And
Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great
strife with the children of
Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.
But Jephthah replied, “My people and I had a serious conflict with the
Ammonites, and when I called, you did not save me out of their hands.
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.
The angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, “It is true that you are barren and have no children; but you will conceive and give birth to a son.
Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and told her husband, “A man of God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name.
But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a
Nazarite to God from the
womb to the day of his death.
But he said to me, ‘Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the boy will be a
Nazirite to God from the
womb until the day of his death.’”
And God
hearkened to the voice of
Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field:
but Manoah her husband was not with her.
And God
listened to the voice of
Manoah, and the angel of God returned to the woman as she was sitting in the field;
but her husband
Manoah was not with her.
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, Though thou
detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou
wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For
Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD.
And the angel of the LORD replied, “Even if I stay, I will not eat your food.
But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD.” For
Manoah did not know that it was the angel of the LORD.
But the angel of the LORD did no more appear to
Manoah and to his wife. Then
Manoah knew that he was an angel of the LORD.
And when the angel of the LORD did not appear again to
Manoah and his wife,
Manoah realized that it had been the angel of the LORD.
But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these.
But his wife replied, “If the LORD had intended to kill us, He would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things or spoken to us this way.”
Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the
uncircumcised Philistines? And
Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
But his father and mother replied, “Can’t you find a young woman among your relatives or among any of our people? Must you go to the
uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife?”
But Samson told his father, “Get her for me, for she is pleasing to my eyes.”
But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
(Now his father and mother did not know this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.)
And the Spirit of the LORD came
mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a
kid, and he had nothing in his hand:
but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
and the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon him, and he
tore the lion apart with his bare hands as one would
tear a young goat.
But he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.
And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat:
but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the
carcase of the lion.
So he
scooped some honey into his hands and
ate it as he went along. And when he returned to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they
ate it.
But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s
carcass.
But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy
riddle, that we may hear it.
But if you cannot
solve it, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.” “Tell us your
riddle,” they replied. “Let us hear it.”
And
Samson’s wife
wept before him, and said, Thou
dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a
riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
Then
Samson’s wife came to him,
weeping, and said, “You
hate me! You do not really love me! You have
posed to my people a
riddle,
but have not explained it to me.” “Look,” he said, “I have not even explained it to my father or mother, so why should I explain it to you?”
But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.
and his wife was given to one of the men who had accompanied him.
But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that
Samson visited his wife with a
kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber.
But her father would not suffer him to go in.
Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,
Samson took a young goat and went to visit his wife. “I want to go to my wife in her room,” he said.
But her father would not let him enter.
And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And
Samson said unto them,
Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me
yourselves.
But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson replied, “
Swear to me that you will not kill me
yourselves.”
And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.
“No,” they answered, “we will not kill you,
but we will
tie you up securely and hand you over to them.” So they bound him with two new ropes and led him up from the rock.
But God
clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!”
But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him
therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And there were liers in wait
abiding in the chamber. And he
brake them from off his arms like a thread.
So
Delilah took new ropes,
tied him up with them, and called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!”
But while the men were hidden in her room, he
snapped the ropes off his arms like they were threads.
And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web.
So while he
slept,
Delilah took the seven braids of his hair and
wove them into the web. Then she
tightened it with a pin and called to him, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!”
But he
awoke from his sleep and pulled out the pin with the
loom and the web.
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
Then she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and
shake myself free.”
But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him.
But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, and bound him with
fetters of brass; and he did
grind in the prison house.
Then the Philistines seized him,
gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, where he was bound with bronze
shackles and forced to
grind grain in the prison.
In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
In those days there was no king in Israel;
everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
And his
concubine played the
whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
But she was unfaithful to him and left him to return to her father’s house in
Bethlehem in Judah. After she had been there four months,
And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the
damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a
morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning and prepared to depart,
but the
girl’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh your heart with a
morsel of bread, and then you can go.”
And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he
lodged there again.
The man got up to depart, but his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night.
And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the
damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they
tarried until
afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
On the fifth day, he got up early in the morning to depart,
but the
girl’s father said, “Please refresh your heart.” So they waited until late
afternoon and the two of them
ate.
But the man would not
tarry that night,
but he rose up and departed, and came over against
Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two
asses saddled, his
concubine also was with him.
But the man was unwilling to
spend the night. He got up and departed, and arrived opposite
Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two
saddled donkeys and his
concubine.
And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside
hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
But his master replied, “We will not turn aside to the city of foreigners, where there are no Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.”
And they turned aside thither, to go in and to
lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to
lodging.
They stopped to go in and
lodge in Gibeah. The
Levite went in and sat down in the city square,
but no one would take them into his home for the night.
And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he
sojourned in Gibeah:
but the men of the place were Benjamites.
That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was residing in Gibeah (the men of that place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the field.
And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
The
Levite replied, “We are traveling from
Bethlehem in Judah to the remote hill country of Ephraim, where I am from. I went to
Bethlehem in Judah, and now I am going to the house of the LORD;
but no one has taken me into his home,
Behold, here is my daughter a
maiden, and his
concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you:
but unto this man do not so
vile a thing.
Look, let me bring out my virgin daughter and the man’s
concubine, and you can use them and do with them as you wish.
But do not do such a
vile thing to this man.”
But the men would not
hearken to him: so the man took his
concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and
abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
But the men would not
listen to him. So the
Levite took his
concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and
abused her throughout the night, and at
dawn they let her go.
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going.
But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an
ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his place.
“Get up,” he told her. “Let us go.”
But there was no
response. So the man put her on his
donkey and set out for home.
And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and
beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my
concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me and surrounded the house. They intended to kill me,
but they
abused my
concubine, and she died.
But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;
Now this is what we will do to Gibeah: We will go against it as the lot dictates.
Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of
Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel.
But the children of Benjamin would not
hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so we can put them to death and
purge Israel of this evil.”
But the Benjamites refused to
heed the voice of their fellow Israelites.
But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
And from their cities they came together at Gibeah to go out and fight against the Israelites.
And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in
array in the place where they put themselves in
array the first day.
But the
Israelite army took courage and again took their battle positions in the same place where they had
arrayed themselves on the first day.
And the children of Benjamin said, They are
smitten down before us, as at the first.
But the children of Israel said, Let us
flee, and draw them from the city unto the
highways.
“We are defeating them as before,” said the Benjamites.
But the Israelites said, “Let us retreat and draw them away from the city
onto the roads.”
And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was
sore:
but they knew not that evil was near them.
Then 10,000 select men from all Israel made a
frontal assault against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce.
But the Benjamites did not
realize that
disaster was upon them.
But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a
pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.
But when the column of smoke began to go up from the city, the Benjamites looked behind them and saw the whole city going up in smoke.
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.
But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock
Rimmon, and abode in the rock
Rimmon four months.
But 600 men turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of
Rimmon, where they stayed four months.
And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of
Jabesh-
gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.
And at that time the Benjamites returned and were given the women who were
spared from
Jabesh-
gilead.
But there were not enough women for all of them.
Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have
sworn, saying,
Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
But we cannot give them our daughters as wives.” For the Israelites had
sworn, “
Cursed is he who gives a wife to a
Benjamite.”
Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in
Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of
Bethel, on the east side of the
highway that goeth up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
“
But look,” they said, “there is a yearly feast to the LORD in
Shiloh, which is north of
Bethel east of the road that goes up from
Bethel to
Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”
And
Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my
womb, that they may be your husbands?
But Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters. Why would you go with me? Are there still sons in my
womb to become your husbands?
And they lifted up their voice, and
wept again: and Orpah
kissed her mother in law;
but Ruth clave unto her.
And
Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for
whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will
lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
But Ruth replied: “Do not
urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.
Where thou
diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought
but death part thee and me.
Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD
punish me, and ever so severely, if anything
but death separates you and me.”
I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me
Naomi, seeing the LORD hath
testified against me, and the
Almighty hath
afflicted me?
I went away full,
but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me
Naomi? After all, the LORD has
testified against me, and the
Almighty has
afflicted me.”
Then said Boaz unto
Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to
glean in another field, neither go from hence,
but abide here fast by my maidens:
Then Boaz said to
Ruth, “
Listen, my daughter. Do not go and
glean in another field, and do not go away from this place,
but stay here close to my servant girls.
Wash
thyself therefore, and
anoint thee, and put thy
raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor:
but make not
thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
Therefore wash
yourself, put on
perfume, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the
threshing floor,
but do not let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.
Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a
kinsman, well; let him do the
kinsman’s part:
but if he will not do the part of a
kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a
kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.
Stay here
tonight, and in the morning, if he wants to
redeem you, good. Let him
redeem you.
But if he does not want to
redeem you, as surely as the LORD lives, I will. Now lie here until morning.”
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
So she lay down at his feet until morning,
but she got up before
anyone else could recognize her. Then Boaz said, “Do not let it be known that a woman came to the
threshing floor.”
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it:
but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so.
But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one
but you to
redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he replied.
And he had two wives; the name of the one was
Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children,
but Hannah had no children.
He had two wives, one named
Hannah and the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children,
but Hannah had none.
But unto
Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved
Hannah:
but the LORD had shut up her
womb.
But to
Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her
womb.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid,
but wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
Now
Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved,
but her voice was not heard: therefore
Eli thought she had been
drunken.
Hannah was praying in her heart, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. So
Eli thought she was
drunk And
Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have
drunken neither wine nor strong drink,
but have poured out my soul before the LORD.
“No, my lord,”
Hannah replied. “I am a woman
oppressed in spirit. I have not had any wine or strong drink,
but I have poured out my soul before the LORD.
But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there
abide for ever.
but Hannah did not go. “After the boy is
weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that
stumbled are
girded with strength.
The bows of the mighty are broken,
but the feeble are
equipped with strength.
They that were full have
hired out themselves for bread; and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out for food,
but the
starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven,
but she who has many sons pines away.
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.
And Elkanah went to
Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before
Eli the priest.
Then Elkanah went home to
Ramah,
but the boy began ministering to the LORD before
Eli the priest.
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest; for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee,
but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you,
but only raw.”
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay;
but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child,
girded with a linen
ephod.
Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD—a boy wearing a linen
ephod.
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him:
but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they
hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would
slay them.
If a man sins against another man, God can
intercede for him;
but if a man sins against the LORD, who can
intercede for him?”
But they would not
listen to their father, since the LORD intended to put them to death.
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever:
but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that
despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me
forever.
But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me! For I will honor those who honor Me,
but those who
despise Me will be
disdained.
Then
Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.
but Eli called to him and said, “Samuel, my son.” “Here I am,” answered Samuel.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son!”
But she did not
respond or pay any
heed.
And when they arose early on the
morrow morning, behold,
Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of
Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the
threshold; only the
stump of
Dagon was left to him.
But when they got up early the next morning, there was
Dagon, fallen on his face before the ark of the LORD, with his head and his hands broken off and lying on the
threshold. Only the
torso remained.
But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of
Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and
smote them with
emerods, even
Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
Now the hand of the LORD was heavy on the people of
Ashdod and its vicinity,
ravaging them and
afflicting them with tumors.
And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he
smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had
emerods in their secret parts.
But after they had moved the ark to
Gath, the LORD’s hand was also against that city, throwing it into great confusion and
afflicting the men of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.
Therefore they sent the ark of God to
Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to
Ekron, that the Ekronites
cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to
slay us and our people.
So they sent the ark of God to
Ekron,
but as it arrived, the Ekronites
cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty;
but in any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty,
but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”
Now therefore make a new
cart, and take two
milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and
tie the
kine to the
cart, and bring their
calves home from them:
Now, therefore, prepare one new
cart with two milk cows that have never been yoked.
Hitch the cows to the
cart,
but take their
calves away and pen them up.
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil:
but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that
smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great
disaster.
But if it does not, then we will know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
And he
smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he
smote of the people fifty thousand and
threescore and ten men: and the people
lamented, because the LORD had
smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.
But God struck down some of the people of Beth-shemesh because they looked inside the ark of the LORD. He struck down seventy men, and the people
mourned because the LORD had struck them with a great slaughter.
And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel:
but the LORD
thundered with a great
thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and
discomfited them; and they were
smitten before Israel.
As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel, Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering.
But that day the LORD
thundered loudly against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.
And his sons walked not in his ways,
but turned aside after
lucre, and took bribes, and
perverted judgment.
But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside toward
dishonest gain, accepting bribes and
perverting justice.
But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
But when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” their demand was displeasing in the sight of Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.
And the LORD said unto Samuel,
Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee,
but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
And the LORD said to Samuel, “
Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. For it is not you they have rejected,
but they have rejected Me as their king.
Now therefore
hearken unto their voice:
howbeit yet
protest solemnly unto them, and
shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
Now
listen to them,
but you must solemnly
warn them and show them the manner of the king who will reign over them.”
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
When that day comes, you will
beg for relief from the king you have chosen,
but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said,
Nay;
but we will have a king over us;
Nevertheless, the people refused to
listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We must have a king over us.
And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
So Saul passed through the hill country of Ephraim and then through the land of Shalishah,
but did not find the
donkeys. He and the servant went through the region of Shaalim,
but they were not there. Then they went through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.
Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
“If we do go,” Saul replied, “what can we give the man? For the bread in our packs is gone, and there is no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?”
And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul,
Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,)
but stand thou still a while, that I may
shew thee the word of God.
As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on
ahead of us,
but you stay for a while, and I will
reveal to you the word of God.” So the servant went on.
And one of the same place answered and said,
But who is their father? Therefore it became a
proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
Then a man who lived there replied, “And who is their father?” So the saying became a
proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the
asses were found.
But of the matter of the kingdom,
whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
And Saul replied, “He
assured us that the
donkeys had been found.”
But Saul did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the
kingship.
And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your
adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him,
Nay,
but set a king over us. Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.
But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and afflictions, and you have said to Him, ‘No, set a king over us.’ Now therefore present
yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and clans.”
