Thou shalt not take thee a wife, neither shalt thou have sons or daughters in this place.
“You must not marry or have sons or daughters in this place.”
But as a
wife that committeth
adultery, which taketh strangers instead of her husband!
You
adulterous wife! You receive strangers instead of your own husband!
And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath
defiled his neighbour’s
wife, neither hath come near to a
menstruous woman,
He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not
defile his
neighbor’s
wife or approach a woman during her period.
And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and
defiled his neighbour’s
wife,
though the father has done none of them: Indeed, the son eats at the mountain and defiles his
neighbor’s
wife.
That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not
defiled his neighbour’s
wife,
He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols of the house of Israel. He does not
defile his
neighbor’s
wife.
And one hath committed
abomination with his neighbour’s
wife; and another hath
lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.
One man commits an
abomination with his
neighbor’s
wife; another wickedly defiles his daughter-in-law; and yet another
violates his sister, his own father’s daughter.
So I spake unto the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.
So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And the next morning I did as I had been commanded.
Ye stand upon your sword, ye work
abomination, and ye
defile every one his neighbour’s
wife: and shall ye possess the land?
The beginning of the word of the LORD by
Hosea. And the LORD said to
Hosea, Go, take unto thee a
wife of whoredoms and children of whoredoms: for the land hath committed great
whoredom, departing from the LORD.
Plead with your mother,
plead: for she is not my
wife, neither am I her husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her
adulteries from between her breasts;
Rebuke your mother,
rebuke her, for she is not My
wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove the
adultery from her face and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts.
Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an
adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.
Then the LORD said to me, “Go show love to your
wife again, though she is loved by another and is an
adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and offer
raisin cakes to idols.”
And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept sheep.
Jacob fled to the land of
Aram and Israel worked for a
wife— for a
wife he tended sheep.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy
wife shall be an
harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a
polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘Your
wife will become a
prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be divided by a measuring line, and you
yourself will die on pagan soil. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’”
Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the
wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt
treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the
wife of thy covenant.
Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have broken faith, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take
heed to your spirit, and let none deal
treacherously against the
wife of his youth.
Has not the LORD made them one, having a portion of the Spirit? And why one? Because He seeks godly offspring. So guard
yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith with the
wife of your youth.
For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take
heed to your spirit, that ye deal not
treacherously.
“For I
hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “He who divorces his
wife covers his garment with violence,” says the LORD of Hosts. So guard
yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith.
And
Jesse begat David the king; and David the king
begat Solomon of her that had been the
wife of Urias;
and
Jesse the father of David the king. Next: David was the father of Solomon by Uriah’s
wife,
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
But after he had
pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your
wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had
bidden him, and took unto him his
wife:
When Joseph
woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his
wife.
But I tell you that
anyone who divorces his
wife, except for sexual immorality, brings
adultery upon her. And he who marries a
divorced woman commits
adultery.
And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.
When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law sick in bed with a fever.

But
forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his
wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
Since the man was unable to pay, the master ordered that he be sold to pay his debt, along with his wife and children and everything he owned.
The
Pharisees also came unto him,
tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his
wife for every cause?
Then some
Pharisees came and tested Him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his
wife for any reason?”
And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall
cleave to his
wife: and they
twain shall be one flesh?
and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of
divorcement, and to put her away?
“Why then,” they asked, “did Moses order a man to give his
wife a
certificate of
divorce and send her away?”
Now I tell you that
whoever divorces his
wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman, commits
adultery.”
His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
His disciples said to Him, “If this is the case between a man and his wife, it is better not to marry.”
And every one that hath
forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or
wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an
hundredfold, and shall
inherit everlasting life.
And
everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or
wife or children or fields for the sake of My name will receive a
hundredfold and will
inherit eternal life.
Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
“Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies without having children, his brother is to marry the widow and raise up offspring for him.
Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died without having children. So he left his wife to his brother.
Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? For all of them were married to her.”
When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
While
Pilate was sitting on the judgment seat, his
wife sent him this message: “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered
terribly in a dream
today because of Him.”
But Simon’s
wife’s mother lay sick of a fever, and
anon they tell him of her.
Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever, and they
promptly told Jesus about her.
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife: for he had married her.
For Herod himself had ordered that John be arrested and bound and imprisoned, on account of his brother Philip’s wife Herodias, whom Herod had married.
For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.
For John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife!”
And the

Some
Pharisees came to test Him. “Is it lawful for a man to
divorce his

And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of
divorcement, and to put her away.
They answered, “Moses permitted a man to write his
wife a
certificate of
divorce and send her away.”
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and
cleave to his

‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,
And he saith unto them,
Whosoever shall put away his

So He told them, “
Whoever divorces his
wife and marries another woman commits
adultery against her.
And Jesus answered and said,
Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or
wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the gospel
Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man’s brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
“Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man is to marry his brother’s widow and raise up offspring for him.
Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died, leaving no children.
In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For all seven were married to her.”
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named
Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his
wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
In the time of Herod king of
Judea there was a priest named
Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of
Abijah, and whose
wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Aaron.
But the angel said unto him, Fear not,
Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy
wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid,
Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your
wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.
And
Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my
wife well
stricken in years.
“How can I be sure of this?”
Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my
wife is well along in years.”
And after those days his
wife Elisabeth conceived, and
hid herself five months, saying,
After these days, his
wife Elizabeth became
pregnant and for five months remained in
seclusion. She declared,
To be taxed with Mary his
espoused wife, being great with child.
He went there to register with Mary, who was
pledged to him in marriage and was expecting a child.
But Herod the
tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s
wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
But when he
rebuked Herod the
tetrarch regarding his brother’s
wife Herodias and all the evils he had done,
And he arose out of the
synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s
wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they
besought him for her.
After Jesus had left the
synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, whose mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to Jesus on her behalf,
And
Joanna the
wife of Chuza Herod’s
steward, and
Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
Joanna the
wife of Herod’s household
manager Chuza,
Susanna, and many others. These women were ministering to them out of their own means.
And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, so I cannot come.’
If any man come to me, and
hate not his father, and mother, and
wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters,
yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
“If
anyone comes to Me and does not
hate his father and mother and
wife and children and brothers and sisters—
yes, even his own life—he cannot be My disciple.
Remember Lot’s wife.
Remember Lot’s wife!
And he said unto them,
Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or
wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake,
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God

There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.
Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a wife, but died childless.
And the second took her to wife, and he died childless.
Then the second
Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife.
So then, in the resurrection, whose wife will she be? For all seven were married to her.”
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother and her sister, as well as Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.
But a certain man named
Ananias, with Sapphira his
wife, sold a possession,
Now a man named
Ananias, together with his
wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.
And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
With his wife’s full knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds for himself, but brought a portion and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
About three hours later his wife also came in, unaware of what had happened.
And found a certain
Jew named
Aquila, born in
Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his
wife Priscilla; (because that
Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
There he found a
Jew named
Aquila, a native of
Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his
wife Priscilla because
Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them,
And after certain days, when
Felix came with his
wife Drusilla, which was a
Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
After several days,
Felix returned with his
wife Drusilla, who was a
Jewess. He sent for Paul and
listened to him speak about faith in Christ Jesus.
It is reported commonly that there is
fornication among you, and such
fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s
wife.
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is
intolerable even among pagans: A man has his father’s
wife.
Nevertheless, to avoid
fornication, let every man have his own
wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.
Let the husband render unto the
wife due
benevolence: and likewise also the
wife unto the husband.
The husband should
fulfill his
marital duty to his
wife, and likewise the
wife to her husband.
The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.
The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.
And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.
But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be
reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his
wife.
But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be
reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not
divorce his
wife.
But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving
wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not
divorce her.
For the unbelieving husband is
sanctified by the
wife, and the unbelieving
wife is
sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.
For the unbelieving husband is
sanctified through his believing
wife, and the unbelieving
wife is
sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife?
How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife.
Are you committed to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you free of commitment? Do not look for a wife.
But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.
But the married man is concerned about the affairs of this world, how he can please his wife,
There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.
A
wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry
anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.
Have we not power to lead about a sister, a
wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and
Cephas?
Have we no right to take along a believing
wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and
Cephas?
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
For the husband is the head of the
wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the
Savior.
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Nevertheless, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
A
deacon must be the husband of but one
wife, a good
manager of his children and of his own household.
Let not a widow be taken into the number under
threescore years old, having been the
wife of one man,
A widow should be
enrolled if she is at least sixty years old, the
wife of one man,
If any be
blameless, the husband of one
wife, having faithful children not accused of
riot or
unruly.
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the
gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered.
Let us be
glad and
rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his
wife hath made herself ready.
Let us
rejoice and be
glad and give Him the glory. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His
bride has made herself ready.
And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come
hither, I will
shew thee the
bride, the Lamb’s
wife.
Then one of the seven angels with the seven
bowls full of the seven final plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the
bride, the
wife of the Lamb.”
A man leaveth his own father that brought him up, and his own country, and cleaveth unto his wife.
He sticketh not to
spend his life with his
wife. and remembereth neither father, nor mother, nor country.
Wherefore a man loveth his wife better than father or mother.
So when he grew up, and came to the time that he should have a wife, I made a feast.
Then all my goods were
forcibly taken away, neither was there any thing left me, beside my
wife Anna and my son Tobias.
Now when I was come home again, and my
wife Anna was restored unto me, with my son Tobias, in the feast of
Pentecost, which is the holy feast of the seven weeks, there was a good
dinner prepared me, in the which I sat down to eat.
And my
wife Anna did take women’s works to do.
