And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king.
along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as Ziba the
steward of the house of Saul and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They
rushed down to the Jordan before the
king And there went over a
ferry boat to carry over the
king’s household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei the son of
Gera fell down before the
king, as he was come over Jordan;
and crossed at the
ford to carry over the
king’s household and to do what was good in his sight. When Shimei son of
Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell down before the
king And said unto the
king, Let not my lord
impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did
perversely the day that my lord the
king went out of Jerusalem, that the
king should take it to his heart.
and said, “My lord, do not hold me guilty, and do not remember your servant’s
wrongdoing on the day my lord the
king left Jerusalem. May the
king not take it to heart.
For thy servant
doth know that I have
sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the
king.
For your servant knows that I have
sinned, so here I am
today as the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the
king.”
And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be
adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day
king over Israel?
And David replied, “Sons of Zeruiah, what have I to do with you, that you should be my
adversaries today? Should any man be put to death in Israel
today? Am I not indeed aware that
today I am
king over Israel?”
Therefore the
king said unto Shimei, Thou shalt not die. And the
king sware unto him.
So the
king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the
king swore an oath to him.
And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the
king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor
trimmed his
beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the
king departed until the day he came again in peace.
Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down to meet the
king. He had not cared for his feet or
trimmed his
mustache or washed his clothes from the day the
king had left until the day he returned safely.
And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth?
And he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, who asked him, “Mephibosheth, why did you not go with me?”
And he answered, My lord, O
king, my servant
deceived me: for thy servant said, I will
saddle me an
ass, that I may
ride thereon, and go to the
king; because thy servant is
lame.
“My lord the
king,” he replied, “because I am
lame, I said, ‘I will have my
donkey saddled so that I may
ride on it and go with the
king.’ But my servant Ziba
deceived me,
And he hath
slandered thy servant unto my lord the
king; but my lord the
king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes.
and he has
slandered your servant to my lord the
king. Yet my lord the
king is like the angel of God, so do what is good in your eyes.
For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the
king: yet
didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. What right therefore have I yet to cry any more unto the
king?
For all the house of my
grandfather deserves death from my lord the
king, yet you have set your servant among those who eat at your table. What further right, then, do I have to keep appealing to the
king?”
And the king said unto him, Why speakest thou any more of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Ziba divide the land.
The
king replied, “Why say any more? I
hereby declare that you and Ziba are to divide the land.”
And Mephibosheth said unto the
king,
Yea, let him take all,
forasmuch as my lord the
king is come again in peace unto his own house.
And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead, since my lord the king has safely come to his own house, let Ziba take it all!”
And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
Now Barzillai the Gileadite had come down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and send him on his way from there.
Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even
fourscore years old: and he had provided the
king of
sustenance while he lay at
Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.
Barzillai was quite old, eighty years of age, and since he was a very wealthy man, he had provided for the
king while he stayed in
Mahanaim.
And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.
The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me, and I will provide for you at my side in Jerusalem.”
And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?
But Barzillai replied, “How many years of my life remain, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king?
I am this day
fourscore years old: and can I
discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the
king?
I am now eighty years old. Can I
discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the
king?
Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the
king: and why should the
king recompense it me with such a reward?
Your servant could go with the king only a short distance past the Jordan; why should the king repay me with such a reward?
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
And the
king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and
whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.
The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will do for him what seems good in your sight, and I will do for you whatever you desire of me.”
And all the people went over Jordan. And when the
king was come over, the
king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.
So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the
king crossed over. The
king kissed Barzillai and blessed him, and Barzillai returned home.
Then the
king went on to
Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the
king, and also half the people of Israel.
Then the
king went on to
Gilgal, and Chimham crossed over with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel
escorted the
king.
And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the
king, and said unto the
king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah
stolen thee away, and have brought the
king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan?
Soon all the men of Israel came to the king and asked, “Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, take you away secretly and bring the king and his household across the Jordan, together with all of David’s men?”
And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the
king is near of
kin to us: wherefore then be ye
angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the
king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?
And all the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is our relative. Why does this anger you? Have we ever eaten at the king’s expense or received anything for ourselves?”
And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the
king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye
despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our
king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
“We have ten shares in the
king,” answered the men of Israel, “so we have more claim to David than you. Why then do you
despise us? Were we not the first to speak of restoring our
king?” But the men of Judah pressed even harder than the men of Israel.
So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed
Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah
clave unto their
king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.
So all the men of Israel deserted David to follow
Sheba son of Bichri. But the men of Judah stayed by their
king all the way from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the
king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and fed them, but went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in
widowhood.
When David returned to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines he had left to care for the palace, and he placed them in a house under guard. He provided for them, but he no longer
slept with them. They were confined until the day of their death, living as widows.
Then said the
king to
Amasa,
Assemble me the men of Judah within three days, and be thou here present.
Then the
king said to
Amasa, “
Summon the men of Judah to come to me within three days, and be here
yourself.”
The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim,
Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the
king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto
Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.
That is not the case. But a man named
Sheba son of Bichri, from the hill country of Ephraim, has lifted up his hand against the
king, against David. Deliver him alone, and I will depart from the city.” “Look,” the woman replied, “his head will be thrown to you over the wall.”
Then the woman went unto all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of
Sheba the son of Bichri, and cast it out to
Joab. And he
blew a
trumpet, and they retired from the city, every man to his tent. And
Joab returned to Jerusalem unto the
king.
Then the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel, and they cut off the head of
Sheba son of Bichri and threw it to
Joab. So he
blew the ram’s horn and his men
dispersed from the city, each to his own home. And
Joab returned to the
king in Jerusalem.
And the
king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the
remnant of the
Amorites; and the children of Israel had
sworn unto them: and Saul sought to
slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
At this, David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a
remnant of the
Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them, but in his zeal for Israel and Judah, Saul had sought to kill them.)
And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
And they answered the
king, “As for the man who consumed us and
plotted against us to
exterminate us from existing within any border of Israel,
Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will
hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the
king said, I will give them.
let seven of his male descendants be delivered to us so that we may
hang them before the LORD at Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of the LORD.” “I will give them to you,” said the
king.
But the
king spared Mephibosheth, the son of
Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S oath that was between them, between David and
Jonathan the son of Saul.
Now the
king spared Mephibosheth son of
Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the LORD between David and
Jonathan son of Saul.
But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:
But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons whom Rizpah daughter of Aiah had borne to Saul, as well as the five sons whom Merab daughter of Saul had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite.
And the bones of Saul and
Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the
sepulchre of
Kish his father: and they performed all that the
king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.
And they buried the bones of Saul and his son
Jonathan in Zela in the land of Benjamin, in the tomb of Saul’s father
Kish. After they had done everything the
king had commanded, God answered their prayers for the land.
There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth
devoured: coals were
kindled by it.
Through the brightness before him were coals of fire
kindled.
From the brightness of His presence coals of fire
blazed forth.
He is the tower of salvation for his
king: and sheweth mercy to his
anointed, unto David, and to his seed for
evermore.
Great salvation He brings to His
king. He shows loving devotion to His
anointed, to David and his descendants
forever.”
And again the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.
Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel, and He
stirred up David against them, saying, “Go and take a census of Israel and Judah.”
For the
king said to
Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from
Dan even to Beer-
sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.
So the
king said to
Joab the commander of his army, who was with him, “Go now throughout the tribes of Israel from
Dan to
Beersheba and register the troops, so that I may know their number.”
And
Joab said unto the
king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many
soever they be, an
hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the
king may see it: but why
doth my lord the
king delight in this thing?
But
Joab replied to the
king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the
king see it. But why does my lord the
king want to do such a thing?”
Notwithstanding the
king’s word prevailed against
Joab, and against the captains of the host. And
Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the
king, to number the people of Israel.
Nevertheless, the
king’s word prevailed against
Joab and against the commanders of the army. So
Joab and the commanders of the army departed from the presence of the
king to count the troops of Israel.
And
Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the
king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand
valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.
And
Joab reported to the
king the total number of the troops. In Israel there were 800,000 men of
valor who drew the sword, and in Judah there were 500,000.
And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.
When Araunah looked out and saw the king and his servants coming toward him, he went out and bowed facedown before the king.
And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the
king come to his servant? And David said, To
buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
“Why has my lord the
king come to his servant?” Araunah said. “To
buy your
threshing floor,” David replied, “that I may build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague upon the people may be
halted.”
And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the
king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and
threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
Araunah said to David, “My lord the
king may take whatever seems good and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the
threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.
All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.
O king, Araunah gives all these to the king.” He also said to the king, “May the LORD your God accept you.”
And the
king said unto Araunah,
Nay; but I will surely
buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which
doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
“No,” replied the
king, “I
insist on paying a price, for I will not offer to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David bought the
threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
Now
king David was old and
stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he
gat no heat.
Now King David was old and well along in years, and though they covered him with blankets, he could not keep warm.
Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the
king a young virgin: and let her stand before the
king, and let her
cherish him, and let her lie in thy
bosom, that my lord the
king may get heat.
So his servants said to him, “Let us search for a young virgin for our lord the king, to attend to him and care for him and lie by his side to keep him warm.”
So they sought for a fair
damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found
Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the
king.
Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful
girl, and they found
Abishag the Shunammite and brought her to the
king.
And the
damsel was very fair, and
cherished the
king, and ministered to him: but the
king knew her not.
The
girl was unsurpassed in beauty; she cared for the
king and served him, but he had no relations with her.
Then Adonijah the son of Haggith
exalted himself, saying, I will be
king: and he prepared him
chariots and
horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
At that time Adonijah, David’s son by Haggith, began to
exalt himself, saying, “I will be
king!” And he acquired
chariots and
horsemen and fifty men to run
ahead of him.
And Adonijah
slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by En-rogel, and called all his brethren the
king’s sons, and all the men of Judah the
king’s servants:
And Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and
fattened calves near the stone of Zoheleth, which is next to En-rogel. He invited all his royal brothers and all the men of Judah who were servants of the
king.
Wherefore
Nathan spake unto Bath-
sheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith
doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
Then
Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become
king, and our lord David does not know it?
Go and get thee in unto
king David, and say unto him,
Didst not thou, my lord, O
king,
swear unto thine
handmaid, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then
doth Adonijah reign?
Go at once to
King David and say, ‘My lord the
king, did you not
swear to your
maidservant, “Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne”? Why then has Adonijah become
king?’
Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the
king, I also will come in after thee, and
confirm thy words.
Then, while you are still there speaking with the
king, I will come in after you and
confirm your words.”
And Bath-
sheba went in unto the
king into the chamber: and the
king was very old; and
Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the
king.
So Bathsheba went to see the
king in his
bedroom. Since the
king was very old,
Abishag the Shunammite was serving him.
And Bath-
sheba bowed, and did
obeisance unto the
king. And the
king said, What wouldest thou?
And Bathsheba bowed down in
homage to the
king, who asked, “What is your desire?”
And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
But now, behold, Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, did not know it.
And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the
king, and
Abiathar the priest, and
Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
And he has sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the other sons of the
king, as well as
Abiathar the priest and
Joab the commander of the army. But he did not
invite your servant Solomon.
And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
And as for you, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are upon you to tell them who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
Otherwise, when my lord the king rests with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be counted as criminals.”
And, lo, while she yet talked with the
king,
Nathan the prophet also came in.
And just then, while Bathsheba was still speaking with the
king,
Nathan the prophet arrived.
And they told the
king, saying, Behold
Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the
king, he bowed himself before the
king with his face to the ground.
So the
king was told, “
Nathan the prophet is here.” And
Nathan went in and bowed facedown before the
king.
And
Nathan said, My lord, O
king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
“My lord the
king,” said
Nathan, “did you say, ‘Adonijah will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne’?
For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the
king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save
king Adonijah.
For
today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the
king, the commanders of the army, and
Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live
King Adonijah!’
Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
Has my lord the king let this happen without informing your servant who should sit on the throne after my lord the king?”
Then
king David answered and said, Call me Bath-
sheba. And she came into the
king’s presence, and stood before the
king.
Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba for me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before him.
And the
king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
And the
king swore an oath, saying, “As surely as the LORD lives, who has redeemed my life from all distress,
Then Bath-
sheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the
king, and said, Let my lord
king David live for ever.
Bathsheba bowed facedown in
homage to the
king and said, “May my lord
King David live
forever!”
And
king David said, Call me
Zadok the priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the
king.
Then
King David said, “Call in for me
Zadok the priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the
king.
The
king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to
ride upon mine own
mule, and bring him down to
Gihon:
“Take my servants with you,” said the
king. “Set my son Solomon on my own
mule and take him down to
Gihon.
And let
Zadok the priest and
Nathan the prophet
anoint him there
king over Israel: and blow ye with the
trumpet, and say, God save
king Solomon.
There
Zadok the priest and
Nathan the prophet are to
anoint him
king over Israel. You are to blow the ram’s horn and declare, ‘Long live
King Solomon!’
Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be
king in my
stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
Then you shall go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. For I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah.”
And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the
king, and said,
Amen: the LORD God of my lord the
king say so too.
“
Amen,” replied Benaiah son of Jehoiada. “May the LORD, the God of my lord the
king, so declare it.
As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
Just as the LORD was with my lord the king, so may He be with Solomon and make his throne even greater than that of my lord King David.”
So
Zadok the priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to
ride upon
king David’s
mule, and brought him to
Gihon.
Then
Zadok the priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, went down and set Solomon on
King David’s
mule, and they
escorted him to
Gihon.
And
Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and
anointed Solomon. And they
blew the
trumpet; and all the people said, God save
king Solomon.
Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and
anointed Solomon. Then they
blew the ram’s horn, and all the people proclaimed, “Long live
King Solomon!”
And
Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah,
Verily our lord
king David hath made Solomon
king.
“Not at all,”
Jonathan replied. “Our lord
King David has made Solomon
king.
And the
king hath sent with him
Zadok the priest, and
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to
ride upon the
king’s
mule:
And with Solomon, the
king has sent
Zadok the priest,
Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, along with the Cherethites and Pelethites, and they have set him on the
king’s
mule.
And
Zadok the priest and
Nathan the prophet have
anointed him
king in
Gihon: and they are come up from thence
rejoicing, so that the city
rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
Zadok the priest and
Nathan the prophet have
anointed him
king at
Gihon, and they have gone up from there with
rejoicing that rings out in the city. That is the noise you hear.
And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne.
And moreover the
king’s servants came to
bless our lord
king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the
king bowed himself upon the bed.
The
king’s servants have also gone to
congratulate our lord
King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than your own name, and may He make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the
king has bowed in worship on his bed,
And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
saying, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel!
Today He has provided one to sit on my throne, and my eyes have seen it.’”
And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth
king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let
king Solomon
swear unto me to day that he will not
slay his servant with the sword.
It was reported to Solomon: “Behold, Adonijah fears
King Solomon, and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let
King Solomon first
swear to me not to put his servant to the sword.’”
So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar, and he came and bowed down before King Solomon, who said to him, “Go to your home.”
But
shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of
Absalom thy brother.
But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, because they stood by me when I fled from your brother
Absalom.
Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.
So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established.
And he said, Thou knowest that the
kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign:
howbeit the
kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.
“You know that the
kingship was mine,” he said. “All Israel expected that I should reign, but the
kingship has turned to my brother, for it has come to him from the LORD.
And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the
king, (for he will not say thee
nay,) that he give me
Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
Adonijah replied, “Please speak to
King Solomon, since he will not turn you down. Let him give me
Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.”
And Bath-
sheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the
king.
“Very well,” Bathsheba replied. “I will speak to the king for you.”
Bath-
sheba therefore went unto
king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the
king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the
king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
So Bathsheba went to
King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah. The
king stood up to
greet her, bowed to her, and sat down on his throne. Then the
king had a throne brought for his mother, who sat down at his right hand.
Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not
nay. And the
king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee
nay.
“I have just one small request of you,” she said. “Do not deny me.” “Make your request, my mother,” the king replied, “for I will not deny you.”
And
king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why
dost thou ask
Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the
kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for
Abiathar the priest, and for
Joab the son of Zeruiah.
King Solomon answered his mother, “Why do you request
Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Since he is my older brother, you might as well request the
kingdom for him and for
Abiathar the priest and for
Joab son of Zeruiah!”
Then
king Solomon
sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.
Then
King Solomon
swore by the LORD: “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if Adonijah has not made this request at the expense of his life.
And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
So King Solomon sent the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck down Adonijah, and he died.
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the
king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the
king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
