discerning son keeps the law,
but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.

astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit:

but the
blameless will
inherit what is good.

conceit;
but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.

rejoice, there is great glory:
but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.

alway:
but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

but he that is
perverse in his ways shall fall at once.

plenty of food,
but whoever chases
fantasies will have his fill of poverty.

but he that maketh
haste to be rich shall not be innocent.

There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:
Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:
The conies are
but a feeble
folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;
the rock badgers are creatures of little power, yet they make their homes in the rocks;
Surely the
churning of milk bringeth forth
butter, and the
wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth
strife.
For as the
churning of milk yields
butter, and the twisting of the nose draws blood, so the
stirring of anger brings forth
strife.”

virtuously,
but thou excellest them all.

but you
surpass them all!”

deceitful, and beauty is vain:
but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.
Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains
forever.
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with
mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said to myself, “Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good!”
But it proved to be
futile.
The wise man’s eyes are in his head;
but the
fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
The wise man has eyes in his head,
but the
fool walks in darkness. Yet I also came to
realize that one fate overcomes them both.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy:
but to the
sinner he giveth
travail, to gather and to
heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy,
but to the
sinner He assigns the task of gathering and
accumulating that which he will hand over to one who pleases God. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
I know that there is no good in them,
but for a man to
rejoice, and to do good in his life.
I know that there is nothing better for them than to
rejoice and do good while they live,
I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
I said to myself, “As for the sons of men, God tests them so that they may see for themselves that they are but beasts.”
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were
oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power;
but they had no comforter.
Again I looked, and I considered all the oppression taking place under the sun. I saw the tears of the
oppressed, and they had no comforter; the power lay in the hands of their oppressors, and there was no comforter.
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
But better than both is he who has not yet existed, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow:
but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up;
but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone?
Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and
foolish king, who will no more be
admonished.
Better is a poor
but wise youth than an old
but foolish king who no longer knows how to take a
warning.
For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also
divers vanities:
but fear thou God.
For as many dreams bring
futility, so do many words. Therefore, fear God.

The sleep of the worker is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of the rich man permits him no sleep.
But those riches perish by evil
travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.
or wealth lost in a failed
venture, so when that man has a son there is nothing to pass on.
A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor, so that he lacks nothing his heart desires;
but God does not allow him to enjoy them. Instead, a stranger will enjoy them. This is
futile and a
grievous affliction.
Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?
That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he
contend with him that is mightier than he.
Whatever exists was named long ago, and what happens to a man is
foreknown;
but he cannot
contend with one stronger than he.
The heart of the wise is in the house of
mourning;
but the heart of fools is in the house of
mirth.
The heart of the wise is in the house of
mourning,
but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.
For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence:
but the
excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
For wisdom, like money, is a shelter, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of its owner.
In the day of prosperity be joyful,
but in the day of
adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
In the day of prosperity, be joyful,
but in the day of
adversity, consider this: God has made one of these along with the other, so that a man cannot discover anything that will come after him.
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
All this I tested by wisdom, saying, “I
resolve to be wise.”
But it was beyond me.
And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands:
whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her;
but the
sinner shall be taken by her.
And I find more bitter than death the woman who is a
snare, whose heart is a net, and whose hands are chains. The man who pleases God escapes her,
but the
sinner is ensnared.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
While my soul was still searching but not finding, among a thousand I have found one upright man, but among all these I have not found one such woman.
Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.
Only this have I found: I have discovered that God made men upright, but they have sought out many schemes.”
But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he
prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not
lengthen like a shadow.
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing. They have no further reward, because the memory of them is forgotten.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
I saw something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong; neither is the bread to the wise, nor the wealth to the intelligent, nor the favor to the skillful. For time and chance happen to all.
Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is
despised, and his words are not heard.
And I said, “Wisdom is better than strength,
but the wisdom of the poor man is
despised, and his words are not
heeded.”
Wisdom is better than weapons of war:
but one
sinner destroyeth much good.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one
sinner destroys much good.
A wise man’s heart is at his right hand;
but a
fool’s heart at his left.
A wise man’s heart inclines to the right,
but the heart of a
fool to the left.
Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.
Folly is appointed to great heights, but the rich sit in lowly positions.
If the iron be
blunt, and he do not
whet the edge, then must he put to more strength:
but wisdom is profitable to direct.
If the
axe is dull and the
blade unsharpened, more strength must be exerted,
but skill produces success.
A feast is made for
laughter, and wine maketh
merry:
but money answereth all things.
A feast is prepared for
laughter, and wine makes life
merry,
but money is the answer for everything.
But if a man live many years, and
rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.
So if a man lives many years, let him
rejoice in them all.
But let him remember the days of darkness, for they will be many. Everything to come is
futile.
Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart
cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes:
but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
Rejoice, O young man, while you are young, and let your heart be
glad in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and in the sight of your eyes,
but know that for all these things God will bring you to judgment.
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only was the Teacher wise,
but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
I am black,
but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of
Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
I am dark, yet lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of
Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon.
Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were
angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards;
but mine own
vineyard have I not kept.
Do not
stare because I am dark, for the sun has
gazed upon me. My mother’s sons were
angry with me; they made me a keeper of the vineyards,
but my own
vineyard I have neglected.
By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
On my bed at night I sought the one I love; I sought him, but did not find him.
I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
I will arise now and go about the city, through the streets and squares. I will seek the one I love. So I sought him but did not find him.
It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
I had just passed them when I found the one I love. I held him and would not let go until I had brought him to my mother’s house, to the chamber of the one who conceived me.
I sleep,
but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my
dove, my
undefiled: for my head is filled with
dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.
I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
I opened for my beloved,
but he had turned and gone. My heart
sank at his departure. I sought him,
but did not find him. I called,
but he did not answer.
My
dove, my
undefiled is
but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her;
yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
but my
dove, my perfect one, is unique, the
favorite of the mother who bore her. The maidens see her and call her blessed; the queens and concubines sing her praises.
My
vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
But my own
vineyard is mine to give; the thousand shekels are for you, O Solomon, and two hundred are for those who tend its fruit.
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have
nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD has spoken: “I have raised children and brought them up,
but they have rebelled against Me.
The ox knoweth his owner, and the
ass his master’s
crib:
but Israel
doth not know, my people
doth not consider.
The ox knows its owner, and the
donkey its master’s
manger,
but Israel does not know; My people do not understand.”
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it;
but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither
mollified with
ointment.
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head, there is no soundness— only wounds and welts and
festering sores neither
cleansed nor
bandaged nor
soothed with oil.
But if ye refuse and
rebel, ye shall be
devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
But if you resist and
rebel, you will be
devoured by the sword.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
How is the faithful city become an
harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness
lodged in it;
but now murderers.
See how the faithful city has become a
harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness resided within her,
but now only murderers!
And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that
forsake the LORD shall be consumed.
But rebels and sinners will together be
shattered, and those who
forsake the LORD will perish.
And he
fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
He
dug it up and cleared the stones and planted the finest vines. He built a
watchtower in the middle and
dug out a winepress as well. He waited for the
vineyard to yield good grapes,
but the fruit it produced was
sour!
And I will lay it waste: it shall not be
pruned, nor
digged;
but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
I will make it a wasteland, neither
pruned nor cultivated, and thorns and briers will grow up. I will command the clouds that rain shall not fall on it.”
For the
vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment,
but behold oppression; for righteousness,
but behold a cry.
For the
vineyard of the LORD of Hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the plant of His delight. He looked for justice,
but saw
bloodshed; for righteousness,
but heard a cry of distress.
Yea, ten acres of
vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of an homer shall yield an
ephah.
For ten acres of
vineyard will yield
but a bath of wine, and a homer of seed only an
ephah of grain.”
And the
harp, and the
viol, the
tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts:
but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.
At their feasts are the
lyre and
harp, tambourines and flutes and wine. They disregard the actions of the LORD and fail to see the work of His hands.
But the LORD of hosts shall be
exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be
sanctified in righteousness.
But the LORD of Hosts will be
exalted by His justice, and the holy God will show Himself holy in righteousness.
Therefore is the anger of the LORD
kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath
smitten them: and the hills did
tremble, and their carcases were
torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away,
but his hand is stretched out still.
Therefore the anger of the LORD burns against His people; His hand is raised against them to strike them down. The mountains
quake, and the corpses lay like refuse in the streets.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’
