For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
And when we passed by from our brethren the children of
Esau, which dwelt in
Seir, through the way of the plain from
Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the
wilderness of Moab.
So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of
Esau, who live in
Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes up from
Elath and Ezion-
geber, and traveled along the road of the
Wilderness of Moab.
And I sent messengers out of the
wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of
Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
So from the
Wilderness of Kedemoth I sent messengers with an offer of peace to Sihon king of
Heshbon, saying,
Namely,
Bezer in the
wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and
Ramoth in
Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in
Bashan, of the Manassites.
Bezer in the
wilderness on the plateau belonging to the Reubenites,
Ramoth in
Gilead belonging to the Gadites, or Golan in
Bashan belonging to the Manassites.
And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not
consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.
The LORD your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be enabled to
eliminate them all at once, or the
wild animals would multiply around you.
And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments.
Who led thee through that great and terrible
wilderness, wherein were
fiery serpents, and scorpions, and
drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
He led you through the vast and
terrifying wilderness with its
venomous snakes and scorpions, a
thirsty and waterless land. He brought you water from the rock of flint.
Who fed thee in the
wilderness with
manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
He fed you in the
wilderness with
manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to
prosper.
Remember, and
forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the
wilderness: from the day that thou
didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD.
Remember this, and never
forget how you
provoked the LORD your God in the
wilderness. From the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place, you have been rebelling against the LORD.
Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he
hated them, he hath brought them out to
slay them in the
wilderness.
Otherwise, those in the land from which You brought us out will say, ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land He had promised them, and because He
hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the
wilderness.’
And what he did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came into this place;
what He did for you in the wilderness until you reached this place;
Every place
whereon the soles of your feet shall
tread shall be yours: from the
wilderness and
Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the
uttermost sea shall your coast be.
Every place where the sole of your foot treads will be yours. Your territory will extend from the
wilderness to
Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the Western Sea.
And I have led you forty years in the
wilderness: your clothes are not
waxen old upon you, and thy
shoe is not
waxen old upon thy foot.
For forty years I led you in the
wilderness, yet your clothes and
sandals did not wear out.
He found him in a desert land, and in the waste
howling wilderness; he led him about, he
instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.
He found him in a desert land, in a barren,
howling wilderness; He surrounded him, He
instructed him, He guarded him as the apple of His eye.
They shall be burnt with hunger, and
devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.
They will be wasted from hunger and
ravaged by
pestilence and bitter plague; I will send the fangs of
wild beasts against them, with the
venom of vipers that
slither in the dust.
Because ye
trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the
wilderness of Zin; because ye
sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.
For at the waters of Meribah-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you broke faith with Me among the Israelites by failing to treat Me as holy in their presence.
His glory is like the
firstling of his
bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall
push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of
Manasseh.
His majesty is like a
firstborn bull, and his horns are like those of a
wild ox. With them he will
gore the nations, even to the ends of the earth. Such are the myriads of Ephraim, and such are the thousands of
Manasseh.”
From the
wilderness and this
Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the
Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.
Your territory shall extend from the
wilderness and
Lebanon to the great River Euphrates—all the land of the
Hittites—and west as far as the Great Sea.
And this is the cause why Joshua did
circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the
wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
Now this is why Joshua
circumcised them: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of war—had died on the journey in the
wilderness after they had left Egypt.
Now all the people that came out were
circumcised: but all the people that were born in the
wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not
circumcised.
Though all who had come out were
circumcised, none of those born in the
wilderness on the journey from Egypt had been
circumcised.
For the children of Israel walked forty years in the
wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD
sware that he would not
shew them the land, which the LORD
sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
For the Israelites had
wandered in the
wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD
vowed never to let them see the land He had
sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten back before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.
And when the men of
Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to
flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the
wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
When the men of
Ai turned and looked back, the smoke of the city was rising into the sky. They could not escape in any direction, and the troops who had fled to the
wilderness now became the pursuers.
And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of
slaying all the inhabitants of
Ai in the field, in the
wilderness wherein they
chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto
Ai, and
smote it with the edge of the sword.
When Israel had finished killing all the men of
Ai who had pursued them into the field and
wilderness, and when every last one of them had fallen by the sword, all the Israelites returned to
Ai and put it to the sword as well.
In the mountains, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the
wilderness, and in the south country; the
Hittites, the
Amorites, and the
Canaanites, the
Perizzites, the
Hivites, and the Jebusites:
the hill country, the foothills, the Arabah, the slopes, the
wilderness, and the Negev—the lands of the
Hittites,
Amorites,
Canaanites,
Perizzites,
Hivites, and Jebusites):
And now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses, while the children of Israel
wandered in the
wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day
fourscore and five years old.
Now behold, as the LORD promised, He has kept me alive these forty-five years since He spoke this word to Moses, while Israel
wandered in the
wilderness. So here I am
today, eighty-five years old,
This then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families; even to the border of
Edom the
wilderness of Zin southward was the
uttermost part of the south coast.
Now the
allotment for the clans of the tribe of Judah extended to the border of
Edom, to the
Wilderness of Zin at the extreme southern boundary:
In the wilderness, Beth-arabah, Middin, and Secacah,
These were in the wilderness:
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by
Jericho, unto the water of
Jericho on the east, to the
wilderness that goeth up from
Jericho throughout mount
Bethel,
The
allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended from the Jordan at
Jericho to the waters of
Jericho on the east, through the
wilderness that goes up from
Jericho into the hill country of
Bethel.
And their border on the north side was from Jordan; and the border went up to the side of
Jericho on the north side, and went up through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the
wilderness of Beth-
aven.
On the north side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of
Jericho, headed west through the hill country, and came out at the
wilderness of Beth-
aven.
And when they
cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the
wilderness a long season.
So your fathers
cried out to the LORD, and He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, over whom He brought the sea and
engulfed them. Your very eyes saw what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the
wilderness for a long time.
And the children of the Kenite, Moses’ father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the
wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of
Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Now the descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the
Wilderness of Judah in the Negev near
Arad. They went to live among the people.
And
Gideon said, Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into mine hand, then I will
tear your flesh with the thorns of the
wilderness and with briers.
“Very well,”
Gideon replied, “when the LORD has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will
tear your flesh with the thorns and briers of the
wilderness!”
And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.
Then he took the elders of the city, and using the thorns and briers of the wilderness, he disciplined the men of Succoth.
But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;
But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.
Then they went along through the
wilderness, and compassed the land of
Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of
Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for
Arnon was the border of Moab.
Then Israel traveled through the
wilderness and bypassed the lands of
Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the
Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the
Arnon was its border.
And they possessed all the coasts of the
Amorites, from
Arnon even unto
Jabbok, and from the
wilderness even unto Jordan.
seizing all the land from the
Arnon to the
Jabbok and from the
wilderness to the Jordan.
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.
And they turned and fled toward the
wilderness unto the rock of
Rimmon: and they
gleaned of them in the
highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and
slew two thousand men of them.
Then the Benjamites turned and fled toward the
wilderness to the rock of
Rimmon, and Israel cut down 5,000 men on the roads. And they overtook them at Gidom and struck down 2,000 more.
But six hundred men turned and fled to the
wilderness unto the rock
Rimmon, and abode in the rock
Rimmon four months.
But 600 men turned and fled into the
wilderness to the rock of
Rimmon, where they stayed four months.
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that
smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the
wilderness.
Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the
wilderness.
And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of
Zeboim toward the
wilderness.
another toward Beth-horon, and the third down the border road overlooking the Valley of
Zeboim facing the
wilderness.
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the
wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the
wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.
And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God delivered him not into his hand.
And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God would not deliver David into his hand.
And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.
While David was in Horesh in the Wilderness of Ziph, he saw that Saul had come out to take his life.
And they arose, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon.
So they set out and went to Ziph
ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the
Wilderness of Maon in the Arabah south of Jeshimon,
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
and Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard of this, he pursued David there.
And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
After Saul had returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.”
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to look for David and his men in the region of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and
lamented him, and buried him in his house at
Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the
wilderness of
Paran.
When Samuel died, all Israel gathered to
mourn for him; and they buried him at his home in
Ramah. Then David set out and went down to the
Wilderness of
Paran.
And David heard in the
wilderness that Nabal did
shear his sheep.
While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep.
But one of the young men told
Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the
wilderness to
salute our master; and he railed on them.
Meanwhile, one of Nabal’s young men informed Nabal’s wife
Abigail, “Look, David sent messengers from the
wilderness to
greet our master, but he
scolded them.
Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the
wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that
pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.
Now David had just finished saying, “In vain I have protected all that belonged to this man in the wilderness. Nothing that belongs to him has gone missing, yet he has paid me back evil for good.
Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
So Saul, accompanied by three thousand chosen men of Israel, went down to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there.
And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.
Saul camped beside the road at the hill of Hachilah opposite Jeshimon, but David was living in the wilderness. When he realized that Saul had followed him there,
Joab also and
Abishai pursued after
Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the
wilderness of
Gibeon.
But
Joab and
Abishai pursued
Abner. By
sunset, they had gone as far as the hill of Ammah opposite Giah on the way to the
wilderness of
Gibeon.
And all the country
wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the
brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the
wilderness.
Everyone in the
countryside was
weeping loudly as all the people passed by. And as the king crossed the Kidron Valley, all the people also passed toward the way of the
wilderness.
See, I will
tarry in the plain of the
wilderness, until there come word from you to
certify me.
See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The
asses be for the king’s household to
ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be
faint in the
wilderness may drink.
“Why do you have these?” asked the king. Ziba replied, “The
donkeys are for the king’s household to
ride, the bread and summer fruit are for the young men to eat, and the wine is to refresh those who become exhausted in the
wilderness.”
For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be
chafed in their minds, as a bear
robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not
lodge with the people.
He continued, “You know your father and his men. They are mighty men, and as fierce as a
wild bear
robbed of her cubs. Moreover, your father is a man of war who will not
spend the night with the troops.
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying,
Lodge not this night in the plains of the
wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be
swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.
Now send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not
spend the night at the fords of the
wilderness, but be sure to cross over. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be
swallowed up.’”
And honey, and butter, and sheep, and
cheese of
kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is
hungry, and
weary, and
thirsty, in the
wilderness.
honey, curds, sheep, and
cheese from the
herd for David and his people to eat. For they said, “The people have become
hungry, exhausted, and
thirsty in the
wilderness.”
So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and
slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the
wilderness.
So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, struck down
Joab, and killed him. He was buried at his own home in the
wilderness.
and Baalath, and
Tadmor in the
wilderness, in the land,
Baalath, and Tamar in the Wilderness of Judah,
But he himself went a day’s journey into the
wilderness, and came and sat down under a
juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the
wilderness. He sat down under a
broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the
wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest,
anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
Then the LORD said to him, “Go back by the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to
anoint Hazael as king over
Aram.
And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the
wilderness of
Edom.
Then he asked, “Which way shall we go up?” “By way of the Desert of
Edom,” replied
Joram.
And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a
wild vine, and gathered thereof
wild gourds his
lap full, and came and
shred them into the pot of
pottage: for they knew them not.
One of them went out to the field to gather herbs, and he found a
wild vine from which he gathered as many
wild gourds as his garment could hold. Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of
stew, though no one knew what they were.
And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to
Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The
thistle that was in
Lebanon sent to the
cedar that was in
Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a
wild beast that was in
Lebanon, and
trode down the
thistle.
And eastward he inhabited unto the entering in of the
wilderness from the river Euphrates: because their cattle were multiplied in the land of
Gilead.
They also settled in the east as far as the edge of the desert that extends to the Euphrates River, because their
livestock had increased in the land of
Gilead.
And on the other side Jordan by
Jericho, on the east side of Jordan, were given them out of the tribe of
Reuben,
Bezer in the
wilderness with her suburbs, and Jahzah with her suburbs,
From the tribe of
Reuben east of the Jordan opposite
Jericho they were given
Bezer in the
wilderness, Jahzah,
And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the
wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and
buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;
Some Gadites defected to David at his
stronghold in the desert. They were mighty men of
valor, trained for battle, experts with the shield and
spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions and who were as swift as gazelles on the mountains:
For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the
wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at
Gibeon.
For the tabernacle of the LORD that Moses had made in the
wilderness and the altar of burnt offering were presently at the high place in
Gibeon,
So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at
Gibeon; for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the
wilderness.
And Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at
Gibeon because it was the
location of God’s Tent of Meeting, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the
wilderness.
And he built
Tadmor in the
wilderness, and all the store cities, which he built in
Hamath.
He built
Tadmor in the
wilderness, in addition to all the store cities that he had built in
Hamath.
To
morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the
cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the
brook, before the
wilderness of Jeruel.
Tomorrow you are to march down against them. You will see them coming up the
Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the
Wilderness of Jeruel.
And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the
wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth,
Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye
prosper.
Early in the morning they got up and left for the
Wilderness of Tekoa. As they set out,
Jehoshaphat stood up and said, “Hear me, O people of Judah and Jerusalem. Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be
upheld; believe in His prophets, and you will succeed.”
And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.
When the men of Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked for the vast army, but there were only corpses lying on the ground; no one had escaped.
And they made a
proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the
wilderness.
And a
proclamation was issued in Judah and Jerusalem that they were to bring to the LORD the tax imposed by Moses the servant of God on Israel in the
wilderness.
And that they should
publish and
proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and
fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and
myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.
So they proclaimed this message and spread it throughout their towns and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hill country and bring back branches of olive,
wild olive,
myrtle, palm, and other
leafy trees, to make booths, as it is written.”
Yet thou in thy
manifold mercies forsookest them not in the
wilderness: the
pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the
pillar of fire by night, to
shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
You in Your great
compassion did not
forsake them in the
wilderness. By day the
pillar of cloud never turned away from guiding them on their path; and by the night the
pillar of fire
illuminated the way they should go.
Yea, forty years
didst thou
sustain them in the
wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; their clothes waxed not old, and their feet swelled not.
For forty years You sustained them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell.
And, behold, there came a great wind from the
wilderness, and
smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It
collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a
wild ass’s
colt.
But a witless man can no more become wise than the
colt of a
wild donkey can be born a man!
He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to
wander in a
wilderness where there is no way.
He deprives the earth’s leaders of reason and makes them
wander in a
trackless wasteland.
Behold, as
wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising
betimes for a prey: the
wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children.
Indeed, like
wild donkeys in the desert, the poor go to work
foraging for food; the wasteland is food for their children.
For want and famine they were solitary;
fleeing into the
wilderness in former time
desolate and waste.
Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.
The wild animals enter their lairs; they settle down in their dens.
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to bring rain on a barren land, on a desert where no man lives,
Knowest thou the time when the
wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do
calve?
“Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you watched the
doe bear her
fawn?
