invite to the
banquet as many as you can find.’
So those servants went out into the
highways,
and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad
and good:
and the
wedding was furnished with guests.
So the servants went out into the streets
and gathered
everyone they could find, both evil
and good,
and the
wedding hall was filled with guests.
And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a
wedding garment:
But when the king came in to see the guests, he
spotted a man who was not dressed in
wedding clothes.
And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in
hither not having a
wedding garment?
And he was speechless.
‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without
wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless.
Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand
and foot,
and take him away,
and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Then the king told the servants, ‘
Tie him hand
and foot,
and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
And they sent out unto him their disciples with the
Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true,
and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
They sent their disciples to Him along with the
Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that You are
honest and that You teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You seek favor from no one, because You pay no attention to external appearance.
But Jesus perceived their wickedness,
and said, Why
tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “You hypocrites, why are you testing Me?
Shew me the tribute money.
And they brought unto him a
penny.
Show Me the coin used for the tax.”
And they brought Him a
denarius.
“Whose image is this,” He asked, “and whose inscription?”
They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.
“Caesar’s,” they answered. So Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
When they had heard these words, they
marvelled,
and left him,
and went their way.
And when they heard this, they were
amazed. So they left Him
and went away.
The same day came to him the
Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection,
and asked him,
That same day the
Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus
and questioned Him.
Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
“Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.
Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother.
Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
The same thing happened to the second and third brothers, down to the seventh.
And last of all the woman died also.
And last of all, the woman died.
Jesus answered
and said unto them, Ye do
err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.
I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”
And when the multitude heard this, they were
astonished at his doctrine.
When the crowds heard this, they were
astonished at His teaching.
But when the
Pharisees had heard that he had put the
Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
And when the
Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the
Sadducees, they themselves gathered together.
Then one of them, which was a
lawyer, asked him a question,
tempting him,
and saying,
One of them, an
expert in the law, tested Him with a question:
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and great commandment.
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.
On these two commandments
hang all the law
and the prophets.
All the Law
and the Prophets
hang on these two commandments.”
And no man was able to answer him a word, neither
durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
No one was able to answer a word,
and from that day on no one
dared to question Him any further.
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples:
All therefore
whatsoever they
bid you observe, that observe
and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say,
and do not.
So practice
and observe everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they
preach.
For they bind heavy burdens
and grievous to be borne,
and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
They
tie up heavy,
burdensome loads
and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their
phylacteries,
and enlarge the borders of their garments,
And love the
uppermost rooms at feasts,
and the chief seats in the synagogues,
They love the places of honor at banquets, the chief seats in the synagogues,
And greetings in the markets,
and to be called of men,
Rabbi,
Rabbi.
the greetings in the marketplaces,
and the title of ‘
Rabbi’ by which they are addressed.
But be not ye called
Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ;
and all ye are brethren.
But you are not to be called ‘
Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher,
and you are all brothers.
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
And do not call
anyone on earth your father, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.
But
woe unto you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in
yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You
yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter.
Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You
traverse land
and sea to
win a single convert,
and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of
hell as you are.
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes it sacred?
And,
Whosoever shall
swear by the altar, it is nothing; but
whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
And you say, ‘If
anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if
anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.’
Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes it sacred?
So then, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
And whoso shall
swear by the temple, sweareth by it,
and by him that dwelleth therein.
And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the One who dwells in it.
And he that shall
swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God,
and by him that sitteth
thereon.
And he who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the One who sits on it.
Woe unto you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay
tithe of
mint and anise and cummin,
and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy,
and faith: these ought ye to have done,
and not to leave the other undone.
Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You pay
tithes of
mint,
dill,
and cumin. But you have disregarded the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy,
and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
Thou blind
Pharisee,
cleanse first that which is within the cup
and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
Blind
Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup
and dish, so that the outside may become clean as well.
Woe unto you,
scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited
sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones,
and of all uncleanness.
Woe to you,
scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like
whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones
and every kind of impurity.
Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of
hypocrisy and iniquity.
In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous, but on the inside you are full of
hypocrisy and wickedness.
And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in
shedding the blood of the prophets.’
Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets,
and wise men,
and scribes:
and some of them ye shall kill
and crucify;
and some of them shall ye
scourge in your synagogues,
and persecute them from city to city:
Because of this, I am sending you prophets
and wise men
and teachers. Some of them you will kill
and crucify,
and others you will
flog in your synagogues
and persecute in town after town.
That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous
Abel unto the blood of
Zacharias son of
Barachias, whom ye
slew between the temple
and the altar.
And so upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous
Abel to the blood of
Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple
and the altar.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets,
and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a
hen gathereth her chickens under her wings,
and ye would not!
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets
and stones those sent to her, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a
hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling!
And Jesus went out,
and departed from the temple:
and his disciples came to him for to
shew him the buildings of the temple.
As Jesus left the temple and was walking away, His disciples came up to Him to point out its buildings.
And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things?
verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
“Do you see all these things?” He replied. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?”
And Jesus answered
and said unto them, Take
heed that no man
deceive you.
Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you.
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ;
and shall
deceive many.
For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’
and will
deceive many.
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
You will hear of wars
and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not
alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come.
For nation shall rise against nation,
and kingdom against kingdom:
and there shall be famines,
and pestilences,
and earthquakes, in
divers places.
Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.
Then shall they deliver you up to be
afflicted,
and shall kill you:
and ye shall be
hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
Then they will deliver you over to be
persecuted and killed,
and you will be
hated by all nations because of My name.
And then shall many be
offended,
and shall
betray one another,
and shall
hate one another.
At that time many will fall away
and will
betray and hate one another,
And many false prophets shall rise,
and shall
deceive many.
and many false prophets will arise and mislead many.
And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Because of the
multiplication of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold.
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
And let no one in the field return for his
cloak.
And woe unto them that are with child,
and to them that give
suck in those days!
For then shall be great
tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
For at that time there will be great
tribulation,
unmatched from the beginning of the world until now,
and never to be seen again.
And except those days should be
shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the
elect’s sake those days shall be
shortened.
If those days had not been cut short,
nobody would be saved. But for the sake of the
elect, those days will be cut short.
For there shall arise false Christs,
and false prophets,
and shall
shew great signs
and wonders;
insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall
deceive the very
elect.
For false Christs
and false prophets will appear
and perform great signs
and wonders that would
deceive even the
elect, if that were possible.
For as the
lightning cometh out of the east,
and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
For just as the
lightning comes from the east
and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
Immediately after the
tribulation of those days shall the sun be
darkened,
and the moon shall not give her light,
and the stars shall fall from heaven,
and the powers of the heavens shall be
shaken:
Immediately after the
tribulation of those days: ‘The sun will be
darkened,
and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky,
and the powers of the heavens will be
shaken.’
And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven:
and then shall all the tribes of the earth
mourn,
and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power
and great glory.
At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven,
and all the tribes of the earth will
mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power
and great glory.
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a
trumpet,
and they shall gather together his
elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
And He will send out His angels with a loud
trumpet call,
and they will gather His
elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender,
and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is
nigh:
Now learn this
lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branches become tender
and sprout leaves, you know that summer is near.
Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
For in the days before the flood, people were eating
and drinking, marrying
and giving in marriage, up to the day
Noah entered the ark.
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
And they were
oblivious, until the flood came
and swept them all away. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.
Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
Two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left.
Two women shall be
grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken,
and the other left.
Two women will be
grinding at the mill: one will be taken
and the other left.
But know this, that if the
goodman of the house had known in what watch the
thief would come, he would have watched,
and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
But understand this: If the homeowner had known in which watch of the night the
thief was coming, he would have kept watch
and would not have let his house be broken into.
Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of his household, to give the others their food at the proper time?
But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
But suppose that servant is wicked and says in his heart, ‘My master will be away a long time.’
