And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall
hew down the
graven images of their gods, and destroy the
names of them out of that place.
Tear down their altars,
smash their sacred pillars, burn up their Asherah poles, cut down the idols of their gods, and
wipe out their
names from every place.
But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his
name there, even unto his
habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:
Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God will choose from among all your tribes to establish as a dwelling for His Name, and there you must go.
Then there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his
name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your
tithes, and the
heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye
vow unto the LORD:
then the LORD your God will choose a dwelling for His
Name. And there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your
tithes and special gifts, and all the choice offerings you
vow to the LORD.
If the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to put his
name there be too far from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy
herd and of thy flock, which the LORD hath given thee, as I have commanded thee, and thou shalt eat in thy gates
whatsoever thy soul lusteth after.
If the place where the LORD your God chooses to put His
Name is too far from you, then you may slaughter any of the
herd or flock He has given you, as I have commanded you, and you may eat it within your gates whenever you want.
Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you,
nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;
the gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, whether from one end of the earth or the other),
And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his
name there, the
tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.
And you are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the
firstborn of your herds and flocks, in the presence of the LORD your God at the place He will choose as a dwelling for His
Name, so that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.
And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:
But if the distance is too great for you to carry that with which the LORD your God has blessed you, because the place where the LORD your God will choose to put His Name is too far away,
Thou shalt therefore sacrifice the
passover unto the LORD thy God, of the flock and the
herd, in the place which the LORD shall choose to place his
name there.
You are to offer to the LORD your God the
Passover sacrifice from the
herd or flock in the place the LORD will choose as a dwelling for His
Name.
But at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his
name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the
passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the season that thou camest forth out of Egypt.
You must only offer the
Passover sacrifice at the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His
Name. Do this in the evening as the sun sets, at the same time you departed from Egypt.
And thou shalt
rejoice before the LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy
manservant, and thy
maidservant, and the
Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are among you, in the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to place his
name there.
and you shall
rejoice before the LORD your God in the place He will choose as a dwelling for His
Name—you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the
Levite within your gates, as well as the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widows among you.
For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
For the LORD your God has chosen Levi and his sons out of all your tribes to stand and minister in His name for all time.
Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.
And it shall come to pass, that
whosoever will not
hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my
name, I will require it of him.
And I will hold accountable
anyone who does not
listen to My words that the prophet speaks in My
name.
But the prophet, which shall
presume to speak a word in my
name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the
name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
But if any prophet
dares to speak a message in My
name that I have not commanded him to speak, or to speak in the
name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death.”
When a prophet speaketh in the
name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it
presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
When a prophet speaks in the
name of the LORD and the message does not come to pass or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken
presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.
And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to
bless in the
name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried:
And the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to serve Him and
pronounce blessings in His
name and to give a ruling in every dispute and case of
assault.
And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil
name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a
maid:
and he then accuses her of shameful conduct and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman and had relations with her, but I discovered she was not a virgin.”
And they shall
amerce him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the
damsel, because he hath brought up an evil
name upon a virgin of Israel: and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.
They are also to fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given a virgin of Israel a bad
name. And she shall remain his wife; he must not
divorce her as long as he lives.
And it shall be, that the
firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the
name of his brother which is dead, that his
name be not put out of Israel.
The first son she bears will carry on the
name of the dead brother, so that his
name will not be
blotted out from Israel.
And if the man like not to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband’s brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband’s brother.
But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He is not willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.”
And his
name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his
shoe loosed.
And his family
name in Israel will be called “The House of the
Unsandaled.”
That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a
basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his
name there.
you are to take some of the firstfruits of all your produce from the soil of the land that the LORD your God is giving you and put them in a
basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His
Name,
And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as he hath spoken.
that He will set you high in praise and name and honor above all the nations He has made, and that you will be a holy people to the LORD your God, as He has promised.
And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.
Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the
name of the LORD, and they will stand in
awe of you.
If thou
wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful
name, THE LORD THY GOD;
If you are not careful to observe all the words of this law which are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and
awesome name—the LORD your God—
The LORD will not
spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall
blot out his
name from under heaven.
The LORD will never be willing to
forgive him. Instead, His anger and jealousy will burn against that man, and every
curse written in this book will fall upon him. The LORD will
blot out his
name from under heaven
Because I will
publish the
name of the LORD:
ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
And Joshua the son of
Nun sent out of
Shittim two men to
spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even
Jericho. And they went, and came into an
harlot’s house,
named Rahab, and
lodged there.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the
name of the place is called
Gilgal unto this day.
Then the LORD said to Joshua, “
Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So that place has been called
Gilgal to this day.
For the
Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall
environ us round, and cut off our
name from the earth: and what
wilt thou do unto thy great
name?
When the
Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this, they will
surround us and
wipe out our
name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great
name?”
And they raised over him a great
heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the
name of that place was called, The valley of
Achor, unto this day.
And they
heaped over
Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of
Achor to this day.
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
And the
name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba; which Arba was a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.

Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the
names of his daughters, Mahlah, and
Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
But Zelophehad son of Hepher (the son of
Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of
Manasseh) had no sons but only daughters. These are the
names of his daughters: Mahlah,
Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
And the coast of the children of
Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of
Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and
smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem,
Dan, after the
name of
Dan their father.
(Later, when the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and fought against Leshem, captured it, and put it to the sword. So they took possession of Leshem, settled there, and renamed it after their father
Dan.)
And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of
Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by
name,

Reuben and the children of
Gad called the altar Ed: for it shall be a witness between us that the LORD is God.

That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the
names of their gods, nor cause to
swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:
So you are not to associate with these nations that remain among you. You must not call on the
names of their gods or
swear by them, and you must not serve them or bow down to them.
And Judah went against the
Canaanites that dwelt in
Hebron: (now the
name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they

names of the seventy-seven leaders and elders of Succoth.
Neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal,

Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of an angel of God, very terrible: but I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name:
So the woman went and told her husband, “A man of God came to me. His appearance was like the angel of God, exceedingly
awesome. I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his
name.
And
Manoah said unto the angel of the LORD, What is thy
name, that when thy sayings come to pass we may do thee honour?
Then
Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your
name, so that we may honor you when your word comes to pass?”
And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?
“Why do you ask my
name,” said the angel of the LORD, “since it is beyond
comprehension?”
And the woman bare a son, and called his

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the
jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramath-lehi.
And when
Samson had finished speaking, he cast the
jawbone from his hand; and he
named that place Ramath-lehi.
But God
clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water
thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the
name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he
named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose

Samson fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek, whose

And there was a man of mount Ephraim, whose

Now a man
named Micah from the hill country of Ephraim

name of the city
Dan, after the
name of
Dan their father, who was born unto Israel:
howbeit the
name of the city was Laish at the first.
They

Dan, after their
forefather Dan, who was born to Israel—though the city was formerly
named Laish.
And the
name of the man was Elimelech, and the
name of his wife
Naomi, and the
name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.
The man’s
name was Elimelech, his wife’s
name was
Naomi, and the
names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from
Bethlehem in Judah, and they entered the land of Moab and settled there.
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the
name of the one was Orpah, and the
name of the other
Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.
who took
Moabite women as their wives, one
named Orpah and the other
named Ruth. And after they had lived in Moab about ten years,
And
Naomi had a
kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his
name was Boaz.
Now
Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a prominent man of noble character from the clan of Elimelech, whose
name was Boaz.
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou
gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man’s
name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.
Then her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you
glean today, and where did you work? Blessed be the man who noticed you.” So she told her mother-in-law where she had worked. “The
name of the man I worked with
today is Boaz,” she said.
Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of
Naomi, thou must
buy it also of
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the
name of the dead upon his inheritance.
Then Boaz said, “On the day you
buy the land from
Naomi and also from
Ruth the
Moabitess, you must also acquire the widow of the deceased in order to raise up the
name of the deceased on his inheritance.”
Moreover
Ruth the
Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the
name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the
name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.
Moreover, I have acquired
Ruth the
Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, to raise up the
name of the deceased through his inheritance, so that his
name will not disappear from among his brothers or from the gate of his home. You are witnesses
today.”
And the women said unto
Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a
kinsman, that his
name may be famous in Israel.
Then the women said to
Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a
kinsman-
redeemer. May his
name become famous in Israel.
And the women her neighbours gave it a
name, saying, There is a son born to
Naomi; and they called his
name Obed: he is the father of
Jesse, the father of David.
The
neighbor women said, “A son has been born to
Naomi,” and they
named him Obed. He became the father of
Jesse, the father of David.
Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his
name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of
Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
Now there was a man
named Elkanah who was from Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of
Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
And he had two wives; the
name of the one was
Hannah, and the
name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but
Hannah had no children.
He had two wives, one
named Hannah and the other Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but
Hannah had none.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his
name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She
named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the LORD.”
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”
Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose

And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
And he had a son named Saul, choice and handsome, without equal among the Israelites—a head taller than any of the people.
For the LORD will not
forsake his people for his great
name’s sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.
Indeed, for the sake of His great
name, the LORD will not
abandon His people, because He was pleased to make you His own.
And between the passages, by which
Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side: and the
name of the one was Bozez, and the
name of the other Seneh.
Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass that
Jonathan intended to cross to reach the
Philistine outpost. One was
named Bozez and the other Seneh.
Now the sons of Saul were
Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchi-shua: and the
names of his two daughters were these; the
name of the
firstborn Merab, and the
name of the younger Michal:
Now the sons of Saul were
Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchishua. His two daughters were
named Merab (his
firstborn) and Michal (his younger daughter).
And the
name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of
Ahimaaz: and the
name of the captain of his host was
Abner, the son of
Ner, Saul’s uncle.
His wife’s
name was Ahinoam daughter of
Ahimaaz. The
name of the commander of his army was
Abner, the son of Saul’s uncle
Ner.
And call
Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will
shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt
anoint unto me him whom I
name unto thee.
Then
invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you are to do. You are to
anoint for Me the one I indicate.”
And there went out a
champion out of the camp of the Philistines,
named Goliath, of
Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose
name was
Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
Now David was the son of a man
named Jesse, an Ephrathite from
Bethlehem of Judah who had eight sons in the days of Saul. And
Jesse was old and well along in years.
And the three eldest sons of
Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the
names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the first born, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
The three older sons of
Jesse had followed Saul into battle: The
firstborn was Eliab, the second was Abinadab, and the third was Shammah.
And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the
champion, the
Philistine of
Gath,
Goliath by
name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
And as he was speaking with them, suddenly the
champion named Goliath, the
Philistine from
Gath, came forward from the Philistines and
shouted his usual words, which David also heard.
Then said David to the
Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a
spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the
name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast
defied.
But David said to the
Philistine, “You come against me with sword and
spear and
javelin, but I come against you in the
name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have
defied.
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his
name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his
name was highly esteemed.
And
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace,
forasmuch as we have
sworn both of us in the
name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and
Jonathan went into the city.
And
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have
sworn in the
name of the LORD, saying, ‘May the LORD be a witness between you and me, and between your descendants and mine
forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and
Jonathan went back into the city.
Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day,
detained before the LORD; and his
name was Doeg, an
Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.
Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day,
detained before the LORD. And his
name was Doeg the
Edomite, the chief
shepherd for Saul.
And one of the sons of
Ahimelech the son of Ahitub,
named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.
But one of the sons of
Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped. His
name was
Abiathar, and he fled to David.
Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou
wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou
wilt not destroy my
name out of my father’s house.
So now,
swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or
wipe out my
name from my father’s house.”
Now the
name of the man was Nabal; and the
name of his wife
Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was
churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of
Caleb.
His
name was Nabal, and his wife’s
name was
Abigail. She was an intelligent and beautiful woman, but her husband, a Calebite, was harsh and evil in his dealings.
And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to
Carmel, and go to Nabal, and
greet him in my
name:
And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.
When David’s young men arrived, they relayed all these words to Nabal on behalf of David. Then they waited.
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his
name is, so is he; Nabal is his
name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his
