They
that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O
Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beer-
sheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
Those who
swear by the guilt of Samaria and say, ‘As surely as your god lives, O
Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as the way of
Beersheba lives’— they will fall, never to rise again.”
I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he said,
Smite the
lintel of the door,
that the posts may
shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will
slay the last of them with the sword: he
that fleeth of them shall not
flee away, and he
that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.
I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and He said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so
that the thresholds
shake.
Topple them on the heads of all the people, and I will kill the rest with the sword. None of those who
flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape.
And the Lord GOD of hosts is he
that toucheth the land, and it shall
melt, and all
that dwell therein shall
mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be
drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.
The Lord GOD of Hosts, He who touches the earth and it melts, and all its dwellers
mourn— all the land rises like the Nile, then sinks like the river of Egypt—
It is he
that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his
troop in the earth; he
that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.
He builds His upper rooms in the heavens and founds His
vault upon the earth. He
summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth. The LORD is His name.
Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
Surely the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,” declares the LORD.
In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
“In that day I will restore the fallen tent of David. I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old,
That they may possess the
remnant of
Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD
that doeth this.
that they may possess the
remnant of
Edom and all the nations
that bear My name,” declares the LORD, who will do this.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
that the
plowman shall overtake the
reaper, and the
treader of grapes him
that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall
melt.
“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the
plowman will overtake the
reaper and the
treader of grapes, the
sower of seed. The mountains will
drip with sweet wine, with which all the hills will flow.
And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.
I will firmly plant them in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land that I have given them,” says the LORD your God.
The pride of thine heart hath
deceived thee, thou
that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose
habitation is high;
that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
The pride of your heart has
deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks whose
habitation is the heights, who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’
All the men of thy
confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men
that were at peace with thee have
deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they
that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.
All the men allied with you will drive you to the border; the men at peace with you will
deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a
trap for you without your awareness of it.
Shall I not in
that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of
Edom, and understanding out of the mount of
Esau?
In
that day, declares the LORD, will I not destroy the wise men of
Edom and the men of understanding in the mountains of
Esau?
And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end
that every one of the mount of
Esau may be cut off by slaughter.
Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be
terrified, so
that everyone in the mountains of
Esau will be cut down in the slaughter.
In the day
that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day
that the strangers carried away
captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou
wast as one of them.
On the day you stood
aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gate and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.
But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day
that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have
rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
But you should not
gloat in
that day, your brother’s day of misfortune, nor
rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor
boast proudly in the day of their distress.
Neither shouldest thou have stood in the
crossway, to cut off those of his
that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his
that did remain in the day of distress.
Nor should you stand at the crossroads to cut off their fugitives, nor deliver up their survivors in the day of their distress.
And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess
that of the
Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
And the exiles of this host of the Israelites will possess the land of the
Canaanites as far as Zarephath; and the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.
Arise, go to
Nineveh,
that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
“Get up! Go to the great city of
Nineveh and
preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”
But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty
tempest in the sea, so
that the ship was like to be broken.
Then the LORD
hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose
that the ship was in danger of breaking apart.
Then the mariners were afraid, and
cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares
that were in the ship into the sea, to
lighten it of them. But
Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast
asleep.
The sailors were afraid, and each
cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s
cargo into the sea to
lighten the load. But
Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
So the
shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be
that God will think upon us,
that we perish not.
The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots,
that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon
Jonah.
“Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this
calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on
Jonah.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew
that he was
fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee,
that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous.
Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to
Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?”
And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know
that for my sake this great
tempest is upon you.
“
Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know
that I am to
blame for this violent storm
that has come upon you.”
Those who
cling to worthless idols
forsake His loving devotion.
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of
thanksgiving; I will pay
that that I have
vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
But I, with the voice of
thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will
fulfill what I have
vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!”
Arise, go unto
Nineveh,
that great city, and
preach unto it the preaching
that I
bid thee.
“Get up! Go to the great city of
Nineveh and
proclaim to it the message
that I give you.”
But let man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and cry
mightily unto God:
yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence
that is in their hands.
Furthermore, let both man and beast be covered with
sackcloth, and have
everyone call out earnestly to God. Let each one turn from his evil ways and from the violence in his hands.
Who can tell if God will turn and
repent, and turn away from his fierce anger,
that we perish not?
Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.”
And God saw their works,
that they turned from their evil way; and God
repented of the evil,
that he had said
that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
When God saw their actions—
that they had turned from their evil ways—He relented from the
disaster He had threatened to bring upon them.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish: for I knew
that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew
that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
And the LORD God prepared a
gourd, and made it to come up over
Jonah,
that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So
Jonah was exceeding
glad of the
gourd.
So the LORD God appointed a vine, and it grew up to provide shade over
Jonah’s head to ease his discomfort, and
Jonah was greatly pleased with the plant.
But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it
smote the
gourd that it
withered.
When
dawn came the next day, God appointed a worm
that attacked the plant so
that it
withered.
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise,
that God prepared a
vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of
Jonah,
that he
fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
As the sun was rising, God appointed a
scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on
Jonah’s head so
that he grew
faint and wished to die, saying, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
And should not I
spare Nineveh,
that great city, wherein are more than
sixscore thousand persons
that cannot
discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
So should I not care about the great city of
Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well?”
The word of the LORD
that came to
Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham,
Ahaz, and
Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
This is the word of the LORD
that came to
Micah the Moreshite in the days of Jotham,
Ahaz, and
Hezekiah, kings of Judah—what he saw regarding Samaria and Jerusalem:
Hear, all ye people;
hearken, O earth, and all
that therein is: and let the Lord GOD be witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple.
Hear, O peoples, all of you;
listen, O earth, and
everyone in it! May the Lord GOD bear witness against you, the Lord from His holy temple.
And the mountains shall be
molten under him, and the valleys shall be
cleft, as wax before the fire, and as the waters
that are poured down a steep place.
The mountains will
melt beneath Him, and the valleys will split apart, like wax before the fire, like water
rushing down a slope.
Woe to them
that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they
practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.
Woe to those who
devise iniquity and plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they
accomplish it because the power is in their hands.
In
that day shall one take up a parable against you, and
lament with a
doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly
spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields.
In
that day they will take up a
proverb against you and
taunt you with this bitter
lamentation: ‘We are utterly ruined! He has changed the portion of my people. How He has removed it from me! He has
allotted our fields to traitors.’”
Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the LORD.
Therefore, you will have no one in the assembly of the LORD to divide the land by lot.
“Do not
preach,” they
preach. “Do not
preach these things; disgrace will not overtake us.”
O thou
that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the LORD
straitened? are these his doings? do not my words do good to him
that walketh uprightly?
Should it be said, O house of Jacob, “Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient? Are these the things He does?” Do not My words bring good to him who walks uprightly?
Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the
robe with the garment from them
that pass by securely as men
averse from war.
But of late My people have risen up like an enemy: You strip off the splendid
robe from
unsuspecting passersby like men returning from battle.
Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at
that time, as they have
behaved themselves ill in their doings.
Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. At that time He will hide His face from them because of the evil they have done.
Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets
that make my people
err,
that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he
that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.
This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead My people
astray, who
proclaim peace while they
chew with their teeth, but declare war against one who puts nothing in their mouths:
Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them.
Therefore night will come over you without visions, and darkness without
divination. The sun will set on these prophets, and the
daylight will turn black over them.
Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel,
that abhor judgment, and
pervert all
equity.
Now hear this, O leaders of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who
despise justice and
pervert all
that is right,
But in the last days it shall come to pass,
that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be
exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD will be established as the chief of the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and the peoples will stream to it.
And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of
Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And many nations will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways, so
that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from
Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
In
that day, saith the LORD, will I
assemble her
that halteth, and I will gather her
that is driven out, and her
that I have
afflicted;
“On
that day,” declares the LORD, “I will gather the
lame; I will
assemble the outcast, even those whom I have
afflicted.
And I will make her
that halted a
remnant, and her
that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount
Zion from henceforth, even for ever.
And I will make the
lame into a
remnant, and the outcast into a strong nation. Then the LORD will rule over them in Mount
Zion from
that day and
forever.
Now why
dost thou cry out
aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken thee as a woman in
travail.
Why do you now cry
aloud? Is there no king among you? Has your
counselor perished so
that anguish grips you like a woman in labor?
Now also many nations are gathered against thee,
that say, Let her be
defiled, and let our eye look upon
Zion.
But now many nations have assembled against you, saying, “Let her be
defiled, and let us feast our eyes on
Zion.”
But thou,
Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me
that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from
everlasting.
But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel— One whose origins are of old, from the days of
eternity.
Therefore will he give them up, until the time
that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the
remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
Therefore Israel will be abandoned until she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of His brothers will return to the children of Israel.
And the
remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a
dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass,
that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men.
Then the
remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like
dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait for man or
linger for mankind.
And it shall come to pass in
that day, saith the LORD,
that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy
chariots:
“In
that day,” declares the LORD, “I will remove your horses from among you and
wreck your
chariots.
Thy
graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands.
I will also cut off the carved images and sacred pillars from among you, so that you will no longer bow down to the work of your own hands.
I will take
vengeance in anger and wrath upon the nations
that have not obeyed Me.”
O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what
Balaam the son of Beor answered him from
Shittim unto
Gilgal;
that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD.
My people, remember what Balak king of Moab counseled and what
Balaam son of Beor answered. Remember your journey from
Shittim to
Gilgal, so
that you may acknowledge the righteousness of the LORD.’”
Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the
scant measure
that is
abominable?
Can I
forget any longer, O house of the wicked, the treasures of wickedness and the short
ephah, which is
accursed?
Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword.
You will eat but not be satisfied, and your hunger will remain with you. What you acquire, you will not preserve; and what you save, I will give to the sword.
For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of
Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels;
that I should make thee a
desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an
hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
You have kept the statutes of Omri and all the practices of
Ahab’s house; you have followed their counsel. Therefore I will make you a
desolation, and your inhabitants an object of contempt; you will bear the
scorn of the nations.”
Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the
vintage: there is no
cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.
That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his
mischievous desire: so they
wrap it up.
Both hands are skilled at evil; the prince and the judge demand a
bribe. When the powerful utters his evil desire, they all
conspire together.
Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her
that lieth in thy
bosom.
Do not
rely on a friend; do not trust in a companion. Seal the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your arms.
Then she
that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her which said unto me, Where is the LORD thy God? mine eyes shall behold her: now shall she be
trodden down as the
mire of the streets.
Then my enemy will see and will be covered with shame— she who said to me, “Where is the LORD your God?” My eyes will see her; at
that time she will be
trampled like mud in the streets.
In the day that thy walls are to be built, in that day shall the decree be far removed.
The day for rebuilding your walls will come— the day for extending your boundary.
In that day also he shall come even to thee from Assyria, and from the fortified cities, and from the fortress even to the river, and from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.
On that day they will come to you from Assyria and the cities of Egypt, even from Egypt to the Euphrates, from sea to sea and mountain to mountain.
Notwithstanding the land shall be
desolate because of them
that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings.
Then the earth will become
desolate because of its inhabitants, as the fruit of their deeds.
Who is a God like unto thee,
that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the
transgression of the
remnant of his
heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the
transgression of the
remnant of His inheritance— who does not retain His anger
forever, because He delights in loving devotion?
The mountains
quake at him, and the hills
melt, and the earth is burned at his presence,
yea, the world, and all
that dwell therein.
The mountains
quake before Him, and the hills
melt away; the earth trembles at His presence— the world and all its dwellers.
The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
The LORD is good, a
stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.
For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are
drunken as drunkards, they shall be
devoured as
stubble fully dry.
There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.
And the LORD hath given a commandment concerning thee,
that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy gods will I cut off the
graven image and the
molten image: I will make thy grave; for thou art
vile.
The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O
Nineveh: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off the carved image and cast
idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible.”
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him
that bringeth good
tidings,
that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
Look to the mountains— the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace!
Celebrate your feasts, O Judah;
fulfill your vows. For the wicked will never again march through you; they will be utterly cut off.
He
that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the
munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong,
fortify thy power
mightily.
And Huzzab shall be led away
captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.
It is decreed
that the city be exiled and carried away; her maidservants
moan like doves, and beat upon their breasts.
Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured
harlot, the
mistress of witchcrafts,
that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.
And it shall come to pass,
that all they
that look upon thee shall
flee from thee, and say,
Nineveh is laid waste: who will
bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?
Art thou better than
populous No,
that was
situate among the rivers,
that had the waters round about it, whose
rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?
Are you better than
Thebes, stationed by the Nile with water around her, whose
rampart was the sea, whose wall was the water?
Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they
flee away, and their place is not known where they are.
Your guards are like the
swarming locust, and your
scribes like clouds of locusts
that settle on the walls on a cold day. When the sun rises, they fly away, and no one knows where.
There is no
healing of thy
bruise; thy wound is
grievous: all
that hear the
bruit of thee shall
clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?
There is no
healing for your injury; your wound is severe. All who hear the news of you
applaud your
downfall, for who has not experienced your constant cruelty?
The burden which
Habakkuk the prophet did see.
This is the burden
that Habakkuk the prophet received in a vision:
Therefore the law is
slacked, and judgment
doth never go forth: for the wicked
doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.
Therefore the law is
paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked
hem in the righteous, so
that justice is
perverted.
Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you.
“Look at the nations and observe— be utterly
astounded! For I am doing a work in your days
that you would never believe even if someone told you.
For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans,
that bitter and
hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces
that are not theirs.
For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans—
that ruthless and
impetuous nation which marches through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own.
Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening
wolves: and their
horsemen shall spread themselves, and their
horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle
that hasteth to eat.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them
that deal
treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man
that is more righteous than he?
Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot
tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You
tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the
creeping things,
that have no ruler over them?
You have made men like the fish of the sea, like
creeping things
that have no ruler.
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Then the LORD answered me: “Write down this vision and clearly
inscribe it on tablets, so
that a
herald may run with it.
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a
taunting proverb against him, and say,
Woe to him
that increaseth
that which is not his! how long? and to him
that ladeth himself with thick clay!
Will not all of these take up a
taunt against him, speaking with
mockery and
derision: ‘
Woe to him who amasses what is not his and makes himself rich with many loans! How long will this go on?’
Shall they not rise up suddenly
that shall
bite thee, and
awake that shall
vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?
Will not your creditors suddenly arise and those who
disturb you
awaken? Then you will become their prey.
Because thou hast
spoiled many nations, all the
remnant of the people shall
spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all
that dwell therein.
Because you have
plundered many nations, the
remnant of the people will
plunder you— because of your
bloodshed against man and your violence against the land, the city, and all their dwellers.
Woe to him
that coveteth an evil
covetousness to his house,
that he may set his nest on high,
that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, to place his nest on high and escape the hand of
disaster!
