And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man
and a
publican.
If he refuses to
listen to them, tell it to the church.
And if he refuses to
listen even to the church, regard him as you would a pagan or a tax
collector.
Verily I say unto you,
Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven:
and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Then came Peter to him,
and said, Lord, how
oft shall my brother sin against me,
and I
forgive him? till seven times?
Then Peter came to Jesus
and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I
forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
And when he had begun to
reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.
As he began the settlements, a
debtor was brought to him owing ten thousand talents.
But
forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold,
and his wife,
and children,
and all that he had,
and payment to be made.
Since the man was unable to pay, the master ordered that he be sold to pay his debt, along with his wife and children and everything he owned.
The servant therefore fell down,
and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have
patience with me,
and I will pay thee all.
Then the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Have
patience with me,’ he
begged, ‘
and I will pay back everything.’
Then the lord of that servant was moved with
compassion,
and loosed him,
and forgave him the debt.
But the same servant went out,
and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred
pence:
and he laid hands on him,
and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred
denarii. He
grabbed him
and began to
choke him, saying, ‘Pay back what you owe me!’
And his fellowservant fell down at his feet,
and besought him, saying, Have
patience with me,
and I will pay thee all.
So his fellow servant fell down
and begged him, ‘Have
patience with me,
and I will pay you back.’
And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.
But he refused. Instead, he went and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay his debt.
So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very
sorry,
and came
and told unto their lord all that was done.
When his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and recounted all of this to their master.
Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I
forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:
Then the master summoned him
and declared, ‘You wicked servant! I
forgave all your debt because you
begged me.
And his lord was
wroth,
and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.
In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be
tortured, until he should repay all that he owed.
And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from
Galilee,
and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;
When Jesus had finished saying these things, He left
Galilee and went into the region of
Judea beyond the Jordan.
And great multitudes followed him;
and he
healed them there.
Large crowds followed Him,
and He
healed them there.
The
Pharisees also came unto him,
tempting him,
and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?
Then some
Pharisees came
and tested Him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his wife for any reason?”
And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,
Jesus answered, “Have you not read that from the beginning the
Creator ‘made them male
and female,’
And said, For this cause shall a man leave father
and mother,
and shall
cleave to his wife:
and they
twain shall be one flesh?
and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of
divorcement,
and to put her away?
“Why then,” they asked, “did Moses order a man to give his wife a
certificate of
divorce and send her away?”
Now I tell you that
whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality,
and marries another woman, commits
adultery.”
His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
His disciples said to Him, “If this is the case between a man and his wife, it is better not to marry.”
For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s
womb:
and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men:
and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
For there are eunuchs who were born that way; others were made that way by men; and still others live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”
Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them,
and pray:
and the disciples
rebuked them.
Then the little children were brought to Jesus for Him to place His hands on them
and pray for them.
And the disciples
rebuked those who brought them.
But Jesus said, Suffer little children,
and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them! For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.
And after He had placed His hands on them, He went on from there.
And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
Just then a man came up to Jesus and inquired, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to obtain eternal life?”
And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou
wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
“Why do you ask Me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
Honour thy father
and thy mother:
and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.
Jesus said unto him, If thou
wilt be perfect, go
and sell that thou hast,
and give to the poor,
and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven:
and come
and follow me.
Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions
and give to the poor,
and you will have
treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a
camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
Again I tell you, it is easier for a
camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly
amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?
When the disciples heard this, they were greatly
astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
But Jesus
beheld them,
and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Then answered Peter
and said unto him, Behold, we have
forsaken all,
and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?
“Look,” Peter replied, “we have left everything to follow You. What then will there be for us?”
And Jesus said unto them,
Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, in the
renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And every one that hath
forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an
hundredfold,
and shall
inherit everlasting life.
And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for the sake of My name will receive a
hundredfold and will
inherit eternal life.
But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.
And when he had agreed with the labourers for a
penny a day, he sent them into his
vineyard.
And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
About the third hour he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.
And said unto them; Go ye also into the
vineyard,
and whatsoever is right I will give you.
And they went their way.
‘You also go into my
vineyard,’ he said, ‘
and I will pay you whatever is right.’
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
So they went. He went out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour and did the same thing.
And about the
eleventh hour he went out,
and found others standing idle,
and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
About the
eleventh hour he went out
and found still others standing around. ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’ he asked.
They say unto him, Because no man hath
hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the
vineyard;
and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
‘Because no one has
hired us,’ they answered. So he told them, ‘You also go into my
vineyard.’
So when even was come, the lord of the
vineyard saith unto his
steward, Call the labourers,
and give them their
hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
When evening came, the owner of the
vineyard said to his
foreman, ‘Call the workers
and pay them their wages, starting with the last ones
hired and moving on to the first.’
And when they came that were
hired about the
eleventh hour, they received every man a
penny.
But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more;
and they likewise received every man a
penny.
So when the original workers came, they assumed they would receive more. But each of them also received a
denarius.
And when they had received it, they
murmured against the
goodman of the house,
Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
‘These men who were
hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘
and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden
and the
scorching heat of the day.’
But he answered one of them,
and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong:
didst not thou agree with me for a
penny?
But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did you not agree with me on one
denarius?
Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
Take your pay and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you.
So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside and said,
Behold, we go up to Jerusalem;
and the Son of man shall be
betrayed unto the chief priests
and unto the
scribes,
and they shall
condemn him to death,
“Look, we are going up to Jerusalem,
and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests
and scribes. They will
condemn Him to death
And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to
mock,
and to
scourge,
and to
crucify him:
and the third day he shall rise again.
and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be
mocked and flogged and crucified.
And on the third day He will be raised to life.”
Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons,
worshipping him,
and desiring a certain thing of him.
Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons
and knelt down to make a request of Him.
And he said unto her, What
wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand,
and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
“What do you want?” He inquired. She answered, “Declare that in Your kingdom one of these two sons of mine may sit at Your right hand, and the other at Your left.”
But Jesus answered
and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of,
and to be
baptized with the baptism that I am
baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
“You do not know what you are asking,” Jesus replied. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” the brothers answered.
And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup,
and be
baptized with the baptism that I am
baptized with: but to sit on my right hand,
and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
“You will indeed drink My cup,” Jesus said. “But to sit at My right or left is not Mine to grant. These seats belong to those for whom My Father has prepared them.”
And when the ten heard it, they were moved with
indignation against the two brethren.
When the ten heard about this, they were
indignant with the two brothers.
But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
But Jesus called them aside and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.
And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave—
Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister,
and to give his life a
ransom for many.
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,
and to give His life as a
ransom for many.”
And as they departed from
Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
As they were leaving
Jericho, a large crowd followed Him.
And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by,
cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
And there were two blind men sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they
cried out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
And the multitude
rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they
cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
The crowd
admonished them to be silent, but they
cried out all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”
And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want Me to do for you?” He asked.
So Jesus had
compassion on them,
and touched their eyes:
and immediately their eyes received sight,
and they followed him.
Moved with
compassion, Jesus touched their eyes,
and at once they received their sight
and followed Him.
And when they drew
nigh unto Jerusalem,
and were come to
Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
As they approached Jerusalem
and came to
Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent out two disciples,
Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you,
and straightway ye shall find an
ass tied,
and a
colt with her: loose them,
and bring them unto me.
saying to them, “Go into the village
ahead of you,
and at once you will find a
donkey tied there, with her
colt beside her.
Untie them
and bring them to Me.
And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them;
and straightway he will send them.
If
anyone questions you, tell him that the Lord needs them,
and he will send them right away.”
Tell ye the daughter of
Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee,
meek,
and sitting upon an
ass,
and a
colt the
foal of an
ass.
“Say to the Daughter of
Zion, ‘See, your King comes to you, gentle
and riding on a
donkey, on a
colt, the
foal of a
donkey.’”
And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
So the disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.
And brought the
ass,
and the
colt,
and put on them their clothes,
and they set him
thereon.
They brought the
donkey and the
colt and laid their cloaks on them,
and Jesus sat on them.
And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
A massive crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
And the multitudes that went before,
and that followed,
cried, saying,
Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord;
Hosanna in the highest.
The crowds that went
ahead of Him
and those that followed were
shouting: “
Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” “
Hosanna in the highest!”
And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
When Jesus had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was
stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
Then Jesus entered the temple courts
and drove out all who were
buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers
and the seats of those selling doves.
And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of
thieves.
And He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer.’ But you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”
And the blind
and the
lame came to him in the temple;
and he
healed them.
The blind
and the
lame came to Him at the temple,
and He
healed them.
And when the chief priests
and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did,
and the children crying in the temple,
and saying,
Hosanna to the Son of David; they were
sore displeased,
But the chief priests
and scribes were
indignant when they saw the wonders He performed
and the children
shouting in the temple courts, “
Hosanna to the Son of David!”
And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say?
And Jesus saith unto them,
Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes
and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
“Do You hear what these children are saying?” they asked. “
Yes,” Jesus answered. “Have you never read: ‘From the mouths of children
and infants You have ordained praise’?”
And he left them,
and went out of the city into
Bethany;
and he
lodged there.
Then He left them
and went out of the city to
Bethany, where He spent the night.
And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it,
and found nothing
thereon, but leaves only,
and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee
henceforward for ever.
And presently the fig tree
withered away.
Seeing a fig tree by the road, He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. “May you never bear fruit again!” He said.
And immediately the tree
withered.
And when the disciples saw it, they
marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree
withered away!
When the disciples saw this, they
marveled and asked, “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?”
Jesus answered
and said unto them,
Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith,
and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed,
and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.
And all things,
whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
When Jesus returned to the temple courts and began to teach, the chief priests and elders of the people came up to Him. “By what authority are You doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave You this authority?”
And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
“I will also ask you one question,” Jesus replied, “and if you answer Me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
What was the source of John’s baptism? Was it from heaven or from men?” They
deliberated among themselves
and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will ask, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’
And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
So they answered, “We do not know.” And Jesus replied, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
But what think ye? A certain man had two sons;
and he came to the first,
and said, Son, go work to day in my
vineyard.
But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first one
and said, ‘Son, go
and work
today in the
vineyard.’
He answered
and said, I will not: but afterward he
repented,
and went.
‘I will not,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went.
And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
Then the man went to the second son and told him the same thing. ‘I will, sir,’ he said. But he did not go.
Whether of them
twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them,
Verily I say unto you, That the publicans
and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
Which of the two did the will of his father?” “The first,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you.
For John came unto you in the way of righteousness,
and ye believed him not: but the publicans
and the harlots believed him:
and ye, when ye had seen it,
repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
For John came to you in a righteous way
and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors
and prostitutes did.
And even after you saw this, you did not
repent and believe him.
Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a
vineyard,
and hedged it round about,
and digged a winepress in it,
and built a tower,
and let it out to
husbandmen,
and went into a far country:
Listen to another parable: There was a
landowner who planted a
vineyard. He put a wall around it,
dug a winepress in it,
and built a tower. Then he rented it out to some tenants
and went away on a journey.
And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the
husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
When the harvest time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his share of the fruit.
And the
husbandmen took his servants,
and beat one,
and killed another,
and stoned another.
But the tenants seized his servants. They beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.
Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
Again, he sent other servants, more than the first group. But the tenants did the same to them.
But when the
husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him,
and let us seize on his inheritance.
But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and take his inheritance.’
