So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken
captives.
When David and his men came to the city, they found it burned
down and their wives and sons and daughters taken
captive.
We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of
Caleb; and we burned
Ziklag with fire.
We
raided the Negev of the Cherethites, the territory of Judah, and the Negev of
Caleb, and we burned
down Ziklag.”
And David said to him, Canst thou bring me
down to this company? And he said,
Swear unto me by God, that thou
wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee
down to this company.
“Will you lead me to these raiders?” David asked. And the man replied, “
Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hand of my master, and I will lead you to them.”
And when he had brought him
down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great
spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.
So he led David
down, and there were the
Amalekites spread out over all the land, eating, drinking, and
celebrating the great amount of
plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah.
And David
smote them from the
twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which
rode upon camels, and fled.
And David struck them
down from
twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man escaped, except four hundred young men who fled, riding off on camels.
For who will
hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth
down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.
Who will
listen to your proposal? The share of the one who went to battle will
match the share of the one who stayed with the supplies. They will share alike.”
Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell
down slain in mount
Gilboa.
Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount
Gilboa.
And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he
smote him that he died.
Then David summoned one of the young men and said, “Go,
execute him!” So the young man struck him
down, and he died.
And
Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the
pool of
Gibeon: and they sat
down, the one on the one side of the
pool, and the other on the other side of the
pool.
So
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with the servants of David, marched out and met them by the
pool of
Gibeon. And the two camps took up positions on opposite sides of the
pool.
And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell
down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in
Gibeon.
Then each man
grabbed his
opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his
opponent’s side, and they all fell together. So this place, which is in
Gibeon, is called Helkath-hazzurim.
Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore
Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell
down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where
Asahel fell
down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell dead on the spot. And every man
paused when he came to the place where
Asahel had fallen and died.
Joab also and
Abishai pursued after
Abner: and the sun went
down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of
Gibeon.
But
Joab and
Abishai pursued
Abner. By
sunset, they had gone as far as the hill of Ammah opposite Giah on the way to the wilderness of
Gibeon.
But the servants of David had
smitten of Benjamin, and of
Abner’s men, so that three hundred and
threescore men died.
but they had struck
down 360 Benjamites who were with
Abner.
And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David
sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be
down.
Then all the people came and urged David to eat something while it was still day, but David took an oath, saying, “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!”
But when the Philistines heard that they had
anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went
down to the hold.
When the Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went
down to the
stronghold.
And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and
smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to
Gazer.
So David did as the LORD had commanded him, and he struck
down the Philistines all the way from
Gibeon to
Gezer.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Uzzah; and God
smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.
And the anger of the LORD burned against Uzzah, and God struck him
down on the spot for his
irreverence, and he died there beside the ark of God.
And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul’s daughter looked through a window, and saw king David
leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she
despised him in her heart.
As the ark of the LORD was entering the City of David, Saul’s daughter Michal looked
down from a window and saw King David
leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she
despised him in her heart.
And he
smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them
down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie
down on the ground, and measured them off with a cord. He measured off with two lengths those to be put to death, and with one length those to be
spared. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.
And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David
slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men.
When the Arameans of Damascus came to help King Hadadezer of Zobah, David struck down twenty-two thousand men.
And David
gat him a name when he returned from
smiting of the Syrians in the valley of salt, being eighteen thousand men.
And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should show regard for a dead dog like me?”
And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David
slew the men of seven hundred
chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand
horsemen, and
smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach the commander of their army, who died there.
And David said to Uriah, Go
down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and there followed him a
mess of meat from the king.
Then he said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king followed him.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not
down to his house.
But Uriah
slept at the door of the palace with all his master’s servants; he did not go
down to his house.
And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not
down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then
didst thou not go
down unto thine house?
And David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” “
Haven’t you just arrived from a journey?” David asked Uriah. “Why didn’t you go home?”
And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him
drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not
down to his house.
Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah
drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie
down on his
cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.
And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the
forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be
smitten, and die.
In the letter he wrote: “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle; then withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and killed.”
And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee
down on thy bed, and make
thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand.
Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
So Amnon lay
down and
feigned illness. When the king came to see him, Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house; and he was laid
down. And she took flour, and
kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and did
bake the cakes.
So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying
down. She took some
dough,
kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and
baked them.
And she took a pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.
Then she brought the pan and set it
down before him, but he refused to eat. “Send
everyone away!” said Amnon. And
everyone went out.
Now
Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is
merry with wine, and when I say unto you,
Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be
courageous and be
valiant.
Now
Absalom had ordered his young men, “Watch Amnon until his heart is
merry with wine, and when I order you to strike Amnon
down, you are to kill him. Do not be afraid. Have I not commanded you? Be
courageous and
valiant!”
And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that
tidings came to David, saying,
Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left.
While they were on the way, a report reached David: “
Absalom has struck
down all the sons of the king; not one of them is left!”
Then the king arose, and
tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.
Then the king stood up,
tore his clothes, and lay
down on the ground; and all his servants stood by with their clothes
torn.
But
Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
Meanwhile,
Absalom had fled. When the young man standing watch looked up, he saw many people coming
down the road west of him, along the side of the hill. And the
watchman went and reported to the king, “I see men coming from the direction of Horonaim, along the side of the hill.”
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck
down his brother, that we may put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
And it was so, that when any man came
nigh to him to do him
obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and
kissed him.
Also, when
anyone approached to bow
down to him,
Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and
kiss him.
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and
down with us? seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
In fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
And lo
Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set
down the ark of God; and
Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set
down the ark of God, and
Abiathar offered sacrifices until the people had passed out of the city.
And I will come upon him while he is
weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall
flee; and I will
smite the king only:
I will attack him while he is weak and
weary; I will throw him into a
panic, and all the people with him will
flee; I will strike
down only the king
Moreover, if he be
gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.
If he retreats to a city, all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will
drag it
down to the valley until not even a
pebble can be found.”
Nevertheless a
lad saw them, and told
Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court;
whither they went
down.
But a young man did see them and told
Absalom. So the two left quickly and came to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his
courtyard, and they
climbed down into it.
And
Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell
down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
Then
Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!” And he bowed facedown before the king. He continued, “Blessed be the LORD your God! He has delivered up the men who raised their hands against my lord the king.”
And Shimei the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came
down with the men of Judah to meet king David.
Then Shimei son of
Gera, a
Benjamite from Bahurim,
hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David,
And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.
along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as Ziba the
steward of the house of Saul and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They
rushed down to the Jordan before the king
And there went over a
ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of
Gera fell
down before the king, as he was come over Jordan;
and crossed at the
ford to carry over the king’s household and to do what was good in his sight. When Shimei son of
Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell
down before the king
For thy servant
doth know that I have
sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go
down to meet my lord the king.
For your servant knows that I have
sinned, so here I am
today as the first of all the house of Joseph to come
down to meet my lord the king.”
And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came
down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor
trimmed his
beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.
Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went
down to meet the king. He had not cared for his feet or
trimmed his
mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king had left until the day he returned safely.
And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and send him on his way from there.
And they came and besieged him in
Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the
trench: and all the people that were with
Joab battered the wall, to throw it
down.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven poured
down on the bodies, she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of
Jonathan his son from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, which had
stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had
hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in
Gilboa:
he went and took the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan from the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, who had
stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies after they had struck
down Saul at
Gilboa.
Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went
down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed
faint.
Once again the Philistines
waged war against Israel, and David and his servants went
down and fought against the Philistines; but David became exhausted.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet.
He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.
And the
afflicted people thou
wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the
haughty, that thou mayest bring them
down.
You save an
afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the
haughty to bring them
down.
It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me,
the God who avenges me and brings down nations beneath me,
But he stood in the midst of the ground, and defended it, and
slew the Philistines: and the LORD wrought a great victory.
But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field, defended it, and struck down the Philistines. So the LORD brought about a great victory.
And three of the thirty chief went
down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of
Adullam: and the
troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of
Rephaim.
At harvest time, three of the thirty chief men went
down to David at the cave of
Adullam, while a company of Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of
Rephaim.
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a
valiant man, of Kabzeel, who had done many acts, he
slew two
lionlike men of Moab: he went
down also and
slew a lion in the midst of a pit in time of snow:
And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of
valor from Kabzeel, a man of many exploits. He struck
down two champions of Moab, and on a
snowy day he went
down into a pit and killed a lion.
And he
slew an Egyptian, a goodly man: and the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand; but he went
down to him with a staff, and
plucked the
spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and
slew him with his own
spear.
He also killed an Egyptian, a huge man. Although the Egyptian had a
spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club,
snatched the
spear from his hand, and killed the Egyptian with his own
spear.
And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that
smote the people, and said, Lo, I have
sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.
When David saw the angel striking
down the people, he said to the LORD, “Surely I, the
shepherd, have
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house.”
And Bath-
sheba bowed, and did
obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
And Bathsheba bowed
down in
homage to the king, who asked, “What is your desire?”
For he is gone
down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
For
today he has gone
down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and
Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to
ride upon mine own
mule, and bring him
down to
Gihon:
“Take my servants with you,” said the king. “Set my son Solomon on my own
mule and take him
down to
Gihon.
So
Zadok the priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went
down, and caused Solomon to
ride upon king David’s
mule, and brought him to
Gihon.
Then
Zadok the priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, went
down and set Solomon on King David’s
mule, and they
escorted him to
Gihon.
So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar, and he came and bowed down before King Solomon, who said to him, “Go to your home.”
Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his
hoar head go
down to the grave in peace.
So act according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray head go
down to
Sheol in peace.
And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite of Bahurim, which
cursed me with a
grievous curse in the day when I went to
Mahanaim: but he came
down to meet me at Jordan, and I
sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.
Keep an eye on Shimei the son of
Gera, the
Benjamite from Bahurim who is with you. He called
down bitter curses against me on the day I went to
Mahanaim, but when he came
down to meet me at the Jordan, I
swore to him by the LORD: ‘I will never put you to the sword.’
Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his
hoar head bring thou
down to the grave with blood.
Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless, for you are a wise man. You know what you ought to do to him to bring his gray head
down to
Sheol in blood.”
And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee
nay,) that he give me
Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
Adonijah replied, “Please speak to King Solomon, since he will not turn you
down. Let him give me
Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
Bath-
sheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat
down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. The king stood up to
greet her, bowed to her, and sat
down on his throne. Then the king had a throne brought for his mother, who sat
down at his right hand.
And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
So King Solomon sent the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck down Adonijah, and he died.
And it was told king Solomon that
Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.
It was reported to King Solomon: “
Joab has fled to the tent of the LORD and is now beside the altar.” So Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, “Go, strike him
down!”
And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and
bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which
Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.
And the king replied, “Do just as he says. Strike him
down and
bury him, and so remove from me and from the house of my father the innocent blood that
Joab shed.
And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and
slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit,
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and
Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
The LORD will bring his
bloodshed back upon his own head, for without the knowledge of my father David he struck
down two men more righteous and better than he when he put to the sword
Abner son of
Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and
Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.
So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and
slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, struck
down Joab, and killed him. He was buried at his own home in the wilderness.
So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. Thus the kingdom was firmly established in the hand of Solomon.
Now therefore command thou that they
hew me
cedar trees out of
Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give
hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt
appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to
hew timber like unto the Sidonians.
Now therefore, order that cedars of
Lebanon be cut
down for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants whatever wages you set, for you know that there are none among us as skilled in
logging as the Sidonians.”
My servants shall bring them
down from
Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt
appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt
accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.
My servants will
haul the logs from
Lebanon to the Sea, and I will
float them as rafts by sea to the place you
specify. There I will separate the logs, and you can take them away. And in exchange, you can meet my needs by providing my household with food.”
Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants,
condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and
justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.
then may You hear from heaven and act. May You judge Your servants,
condemning the wicked man by bringing
down on his own head what he has done, and
justifying the righteous man by rewarding him according to his righteousness.
When thy people Israel be
smitten down before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and
confess thy name, and pray, and make
supplication unto thee in this house:
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading with You in this temple,
For Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up, and taken
Gezer, and burnt it with fire, and slain the
Canaanites that dwelt in the city, and given it for a present unto his daughter, Solomon’s wife.
Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured
Gezer. He had set it on fire, killed the
Canaanites who lived in the city, and given it as a
dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.
For it came to pass, when David was in
Edom, and
Joab the captain of the host was gone up to
bury the slain, after he had
smitten every male in
Edom;
Earlier, when David was in
Edom,
Joab the commander of the army had gone to
bury the dead and had struck
down every male in
Edom.
And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an
idol in a
grove; and
Asa destroyed her
idol, and burnt it by the
brook Kidron.
And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he
smote all the house of
Jeroboam; he left not to
Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant
Ahijah the Shilonite:
As soon as
Baasha became king, he struck
down the entire household of
Jeroboam. He did not leave to
Jeroboam anyone that breathed, but destroyed them all according to the word that the LORD had spoken through His servant
Ahijah the Shilonite,
And also by the hand of the prophet
Jehu the son of Hanani came the word of the LORD against
Baasha, and against his house, even for all the evil that he did in the sight of the LORD, in
provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of
Jeroboam; and because he killed him.
Moreover, the word of the LORD came through the prophet
Jehu son of Hanani against
Baasha and his house, because of all the evil he had done in the sight of the LORD,
provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands and becoming like the house of
Jeroboam, and also because
Baasha had struck
down the house of
Jeroboam.
And Zimri went in and
smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year of
Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his
stead.
So in the twenty-seventh year of
Asa’s reign over Judah, Zimri went in, struck Elah
down, and killed him. And Zimri reigned in his place.
And it came to pass, when he began to reign, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he
slew all the house of
Baasha: he left him not one that pisseth against a wall, neither of his kinsfolks, nor of his friends.
As soon as Zimri began to reign and was seated on the throne, he struck
down the entire household of
Baasha. He did not leave a single male, whether a
kinsman or friend.
And the people that were
encamped heard say, Zimri hath
conspired, and hath also slain the king: wherefore all Israel made Omri, the captain of the host, king over Israel that day in the camp.
and the people in the camp heard that Zimri had not only
conspired but had also struck
down the king. So there in the camp that very day, all Israel proclaimed Omri, the commander of the army, king over Israel.
And it came to pass, when Zimri saw that the city was taken, that he went into the palace of the king’s house, and burnt the king’s house over him with fire, and died,
When Zimri saw that the city was captured, he entered the citadel of the royal palace and burned it down upon himself. So he died
And
Elijah took the child, and brought him
down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and
Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
Then
Elijah took the child, brought him
down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. “Look, your son is alive,”
Elijah declared.
And
Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken
down.
Then
Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people approached him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been
torn down.
And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the
trench also with water.
So the water ran
down around the altar and even filled the
trench.
And
Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of
Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and
Elijah brought them
down to the
brook Kishon, and
slew them there.
Then
Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of
Baal! Do not let a single one escape.” So they seized them, and
Elijah brought them
down to the
Kishon Valley and slaughtered them there.
So
Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And
Elijah went up to the top of
Carmel; and he cast himself
down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,
So
Ahab went up to eat and drink. But
Elijah climbed to the summit of
Carmel, bent
down on the ground, and put his face between his knees.
And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto
Ahab, Prepare thy
chariot, and get thee
down, that the rain stop thee not.
On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And
Elijah replied, “Go and tell
Ahab, ‘Prepare your
chariot and go
down before the rain stops you.’”
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat
down under a
juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat
down under a
broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
