Unto the men of the east with the
Ammonites, and will give them in possession, that the
Ammonites may
not be remembered among the nations.
I will give it along with the
Ammonites as a possession to the people of the East, so that the
Ammonites will no longer be remembered among the nations.
Thus saith the Lord GOD to Tyrus; Shall
not the isles
shake at the sound of thy fall, when the wounded cry, when the slaughter is made in the midst of thee?
This is what the Lord GOD says to Tyre: ‘Will
not the coastlands
quake at the sound of your
downfall, when the wounded
groan at the slaughter in your midst?
For thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall make thee a
desolate city, like the cities that are
not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee;
For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘When I make you a
desolate city like other deserted cities, and when I raise up the deep against you so that the mighty waters cover you,
When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old time, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places
desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be
not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living;
then I will bring you down with those who descend to the Pit, to the people of antiquity. I will make you dwell in the earth below like the ancient ruins, with those who descend to the Pit, so that you will no longer be inhabited or set in
splendor in the land of the living.
Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
“Son of man, tell the ruler of Tyre that this is what the Lord GOD says: Your heart is proud, and you have said, ‘I am a god; I sit in the seat of gods in the heart of the sea.’ Yet you are a man and not a god, though you have regarded your heart as that of a god.
Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.
Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’ in the presence of those who
slay you? You will be only a man,
not a god, in the hands of those who wound you.
And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness, thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven.
I will leave you in the desert, you and all the fish of your streams. You will fall on the open field and will not be taken away or gathered for burial. I have given you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the air.
Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and, lo, it shall
not be bound up to be
healed, to put a roller to bind it, to make it strong to hold the sword.
“Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt. See, it has
not been bound up for
healing, or
splinted for strength to hold the sword.
The cedars in the garden of God could
not hide him: the
fir trees were
not like his boughs, and the
chesnut trees were
not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.
The cedars in the garden of God could
not rival it; the
cypresses could
not compare with its branches, nor the plane trees
match its boughs. No tree in the garden of God could compare with its beauty.
And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.
When I
extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and
darken their stars. I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon will
not give its light.
I will also
vex the hearts of many people, when I shall bring thy destruction among the nations, into the countries which thou hast
not known.
‘I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring about your destruction among the nations, in countries you do not know.
And they shall
not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the
uncircumcised, which are gone down to
hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their
iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.
They do
not lie down with the fallen warriors of old, who went down to
Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were placed under their heads, whose shields rested on their bones, although the terror of the mighty was once in the land of the living.
Then
whosoever heareth the sound of the
trumpet, and taketh
not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
Then if
anyone hears the sound of the horn but fails to
heed the
warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.
He heard the sound of the
trumpet, and took
not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh
warning shall deliver his soul.
Since he heard the sound of the horn but failed to
heed the
warning, his blood will be on his own head. If he had
heeded the
warning, he would have saved his life.
But if the
watchman see the sword come, and blow
not the
trumpet, and the people be
not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the
watchman’s hand.
But if the
watchman sees the sword coming and fails to blow the horn to
warn the people, and the sword comes and takes away a life, then that one will be taken away in his iniquity, but I will hold the
watchman accountable for his blood.’
When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou
dost not speak to
warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ but you do
not speak out to
dissuade him from his way, then that wicked man will die in his iniquity, yet I will hold you accountable for his blood.
Nevertheless, if thou
warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do
not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
But if you
warn the wicked man to turn from his way, and he does
not turn from it, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved your life.
Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall
not deliver him in the day of his
transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall
not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.
Therefore, son of man, say to your people: ‘The righteousness of the righteous man will
not deliver him in the day of his
transgression; neither will the wickedness of the wicked man cause him to
stumble on the day he turns from his wickedness. Nor will the righteous man be able to
survive by his righteousness on the day he sins.’
When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.
If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but he then trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, then none of his righteous works will be remembered; he will die because of the iniquity he has committed.
If the wicked restore the
pledge, give again that he had
robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without
committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall
not die.
if he restores a
pledge, makes
restitution for what he has
stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without practicing iniquity—then he will surely live; he will
not die.
Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.
Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But it is their way that is not just.
Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.
Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ But I will judge each of you according to his ways, O house of Israel.”
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will
not do them: for with their mouth they
shew much love, but their heart goeth after their
covetousness.
So My people come to you as usual, sit before you, and hear your words; but they do
not put them into practice. Although they express love with their mouths, their hearts pursue
dishonest gain.
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
Indeed, you are to them like a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, who
skillfully plays an instrument. They hear your words but do
not put them into practice.
Ye eat the fat, and ye
clothe you with the wool, ye kill them that are fed: but ye feed
not the flock.
You eat the fat, wear the wool, and
butcher the
fattened sheep, but you do
not feed the flock.
The diseased have ye
not strengthened, neither have ye
healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.
You have
not strengthened the weak,
healed the sick, bound up the injured, brought back the strays, or searched for the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty.
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no
shepherd, neither did my
shepherds search for my flock, but the
shepherds fed themselves, and fed
not my flock;
‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, because My flock lacks a
shepherd and has become prey and food for every wild beast, and because My
shepherds did
not search for My flock but fed themselves instead,
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the
shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the
shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may
not be meat for them.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am against the
shepherds, and I will demand from them My flock and remove them from tending the flock, so that they can no longer feed themselves. For I will deliver My flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.’
Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have eaten up the good pasture, but ye must
tread down with your feet the residue of your pastures? and to have
drunk of the deep waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet?
Is it
not enough for you to feed on the good pasture? Must you also
trample the rest of the pasture with your feet? Is it
not enough for you to drink the clear waters? Must you also
muddy the rest with your feet?
And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land
devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid.
They will no longer be prey for the nations, and the beasts of the earth will
not consume them. They will dwell securely, and no one will
frighten them.
Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee:
sith thou hast
not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee.
therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, I will give you over to
bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did
not hate bloodshed, it will pursue you.
I will make thee perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not return: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
I will make you a perpetual
desolation, and your cities will
not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I do
not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name’s sake, which ye have
profaned among the heathen,
whither ye went.
Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: It is
not for your sake that I will act, O house of Israel, but for My holy name, which you
profaned among the nations to which you went.
I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.
I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will
summon the grain and make it
plentiful, and I will
not bring famine upon you.
Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were
not good, and shall
lothe yourselves in your own sight for your
iniquities and for your abominations.
Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be
ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.
It is
not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord GOD—let it be known to you. Be
ashamed and disgraced for your ways, O house of Israel!
And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying,
Wilt thou
not shew us what thou meanest by these?
When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you explain to us what you mean by these?’
Therefore, son of man,
prophesy and say unto
Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou
not know it?
Therefore
prophesy, son of man, and tell
Gog that this is what the Lord GOD says: On that day when My people Israel are dwelling securely, will you
not take
notice of this?
So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will
not let them
pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
So I will make My holy name known among My people Israel and will no longer allow it to be
profaned. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall
spoil those that
spoiled them, and
rob those that
robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.
They will
not gather wood from the
countryside or cut it from the forests, for they will use the weapons for fuel. They will
loot those who
looted them and
plunder those who
plundered them, declares the Lord GOD.
Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
Then they will know that I am the LORD their God, when I regather them to their own land, not leaving any of them behind after their exile among the nations.
And the side chambers were three, one over another, and thirty in order; and they entered into the wall which was of the house for the side chambers round about, that they might have hold, but they had not hold in the wall of the house.
The side rooms were arranged one above another in three levels of thirty rooms each. There were ledges all around the wall of the temple to serve as supports for the side rooms, so that the supports would not be fastened into the wall of the temple itself.
For they were in three stories, but had
not pillars as the pillars of the courts: therefore the building was
straitened more than the lowest and the
middlemost from the ground.
For they were arranged in three stories, and unlike the courts, they had no pillars. So the upper chambers were set back further than the lower and middle floors.
When the priests enter therein, then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are holy; and shall put on other garments, and shall approach to those things which are for the people.
Once the priests have entered the holy area, they must not go out into the outer court until they have left behind the garments in which they minister, for these are holy. They are to put on other clothes before they approach the places that are for the people.”
Then said the LORD unto me; This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it; because the LORD, the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut.
And the LORD said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It shall not be opened, and no man shall enter through it, because the LORD, the God of Israel, has entered through it. Therefore it will remain shut.
And the LORD said unto me, Son of man, mark well, and behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears all that I say unto thee concerning all the ordinances of the house of the LORD, and all the laws thereof; and mark well the entering in of the house, with every going forth of the sanctuary.
The LORD said to me: “Son of man, pay attention; look carefully with your eyes and
listen closely with your ears to everything I tell you concerning all the statutes and laws of the house of the LORD. Take careful
note of the entrance to the temple, along with all the exits of the sanctuary.
And ye have
not kept the charge of mine holy things: but ye have set keepers of my charge in my sanctuary for
yourselves.
And you have not kept charge of My holy things, but have appointed others to keep charge of My sanctuary for you.’
Thus saith the Lord GOD; No stranger,
uncircumcised in heart, nor
uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary, of any stranger that is among the children of Israel.
This is what the Lord GOD says: No foreigner
uncircumcised in heart and flesh may enter My sanctuary—
not even a foreigner who lives among the Israelites.
And they shall not come near unto me, to do the office of a priest unto me, nor to come near to any of my holy things, in the most holy place: but they shall bear their shame, and their abominations which they have committed.
They must not approach Me to serve Me as priests or come near any of My holy things or the most holy things. They will bear the shame of the abominations they have committed.
And it shall come to pass, that when they enter in at the gates of the inner court, they shall be clothed with linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them, whiles they minister in the gates of the inner court, and within.
When they enter the gates of the inner court, they are to wear linen garments; they must not wear anything made of wool when they minister at the gates of the inner court or inside the temple.
They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen
breeches upon their loins; they shall
not gird themselves with any thing that causeth
sweat.
They are to wear linen turbans on their heads and linen undergarments around their waists. They must
not wear anything that makes them
perspire.
And when they go forth into the utter court, even into the utter court to the people, they shall put off their garments wherein they ministered, and lay them in the holy chambers, and they shall put on other garments; and they shall
not sanctify the people with their garments.
When they go out to the outer court, to the people, they are to take off the garments in which they have ministered, leave them in the holy chambers, and dress in other clothes so that they do
not transmit holiness to the people with their garments.
Neither shall they
shave their heads, nor suffer their locks to grow long; they shall only
poll their heads.
They must
not shave their heads or let their hair grow long, but must carefully
trim their hair.
Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away: but they shall take maidens of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that had a priest before.
And they shall
not marry a widow or a
divorced woman, but must marry a virgin of the descendants of the house of Israel, or a widow of a priest.
And they shall come at no dead person to
defile themselves: but for father, or for mother, or for son, or for daughter, for brother, or for sister that hath had no husband, they may
defile themselves.
A priest must
not defile himself by going near a dead person. However, for a father, a mother, a son, a daughter, a brother, or an unmarried sister, he may do so,
The priests shall
not eat of any thing that is dead of itself, or
torn, whether it be fowl or beast.
The priests may
not eat any bird or animal found dead or
torn by wild beasts.
And the prince shall enter by the way of the
porch of that gate without, and shall stand by the post of the gate, and the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the
threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall
not be shut until the evening.
The prince is to enter from the outside through the
portico of the
gateway and stand by the
gatepost, while the priests sacrifice his burnt offerings and peace offerings. He is to bow in worship at the
threshold of the gate and then depart, but the gate must
not be shut until evening.
But when the people of the land shall come before the LORD in the solemn feasts, he that entereth in by the way of the north gate to worship shall go out by the way of the south gate; and he that entereth by the way of the south gate shall go forth by the way of the north gate: he shall not return by the way of the gate whereby he came in, but shall go forth over against it.
When the people of the land come before the LORD at the appointed feasts,
whoever enters by the north gate to worship must go out by the south gate, and
whoever enters by the south gate must go out by the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which he entered, but each must go out by the opposite gate.
Moreover the prince shall not take of the people’s inheritance by oppression, to thrust them out of their possession; but he shall give his sons inheritance out of his own possession: that my people be not scattered every man from his possession.
The prince must
not take any of the inheritance of the people by
evicting them from their property. He is to provide an inheritance for his sons from his own property, so that none of My people will be displaced from his property.’”
Then said he unto me, This is the place where the priests shall
boil the
trespass offering and the sin offering, where they shall
bake the meat offering; that they bear them
not out into the utter court, to
sanctify the people.
and said to me, “This is the place where the priests shall
boil the guilt offering and the sin offering, and where they shall
bake the grain offering, so that they do
not bring them into the outer court and
transmit holiness to the people.”
Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could
not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to
swim in, a river that could
not be passed over.
Once again he measured off a thousand cubits, but now it was a river that I could
not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough for
swimming—a river that could
not be crossed on foot.
But the
miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall
not be
healed; they shall be given to salt.
But the swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.
And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall
not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of all kinds will grow. Their leaves will
not wither, and their fruit will
not fail. Each month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will be used for food and their leaves for
healing.”
It shall be for the priests that are
sanctified of the sons of
Zadok; which have kept my charge, which went
not astray when the children of Israel went
astray, as the Levites went
astray.
It will be for the consecrated priests, the descendants of
Zadok, who kept My charge and did
not go
astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went
astray.
And they shall
not sell of it, neither exchange, nor
alienate the firstfruits of the land: for it is holy unto the LORD.
They must not sell or exchange any of it, and they must not transfer this best part of the land, for it is holy to the LORD.
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would
not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he
drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might
not defile himself.
But Daniel made up his mind that he would
not defile himself with the king’s food or wine. So he asked the chief official for permission
not to
defile himself.
The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will
not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a
dunghill.
The king replied to the astrologers, “My word is final: If you do
not tell me the dream and its interpretation, you will be cut into pieces and your houses will be reduced to
rubble.
But if ye will
not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can
shew me the interpretation thereof.
If you do
not tell me the dream, there is only one decree for you. You have
conspired to speak before me false and
fraudulent words, hoping the situation will change. Therefore tell me the dream, and I will know that you can give me its interpretation.”
The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is
not a man upon the earth that can
shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any
magician, or
astrologer, or
Chaldean.
The astrologers answered the king, “No one on earth can do what the king requests! No king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any
magician,
enchanter, or
astrologer.
And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can
shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is
not with flesh.
What the king requests is so difficult that no one can tell it to him except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals.”
That they would desire
mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should
not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
urging them to
plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this
mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would
not be killed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy
not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will
shew unto the king the interpretation.
Therefore Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do
not execute the wise men of Babylon! Bring me before the king, and I will give him the interpretation.”
But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.
And to me this
mystery has been revealed,
not because I have more wisdom than any man alive, but in order that the interpretation might be made known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.
Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which
smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and
brake them to pieces.
As you watched, a stone was cut out, but
not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and
crushed them.
Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the
chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that
smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
Then the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold were
shattered and became like
chaff on the
threshing floor in summer. The wind carried them away, and
not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that had struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with
miry clay, they shall
mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall
not cleave one to another, even as iron is
not mixed with clay.
As you saw the iron mixed with clay, so the peoples will
mix with one another, but will
not hold together any more than iron mixes with clay.
And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall
not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and
consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will
shatter all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, but will itself stand
forever.
And
whoso falleth
not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning
fiery furnace.
And
whoever does
not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into the
blazing fiery furnace.”
And
whoso falleth
not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning
fiery furnace.
There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon,
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego; these men, O king, have
not regarded thee: they serve
not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
But there are some Jews you have appointed to
manage the province of Babylon—
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego—who have
ignored you, O king, and have refused to serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”
Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, do
not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
and
Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego, is it true that you do
not serve my gods or worship the golden statue I have set up?
Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the
cornet,
flute,
harp,
sackbut,
psaltery, and
dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship
not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning
fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
Now, if you are ready, as soon as you hear the sound of the horn,
flute,
zither,
lyre,
harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the statue I have made. But if you refuse to worship, you will be thrown at once into the
blazing fiery furnace. Then what god will be able to deliver you from my hands?”
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O
Nebuchadnezzar, we are
not careful to answer thee in this matter.
But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden statue you have set up.”
Then
Nebuchadnezzar the king was
astonied, and rose up in
haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did
not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.
Suddenly King
Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in
amazement and asked his advisers, “Did we
not throw three men, firmly bound, into the fire?” “Certainly, O king,” they replied.
And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king’s counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.
and when the satraps, prefects, governors, and royal advisers had gathered around, they saw that the fire had no effect on the bodies of these men. Not a hair of their heads was singed, their robes were unaffected, and there was no smell of fire on them.
Then
Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might
not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.
Nebuchadnezzar declared, “Blessed be the God of
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego, who has sent His angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him. They
violated the king’s command and risked their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.
Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.
When the magicians, enchanters, astrologers, and diviners came in, I told them the dream, and they could
not interpret it for me.
This dream I king
Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof,
forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are
not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
This is the dream that I, King
Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the wise men of my kingdom can
interpret it for me. But you are able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was
astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let
not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that
hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
For a time, Daniel, who was also known as Belteshazzar, was
perplexed, and his thoughts
alarmed him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do
not let the dream or its interpretation
alarm you.” “My lord,” replied Belteshazzar, “may the dream apply to those who
hate you, and its interpretation to your enemies!
The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
the king
exclaimed, “Is this
not Babylon the Great, which I myself have built by the might of my power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”
Then came in all the king’s wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.
So all the king’s wise men came in, but they could
not read the inscription or
interpret it for him.
Now the queen, by reason of the words of the king and his lords, came into the
banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let
not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
Hearing the outcry of the king and his nobles, the queen entered the
banquet hall. “O king, may you live
forever!” she said. “Do
not let your thoughts
terrify you, or your face grow pale.
And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could
not shew the interpretation of the thing:
Now the wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this inscription and
interpret it for me, but they could
not give its interpretation.
And thou his son, O
Belshazzar, hast
not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
But you his son, O
Belshazzar, have
not humbled your heart, even though you knew all this.
But hast lifted up
thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have
drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see
not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou
not glorified:
Instead, you have
exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you
drank wine from them with your nobles, wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you have failed to
glorify the God who holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.
And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.
and over them three administrators, including Daniel, to whom these satraps were accountable so that the king would not suffer loss.
Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
Finally these men said, “We will never find any charge against this Daniel, unless we find something against him concerning the law of his God.”
