A man that hath friends
must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.
A man of great anger
must pay the penalty; if you
rescue him, you will have to do so again.
Yea, I
hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
I
hated all for which I had
toiled under the sun, because I
must leave it to the man who comes after me.
For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in
equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
When there is a man who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he
must give his portion to a man who has not worked for it, this too is
futile and a great evil.
If the iron be
blunt, and he do not
whet the edge, then
must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
If the
axe is dull and the
blade unsharpened, more strength
must be exerted, but skill produces success.
I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I
defile them?
I have taken off my
robe—
must I put it back on? I have washed my feet—
must I soil them again?
My
vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon,
must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
But my own
vineyard is mine to give; the thousand shekels are for you, O Solomon, and two hundred are for those who tend its fruit.
The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a
tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts
mustereth the host of the battle.
Listen, a
tumult on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!
Listen, an
uproar among the kingdoms, like nations gathered together! The LORD of Hosts is
mobilizing an army for war.
The burden upon Arabia. In the forest in Arabia shall ye
lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanim.
This is the burden against Arabia: In the thickets of Arabia you
must lodge, O caravans of Dedanites.
Therefore hath the
curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are
desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
Therefore a
curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants
must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers have been burned, and only a few
survive.
For they hear: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there.”
Grain for bread
must be ground, but it is not endlessly
threshed. Though the wheels of the
cart roll over it, the horses do not
crush it.
But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars
Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ is He not the One whose high places and altars
Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You
must worship before this altar’?
I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.
I said, “In the prime of my life I
must go through the gates of
Sheol and be deprived of the remainder of my years.”
But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and
whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ For to
everyone I send you, you
must go, and all that I command you, you
must speak.
Withhold thy foot from being
unshod, and thy throat from
thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.
You should have kept your feet from going bare and your throat from being
thirsty. But you said, ‘It is hopeless! For I love foreign gods, and I
must go after them.’
How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the
trumpet?
How long must I see the signal flag and hear the sound of the horn?
For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,
Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Cut down the trees and raise a siege
ramp against Jerusalem. This city
must be punished; there is nothing but oppression in her midst.
But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.
but this is what I commanded them: Obey Me, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must walk in all the ways I have commanded you, so that it may go well with you.
But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.
Therefore you
must say to them, ‘This is the nation that would not
listen to the voice of the LORD their God and would not receive correction. Truth has perished; it has disappeared from their lips.
They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
Like scarecrows in a
cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They
must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no
harm, and neither can they do any good.”
Woe is me for my
hurt! my wound is
grievous: but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I
must bear it.
Woe to me because of my brokenness; my wound is
grievous! But I said, “This is truly my sickness, and I
must bear it.”
And say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel;
Cursed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant,
You
must tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
Cursed is the man who does not obey the words of this covenant,
Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying,
Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:
Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the people of Anathoth who are seeking your life and saying, “You
must not
prophesy in the name of the LORD, or you will die by our hand.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the
vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words that are noble instead of worthless, you will be My
spokesman. It is they who
must turn to you, but you
must not turn to them.
Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.
“You must not marry or have sons or daughters in this place.”
Thou shalt not also go into the house of feasting, to sit with them to eat and to drink.
You must not enter a house where there is feasting and sit down with them to eat and drink.
Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but
hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.
You must not carry a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath day, but you must keep the Sabbath day holy, just as I commanded your forefathers.
And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink it, you are to tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘You most certainly must drink it!
Now it came to pass, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak unto all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people took him, saying, Thou shalt surely die.
and as soon as he had finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say, the priests and prophets and all the people seized him,
shouting, “You
must surely die!
Therefore
hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon: for they
prophesy a lie unto you.
Do not
listen to the words of the prophets who say, ‘You
must not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are
prophesying to you a lie.
The LORD hath made thee priest in the
stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is
mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.
‘The LORD has appointed you priest in place of Jehoiada, to be the chief officer in the house of the LORD, responsible for any
madman who acts like a prophet—you
must put him in stocks and neck irons.
At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers
hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.
Every seventh year, each of you
must free his Hebrew brother who has sold himself to you. He may serve you six years, but then you
must let him go free. But your fathers did not
listen or
incline their ear.
Neither shall ye build house, nor
sow seed, nor plant
vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.
Nor are you ever to build a house or
sow seed or plant a
vineyard. Those things are not for you. Instead, you
must live in tents all your lives, so that you may live a long time in the land where you
wander.’
Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and other, and said unto
Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.
When they had heard all these words, they turned to one another in fear and said to
Baruch, “Surely we
must report all these words to the king.”
Then said the princes unto
Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye be.
Then the officials said to
Baruch, “You and Jeremiah
must hide
yourselves and tell no one where you are.”
Then spake
Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to
sojourn there:
Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the
arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are lying! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, ‘You
must not go to Egypt to reside there.’
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have
assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must drink it too.
As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth.
“Babylon must fall on account of the slain of Israel, just as the slain of all the earth have fallen because of Babylon.
He took also out of the city an
eunuch, which had the charge of the men of war; and seven men of them that were near the king’s person, which were found in the city; and the principal
scribe of the host, who
mustered the people of the land; and
threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the midst of the city.
Of those still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as seven trusted royal advisers. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
We have
drunken our water for money; our wood is sold unto us.
We
must buy the water we drink; our wood comes at a price.
Therefore thou shalt set thy face toward the siege of Jerusalem, and thine arm shall be uncovered, and thou shalt
prophesy against it.
You
must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared, and
prophesy against it.
Then he said unto me, Hast thou seen this, O son of man? Is it a light thing to the house of Judah that they commit the abominations which they commit here? for they have filled the land with violence, and have returned to
provoke me to anger: and, lo, they put the branch to their nose.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “do you see this? Is it not enough for the house of Judah to commit the abominations they are practicing here, that they
must also fill the land with violence and continually
provoke Me to anger? Look, they are even putting the branch to their nose!
Thou also, which hast judged thy sisters, bear thine own shame for thy sins that thou hast committed more
abominable than they: they are more righteous than thou:
yea, be thou confounded also, and bear thy shame, in that thou hast justified thy sisters.
So now you
must bear your disgrace, since you have brought
justification for your sisters. For they appear more righteous than you, because your sins were more
vile than theirs. So you too
must bear your shame and disgrace, since you have made your sisters appear righteous.
Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and
defile not
yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.
And I said to them: ‘Each of you
must throw away the abominations before his eyes, and you
must not
defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.’
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy
lewdness and thy whoredoms.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because you have forgotten Me and have cast Me behind your back, you
must bear the consequences of your
indecency and
prostitution.’”
Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou
mourn nor
weep, neither shall thy tears run down.
“Son of man, behold, I am about to take away the desire of your eyes with a fatal blow. But you
must not
mourn or
weep or let your tears flow.
Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye
must tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have
drunk of the deep waters, but ye
must foul the residue with your feet?
Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture?
Must you also
trample the rest of the pasture with your feet? Is it not enough for you to drink the clear waters?
Must you also
muddy the rest with your feet?
And as for my flock, they eat that which ye have
trodden with your feet; and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.
Why
must My flock feed on what your feet have
trampled, and drink what your feet have
muddied?’
When the priests enter therein, then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are holy; and shall put on other garments, and shall approach to those things which are for the people.
Once the priests have entered the holy area, they must not go out into the outer court until they have left behind the garments in which they minister, for these are holy. They are to put on other clothes before they approach the places that are for the people.”
And thou shalt offer them before the LORD, and the priests shall cast salt upon them, and they shall offer them up for a burnt offering unto the LORD.
You
must present them before the LORD; the priests are to
sprinkle salt on them and sacrifice them as a burnt offering to the LORD.
It is for the prince; the prince, he shall sit in it to eat bread before the LORD; he shall enter by the way of the
porch of that gate, and shall go out by the way of the same.
Only the prince himself may sit inside the
gateway to eat in the presence of the LORD. He
must enter by way of the
portico of the
gateway and go out the same way.”
And they shall not come near unto me, to do the office of a priest unto me, nor to come near to any of my holy things, in the most holy place: but they shall bear their shame, and their abominations which they have committed.
They must not approach Me to serve Me as priests or come near any of My holy things or the most holy things. They will bear the shame of the abominations they have committed.
And it shall come to pass, that when they enter in at the gates of the inner court, they shall be clothed with linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them, whiles they minister in the gates of the inner court, and within.
When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen garments; they must not wear anything made of wool when they minister at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple.
They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen
breeches upon their loins; they shall not
gird themselves with any thing that causeth
sweat.
They are to wear linen turbans on their heads and linen undergarments around their waists. They
must not wear anything that makes them
perspire.
Neither shall they
shave their heads, nor suffer their locks to grow long; they shall only
poll their heads.
They
must not
shave their heads or let their hair grow long, but
must carefully
trim their hair.
Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away: but they shall take maidens of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that had a priest before.
And they shall not marry a widow or a
divorced woman, but
must marry a virgin of the descendants of the house of Israel, or a widow of a priest.
And in controversy they shall stand in judgment; and they shall judge it according to my judgments: and they shall keep my laws and my statutes in all mine
assemblies; and they shall
hallow my sabbaths.
In any dispute, they shall
officiate as judges and judge according to My ordinances. They
must keep My laws and statutes regarding all My appointed feasts, and they
must keep My Sabbaths holy.
And they shall come at no dead person to
defile themselves: but for father, or for mother, or for son, or for daughter, for brother, or for sister that hath had no husband, they may
defile themselves.
A priest
must not
defile himself by going near a dead person. However, for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister, he may do so,
and after he is
cleansed, he
must count off seven days for himself.
And in the day that he goeth into the sanctuary, unto the inner court, to minister in the sanctuary, he shall offer his sin offering, saith the Lord GOD.
And on the day he goes into the sanctuary, into the inner court, to minister in the sanctuary, he must present his sin offering, declares the Lord GOD.
Ye shall have just balances, and a just
ephah, and a just bath.
You
must use
honest scales, a just
ephah, and a just bath.
All the people of the land shall give this
oblation for the prince in Israel.
All the people of the land
must participate in this contribution for the prince in Israel.
And so thou shalt do the seventh day of the month for every one that erreth, and for him that is simple: so shall ye
reconcile the house.
You
must do the same thing on the seventh day of the month for
anyone who strays
unintentionally or in ignorance. In this way you will make
atonement for the temple.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; The gate of the inner court that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.
“This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘The gate of the inner court that faces east must be kept shut during the six days of work, but on the Sabbath day and on the day of the New Moon it shall be opened.
And the prince shall enter by the way of the
porch of that gate without, and shall stand by the post of the gate, and the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the
threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be shut until the evening.
The prince is to enter from the outside through the
portico of the
gateway and stand by the
gatepost, while the priests sacrifice his burnt offerings and peace offerings. He is to bow in worship at the
threshold of the gate and then depart, but the gate
must not be shut until evening.
But when the people of the land shall come before the LORD in the solemn feasts, he that entereth in by the way of the north gate to worship shall go out by the way of the south gate; and he that entereth by the way of the south gate shall go forth by the way of the north gate: he shall not return by the way of the gate whereby he came in, but shall go forth over against it.
When the people of the land come before the LORD at the appointed feasts,
whoever enters by the north gate to worship
must go out by the south gate, and
whoever enters by the south gate
must go out by the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which he entered, but each
must go out by the opposite gate.
Now when the prince shall prepare a voluntary burnt offering or peace offerings
voluntarily unto the LORD, one shall then open him the gate that looketh toward the east, and he shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, as he did on the sabbath day: then he shall go forth; and after his going forth one shall shut the gate.
When the prince makes a
freewill offering to the LORD, whether a burnt offering or a peace offering, the gate facing east
must be opened for him. He is to offer his burnt offering or peace offering just as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and the gate
must be closed after he goes out.
Moreover the prince shall not take of the people’s inheritance by oppression, to thrust them out of their possession; but he shall give his sons inheritance out of his own possession: that my people be not scattered every man from his possession.
The prince
must not take any of the inheritance of the people by
evicting them from their property. He is to provide an inheritance for his sons from his own property, so that none of My people will be displaced from his property.’”
And they shall not sell of it, neither exchange, nor
alienate the firstfruits of the land: for it is holy unto the LORD.
They must not sell or exchange any of it, and they must not transfer this best part of the land, for it is holy to the LORD.
As soon as you hear the sound of the horn,
flute,
zither,
lyre,
harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you
must fall down and worship the golden statue that King
Nebuchadnezzar has set up.
Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the
cornet,
flute,
harp,
sackbut,
psaltery, and
dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, shall fall down and worship the golden image:
You, O king, have issued a decree that
everyone who hears the sound of the horn,
flute,
zither,
lyre,
harp, pipes, and all kinds of music
must fall down and worship the golden statue,
Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the
cornet,
flute,
harp,
sackbut,
psaltery, and
dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning
fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
Now, if you are ready, as soon as you hear the sound of the horn,
flute,
zither,
lyre,
harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you
must fall down and worship the statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the
blazing fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?”
And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.
The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been spoken is true. Now you must seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”
Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of
Grecia shall come.
“Do you know why I have come to you?” he said. “I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I have gone forth, behold, the prince of Greece will come.
And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall
exalt himself, and
magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall
prosper till the
indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
Then the king will do as he pleases and will
exalt and
magnify himself above every god, and he will speak
monstrous things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been decreed
must be accomplished.
And I said unto her, Thou shalt
abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the
harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.
Then I said to her, “You
must live with me for many days; you
must not be
promiscuous or belong to another, and I will do the same for you.”
For the children of Israel shall
abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an
ephod, and without
teraphim:
For the Israelites
must live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred
pillar, and without
ephod or
idol.
Their heart is divided; now shall they be found
faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall
spoil their images.
Their hearts are
devious; now they
must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their altars and
demolish their sacred pillars.
Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually.
But you must return to your God, maintaining love and justice, and always waiting on your God.
And a man’s uncle shall take him up, and he that burneth him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with thee? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold thy tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.
And when the relative who is to burn the bodies picks them up to remove them from the house, he will call to one inside, “Is
anyone else with you?” “None,” that person will answer. “Silence,” the relative will
retort, “for the name of the LORD
must not be
invoked.”
Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous.
Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to
Jonah, “What
must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through
Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast,
herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
Then he issued a
proclamation in
Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let no man or beast,
herd or flock, taste anything at all. They
must not eat or drink.
I will bear the
indignation of the LORD, because I have
sinned against him, until he
plead my cause, and
execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.
Because I have
sinned against Him, I
must endure the
rage of the LORD, until He argues my case and executes justice for me. He will bring me into the light; I will see His righteousness.
O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou
wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou
wilt not save!
How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save?
Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy
foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’S right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful
spewing shall be on thy glory.
You will be filled with shame instead of glory. You too
must drink and
expose your
uncircumcision! The cup in the LORD’s right hand will come around to you, and utter disgrace will cover your glory.
When I heard, my
belly trembled; my lips
quivered at the voice:
rottenness entered into my bones, and I
trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will
invade them with his troops.
I heard and
trembled within; my lips
quivered at the sound. Decay entered my bones; I
trembled where I stood. Yet I
must wait patiently for the day of distress to come upon the people who
invade us.
These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour;
execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:
These are the things you must do: Speak truth to one another, render true and sound judgments in your gates,
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of
mustard seed, which a man took, and
sowed in his field:
He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a
mustard seed that a man planted in his field.
For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘
Anyone who curses his father or mother
must be put to death.’
From that time forth began Jesus to
shew unto his disciples, how that he
must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and
scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He
must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and
scribes, and that He
must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Then Jesus told His disciples, “If
anyone wants to come after Me, he
must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.
And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the
scribes that Elias
must first come?
The disciples asked Him, “Why then do the
scribes say that
Elijah must come first?”
Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and
perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him
hither to me.
“O unbelieving and
perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long
must I remain with you? How long
must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to Me.”
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for
verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of
