And the man of God said unto the king, If thou
wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
And after the
earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a
still small voice.
After the
earthquake there was a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a
still, small voice.
So they
girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben-
hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.
So with
sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-
hadad says, ‘Please
spare my life.’” And the king answered, “Is he
still alive? He is my brother.”
And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that
Ramoth in
Gilead is ours, and we be
still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?
who said to his servants, “Do you not know that
Ramoth-
gilead is ours, but we have failed to take it from the hand of the king of
Aram?”
And
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of him?
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not
still a prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he
doth not
prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is
still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And he walked in all the ways of
Asa his father; he turned not aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD: nevertheless the high places were not taken away; for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places.
And
Jehoshaphat walked in all the ways of his father
Asa; he did not turn away from them, but did what was right in the eyes of the LORD. The high places, however, were not removed; the people
still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.
And it came to pass, as they
still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a
chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both
asunder; and
Elijah went up by a
whirlwind into heaven.
As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a
chariot of fire with horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and
Elijah went up into heaven in a
whirlwind.
And while he yet talked with them, behold, the
messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?
While
Elisha was
still speaking with them, the
messenger came down to him. And the king said, “This
calamity is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die there from the famine in the city; but if we sit here, we will also die. So come now, let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.”
But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.
Nevertheless, the high places were not removed; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.
Save that the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places.
Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there.
Howbeit the high places were not removed: the people sacrificed and burned incense
still in the high places. He built the higher gate of the house of the LORD.
Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense there. Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the house of the LORD.
Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
To this day they are still practicing their former customs. None of them worship the LORD or observe the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments that the LORD gave the descendants of Jacob, whom He named Israel.
It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of
Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that are left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that
still survives.”
And out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and five men of them that were in the king’s presence, which were found in the city, and the principal
scribe of the host, which
mustered the people of the land, and
threescore men of the people of the land that were found in the city:
Of those
still in the city, he took a court official who had been appointed over the men of war, as well as five royal advisors. He also took the
scribe of the captain of the army, who had
enlisted the people of the land, and sixty men who were found in the city.
Now these are they that came to David to
Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of
Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.
Now these were the men who came to David at
Ziklag, while he was
still banished from the presence of Saul son of
Kish (they were among the mighty men who helped him in battle;
And yet again there was war at
Gath, where was a man of great
stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the
giant.
And there was
still another battle at
Gath, where there was a man of great
stature with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all. He too was descended from Rapha,
But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah,
Rehoboam reigned over them.
but
Rehoboam still reigned over the Israelites living in the cities of Judah.
Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and
prospered.
So he said to the people of Judah, “Let us build these cities and
surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is
still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and
prospered.
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might
enquire of him?
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not
still a prophet of the LORD here of whom we can inquire?”
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is
still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set
yourselves, stand ye
still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to
morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you.
You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face them
tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’”
And he sought
Ahaziah: and they caught him, (for he was
hid in Samaria,) and brought him to
Jehu: and when they had slain him, they buried him: Because, said they, he is the son of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart. So the house of
Ahaziah had no power to keep
still the kingdom.
Then
Jehu looked for
Ahaziah, and
Jehu’s soldiers captured him while he was hiding in Samaria. So
Ahaziah was brought to
Jehu and put to death. They buried him, for they said, “He is the grandson of
Jehoshaphat, who sought the LORD with all his heart.” So no one was left from the house of
Ahaziah with the strength to rule the kingdom.
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was
still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Uzziah did:
howbeit he entered not into the temple of the LORD. And the people did yet corruptly.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done. In addition, he did not enter the temple of the LORD. But the people
still behaved corruptly.
Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high places, yet unto the LORD their God only.
Nevertheless, the people still sacrificed at the high places, but only to the LORD their God.
For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the
twelfth year he began to
purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images.
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was
still young,
Josiah began to seek the God of his father David, and in the
twelfth year he began to
cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images.
But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes,
wept with a loud voice; and many
shouted aloud for joy:
But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple
wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this temple.
Still, many others
shouted joyfully.
There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.
Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.
So the Levites
stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye
grieved.
And the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be
still, since
today is holy. Do not
grieve.”
And from above the gate of Ephraim, and above the old gate, and above the fish gate, and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Meah, even unto the sheep gate: and they stood still in the prison gate.
over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel, and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate. And they stopped at the Gate of the Guard.
Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as
Mordecai had charged her: for
Esther did the commandment of
Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.
And while they were yet talking with him, came the king’s chamberlains, and hasted to bring
Haman unto the
banquet that
Esther had prepared.
While they were
still speaking with
Haman, the king’s eunuchs arrived and
rushed him to the
banquet that
Esther had prepared.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was
still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was
still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house:
While he was
still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and
still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He
still retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
Then Job’s wife said to him, “Do you
still retain your
integrity?
Curse God and die!”
For now should I have
lain still and been quiet, I should have
slept: then had I been at rest,
For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be
asleep and at rest
Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.
Or why was I not hidden like a
stillborn child, like an infant who never sees
daylight?
It stood
still, but I could not
discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
It stood
still, but I could not
discern its appearance; a form
loomed before my eyes, and I heard a
whispering voice:
Then should I yet have comfort;
yea, I would
harden myself in sorrow: let him not
spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
It
still brings me comfort, and joy through
unrelenting pain, that I have not denied the words of the Holy One.
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should
prolong my life?
What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What is my future, that I should be patient?
Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other
herb.
While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up quicker than grass.
I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou
wilt not hold me innocent.
I would
still dread all my sufferings; I know that You will not
acquit me.
Though he
slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
Though He
slay me, I will hope in Him. I will
still defend my ways to His face.
Though he
spare it, and
forsake it not; but keep it
still within his mouth:
though he cannot bear to let it go and keeps it in his mouth,
Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Still, their prosperity is not in their own hands, so I stay far from the counsel of the wicked.
They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the
sheaf from the
hungry;
All the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;
as long as my breath is still within me and the breath of God remains in my nostrils,
When the
Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
when the
Almighty was
still with me and my children were around me,
When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;)
Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand and no longer reply?
Hearken unto this, O Job: stand
still, and consider the
wondrous works of God.
Listen to this, O Job; stand
still and consider the wonders of God.
He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and
rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the
trumpet.
Trembling with excitement, he devours the distance; he cannot stand
still when the ram’s horn sounds.
Stand in
awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be
still.
Selah.
Be
angry, yet do not sin; on your bed, search your heart and be
still.
Selah Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest
still the enemy and the
avenger.
From the mouths of children and infants You have ordained praise on account of Your
adversaries, to silence the enemy and
avenger.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
I had
fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Still I am certain to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him:
fret not
thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
Be
still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; do not
fret when men
prosper in their ways, when they carry out wicked schemes.
I was
dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was
stirred.
I was speechless and
still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was
stirred.
Be
still, and know that I am God: I will be
exalted among the heathen, I will be
exalted in the earth.
“Be
still and know that I am God; I will be
exalted among the nations, I will be
exalted over the earth.”
That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
that he should live on
forever and not see decay.
As a
snail which melteth, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.
Like a
slug that dissolves in its
slime, like a woman’s
stillborn child, may they never see the sun.
Which
stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the
tumult of the people.
You
stilled the
roaring of the seas, the pounding of their waves, and the
tumult of the nations.
But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the
hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on
still in his trespasses.
Surely God will
crush the heads of His enemies, the
hairy crowns of those who
persist in guilty ways.
Thou
didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was
still,
From heaven You pronounced judgment, and the earth feared and was still
They were not
estranged from their
lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths,
Yet before they had filled their desire, with the food still in their mouths,
For all this they
sinned still, and believed not for his
wondrous works.
In spite of all this, they kept on
sinning;
despite His wonderful works, they did not believe.
Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God.
O God, be not silent; be not speechless; be not still, O God.
Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be
still praising thee.
Selah.
How blessed are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever praising You.
Selah Thou rulest the
raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou
stillest them.
You rule the
raging sea; when its waves mount up, You
still them.
They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
In old age they will still bear fruit; healthy and green they will remain,
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
He calmed the storm to a
whisper, and the waves of the sea were
hushed.
Surely I have
behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is
weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a
weaned child.
Surely I have
stilled and quieted my soul; like a
weaned child with his mother, like a
weaned child is my soul within me.
If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I
awake, I am
still with thee.
If I were to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; and when I
awake, I am
still with You.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
Instruct a wise man, and he will be wiser
still; teach a righteous man, and he will increase his learning.
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.
For though a righteous man may fall seven times, he
still gets up; but the wicked
stumble in bad times.
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
She rises while it is still night to provide food for her household and portions for her maidservants.
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet
acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I sought to
cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind
still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what was
worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.
Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
So I
admired the dead, who had already died, above the living, who are
still alive.
There is one alone, and there is not a second;
yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and
bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity,
yea, it is a
sore travail.
There is a man all alone, without even a son or brother. And though there is no end to his labor, his eyes are
still not content with his wealth: “For whom do I
toil and
bereave my soul of enjoyment?” This too is
futile—a
miserable task.
If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent
perverting of judgment and justice in a province,
marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.
If you see the oppression of the poor and the
denial of justice and righteousness in the province, do not be
astonished at the matter; for one official is watched by a superior, and others higher
still are over them.
If a man
beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
A man may father a hundred children and live for many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he is unsatisfied with his prosperity and does not even receive a proper burial, I say that a
stillborn child is better off than he.
For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
While my soul was still searching but not finding, among a thousand I have found one upright man, but among all these I have not found one such woman.
Though a
sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
Although a
sinner does evil a hundred times and
still lives long, yet I also know that it will go well with those who fear God, who are
reverent in His presence.
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he
still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
Therefore is the anger of the LORD
kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath
smitten them: and the hills did
tremble, and their carcases were
torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out
still.
Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His people; His hand is raised against them to strike them down. The mountains
quake, and the corpses lay like refuse in the streets.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is
still upraised.
The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall
devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out
still.
Aram from the east and Philistia from the west have
devoured Israel with open mouths.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is
still upraised.
Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an
hypocrite and an
evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out
still.
Therefore the Lord takes no pleasure in their young men; He has no
compassion on their fatherless and widows. For every one of them is godless and wicked, and every mouth speaks folly.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is
still upraised.
And he shall
snatch on the right hand, and be
hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
They
carve out what is on the right, but they are
still hungry; they eat what is on the left, but they are
still not satisfied. Each one devours the flesh of his own offspring.
Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim,
Manasseh: and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out
still.
Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim
Manasseh; together they turn against Judah.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is
still upraised.
Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Nothing will remain but to
crouch among the
captives or fall among the slain.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is
still upraised.
A
dire vision is declared to me: “The
traitor still betrays, and the destroyer
still destroys. Go up, O
Elam! Lay siege, O Media! I will put an end to all her
groaning.”
Be
still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have
replenished.
Be silent, O dwellers of the coastland, you merchants of
Sidon, whose traders have crossed the sea.
It shall even be as when an
hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a
thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is
faint, and his soul hath
appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount
Zion.
as when a
hungry man dreams he is eating, then awakens
still hungry; as when a
thirsty man dreams he is drinking, then awakens
faint and
parched. So will it be for all the many nations who go to battle against Mount
Zion.
For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I
cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit
still.
Egypt’s help is
futile and empty; therefore I have called her
Rahab Who Sits
Still.
It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of
Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that is left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that
still survives.”
“I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet and restrained. But now I will
groan like a woman in labor; I will at once
gasp and
pant.
