And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I
put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?
When I saw that you would not save me, I risked my life and crossed over to the
Ammonites, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come
today to fight against me?”
And
Samson said unto them, I will now
put forth a
riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
“Let me tell you a
riddle,”
Samson said to them. “If you can
solve it for me within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.
But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him,
Put forth thy
riddle, that we may hear it.
But if you cannot
solve it, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.” “Tell us your
riddle,” they replied. “Let us hear it.”
And
Samson’s wife
wept before him, and said, Thou
dost but
hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast
put forth a
riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
Then
Samson’s wife came to him,
weeping, and said, “You
hate me! You do not really love me! You have
posed to my people a
riddle, but have not explained it to me.” “Look,” he said, “I have not even explained it to my father or mother, so why should I explain it to you?”
And
Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and
put a
firebrand in the midst between two tails.
Then
Samson went out and caught three hundred foxes. And he took torches, turned the foxes tail-to-tail, and fastened a
torch between each pair of tails.
He found the fresh
jawbone of a
donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and struck down a thousand men.
And
Samson lay till
midnight, and arose at
midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and
put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top of an hill that is before
Hebron.
But
Samson lay there only until
midnight, when he got up, took hold of the doors of the city gate and both gateposts, and pulled them out, bar and all. Then he
put them on his shoulders and took them to the top of the mountain overlooking
Hebron.
But the Philistines took him, and
put out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, and bound him with
fetters of brass; and he did
grind in the prison house.
Then the Philistines seized him,
gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to
Gaza, where he was bound with bronze
shackles and forced to
grind grain in the prison.
Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.
So the five men departed and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living securely, like the Sidonians,
tranquil and
unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking in the land and no
oppressive ruler. And they were far away from the Sidonians and had no alliance with
anyone.
And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?
“Be quiet,” they told him. “Put your hand over your mouth and come with us and be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest for the house of one person or a priest for a tribe and family in Israel?”
So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.
Putting their small children, their
livestock, and their possessions in front of them, they turned and departed.
And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an
ass, and the man rose up, and
gat him unto his place.
“Get up,” he told her. “Let us go.” But there was no
response. So the man
put her on his
donkey and set out for home.
Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of
Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may
put them to death, and
put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not
hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Hand over the wicked men of Gibeah so we can
put them to death and
purge Israel of this evil.” But the Benjamites refused to
heed the voice of their fellow Israelites.
And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel
put themselves in
array to fight against them at Gibeah.
And the men of Israel went out to fight against Benjamin and took up their battle positions at Gibeah.
And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in
array in the place where they
put themselves in
array the first day.
But the
Israelite army took courage and again took their battle positions in the same place where they had
arrayed themselves on the first day.
And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and
put themselves in
array against Gibeah, as at other times.
On the third day the Israelites went up against the Benjamites and
arrayed themselves against Gibeah as they had done before.
And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and
put themselves in
array at
Baal-tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
So all the men of Israel got up from their places and
arrayed themselves at
Baal-tamar, and the Israelites in
ambush charged from their positions west of Gibeah.
And the liers in wait hasted, and
rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and
smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
The men in
ambush rushed suddenly against Gibeah; they advanced and
put the whole city to the sword.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
The Israelites asked, “Who among all the tribes of Israel did not come to the assembly before the LORD?” For they had taken a solemn oath that
anyone who failed to come up before the LORD at
Mizpah would surely be
put to death.
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and
smite the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
So the congregation sent 12,000 of their most
valiant men and commanded them: “Go and
put to the sword those living in
Jabesh-
gilead, including women and children.
Wash
thyself therefore, and
anoint thee, and
put thy
raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not
thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
Therefore wash
yourself,
put on
perfume, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the
threshing floor, but do not let the man know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.
And
Eli said unto her, How long
wilt thou be
drunken?
put away thy wine from thee.
and said to her, “How long will you be
drunk?
Put away your wine!”
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they
hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would
slay them.
If a man sins against another man, God can
intercede for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can
intercede for him?” But they would not
listen to their father, since the LORD intended to
put them to death.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say,
Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And the Philistines
put themselves in
array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was
smitten before the Philistines: and they
slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
The Philistines
arrayed themselves against Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who struck down about four thousand men on the battlefield.
And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the
cart; and
put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a
trespass offering, in a
coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
Take the ark of the LORD, set it on the
cart, and in a chest beside it
put the gold objects you are sending Him as a guilt offering. Then send the ark on its way,
And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the
cart, and the
coffer with the
mice of gold and the images of their
emerods.
Then they
put the ark of the LORD on the
cart, along with the chest containing the gold rats and the images of the tumors.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the
coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and
put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.
And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the chest containing the gold objects, and they placed them on the large rock. That day the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices to the LORD.
And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then
put away the strange gods and
Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid
yourselves of the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
Then the children of Israel did
put away
Baalim and
Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.
So the Israelites put away the Baals and Ashtoreths and served only the LORD.
And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your
asses, and
put them to his work.
And he will take your menservants and maidservants and your best cattle and
donkeys and
put them to his own use.
And Nahash the
Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.
But Nahash the
Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may
put out
everyone’s right eye and bring reproach upon all Israel.”
And it was so on the
morrow, that Saul
put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and
slew the
Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions, and during the morning watch they invaded the camp of the
Ammonites and slaughtered them, until the hottest part of the day. And the survivors were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
Then the people said to Samuel, “Who said that Saul should not reign over us? Bring those men here so we can kill them!”
And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
But Saul ordered, “No one shall be
put to death this day, for
today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.”
And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
And when they entered the forest and saw the flowing honey, not one of them put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.
But
Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he
put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and
dipped it in an
honeycomb, and
put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were
enlightened.
Jonathan, however, had not heard that his father had charged the people with the oath. So he reached out the end of the staff in his hand,
dipped it into the
honeycomb, and
put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes
brightened.
Now go and
smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and
spare them not; but
slay both man and woman, infant and
suckling, ox and sheep,
camel and
ass.
Now go and attack the
Amalekites and
devote to destruction all that belongs to them. Do not
spare them, but
put to death men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and
donkeys.’”
For Israel and the Philistines had
put the battle in
array, army against army.
And Israel and the Philistines
arrayed in formation against each other.
And Saul armed David with his armour, and he
put an
helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of
mail.
Then Saul clothed David in his own
tunic,
put a bronze
helmet on his head, and dressed him in
armor.
And David
girded his sword upon his armour, and he
assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David
put them off him.
David
strapped his sword over the
tunic and tried to walk, but he was not accustomed to them. “I cannot walk in these,” David said to Saul. “I am not accustomed to them.” So David took them off.
And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the
brook, and
put them in a
shepherd’s
bag which he had, even in a
scrip; and his
sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the
Philistine.
And David took his staff in his hand, selected five smooth stones from the
brook, and
put them in the
pouch of his
shepherd’s
bag. And with his
sling in hand, he approached the
Philistine.
And David took the head of the
Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he
put his armour in his tent.
David took the head of the
Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, and he
put Goliath’s weapons in his own tent.
For he did
put his life in his hand, and
slew the
Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and
didst rejoice: wherefore then
wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to
slay David without a cause?
He took his life in his hands when he struck down the
Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel. You saw it and
rejoiced, so why would you sin against innocent blood by killing David for no reason?”
Saul
listened to the voice of
Jonathan and
swore an oath: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be
put to death.”
And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and
put a
pillow of goats hair for his
bolster, and covered it with a cloth.
Then Michal took a household
idol and laid it in the bed, placed some goat hair on its head, and covered it with a garment.
And
Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?
“Why must he be
put to death?”
Jonathan replied. “What has he done?”
So the priest gave him
hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the
shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to
put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
So the priest gave him the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there but the Bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD and replaced with hot bread on the day it was taken away.
And the king said unto the
footmen that stood about him, Turn, and
slay the priests of the LORD; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not
shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not
put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
Then the king ordered the guards at his side, “Turn and kill the priests of the LORD, because they too sided with David. For they knew he was
fleeing, but they did not tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to strike the priests of the LORD.
And
Nob, the city of the priests,
smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and
asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
He also
put to the sword
Nob, the city of the priests, with its men and women, children and infants, oxen,
donkeys, and sheep.
Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some
bade me kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not
put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S
anointed.
Behold, this day you have seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my lord, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.’
And David said unto his men,
Gird ye on every man his sword. And they
girded on every man his sword; and David also
girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.
And David said to his men, “
Strap on your swords!” So David and all his men
put on their swords, and about four hundred men followed David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had
lamented him, and buried him in
Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had
put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.
Now by this time Samuel had died, and all Israel had
mourned for him and buried him in
Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land.
And Saul
disguised himself, and
put on other
raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him up, whom I shall name unto thee.
So Saul
disguised himself by
putting on different clothes, and he set out with two of his men. They came to the woman at night, and Saul said, “
Consult a spirit for me. Bring up for me the one I name.”
And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was
sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine
handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have
put my life in my hand, and have
hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.
When the woman came to Saul and saw how
distraught he was, she said to him, “Look, your
maidservant has obeyed your voice. I took my life in my hands and did as you told me.
And they
put his armour in the house of
Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.
They
put his
armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and hung his body on the wall of Beth-shan.
Ye daughters of Israel,
weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who
put on ornaments of gold upon your
apparel.
O daughters of Israel,
weep for Saul, who clothed you in scarlet and
luxury, who decked your garments with ornaments of gold.
And David said to
Joab, and to all the people that were with him,
Rend your clothes, and
gird you with
sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner. And king David himself followed the
bier.
Then David ordered
Joab and all the people with him, “
Tear your clothes,
put on
sackcloth, and
mourn before
Abner.” And King David himself walked behind the funeral
bier.
Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet
put into
fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people
wept again over him.
Your hands were not bound, your feet were not
fettered. As a man falls before the wicked, so also you fell.” And all the people
wept over him even more.
When one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good
tidings, I took hold of him, and
slew him in
Ziklag, who thought that I would have given him a reward for his
tidings:
when someone told me, ‘Look, Saul is dead,’ and thought he was a bearer of good news, I seized him and
put him to death at
Ziklag. That was his reward for his news!
And when they came to Nachon’s threshingfloor, Uzzah
put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen
shook it.
When they came to the
threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had
stumbled.
But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
But My loving devotion will never be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I moved out of your way.
And he
smote Moab, and measured them with a line, casting them down to the ground; even with two lines measured he to
put to death, and with one full line to keep alive. And so the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought gifts.
David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie down on the ground, and measured them off with a cord. He measured off with two lengths those to be
put to death, and with one length those to be
spared. So the Moabites became subject to David and brought him tribute.
Then David
put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
Then he placed garrisons in
Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went.
And he
put garrisons in
Edom; throughout all
Edom put he garrisons, and all they of
Edom became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David
whithersoever he went.
He placed garrisons throughout
Edom, and all the Edomites were subject to David. So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went.
And the children of
Ammon came out, and
put the battle in
array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and
Ish-
tob, and
Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
The
Ammonites marched out and
arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance of the city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of
Tob and
Maacah were by themselves in the open country.
When
Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and
put them in
array against the Syrians:
When
Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him, he selected some of the best men of Israel and
arrayed them against the Arameans.
And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of
Abishai his brother, that he might
put them in
array against the children of
Ammon.
And he placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother
Abishai, who
arrayed them against the
Ammonites.
And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the
forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be
smitten, and die.
In the letter he wrote: “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle; then withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and killed.”
Wherefore hast thou
despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of
Ammon.
Why then have you
despised the command of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You
put Uriah the Hittite to the sword and took his wife as your own, for you have slain him with the sword of the
Ammonites.
And David said unto
Nathan, I have
sinned against the LORD. And
Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath
put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
Then David said to
Nathan, “I have
sinned against the LORD.” “The LORD has taken away your sin,”
Nathan replied. “You will not die.
And he brought forth the people that were therein, and
put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the
brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of
Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were there and
put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes, and he made them work at the brick kilns. He did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.
Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said,
Put now this woman out from me, and
bolt the door after her.
Instead, he called to his
attendant and said, “Throw this woman out and
bolt the door behind her!”
And Tamar
put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of
divers colours that was on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.
And Tamar
put ashes on her head and
tore her
robe. And
putting her hand on her head, she went away crying bitterly.
So
Joab sent to Tekoa to bring a wise woman from there. He told her, “Please pretend to be a
mourner;
put on clothes for
mourning and do not
anoint yourself with oil. Act like a woman who has
mourned for the dead a long time.
And come to the king, and speak on this manner unto him. So
Joab put the words in her mouth.
Then go to the king and speak these words to him.” And
Joab put the words in her mouth.
And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine
handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that
smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he
slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall
quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.
Now the whole clan has risen up against your
maidservant and said, ‘Hand over the one who struck down his brother, that we may
put him to death for the life of the brother whom he killed. Then we will cut off the heir as well!’ So they would
extinguish my one remaining
ember by not preserving my husband’s name or
posterity on the earth.”
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he
put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
And it was so, that when any man came
nigh to him to do him
obeisance, he
put forth his hand, and took him, and
kissed him.
Also, when
anyone approached to bow down to him,
Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and
kiss him.
And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us
flee; for we shall not else escape from
Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and
smite the city with the edge of the sword.
And David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, “Arise and let us
flee, or we will not escape from
Absalom! We must leave quickly, or he will soon overtake us,
heap disaster on us, and
put the city to the sword.”
And when
Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he
saddled his
ass, and arose, and
gat him home to his house, to his city, and
put his household in order, and
hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the
sepulchre of his father.
When
Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he
saddled his
donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He
put his affairs in order and
hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.
And the man said unto
Joab, Though I should receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not
put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and
Abishai and Ittai, saying,
Beware that none touch the young man
Absalom.
The man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels of silver were
weighed out into my hands, I would not raise my hand against the son of the king. For we heard the king command you and
Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man
Absalom for my sake.’
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be
put to death for this, because he
cursed the LORD’S
anointed?
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be
put to death for this, because he
cursed the LORD’s
anointed?”
And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be
adversaries unto me? shall there any man be
put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?
And David replied, “Sons of Zeruiah, what have I to do with you, that you should be my
adversaries today? Should any man be
put to death in Israel
today? Am I not indeed aware that
today I am king over Israel?”
And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and
put them in ward, and fed them, but went not in unto them. So they were shut up unto the day of their death, living in
widowhood.
When David returned to his palace in Jerusalem, he took the ten concubines he had left to care for the palace, and he placed them in a house under guard. He provided for them, but he no longer
slept with them. They were confined until the day of their death, living as widows.
When they were at the great stone which is in
Gibeon,
Amasa went before them. And
Joab’s garment that he had
put on was
girded unto him, and upon it a
girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the
sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out.
And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you.
The Gibeonites said to him, “We need no silver or gold from Saul or his house, nor should you
put to death
anyone in Israel for us.” “Whatever you ask, I will do for you,” he replied.
And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they
hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were
put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they
hanged them on the hill before the LORD. So all seven of them fell together; they were
put to death in the first days of the harvest, at the beginning of the barley harvest.
Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that
hate me.
You have made my enemies retreat before me; I
put an end to those who
hated me.
And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon
swear unto me to day that he will not
slay his servant with the sword.
It was reported to Solomon: “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon first
swear to me not to
put his servant to the sword.’”
Moreover thou knowest also what
Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto
Abner the son of
Ner, and unto
Amasa the son of Jether, whom he
slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and
put the blood of war upon his
girdle that was about his loins, and in his
shoes that were on his feet.
Moreover, you know what
Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—what he did to
Abner son of
Ner and
Amasa son of Jether, the two commanders of the armies of Israel. He killed them in peacetime to
avenge the blood of war. He
stained with the blood of war the belt around his
waist and the
sandals on his feet.
And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of
Gera, a
Benjamite of Bahurim, which
cursed me with a
grievous curse in the day when I went to
Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I
sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not
put thee to death with the sword.
Keep an eye on Shimei the son of
Gera, the
Benjamite from Bahurim who is with you. He called down bitter curses against me on the day I went to
Mahanaim, but when he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I
swore to him by the LORD: ‘I will never
put you to the sword.’
Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the One who established me, who set me on the throne of my father David, and who founded for me a dynasty as He promised—surely Adonijah shall be
put to death
today!”
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time
put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not
put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and
slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit,
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and
Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
The LORD will bring his
bloodshed back upon his own head, for without the knowledge of my father David he struck down two men more righteous and better than he when he
put to the sword
Abner son of
Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and
Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.
And the king
put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and
Zadok the priest did the king
put in the room of
Abiathar.
And the king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada in
Joab’s place over the army, and he appointed
Zadok the priest in
Abiathar’s place.
So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I was
asleep. She laid him in her
bosom and
put her dead son at my
bosom.
Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.
“As you are well aware, due to the wars
waged on all sides against my father David, he could not build a house for the Name of the LORD his God until the LORD had
put his enemies under his feet.
