city, and he shall let go my
captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts.
I will raise up Cyrus in righteousness, and I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild My city and set My exiles free, but not for payment or reward, says the LORD of Hosts.”
For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is his name.
who indeed call
yourselves after the holy
city and
lean on the God of Israel; the LORD of Hosts is His name.
Awake,
awake; put on thy strength, O
Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy
city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the
uncircumcised and the unclean.
O thou
afflicted,
tossed with
tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors, and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
The sons also of them that
afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that
despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet; and they shall call thee, The
city of the LORD, The
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
The sons of your oppressors will come and bow down to you; all who
reviled you will fall facedown at your feet and call you the
City of the LORD,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.
And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A
city not
forsaken.
And they will be called the Holy People, the Redeemed of The LORD; and you will be called Sought Out, A
City Not
Forsaken.
A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.
Hear the
uproar from the
city;
listen to the voice from the temple! It is the voice of the LORD, repaying His enemies what they deserve!
For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced
city, and an iron
pillar, and
brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land.
Now behold, this day I have made you like a fortified
city, an iron
pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests, and the people of the land.
Turn, O
backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a
city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to
Zion:
“Return, O faithless children,” declares the LORD, “for I am your master, and I will take you—one from a
city and two from a family—and bring you to
Zion.
The whole
city shall
flee for the noise of the
horsemen and
bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and
climb up upon the rocks: every
city shall be
forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.
Every
city flees at the sound of the
horseman and archer. They enter the thickets and
climb among the rocks. Every
city is abandoned; no inhabitant is left.
Run ye to and
fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth; and I will
pardon it.
“Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem. Look now and take note; search her squares. If you can find a single person,
anyone who acts justly,
anyone who seeks the truth, then I will
forgive the
city.
For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,
Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the
city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Cut down the trees and raise a siege
ramp against Jerusalem. This
city must be punished; there is nothing but oppression in her midst.
The
snorting of his horses was heard from
Dan: the whole land
trembled at the sound of the
neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have
devoured the land, and all that is in it; the
city, and those that dwell therein.
The
snorting of enemy horses is heard from
Dan. At the sound of the
neighing of mighty steeds, the whole land quakes. They come to
devour the land and everything in it, the
city and all who dwell in it.
If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the
city, then behold them that are sick with famine!
yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.
If I go out to the country, I see those slain by the sword; if I enter the
city, I see those
ravaged by famine! For both prophet and priest travel to a land they do not know.’”
Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a
spoiler at
noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the
city.
I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. I will bring a destroyer at
noon against the mothers of young men. I will suddenly bring upon them
anguish and dismay.
And it shall come to pass, if ye
diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this
city on the sabbath day, but
hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;
If, however, you
listen carefully to Me, says the LORD, and bring no load through the gates of this
city on the Sabbath day, and keep the Sabbath day holy, and do no work on it,
Then shall there enter into the gates of this
city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in
chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this
city shall remain for ever.
then kings and princes will enter through the gates of this
city. They will sit on the throne of David, riding in
chariots and on horses with their officials, along with the men of Judah and the residents of Jerusalem, and this
city will be inhabited
forever.
And I will make this
city desolate, and an
hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be
astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.
And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this
city, as one breaketh a
potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall
bury them in
Tophet, till there be no place to
bury.
and you are to
proclaim to them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will
shatter this nation and this
city, like one
shatters a
potter’s
jar that can never again be repaired. They will
bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room to
bury them.
Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this
city as
Tophet:
This is what I will do to this place and to its residents, declares the LORD. I will make this city like Topheth.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon this
city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have
hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words.
“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this
city and on all the villages around it every
disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have
stiffened their necks so as not to
heed My words.’”
Moreover I will deliver all the strength of this
city, and all the labours thereof, and all the precious things thereof, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies, which shall
spoil them, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.
I will give away all the wealth of this
city—all its products and valuables, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah—to their enemies. They will
plunder them, seize them, and carry them off to Babylon.
Thus saith the LORD God of Israel; Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands,
wherewith ye fight against the king of Babylon, and against the Chaldeans, which
besiege you without the walls, and I will
assemble them into the midst of this
city.
this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will turn against you the weapons of war in your hands, with which you are fighting the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who
besiege you outside the wall, and I will
assemble their forces in the center of this
city.
And I will
smite the inhabitants of this
city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great
pestilence.
I will strike down the residents of this city, both man and beast. They will die in a terrible plague.’
And afterward, saith the LORD, I will deliver
Zedekiah king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and such as are left in this
city from the
pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those that seek their life: and he shall
smite them with the edge of the sword; he shall not
spare them, neither have
pity, nor have mercy.
‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over
Zedekiah king of Judah, his officers, and the people in this
city who
survive the plague and sword and famine, to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to their enemies who seek their lives. He will put them to the sword; he will not
spare them or show
pity or
compassion.’
He that abideth in this
city shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence: but he that goeth out, and falleth to the Chaldeans that
besiege you, he shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey.
Whoever stays in this
city will die by sword and famine and plague, but
whoever goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who
besiege you will live; he will retain his life like a
spoil of war.
For I have set my face against this city for evil, and not for good, saith the LORD: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
For I have set My face against this
city to bring
disaster and not good, declares the LORD. It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, who will destroy it with fire.’
And many nations shall pass by this city, and they shall say every man to his neighbour, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this great city?
And many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?’
Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly
forget you, and I will
forsake you, and the
city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence:
therefore I will surely
forget you and will cast you out of My presence, both you and the
city that I gave to you and your fathers.
For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.
For behold, I am beginning to bring
disaster on the
city that bears My Name, so how could you possibly go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the LORD of Hosts.’
Then will I make this house like
Shiloh, and will make this
city a
curse to all the nations of the earth.
then I will make this house like
Shiloh, and I will make this
city an object of
cursing among all the nations of the earth.’”
Why hast thou
prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, This house shall be like
Shiloh, and this
city shall be
desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
How
dare you
prophesy in the name of the LORD that this house will become like
Shiloh and this
city will be
desolate and deserted!” And all the people assembled against Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.
Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is worthy to die; for he hath
prophesied against this
city, as ye have heard with your ears.
Then the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This man is worthy of death, for he has
prophesied against this
city, as you have heard with your own ears!”
Then spake Jeremiah unto all the princes and to all the people, saying, The LORD sent me to
prophesy against this house and against this
city all the words that ye have heard.
But Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, “The LORD sent me to
prophesy against this house and against this
city all the words that you have heard.
But know ye for certain, that if ye put me to death, ye shall surely bring innocent blood upon
yourselves, and upon this
city, and upon the inhabitants thereof: for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears.
But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon
yourselves, upon this
city, and upon its residents; for truly the LORD has sent me to speak all these words in your hearing.”
And there was also a man that
prophesied in the name of the LORD, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath-jearim, who
prophesied against this
city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah:
Now there was another man
prophesying in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He
prophesied against this
city and against this land the same things that Jeremiah did.
Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Babylon, and live: wherefore should this
city be laid waste?
Do not
listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live! Why should this
city become a ruin?
For thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the residue of the vessels that remain in this city,
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says about the pillars, the sea, the bases, and the rest of the articles that remain in this city,
And seek the peace of the
city whither I have caused you to be carried away
captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.
Seek the prosperity of the
city to which I have sent you as exiles. Pray to the LORD on its behalf, for if it prospers, you too will
prosper.”
Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;
this is what the LORD says about the king who sits on David’s throne and all the people who remain in this city, your brothers who did not go with you into exile—
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob’s tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the
city shall be builded upon her own
heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof.
This is what the LORD says: “I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents and have
compassion on his dwellings. And the
city will be rebuilt on her own ruins, and the palace will stand in its rightful place.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the city shall be built to the LORD from the tower of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner.
“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when this city will be rebuilt for Me, from the tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.
For
Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, Wherefore
dost thou
prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will give this
city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it;
For
Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying: “Why are you
prophesying like this? You claim that the LORD says, ‘Behold, I am about to deliver this
city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.
Behold the mounts, they are come unto the
city to take it; and the
city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the
pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.
See how the siege ramps are mounted against the city to capture it. And by sword and famine and plague, the city has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What You have spoken has happened, as You now see!
And thou hast said unto me, O Lord GOD,
Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the
city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.
Yet You, O Lord GOD, have said to me, ‘
Buy for
yourself the field with silver and call in witnesses, even though the
city has been delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans!’”
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:
Therefore this is what the LORD says: Behold, I am about to deliver this
city into the hands of the Chaldeans and of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who will capture it.
And the Chaldeans, that fight against this
city, shall come and set fire on this
city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto
Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to
provoke me to anger.
And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this
city will come in, set it on fire, and burn it, along with the houses of those who
provoked Me to anger by burning incense to
Baal on their rooftops and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods.
For this
city hath been to me as a
provocation of mine anger and of my
fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,
For this
city has
aroused My wrath and
fury from the day it was built until now. Therefore I will remove it from My presence
And now therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning this
city,
whereof ye say, It shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the
pestilence;
Now therefore, about this city of which you say, ‘It will be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword and famine and plague,’ this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses of this
city and the palaces of the kings of Judah that have been
torn down for
defense against the siege ramps and the sword:
They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my
fury, and for all whose wickedness I have
hid my face from this
city.
The Chaldeans are coming to fight and to fill those places with the corpses of the men I will strike down in My anger and in My wrath. I have hidden My face from this city because of all its wickedness.
And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and
tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I
procure unto it.
So this
city will bring Me
renown, joy, praise, and glory before all the nations of the earth, who will hear of all the good I do for it. They will
tremble in
awe because of all the goodness and prosperity that I will provide for it.
Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Go and speak to
Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this
city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire:
The LORD, the God of Israel, told Jeremiah to go and speak to
Zedekiah king of Judah and tell him that this is what the LORD says: “Behold, I am about to deliver this
city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it down.
Behold, I will command, saith the LORD, and cause them to return to this
city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a
desolation without an inhabitant.
Behold, I am going to give the command, declares the LORD, and I will bring them back to this
city. They will fight against it, capture it, and burn it down. And I will make the cities of Judah a
desolation, without inhabitant.”
And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.
Then the Chaldeans will return and fight against this city. They will capture it and burn it down.
For though ye had
smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this
city with fire.
Indeed, if you were to strike down the entire army of the Chaldeans that is fighting against you, and only wounded men remained in their tents, they would still get up and burn this city down.”
Then
Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers street, until all the bread in the
city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
So King
Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the
courtyard of the guard and given a
loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the
city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the
courtyard of the guard.
Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this
city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the
pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
“This is what the LORD says:
Whoever stays in this
city will die by sword and famine and plague, but
whoever surrenders to the Chaldeans will live; he will retain his life like a
spoil of war, and he will live.
Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.
This is what the LORD says: This city will surely be delivered into the hands of the army of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.”
Therefore the princes said unto the king, We
beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this
city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the
welfare of this people, but the
hurt.
Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die, for he is discouraging the warriors who remain in this city, as well as all the people, by speaking such words to them; this man is not seeking the well-being of these people, but their ruin.”
My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the
dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the
city.
“My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have dropped him into the
cistern, where he will
starve to death, for there is no more bread in the
city.”
Then said Jeremiah unto
Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou
wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this
city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:
Then Jeremiah said to
Zedekiah, “This is what the LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you indeed surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then you will live, this
city will not be burned down, and you and your household will
survive.
But if thou
wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this
city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.
But if you do not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, then this
city will be delivered into the hands of the Chaldeans. They will burn it down, and you
yourself will not escape their
grasp.’”
So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.
All your wives and children will be brought out to the Chaldeans. And you
yourself will not escape their
grasp, for you will be seized by the king of Babylon, and this
city will be burned down.”
In the ninth year of
Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem, and they besieged it.
In the ninth year of
Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army and laid siege to the
city.
And in the
eleventh year of
Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the
city was broken up.
And on the ninth day of the fourth month of
Zedekiah’s
eleventh year, the
city was breached.
And it came to pass, that when
Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all the men of war, then they fled, and went forth out of the
city by night, by the way of the king’s garden, by the gate
betwixt the two walls: and he went out the way of the plain.
When
Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled. They left the
city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls, and they went out along the route to the Arabah.
Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away
captive into Babylon the
remnant of the people that remained in the
city, and those that fell away, that fell to him, with the rest of the people that remained.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried away to Babylon the
remnant of the people who had remained in the
city, along with the deserters who had defected to him.
Go and speak to Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring my words upon this
city for evil, and not for good; and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee.
“Go and tell Ebed-melech the
Cushite that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am about to
fulfill My words against this
city for
harm and not for good, and on that day they will be fulfilled before your eyes.
And it was so, when they came into the midst of the
city, that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah
slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men that were with him.
And when they came into the
city,
Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and threw them into a
cistern.
Egypt riseth up like a flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers; and he saith, I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.
Egypt rises like the Nile, and its waters
churn like rivers,
boasting, ‘I will rise and cover the earth; I will destroy the cities and their people.’
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the
city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall
howl.
This is what the LORD says: “See how the waters are rising from the north and becoming an overflowing
torrent. They will overflow the land and its fullness, the cities and their inhabitants. The people will cry out, and all who dwell in the land will
wail And the
spoiler shall come upon every
city, and no
city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the LORD hath spoken.
The destroyer will move against every city, and not one town will escape. The valley will also be ruined, and the high plain will be destroyed, as the LORD has said.
How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
How is the
city of praise not
forsaken, the town that brings Me joy?
One post shall run to meet another, and one
messenger to meet another, to
shew the king of Babylon that his
city is taken at one end,
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They
encamped outside the
city and built a siege wall all around it.
And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was
sore in the
city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.
By the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine in the city was so severe that the people of the land had no food.
Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled the city by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away
captive certain of the poor of the people, and the residue of the people that remained in the
city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.
Then Nebuzaradan captain of the guard carried into exile some of the poorest people and those who remained in the
city, along with the deserters who had defected to the king of Babylon and the rest of the
craftsmen.
He took also out of the
city an
eunuch, which had the charge of the men of war; and seven men of them that were near the king’s person, which were found in the
city; and the principal
scribe of the host, who
mustered the people of the land; and
threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the
city.
Of those still in the
city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as seven trusted royal advisers. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the
city.
How
doth the
city sit solitary, that was full of people how is she become as a widow she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary
How
lonely lies the
city, once so full of people! She who was great among the nations has become a widow. The princess of the provinces has become a slave.
I called for my lovers, but they
deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the
city, while they sought their meat to
relieve their souls.
I called out to my lovers, but they have
betrayed me. My priests and elders perished in the
city while they searched for food to keep themselves alive.
Mine eyes do fail with tears, my
bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings
swoon in the streets of the
city.
My eyes fail from
weeping; I am
churning within. My heart is poured out in grief over the destruction of the daughter of my people, because children and infants
faint in the streets of the
city.
They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they
swooned as the wounded in the streets of the
city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’
bosom.
They cry out to their mothers: “Where is the grain and wine?” as they
faint like the wounded in the streets of the
city, as their lives
fade away in the arms of their mothers.
All that pass by
clap their hands at thee; they hiss and
wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the
city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?
All who pass by
clap their hands at you in
scorn. They hiss and
shake their heads at the Daughter of Jerusalem: “Is this the
city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”
Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.
My eyes bring grief to my soul because of all the daughters of my city.
The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their musick.
The elders have left the city gate; the young men have stopped their music.
Thou also, son of man, take thee a
tile, and lay it before thee, and
pourtray upon it the
city, even Jerusalem:
“Now you, son of man, take a brick, place it before you, and draw on it the city of Jerusalem.
Moreover take thou unto thee an iron pan, and set it for a wall of iron between thee and the city: and set thy face against it, and it shall be besieged, and thou shalt lay siege against it. This shall be a sign to the house of Israel.
Then take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between
yourself and the
city. Turn your face toward it so that it is under siege, and
besiege it. This will be a sign to the house of Israel.
Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the
city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and thou shalt take a third part, and
smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt
scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them.
When the days of the siege have ended, you are to burn up a third of the hair inside the
city; you are also to take a third and
slash it with the sword all around the
city; and you are to
scatter a third to the wind. For I will
unleash a sword behind them.
The sword is without, and the
pestilence and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the
city, famine and
pestilence shall
devour him.
The sword is outside; plague and famine are within. Those in the country will die by the sword, and those in the
city will be
devoured by famine and plague.
Make a chain: for the land is full of
bloody crimes, and the
city is full of violence.
Forge the chain, for the land is full of crimes of
bloodshed, and the
city is full of violence.
He
cried also in mine ears with a loud voice, saying, Cause them that have charge over the
city to draw near, even every man with his destroying weapon in his hand.
Then I heard Him call out in a loud voice, saying, “Draw near, O executioners of the city, each with a weapon of destruction in hand.”
And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the
city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that
sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.
“Go throughout the
city of Jerusalem,” said the LORD, “and put a mark on the foreheads of the men
sighing and
groaning over all the abominations committed there.”
And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the
city, and
smite: let not your eye
spare, neither have ye
pity:
And as I
listened, He said to the others, “Follow him through the
city and start killing; do not show
pity or
spare anyone!
And he said unto them,
Defile the house, and fill the courts with the slain: go ye forth. And they went forth, and
slew in the
city.
Then He told them, “
Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go forth!” So they went out and began killing throughout the
city.
Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the
city full of
perverseness: for they say, The LORD hath
forsaken the earth, and the LORD
seeth not.
He replied, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great. The land is full of
bloodshed, and the
city is full of
perversity. For they say, ‘The LORD has
forsaken the land; the LORD does not see.’
And he spake unto the man clothed with linen, and said, Go in between the wheels, even under the
cherub, and fill thine hand with coals of fire from between the cherubims, and
scatter them over the
city. And he went in in my sight.
And the LORD said to the man clothed in linen, “Go inside the
wheelwork beneath the
cherubim. Fill your hands with burning coals from among the
cherubim and
scatter them over the
city.” And as I watched, he went in.
